800MB RAM Usage with nothing running?

I am pretty confused, my MacBook seems to be using a lot of memory with nothing significant running. I've cleaned all caches, and ran all the maintenance scripts, but from shutdown to restart, with nothing running (not even dashboard), it shows over 800MB of RAM in use. 250MB of that is wired, 750MB is active. I've checked my login items, and there's nothing that would cause such a large usage of RAM running. Even when I start the Activity Monitor, it doesn't even list anything using so much RAM. There's like 20-40MB RAM for the kernel task, window server and default stuff like that.
Basically there seems to be a large amount of RAM used that I have no idea what is using it. Any clue at all what could be causing this?

So you have 800 MBs of RAM in use. Why is that a problem? See the following:
About OS X Memory Management and Usage

Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.

    Hi Suzy Q,
I can send and receive calls.
I get "messaging stopped" when doing a lot of texts.
Texts come up "ghosted" meaning they have the text on the bottom and a transparent one overlaid  on top. they then become one. But I get the ghosting most of the time when I go into a message from a contact to send a text.
When I go to call logs or text logs, the numbers come up first, and then then the names pop up randomly, meaning not in order down the page, until they are all shown. lots of lag time.
    It runs slow.
I have 5 apps on here. I should be able to have a  lot of apps on here, and play music, and have files, and...and....and.
I can get online but doing a Google search, when the page with the choices comes up, it is blurred and I have to tap on the screen for it to become clear and readable.
When online and scrolling, it hitches sometimes/lags/gets stuck then unstuck
I get VZWAVS has stopped. (not sure if those are the right letters)
The status bar that is supposed to be gray with the new update, goes back and forth between green--the old os--to gray. And I have found no continuity with when I get green or when I get gray.

Even w/o Windows running and VMWare completely shut down, something is still gobbling up resources.  See Image.  My green resource aren't even at half of the memory.  I used to run Win XP Pro SP2 (the only decent windows OS), and my green resources barely got beyond half even with a trading program, QB for Mac and safari running on the Mac side.  Now, even if I completely shut down the windows side, including VMWare, I still don't have the same resources.  What gives?  I suspect Windows 7 is getting bigger and bigger (just like the other Win OS' do every time you need to update).  Perhaps a migrated virus?  Both the Apple store and the Microsoft store had no good answers, other than the insipid suggestion of re-installing the OS.  Any big brains in here have any ideas?  I should note that the Microsoft store gave me Windows 7 pro for free since they screwed up the update on XP (despite me telling them NOT to load service pack 3).  I was skeptical of Win 7, and frankly my computer has not performed as well since.  I only use Windows because some of my trading programs only run on Windows, and Quickbooks for Mac still *****.  My QB 2004 runs better and is easier to use even now, and I am one of the first 1000 (possibly 100 people to buy QB nearly 25 years ago).  Oh, and safari is constantly crashing.  I would rather just use the Mac 100% of the time, but unfortunately, being in finance and accounting, that is not an option until Intuit and the like stop s*cking Microsoft's you know what, and make better programs for Mac.  Mac hardware is way superior and prettier, and the OS much smoother imo, so please help.  Thank you.
    Grumpy Middle-aged Mac User

There is nothing necessarily wrong with your Mac's use of system resources. Inactive "blue" memory may just as well be considered "green" in that is is available to any process that requires it. It is merely given that status in the event a process that previously used that memory requires it again. In that event, it's available right away. Otherwise, whatever it's used for would have to be created again, wasting time and degrading your Mac's performance.
For a completely correct perspective regarding the memory pie chart, think of "inactive" as essentially "free", and "free" as a resource you paid for that is going completely unused and wasted.
You will then conclude you really aren't using that much RAM. You aren't even using half of it. What you are observing is most likely the consequence of websites becoming ever more resource-hungry. That so-called progress will never be reversed, and remember that websites are created by programmers with $5000 workstations with 64 GB RAM and practically unlimited bandwidth. Their job is to please their bosses who have $10000 workstations and are easily impressed by flashy animations and other nonsense that others consider wasteful and distracting.
Oh, and safari is constantly crashing.
That is the only thing that should concern you. Safari shouldn't do that, so when it does next time post the crash report. Don't post anything below "Binary Images" - it's not useful.

