800mhz g3 to g4 ram?
this seems to have been asked before but more for powerbook....can i take the extra ram from my g3 to a g4?...both ibooks...if not can i swap the ram with another g3 of any speed?
No. iBook G3 RAM differs from RAM needed for the iBook G4.
You can use the RAM from your iBook G3 in any other G3 iBook. They all take the same RAM, but I'm not certain about the earlier colored iBooks. They take the same size and type RAM, but I'm not familiar enough with them to know if they will take the 512 MB modules (due to firmware limitations). You would have to ask there, if that's what you're wondering.
As a matter of fact, upon further checking, it looks like the 300 MHz iBook G3 is limited to a 256 MB RAM module (but it would be the same type RAM as the iBook G3 (Dual USB) takes).

Running iTunes7 on a 800Mhz iMac G4 (256mb Ram)
Hi,
i have an iMac G4 Flat panel (800Mhz-256mb Ram) and after hearing some people complaining on these boards of not being able to run iTunes7 properly on macs with a similar spec as mine i have decided for the time being not to upgrade from iTunes6.
Is there anyone on here who is running iTunes7 successfully with less than a 1Ghz. What limitations can i expect from iTunes7 on my iMac.
ThanksI'm sure you will benefit by adding more RAM.
It will decrease disk access, which slows down the system.
About Cover Flow:
The first time I used it, it behaved rather slow and jerky.
Of course iTunes had to get all the artwork from the song files, which meant a lot of disk activity.
iTunes then stores the albumart in .itc files in ./Users/Username/Music/iTunes/album artwork/Local.
I guess this is done for faster access of the pictures.
The next time, I slowly flipped through Cover Flow to enable iTunes to pick up all artwork.
This morning, when I ran iTunes, and browsed through Cover Flow, it behaved somehow jerky (a lot of disk access), but after that it worked rather smooth.
I could only hear occasional disk access, so iTunes must have stored most pictures in RAM.
One more thing. I recently replaced the HD by a larger and faster one (200 GB Maxtor) which also speeds things up (reading/writing at least twice as fast than the 'old' drive). That also helps a bit.
Long story short:
Add more RAM. I'm sure you will not be disappointed by that investment.

IBook G4 800mhz processor update?
I own a iBook G4 800mhz processor with 640mb ram. On another website I read "If you had an iBook G4 800, you can easily swap out the 800mhz board for a 1ghz"
1. Is this true and where does one obtain a 1ghz processor for my type of iBook?
2. Will this be cost effective? In other words, will it increase computer performance significantly?
3. Is the installation of a 1ghz a self installation or should it be done by a professional, if at all?That is not really true. You cannot just swap out the CPU like you could in the g3 powerbooks or like it desktops. The 800 hmz and 1 ghz model use the same style logic board, so you could swap the 2 motherboards. But it would not be worth it.

IMac RAM - Apple Store Won't Sell, Order or Install
I have the iMac G4 800Mhz with 512 MB ram (256 MB original factory installed internal; 256 upgraded in the external at time of purchase).
I want to upgrade to 1 Gig ram. I was willing to take it to the Apple Store (Tampa) to get both chips replaced (the internal, non-owner replaceable is different from the external, user replaceable chip).
After a long run-around and much on-hold time, the store rep informed me that the internal ram chip (PC133, 168 pin SO DIMM) is not available from Apple, and further, the store cannot order it. He did suggest Crucial.com as a source, but said I'm on my own as far as installation goes. The store will not install 3rd party products.
I was willing to pay the premium and stay with Apple, to replace both chips ($300 total including installation).
I'm very disappointed that Apple will not support the upgrade of their product, even with all-Apple parts & labor.
Can anyone point me to an online tutorial that describes replacing the internal RAM chip? I'm mechanically inclined, and accustomed to handling electronics assemblies and tools. I was able to find tutorials on the external ram replacement.
My system has been somewhat slow since I installed Tiger. Also, I'm considering purchasing Virtual PC so that I can VPN via Cisco into work (my employer's IS only supports windoze (won't even support Unix)).
Any help on upgrading the internal ram slot, where to reliably purchase online, and any other comments on Tiger or VPN are appreciated.Hi Ellsworth,

