800FSB Processor Question & SATA drives question.

1. Which is better the Heatsink Fan that comes with a Pentium 4 3.0Ghz 800FSB processor, or a Vantec Aeroflow TMD Heatsink Fan?
2. Is it better to stripe my two new 120 Gig SATA drives? Or is it better to just have them independent of each other? Why?

1. I didn't realize that the processor came with a HSF, so I bought a Vantec Aeroflow. Now I'm just trying to figure out if there is much of a difference between them. I either keep the Vantec and use it because it benefits me more, or I return it and get my money back because it doesn't benefit me any. Any suggestions?
2. It seems that striping (RAID 0) may be too risky in terms of possible data loss. I think I will just use each drive independently and reduce that risk.

  • Macbook Pro x SATA Drive question

If I were to purchase this exact drive from the link below:

Would it fit inside my MacBook Pro and would it be fully compatible with it as well (obviously)??
    My MacBook Pro spechs are:
    15-inch Early 2011 MacBook Pro
Processor:  2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory:  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics:  AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB
Software:  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53) [But will be upgrading to Mountain Lion when released]
    Please Help.

That's a 3.5" disk - your MacBook Pro can only use 2.5" HDs. Assuming you'd be installing it into your HD bay.
It also doesn't come in an enclosure - not a good thing.

  • Adding first SATA drive - Questions

I'm going to be adding a SATA drive later today (Newegg and FedEx willing) and was just curious about a couple of things.
What I want to do is remove my old drive and add the SATA, install windows, and then install the old drive and transfer my files.
What (if any) setting do I have change in the bios on my K8N Platinum to get the SATA to work? When I add my old drive, what will be the default boot drive? How do I make it the SATA?
I'm up for any other thoughts you might have too.

    You don't need to touch

all you will need to change is the BOOT sequence (order).. you'll change it from:floppy - cdrom - hard drive 0 to floppy - cdrom - sata hd
There is no sata HD option here only HD.
If You want your OS on Sata as the C:\  drive , disconnect the ide temporarily as DrCool., advised.
    When XP is installed:-
    Switch of
    Re-attach IDE
    Boot Up
    Enter Bios
Advanced options - Hard Disk Boot Order
You should see both your HDrives listed . Move the Sata so that it' on top (1st to Boot)
    Job's Done
Board isn't quircky, it just lists IDE drives then Sata drives. Exactly the same procedure would be needed if for some reason you had HDrives on IDE 1 & Ide2 and wanted the HD on IDE2 to be the C:\ drive

  • Swappable SATA Drive Question

I am searching for a way to have multiple (and fast) dedicated back ups (to be used sort of like removable media of old). I understand the concept of redundancy and while a RAID system gives me great capacity, and expandability, the result is still at a single location. I desire to be able to have a copy of critical documents off site (SDB), so am looking for a single bay SATA swappable that will allow me to 'swap' the drive(s) in the safe deposit box with the one(s) at home once weekly. I am considering the Wiebetech RTX-100H-Q. Does anyone have any experience with this concept, this drive or others that may serve this purpose? Are there any other considerations of which I need to be aware?
    Thanks in advance!

That's a good idea. I do something similar, but using older, external complete drives - and I am not super regular.
A cheaper type of unit might be a Newertech:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/FWU2ESHDK/
No fan, but takes 2.5 and 3.5 inch drives.
Wiebetech has a good reputation; I haven't heard anything about this Newertech.

  • Question installing SATA drive on Delta 2 Platinum mobo

I just got a brand spankin' new Raptor 74gb SATA drive I will be installing on my brand new MSI K7N2 Delta 2 Platinum mobo, and I have a few questions.
First off, I don't have any desire to run a RAID configuration but I want the SATA drive to be my boot drive.  So my question is, do I still have to enable RAID in the bios? Or is just Enabling SATA enough?
Second, when I go to install WinXP, do I have to hit F6 and install any drivers?
The mobo did come with a floppy that reads
    G72-NVSA020
Nforce3 SATA Raid Driver (For WinXP only)
If I do need drivers, does that floppy have the drivers I will need when installing windows? Or is there a place to download the latest ones I will need?
I am slipstreaming XP SP2 into my XP installation.
Also, I've read that I'm not supposed to have any PATA drives hooked up when installing windows which makes sense.
oh yeah...one more thing...i'm going to be using an AMD xp 3200+ 400mhz bus processor and all I have is three sticks of Crucial PC2100 DDR memory that I wanted to use since I already own it.  Is this a bad idea?
    thanks a bunch

