8000 Plus Photos -- Should I upgrade?

I have iPhoto 6 with almost 9000 photos sorted simply by year using smartfolders. None of the pics have any special tags/names. Simply the camera sequential number. Maybe I'm lazy, but this has worked for me and it's great watching them randomly scroll/display on Apple TV.
I like the what the new iPhoto has but wonder if having my photos sorted like this will be compatible with the new events function or will the events not work since there are no other folders besides year smartfolders.
Thought would be appreciated. I don't want to purchase this only to find out the events doesn't really add anything to my library.

You shouldn't have a problem upgrading. All my smart folders are still usable and events have little to do with folders or albums you created. They are simply clusters of photos separated by weeks, days or 8 hours or 2 hours.
If you like browsing through all your photos, you'll like events. Just like I had to keep scrolling lists and pages on the iPhone, I can't get away from flipping through the events. I see photos that I otherwise would never have seen again. I have 20,000+ photos and now I wonder how I got along without the events.

Should I upgrade to Mavericks now from 10.6.8 (i-Mac, mid 2007, core 2 duo)? Will Mavericks be more secure than 10.6.8 ? I have the latest version of 10.6.8 and have upgraded my memory to 4GB. This could be one reason for me to make the move now.
10.6.8 has been great, it runs great with all my apps but am concerned about lack of support now. I know my PC apps will not work but maybe some apps that work now will "walk away" from 10.6.8 and then there's the security question of above.
I am also concerned about iPhoto 9 transition to i-Photo 11 and compatibility of my Time Machine WD Passport HD (format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled) based on several questions in applicable forums.

Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.

Hello,
My MacBook is running super slow. I downloaded Memory Clean from the App Store and I regularly have 15MB or free memory available.
In Activity Monitor I usually see the following:
~800 MB kernel_task
~500 MB softwareupdated
~500 MB Image Capture Extension
In Console, I see mdworker.bundle errors attributed to UID's: 501, 503, 1422
My current UID from what I can tell is 502. Other UID's left over from various upgrades are 89, 99, 235.
Lastly, Drive Genius is giving me a Drive Integrity Warning. But I can't create a bootable clone.
I have no idea if the above problems are related. I'd like to think I just run a lot of stuff that eats my memory and upgrading the RAM would be the easy path. What say you all?

I recently upgraded to Mavericks and now don't have access to iphoto. I cannot find my iphoto library to back the photos up before upgrading the iphoto but see the photos when I try to change screensaver? Where are my photos so I can back them up?
The iPhoto library should be in your user folder/Pictures unless it was moved.

Flash CSE VS Flash 8, should I upgrade?
I am using Flash 8 now and about intermediate user, should I
upgrade to CS3 since I have not mastered 8? Don't really know what
the advantages would be.Adobe's prices everywhere outside the USA are out of line.
I'm in Hong Kong, where there is no sales tax and no VAT. But I am
still irked by the fact that an upgrade to Flash CS3 costs a full
US$100 more in Hong Kong than in the USA. Don't tell me about
shipping costs. Surface shipping even a partial container from the
USA to Hong Kong costs LESS per unit than sending it in unionized
trucks from LA to New York.
So it costs me less to ask a friend in the USA to buy Flash
for me at full retail, PLUS tax, and to spend $35 sending it to me
by mail or FedEx, than to buy it locally.
Meanwhile, Adobe and other software companies scream and cry
and wonder why there is so much computer software piracy in my part
of the world. Every time software companies try to rip me off I am
SOOOO tempted to take the tram down to my local computer center and
spend US$2.60 for a bootleg, fully cracked copy of Flash. No, I
won't really do it. But if they'd just set the prices the same
worldwide, I wouldn't feel that angry temptation at all. -

If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.

The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

HP Photosmart B8550, Premium Plus Photo paper - Ink refuses to dry.
Hello, hopefully someone can suggest a work-around for my rather frustrating problem.
I create and sell prints of my vector artwork. I have no complaints about the printer's capability to produce vibrant, crisp images.
However, when I used to use the printer to print off art scans of watercolor paintings/ ink drawings/ etc, I never had the problem of the ink not drying rather fast.
My vector artwork is bold and usually flat areas of color. For example, the majority of the recent page I printed was a solid, bright, sky blue.
The print -looked- awesome, better than I had hoped.
It sat in the output tray for a day, day and a half. I picked it up to slide it into a protective sleeve.
Noticed my thumb actually -took ink off- the paper, leaving an orange-ish pink, deep, and crystal clear thumb print. I knew the print was totally ruined at that point, so I wanted to see if maybe it was something on my hands. Washed and dried them, went back to handle the print. The black inks wouldn't budge, only the colors, and they were almost "tacky" to the touch, even after a couple days.
To me, that's really weird, especially when using the Premium Plus paper, and these being dye based 564 ink cartridges. I would think there's be nothing "sticky" to leave behind when the paper absorbed the dye. It's almost like the inks went down a lot thicker than normal.
I have made no changes to "print quality" settings, as I never found a different between "best" and "normal" I keep them set to normal, and the ink coverage also at normal.
Prints looks great, but I need them to be long lasting and dry, certainly more handleable than 3 days and sticky/tacky.
Any ideas?
Thanks.I have the B8550 too, and I just assumed that since it's a fairly high-end printer, it would support the highest-end HP photo paper (i.e., Premium Plus). However, the manual states:
HP Premium and HP Premium Plus photo papers are not supported with this product.
Now, I don't know if that means you shouldn't use it, or that the advanced features won't work, or ??? Or if you should use it, what settings to use (since that type of paper is not listed in the options on the drop-down menu.) I have used the Premium Plus Soft Gloss without any problems. But HP seems to think that the highest quality paper you can use with this printer is "Advanced," which is their third-grade paper. Not exactly what I'd expect from this type of printer. -
I'm thinking about getting a 21.5" iMac which comes with 8GB of RAM. Unfortunately, the RAM is not user-upgradeable. Do you think 8GB is enough memory, or should I upgrade to 16GB? Besides internet surfing and email, I like to play flash games and listen to internet radio. Occasionally, I might want to stream a movie. I would greatly appreciate any advice you could give me.
For what you list, 8GB should be adequate. I ran with 4GB without any issue for over a year in my iMac i7 before I added RAM, primarily for running Win 7 via Bootcamp.
The tasks that need a lot of RAM are typically video editing/production, heavy-duty photo manipulation (not iPhoto or PS Elements), and professional page layout like Adobe Creative Suite. If you think that, down the road, you may want to delve into those fileds with this computer, by all means get the extra RAM.