Some advice needed Please Quicksilver 800MHZ
I have a Quicksilver PowerMac 800MHz.
Due to ram problems I need to replace the ram in this machine. I am running Tiger 10.4.11 and it is working fine at the moment.
I have read that if I cam running Tiger I can put 2 Gig of ram in this machine but before I spend money I need to know for sure how much ram I am able to put in. I am not sure if my Quicksilver is an older one or newer one Machine (CK132HANKSD). Can someone please help on this as at the moment I have only two 128 in place PC133 333 to keep me going.You only have 3 RAM slots. The max RAM per slot is 512MB.
Cheers, Tom -
My brand new iMac is behaving funky and I think it's a RAM issue. Quite often I am getting transparent lines in the icons on my Dock. Also, when running semi-intensive apps like Google SketchUp (3D modeling) or video editing apps, I constantly get the "spinning ball". Pardon my terms, I'm a Mac noob.
A few months ago I bought a MBP (17" 2.6 C2D), and upgraded the 2gRAM to 4g of Crucial RAM with no problem. Last month when I bought my iMac (20" 2.6 C2D), I took the (2) 1gb sticks of Apple OEM RAM and put them in the iMac.
Do any of you know of any known issues with this, or have any guesses?
I have confirmed that both sticks are properly seated, and my system reports seeing 2 gigs.
Thanks in advance!Hi BigStackGuy: I'm not sure if this will be causing your issues, but, I believe the RAM for the latest generation of iMacs is 800mHz speed. The RAM used in your MacBook Pro will be 667mHz speed. Hope this helps

IMac G4 flat panel & iTunes glitch
I just brought my old 2002 iMac Flat Panel back to life. It has a 800MhZ processor with 1GB RAM running OS 10.3.8. I've connected to the internet wirelessly using a USB receiver that picks up an excellent signal(across the room) from my Netgear wireless router. Weird thing is, there isn't any radio reception in iTunes v4.5. I was thrilled to get it back up and running after it died a few years back.(Just had a grey screen with an ominous blinking question mark folder). I just restored it because it's such a classic machine...just plain cool . I only wanted to run iTunes radio and possibly internet searches. When I click on "Radio" in the iTunes sidebar, there isn't any stations listed. I do have a strong signal all the time, so I'm thinking I'm overlooking a setting. Any thoughts , ideas or answers would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
RandyHere's a update. I've upgraded my OS to 10.3.9 and my iTunes to v7.7.1. Not only can't I get anything to appear in the iTunes radio window, but it's also the iTunes store and Podcasts while I'm in iTunes. My shared Library from my other computer comes through loud and clear. My Internet works fine. Here's the thing...I didn't set up ANY internet settings on this iMac. I simply plugged in a wireless receiver that picks up the signal from the wireless router across the room and ,bam, instant Internet signal. Can somebody help me out?

Unable to install weblogic server 6.1 (evaluation) on w2000
Just after the installation program unpacks the files, the process is aborted.
We are trying to install it on a PIII 800Mhz machine with 128MB RAM and w2000. When executing the same file on a NT 4.0 ( same machine ) there is NO problem.
Any hint ? thanks a lotGenerally, an install fails at the point you describe due to there not being enough space in the TEMP folder (where ever your machine has this set to). Check to
see that there is enough space on the disk that contains the TEMP folder. Even though the two versions of the OS are installed on the same machine, the TEMP
folders may be on differenct disks.