Thanks for the quick response...I'll be building my system this weekend...I'm waiting for my PC Power & Cooling Silencer 470 ATX power supply that will arrive tomorrow.  This bad boy should give plenty of juice (26a on 12v) to power my rig.  It's good to know the pc2100 can be used to get the system up and running, but I'll be investing in some pc3200 shortly. I thought of a few more questions if you'd be kind enough to reply:
    1) When I buy the PC3200, I plan on getting 2 sticks of 512 and running dual channel.  I see you run Crucial ram.  Are there any issues with Crucial ram running dual channel that you know of?
    2) I have a SB live soundcard but plan on getting an Audigy 2 zs soon, should i just use the onboard sound for now?  Is the onboard sound as good as an SB live?
    3) Do you recommend using the MSI "LiveUpdate" feature to update bios and drivers, or should I just go with the Nvidia UDP v5.10 and update bios manually? Or maybe I don't even want to update the bios?
    Thanks again

  • Question about using a SATA drive through an Epress34 card???

I have a basic question about OSX and how it treats a SATA drive hung from an Express34 SATA card. So OSX just treats any drive as a mounted drive as far as I know bbut what about when booting...
If, at boot up, I use the 'cmd C' option to select an external SATA dirve hanging off of an Express34 SATA card, will OSX see that drive as if it just were the internal drive in the MBP or is there some inherant difference between the real internal drive and any other SATA drive?
I guess the question is... does the cmd C option really just tell the OS to treat this drive as though it were the interal drive and boot from it (assuming the drive is bootable of course) or is ot doing something else.
If that is the case, why can't I use an external drive and install BootCamp on it, assumiong that I booted from this drive?
Is there a difference between an external SATA drive from an Express34 card and an external firewire drive?
    TIA,

Shutdown and installed 2nd identical drive in SATA 2, 3 and 5.  Niether the BIOS, nor Windows sees the 2nd drive. My question is, do I have to install the RAID drivers in order to see the 2nd drive? If so which drivers would I install? TIA

  • Sata & IDE Hard drive question

OK im running an Neo4 Platinum SLI MB and i have 2 Western Digital Raptors hooked up in raid 0 array and everything works fine, Now when i try to hook up my old IDE Maxtor Dimondmax 250gb Hard drive it wont be detected in windows.  Do the jumpers need to be changed on all the drives? Am i missing a setting in the bios I tried changing the maxtors jumpers to slave or master and either way made no differance.
In the bios/Nvidia raid config area i had the IDE secondary master and IDE secondary slave options disabled, If i enabled them the detecting array at start up shows my raid hard drives as well as my DVD-rom and burner.
    mesa confused

When i installed the 2 sata drives i unpluged my Maxtor so it was never detected..
    The Bios Boot order:
    1st boot priority: DISABLED
    2nd boot priority: DISABLED
    3rd boot priority: HARD DRIVE

  • MSI Neo-FIS2R build questions! & SATA RAID questions!