  • Solution to High CPU Utilisation With *Nothing* Running After CS4 Install on Mac OS 10.6.1.

I'm posting this in case someone else has the same problem. (If anyone else even notices the problem.)
Another possible title [to help with people searching for the solution] "Computer runs slow after installing CS4 on Mac OS 10.6.1 Snow Leopard"
I just purchased CS4 Design Premium and have been trying to install it on a fresh install of Snow Leopard (10.6.1) and whilst everything appears to be fine, my CPU sits at 60% with *every* application closed. The instant I uninstall CS4 the CPU drops back to 1-2%. I've conducted this test twice already---that is installed CS4 on a fresh Snow Leopard twice over.
To be clear this isn't resolved by restarting, as is the solution to one known bug mentioned in the CS4 read-me.
I did eventually solve the problem. The tech support guy at Adobe was useless, even though I told him that I had re-installed twice and once re-installed Snow Leopard, he had me run the Adobe cleaning utility thingy. Three hours of re-installing (for the third time) and another 700MB of updates (from my precious download quota) and I was exactly back to where I started.
Then when the updates for Version Cue and Adobe Drive failed to install, it got me thinking. Looking at the box it states that Java is needed for Version Cue Server. That being a unique requirement and the update for that particular program failing, sent me on the search. I eventually found the directory containing Version Cue Server and moved it. I next planned to restart but I didn't have to, the instant I moved the directory my CPU usage plummeted from 60% to 1%.
I've been working on this for days and all I had to do was issue the command.
    mv /Library/Application\ Support/Adobe/Adobe\ Version\ Cue\ CS4/Server ~/Disabled
    *sigh*
    David.

Thank you for posting this, I just spent the last 72 hours trying to figure out why my macbook was suddenly burning up my lap (and my battery) without any visible processes in Activity Monitor. This is a pretty major bug (and not the first major one by Adobe on mac) but I am just glad that I didn't need to do a full reinstall. Getting rid of Version Cue takes care of the problem straight out. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, hopefully others will find this before trying to track down other sources.

  • Memory full with nothing running, very slow

Our macbook suddenly started running very slow and having programs freeze a lot after a partial migration form a power PC G5.  In short it happens in two different accounts.  Activity monitor shows the cpu is not doing much (idle > 70%) but the memory is very full even when only activity monitor has launched.
Is it right for activity monitor to be showing almost all of the 1 GB used (0.78GB) immediately after a restart with only activity monitor running (see image).  I don't know what most of these things are.  CPU usages was very low.  launch program takes a long time, switching between programs, pretty much anything between programs, saving, or launching.  Also programs (at least firefox and power point which I use alot) freeze frquently.  (What I have tried is listed below).  Yes I have ordered more memory but that doesn't address the issue that this was working fine before.  Once  much is launched the memory use is essentially 100%
The cause:  macbook had been working fine with several user accouts and normal operation.  We had used it since "mid 2007".  Our old G5 is dying (video card I believe).  So I did a partial migration using the firewire migrate in the OS.  I migrated my account and then separately migrated some of the applicaitons.  I also started using Outlook and set up all my email accounts in it.  What should the activity look like?

Tried:  repair disk - no problems  The HD was replaced 12/12/2008,  repaired disk permisions
reinstall snow_leapard from original disk 10.6.3 - same symptoms,  updated through software update to 10.6.8  - no change.
not much on login launch.  other account has less and also slow.

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation.  TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible;  Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided.  Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.  Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Lion Cache Cleaner, CockTail, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Backuplist
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    iBackup
    JaBack
    Silver Keeper
    MimMac
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.