Help! Installation Nightmare!
I just recieved an iMac g4 from my brother. It has an 800mhz processor and has 512 mb of ram. I recieved the computer with osx 10.2 but i want to upgrade to 10.4 tiger. I have the tiger install disk and i put it in the computer and click reset as the installation prompts me to. When the computer resets, suddenly a grey screen with numbers and letters everywhere appear and on the back of that screen is a translucent sign with a large power button on it that says reset your computer by shutting it down and then turn it back on. I did this, but no luck and the same screen appeared....I don't understand why this is happening. Please help!
The screen you mention seeing, indicates a Kernel Panic.
And in an older machine that had previously only ran older
versions of OS X prior to 10.3, and/or OS 9.2.2, this may
be due to a problem with the installed RAM chip quality.
That would be a likely first thing to consider; but there are
other possible causes of a kernel panic. At least you have
not installed the OS X 10.4 yet, at this point, have you?
• Resolving Kernel Panics:
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
• Technical Note TN2063: Understanding and Debugging Kernel Panics
http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/technotes/tn2002/tn2063.html
These two web sites have a fair amount of information on them to help
to learn how to deal with Kernel Panic issues, and causes.
• iMac G4 Take-apart for Drive and Ram upgrades:
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/imacg4/imacg4takeapart.html
Is the OS X 10.4 installation disc, a retail black label version with
white/silver X in the middle of it; or is is a gray-label disc which
was part of a software set originally sold with another computer?
Which iMac G4 model do you have? Since there were several with a
few different processor models, they each have differences, too. It
would appear both the listed 800MHz models use PC133 RAM...
Since the computer shipped with a 256MB chip in the factory-installed
RAM slot, and nothing in the user-accessible lower SO-DIMM RAM slot,
there is not enough RAM in the original location, to run OS X 10.4. But
you could remove the bottom plate of the computer, and take out the
RAM chip in that location, and then put the plate back on, and restart
the computer (without the install disc in the computer) to see how it
acts. In Jaguar 10.2.8, the computer would probably work fine. In 10.4
the situation may be quite different and a better quality 512MB or 1GB
chip could be put into the lower slot (assuming a 256MB was added)
and it may work properly, even for Tiger 10.4.
Did the computer include the original software set of discs? One of
them includes an Apple Hardware Test on it. You may seek to test
the computer to see if anything comes up from a test interval.
Hopefully the matter only involves upgrading the RAM chips.
Good luck & happy computing! -

Problems installing 8.1.6 on Redhat 8.0
Hi - has anyone managed to get 8.1.6 running on Redhat 8.0?
My experience has been:
To get OUI running I had to set LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5
It then runs through the installation until it tries to build a starter database. Then it gives an ora-12547 TNS: lost contact.
OK - I let the installation finish and then use dbassist - however same error (ora-12547).
This seems to be telling me I running short of resources. It is an
Intel Pentium III 800Mhz with 512 MB RAM
sysctl gives
kernel.sem = 250 32767 250 256
kernel.shmmni = 4096
kernel.shmall = 268435456
kernel.shmmax = 268435456
The environment variables I have been using.
ORACLE_BASE=/opt/oracle
ORACLE_HOME=$ORACLE_BASE/product/8.1.6
ORACLE_SID=testdata

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:$ORACLE_HOME/lib
CLASSPATH=$CLASSPATH:$ORACLE_HOME/JRE/:$ORACLE_HOME/jlib:$ORACLE_HOME/product/jlib
Has anyone had any success with this configuration? - if so, how?
Thanks for any help
LanceAll I could tell you is why you might me getting can't find jre..
Put the bin diirectory in your path enviroment variable
assuming that you have the jre installed on your system..and you have the symbolic link from jre to jdk116_v5
example:
one you have the jdk installed..and the symbolic links from jre - jdkxx
bash shell$
CLASSPATH=/usr/local/jre/lib
export CLASSPATH
if the above doesn't work
try this
CLASSPATH=/usr/local/jre/lib/classes.zip
export CLASSPATH
summary: you program is not able to find the JRE enviroment...the above method tell where to look for..etc..
good luck..

Why the ipod touch (1st generation) doesn't have new updates ??
i just want to know why the ipod touch (first generation) doesn't have any new updates! all the new itouch have this great features and people with old itouch cant have it! its not fair! thank you!
Your touch has a 400MHz processor and 128MB RAM, the 2nd Gen has a 500MHz processor and 128MB RAM, the 3rd Gen touch has a 600MHz processor and 256MB RAM, and the 4th Gen touch has a 800MHz processor with 256MB RAM... Obviously yours cannot handle the new OS as it was designed primarily with the 3rd and 4th Gens in mind... It's like older computers cannot support newer OS (ie a computer built for windows xp cannot handle windows 7 and a computer built for panther cannot handle leopard.)