This is going to sound like a stupid question. And I'm not even sure that I know what I am asking.
I've built two computers so far. One with an MSI K7N2G-L and another with an MSI K7N2G-ILSR. Both nForce2 motherboards with AMD processors.
Here's what I'm getting at... I'm planning on building a new machine with either the Abit IC7-G or the MSI Neo-FIS2R (both 875P boards obviously).
Now, when I built the two nForce2 boards it was really easy. I put all of the components together, turned on the machine, the bios auto enabled settings, I put the windows xp pro cd in the cd drive and formatted the hard drive for NTFS, I then installed the OS and booted the system! Then I intstalled the drivers fromt the MSI CD. Ran Live BIOS and flashed to the most current motherboard BIOS. SIMPLE! Everything worked fine.
Here's my question. For the 875P system will everything pretty much happen the same way? Or do I need to do additional things? One of my main concerns (especially if I go with the Abit IC7-G over the MSI) is flashing the bios. Do I need a floppy drive or something? I've never flashed a BIOS outside of the Live BIOS utility. I don't want to put a floppy drive in my system! What are my options here?
Not that I want to do it, but if I needed to (say with the Abit board) HOW DO I FLASH THE BIOS WITHOUT USING THE LIVE BIOS UTILTY?
Bottom line is, I'm building this system for someone else and I want it all to be a painless experience (especially if they are looking over my shoulder).
One final question. This may sound even more stupid than the first question. I'm purchasing SATA drives ONLY. I'm not purchasing any IDE drives. So, here's my question...Can I boot from a SATA drive? What if it's in RAID 0? From the posts in the forums it appears that the SATA and RAID on these 875P motherboards either doesn't work or isn't very reliable (may potentially lose data). IS THIS AT ALL TRUE?! I'm stupid when it comes to RAID and SATA. Any help in this department would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    3. If I install two SATA drives and set up a RAID
(either 0 or 1) which drive does the OS go on?
I have never built a raid array (as yet) and have never owned a SATA disk (as yet), but from what I have read...
RAID is a method of connecting several disks together so they perform as a single disk.  That means, in response to your points above:
    1) If you install only one drive (SATA or not), it will not be set up as RAID.
    2) If you install two SATA drives, you have the option of using them as two individual drives OR setting them up in a RAID 0 or 1 configuration.
    3) Ok, RAID 0 is known as "striping" - this method makes two disks look like one big disk, that works twice as fast as the individual drives.  Every time the PC writes data to the drive, it sends the first bit of data to drive 1, the second to drive 2, then drive 1 again etc etc.  This speeds up the disk read/write time, as the two disks can both work simultaneously.  To the OS though, the two drives appear as one.  The OS will be spread across both disks - it needs both of them connected to run, take either disk out and you'll be left with half an OS (that obviously won't work)
With RAID 1 (known as "mirroring"), you still use two disks.  You will only have a useable capacity of the smallest disk however (using two 40gb drives only gives you a total of 40gb of space. with RAID 0, two 40gb disks will make one big one - nearly 80gb large {I think the RAID system itself uses a bit of space}).  The advantage with mirroring, is the second disk holds an exact copy of the first.  If one disk goes bang, you have a duplicate copy on the second - so, to answer your point above, the OS will reside on both disks.
To summarize, RAID 0 is good for increasing speed; RAID 1 is good for increasing protection of your data as you have two copies incase a drive gives up.  To get the best of both worlds you need RAID 0+1 (this method needs 4 disks though, 2 striped - then 2 mirroring the striped).
There is a lot to RAID - just search the net for some manuals if you're interested, hope this gives you an idea though (providing I've got it right!)

  • Internal vs External hard drive question???

I have a very basic question about OSX and its treatment of drives...
If I have an external drive (either firewire or SATA using an Express34 card) and I select it, at boot time, as the boot drive, does OSX really treat this drive as if it were the internal drive or is there some underlying difference?
Is there a difference between an external firewire and an external SATA drive (other than the I/O speed)?
What I'm getting at is this. I want the ability, using the 'opt+cmd' (or whatever the key seq is) option, at boot time, to select either the internal drive or an external drive to be "THE" drive, as far as OSX is concerned.
Asuming that both drives have at least a bootable OSX partition, I'd like for the external drive to have OSX AND maybe another partition for maybe Windows or Linux.
At boot time if I select the external drive as the boot drive will it act like the internal drive and allow me to install a BootCamp partition? Can I manuly repartition it (while its a secondary drive usng iPartition perhaps)? Can I install a boot loader that will allow me to select an OS after initially selecting the external drive with the 'opt+cmd' option?
I'm looking for the ability to basicaly select different drives as the "internal" drive, much like you would using the jumper and/or cable selects in a Mac Pro or even a PC based system.
Is this even possible? id it is, is it possible with firewire or express34 card driven SATA drives?
Sorry if this is confusing, I'm having a hard time articulating exactly what i want to do...
    Thanks in dvance,
    Peter

Yes. One cool thing to do is create a bootable backup on an external drive, and use it for OS/upgrade testing - think Leopard. To me this is one huge advantage over Windows systems. You can back up the hard drive and prove it works. Also allows for faster recovery of not only data, but installed applications and settings. I always create a fresh backup to my external FW drive before going on trips.

  • Unanswered Replacement Hard Drive Questions

    Hello everyone,
Recently I've been researching upgrading my internal hard drive in anticipation for Leopard and new features. Almost all posts on this topic have pointed towards using SuperDuper and an external firewire drive to make a clone. That's awesome and all but here's a few extra questions:
1)What's the maximum size (GB) SATA drive my iMac will recognize? Is their a limit?
2)Will this void my 3-Year Apple Care Plan if I do it myself?
3)Does SuperDuper provide instructions on how to boot and install the clone? If not how is this done?
Thanks in advance for the insight.
    iMac G5 (pre-iSight)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   iMac G5 2.0, 2 gb RAM, 250gb HDD