  • High kernel_task RAM Usage in Yosemite 10.10.1

    Hello All,
No matter what I'm running, I always have high RAM usage with kernel_task. I've looked around the other threads and never found a definitive solution. I wouldn't call it crippling to my system but I would like to resolve the issue. Below is a screenshot of my activity monitor, and my Etrecheck run. • Questions about mpd and sonata ram usage

    Hi again!
I'm very impressed with mpd and i really love the sonata client with it's cover art , lyrics fetching features .
I've noticed that mpd uses about 13 mb ram and sonata 16 mb of ram. I have about 6 albums in my library .
I was just wondering if it is normal for mpd and sonata to use that ram .
I have enough ram about 1gb so it's not an issue , i'm just curious if this is normal
Also i've noticed that with mpd and sonata the cpu usage is much lower than with audacious when playing files , but the ram usage with mpd is higher
    Thanks again

Hmmm...I have Arch64 with a 15,000 collection, MPD uses 9.8MB and Sonata uses 52.5.MB, whether there are songs in the playlist or not.

  • Z10 - High CPU and Battery Usage with BBM

I recently updated my Z10 (UK and EE Carrier) to 10.2.1.3062 and every day or so I am getting very high CPU and Battery Usage with BBM running in the background.
I have never used BBM and have no active or past conversations or contacts.
This morning, it used around 60% battery in under 3 hours, with 95% of that time sat at 'idle' in my pocket.
Sometimes its after I have connected it to my car stereo (charging and streaming music via USB) on an Alpine CDA-117Ri, but I dont think thats a cause.
    Some screen grabs:

  • RAM usage increases with time, problem?

    Hi all,
Whislt I've been playing with linux on the side for a few years the past few weeks have been my first foray into using linux as my main OS, in the form of Arch. It's been a steep learning curve but I'm enjoying the experience and wealth of information. Previous flirts with Linux have been groping in the dark, pasting code from the internet and avoiding the terminal where possible.
Since going Arch full time I've noticed the RAM usage seems to increase when I leave it alone for a few hours. I'm running an old, around 2005 I think, Advent Laptop with 512MB, or 466MB according to free -m, RAM. I've allocated 2GB to swap which it dips into occasionally.
Typically I've been leaving open luakit & urxvt whislt running Awesome. If I leave it for a few hours and return the RAM has jumped from 30% or so to 80 or 90%. A reboot solves this.
I had a look around the interwebs but this is the first time my wed-fu has not unearthed one of those wonderful arch articles/post on what to do.
Any suggestions, or anything I can do to clarify the issue?

It does indeed, but only while the system is being actively accessed, as far as I know. An idle system (i.e. with no filesystem access) will have a stagnant file cache.
So I guess the question here would be, is your PC idle while you're "leaving" it? Do you use it as a fileserver, webserver, database, etc, or do you ssh in perform various tasks? Does 'free' report your free '-/+ buffers/cache' value as something minute?

  • RAM usage by Adobe Flash Player spikes when playing online flash games with 3D graphics

Hi. I have recently noticed a spike in RAM usage by my flash player plug-in whenever I play online flash games that use a 3D graphics engine (for example, Farmville 2 and Chefville by Zynga). Apart from the numerous times I receive an error message that the plug-in has failed, my RAM usage goes above 70% from the regular 40% with the plug-in consuming more than 1Gb. I have experienced the problem with the updated version of Adobe Flash Player on the newest releases of Firefox, Chrome and RockMelt. This spike in usage usually leads to a crash of my GPU (ATI Mobility Rabeon 4650 - 2Gb) My specs are as follows:
    OS - Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    Processor - Core i5
    Speed - 2.27 GHz
    RAM - 4.00Gb (3.86 Gb usable)
    HDD - 500 Gb (465 Gb usable)
I should also note that the required specifications for the latest version of Flash Player (11.7.700.202) requires processing speeds of 2.33Ghz. Could that be the issue? I am still to attempt downgrading of my Flash version to see if that could help reduce the RAM usage. Are there any other suggestions out there?