I upgraded to OS X Yosemite and now need to upgrade iPhoto. I have an Airport Time Capsule sitting on my desk that I have not yet employed to backup all my (thousands of) photos. I know, I am a fool. That aside, will I lose my photos in the upgrade? I am desperate to backup my photos and now wonder if I should revert back to my previous operating system. Help!
iPhoto Library is essentially a large datafile in which your photos are stored. iPhoto is an application you use to do things with the photos stored in the datafile. If you backup iPhoto Library then you have backed up all the photos stored in the library. It's iPhoto that links you to all those photos stored in iPhoto Library. All you need do is to copy iPhoto Library to a backup drive. If you are doing regular backups, then you are already making a copy of the iPhoto Library on the backup drive.

Photos taken with the iphone should be imported to your computer regularly as with any digital camera, most especially before any update or restore. If you failed to do this, then they are likely gone. You can try restoring from backup.
Photos synced from your computer should still be on your computer an in you regular backup copy of your computer. -
New & Improved 4x6 Premium Plus photo paper does not print as good as older paper
I am using an HP Photosmart 8250 printer. I print about 500 to 700 photos per year on the 4x6 Premium Plus photo paper. When my new order of paper came yesterday I noticed it said new & Improved on the box. Buy I do not get the same quality of print on the new paper as I did on the old. The blacks have a dark olive look to it and the colors are not as rich as I got with the old paper. To make sure my printer was OK I choice a good picture and printed it on both the older paper and the new. The blacks are black and the colors are rich on the old paper. The black on the new paper had that olive look and colors were not as nice. I basically threw all my new prints in the trash. What has happen to this good paper? I don't want to have to buy a different printer at the moment, but cannot print my photos on this new paper either. Help?

Certain inks work better with certain types of paper. There is nothing wrong with your supplies but unfortunately the paper you are using will always exhibit this problem when used in conjuction with these supplies.
The Premium Plus Photo Paper works better with much older printing systems than the one you own. HP Advanced Paper is the recommended paper for your photosmart and should not exhibit any smudging problems like the oen you have described.
This website can be useful if you want to find out information on what paper to use for best results with any given printer or any other info about the paper itself.

You need to provide more details about what happened. But, here is something you can check.
When you run Photo and it converts your library, it doesn't delete the iPhoto library. Look in your Pictures folder - you should see two libraries:
iPhoto Library.migratedphotolibrary (this is the original iPhoto library)
Photos Library.photoslibrary (this is the new Photos library)
You should still be able to open the original iPhoto library. The iPhoto application was not deleted from your computer. (It was probably removed from your Dock if you had an icon there.) Look in the Applications folder, find iPhoto, and run it. It should show your original library with all your original images.
It is always a good idea to back up your photos (and the iPhoto library) before trying these migrations. Problems do occur...

Is OS X 10.9.5 as you state correct for your OS? What version of iphoto did you have? What version did you upgrade to? What does "gone mean"? A new, empty library like n original install? Blanks were photos should be? what exactly are you seeing? Provide any exact error messages too

can't open my photo library after upgrading to iphoto 11. Is it possible to download iphoto 9.0.1 after installing '11. Have followed all the other instructions and am in a loop which doesn't allow me to access iphoto or my photos.
when iphoto wouldnt open we read the trouble shooting info and it said that we may have needed to download 9.0.1 if we had an older version. We obviously didn't download it before the upgrade and wondered if it would cause problems or indeed solve the problem if we downloaded it now!
When we try to open iphoto is says:

To prepare the library use the iphoto library upgrader available from Apple.
We have downloaded this twice now and it still sends us this message when we try to open iphoto. -
Should I upgrade my 2008 iMac from 10.6 to 10.7 or 10.8?
I'm wondering (a) should I upgrade at all and what to and (b) if I do can I go back to 10.6 somehow?
(a) I would like to have increased connectivity between my iMac and iOS devices via iCloud, and I like the new Mail app in Lion/ML. Anyone got experience with older iMacs running Lion or ML? How well do they cope? Any advantages or disadvantages of note?
If a lot of people find that performance is really bad on similar iMacs the following is not relevant. (I have increased RAM to 4GB (max) and have a 320 GB HDD)
I was thinking of some ways to upgrade that might allow me to just see how the iMac handles a new OS and still allow me to go back to SL if it slows down too much.
1. Install Lion on a partition. If it works well install Lion onto whole system, if not delete partition.
2. Install Lion on whole system and if slow go back to 10.6 via a Time Machine backup (doubt that would work).
3. Install Lion on whole system and if slow go back to 10.6 via a backup in other software (CCC for example – which I don't have yet – might work?).First check that your Mac meets the System requirements for Lion...