    Welcome to Discussions -
    1. There is no limit to the size of SATA drive you can put in your iMac
    2. Replacing the drive will not void your warranty unless you have an iSight, which you don't.
3.. SD provides clear and detailed instructions, they are easy to understand and it's a great program
Hope this answers all your questions,

  • SATA HDD question

    Hi ppl
    Quick question.
When I built my PC  I used a HDD with a normal P-ATA connection with the IDE cable.
I am building a PC for my friend and was wondering if I should get a SATA drive.
R they rly that much faster or is it just a gimick?
Also when u install one for the first time and boot up is the SATA drive automatically recognised like a  normal P-ATA drive.
Sorry new to this. Thanks for your help
    SAspaz

    Hey again
Umm alright I dont rly mind if I get either of the drive now. Just a quick question. When I built my rig I just attached the P-ATA HDD using a normal IDE cable and then when I booted I just installed windows xp via CD etc and it just detected my IDE HDD was there.
Now if I built the new PC with a SATA drive and I connect the SATA port and the power to the drive and boot up the PC. Will it automatically recognise the HDD and I can install windows normally or wot. Is there anything I would have to do differently for SATA compared the PATA
Cheers guys. Noob wen it comes to the SATA drives.

  • Going from PC to Mac, drive questions?

Ok, this is for all the Mac guys out here. I just converted from PC to a iMac. I have the 3tb Fusion - but in my PC I have 6TB in (2) 3tb SATA 7200 drives.  The first drive hold 14 years of photography, while the second hold 8 years of video. These are active drive, I use the data on both in quite a bit of different projects. These are not archives or backups, they are usable libraries. So my question: these drives are formatted NTFS - I'm not sure how to get them to work with the Mac. While I can read them, I can't write to them. Also, I don't know the mechanics or efficiencies of running NTFS drives in a Mac environment? Looking for some real world advice.

Software is a valid solution in the short term that allows you to use your drives easily.
However, I'd strongly urge you to consider replacing the drive system with a more Mac-ish box and then copy your multiple TB to the new disks. You will get a backup and new. easily accessible mass storage.
Hope you enjoy your new Macintosh. It's the only machine I've ever used so I don't know how to compare Premiere on a PC to my use of Adobe and Apple products on my Macs.

  • Hard Drive Question pls help

Okay my situation I am getting a MacBook for my graduation gift and im doing my research and I am customizing my MacBook through
    http://www.colorwarepc.com/
and they offer a 160Gb Serial ATA hard drive rpm of 7200
but on the online store apple only offers hard drives at the 5400 rpm
now obviously rpm of 7200 is better and I don't mind forking the extra cash out for it either
    now my questions
Why doesn't Apple offer hard drives at the 7200 rpm rate?
If I purchase a MacBook through Colorwarepc will the original Mac warrenty still excist?
And will the hard drive be a Apple made product, now I checked to see the make of the Hard drive on the Apple website and colorware website both are said to be Serial ATA... now I don't know if that is the maker or just some jargon
    please help me
    Thank you
    Looking

There is no 7200 RPM 160 GB notebook hard drive. The fastest at that size is 5400 RPM. I think the drive you must be looking at is a full size drive for desktops. Notebook hard drives are mostly 5400 RPM although there are less expensive models that run at 4200 RPM. Only Seagate and Hitachi make a 7200 RPM notebook drive in a 100 GB capacity. The new 160 and 200 GB notebook drives are 5400 RPM. They are also pretty expensive.
Apple does not make hard drives. The hard drives in Apple computers come from different manufacturers. Seagate, Toshiba, Hitachi, and Fujitsu are the main suppliers.
Serial ATA is a type of interface not a drive maker. Intel Macs all use SATA drives.
As far as warranty is concerned the warranty is good as long as the retailer is an authorized Apple retailer and the computers they are selling are not gray market. Personally I know nothing about the company.
If you are a college student (currently enrolled) or your parents are elementary, secondary, or university faculty or staff you can purchase Apple products directly from Apple at an academic discount.

Is it possible to replace the hard drive of a T60 laptop with the hard drive of a T40 laptop?  My T60 hard drive crashed and I am considering this option.  Assuming I can, will my T60 recognize and booth with the T40 hard drive?

    mrbhagav, welcome to the forum,
sorry, but it is not possible. The T40 has a PATA (EIDE) drive and your T60 an SATA drive, totally different.
You'll need to get a new drive; through warranty if it's still valid or purchase one and start afresh using the recovery discs you hopefully made.