Hmmm... Win 7 will run faster than Mavericks with 8Gb. Even my Vm of 7 runs faster once I get it past all the startup processes.
It may or may not be a connectivity problen since Windows uses a different protocol, even though it's on the same hardware. Usually though, what affects OS X will affect BootCamp too.
    What browser?

  • I am running Windows XP, SP3. I have tried to run Firefox 4 several times but it doesn't work properly. The main page comes up showing the logo, below that is the search box, and below that is another box with nothing in it.

The external DVD/CD Writer will Not appear on your desktop when you attach it to your iMac.  It will appear in "Finder", which is in your Dock.
    Hope this helps

So I am sitting in Nagoya and have plugged in the hotel LAN cable because the WiFi wasn't kicking in and my battery capacity is 6-7 hours! Most other places had a good reliable WiFi which is what I would normally use; I'm thinking the WiFi is a bit of a battery-hog. Stuff you learn.

1 dashboard client process was not reponding, after quitting it, it loaded ok but the cpu is running at 20% whereas it had never been more than 8% when viewing dashboard previously.
dashboard client has 3 processes when open
Had look at that site and i couldnt find this process on their list.
    kernel_task
it has no process id, the user is root 1.2 52 140.00 MB 291.38 MB Intel
That's the main part of OSX (it does have a process id: zero). It always runs, and directly or indirectly starts & controls everything else. (I never noticed it's not listed on that site.)
also not listed on the site
    #122 iavd root 98.9 5 16.29 MB 604.24 MB Intel
Google says it's part of iAntiVirus. I'd recommend uninstalling it; there are no viruses that run on OSX. None. Zip. Zero. There is some "malware," such as Trojans, for Macs, though. But (unlike viruses that can get onto your system without your knowledge), you must approve their installation (via your Admin password) and/or operation (via the "This application was downloaded from the internet ..." prompt). For the gory details, see Thomas Reed's [Mac Virus Guide|http://www.reedcorner.net/thomas/guides/macvirus].
also if why safari is powerpc if the mac is intel? safari takes forever to open on the main user but is fast on the other user of this iMac
    #248 Safari Andrew 11.9 14 165.41 MB 1.34 GB PowerPC
It sounds like you have an old PPC version of Safari, running under Rosetta. Did you transfer from a PPC Mac and somehow brought over an old version?
Make sure there's only one version on your Mac; there might be an older one in a sub-folder inside your Applications folder, or in a user home folder.

  • DAQ Input Signal kept rising and stop at Max Voltage when run with nothing attached

I just installed PCI 6229 card and a BNC 2110 (Labview 8.6v). When I started the DAQ Input, the signal kept rising and stop at max Voltage  (10V) when run with nothing attached (instead of fluctuating at around 0). Just wondering what's wrong with it and how to solve it. Terminal configuration was "Differential"
I just created an input DAQ with a scope and while loop to look at it. Please let me know if I do anything wrong
    Thanks
    Solved!

I just re-read your original post.  Why do you have the terminal setting to differential?  This sounds like a single ended setup to me.  Change the terminal setting to RSE.  With a differential setting. you need to connect one source to AI1 and another source to AI9.  The difference between the two will be reported.  With RSE, only AI1 will matter and the voltage with respect to ground will be reported.  Make sure you have your AO ground tied to your AI ground.

  • Hi is it normal for a brand new imac CPU usage be constantly running at around 78% when nothing is running ?

Hi I bought a new imac for Christmas, set it all up and installed all updates including maverick os. At first the imac ran very slow so I left it to sort any updates out but keep getting an error message when I boot up, say unexpected restart etc.
Also the activity monitor shows the CPU is constantly at around 78% with nothing being open or used.
    Is this normal ?
To be honest I'm not impressed at how sluggish the mac is.
