802.11ac 5Ghz Connect at 40Mz Channel Width?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013
I have a 15" Late 2013 tMBP running Yosemite.  My router is a Buffalo WZR-1750DHPD running dd-wrt from the factory.  Build 23709c for those that are familiar with dd-wrt.  The router is dual band and has the ability to set 20/40/80Mhz channel widths.  No matter what I do, I can get my rMBP to connect at anything other than 20Mz.  To see how I'm connecting I use the Option + wifi icon in the upper right.  As you can see it say 20Mhz.
I have the router set for 40Mhz on the 5Ghz band.  I'm stumped.

Hi!
Is your EA6500 running on the classic firmware? Or have you already upgraded it to the Smart Wifi?
You mentioned that the channel width is at 80 MHz. Was the channel on Auto? You may try other channels & find the best pair for the 80 MHz Channel Width.
Also, check the Asus PCE-AC 66 PCI card wireless properties, whether it's maximized or was just set to N-only. This can be checked by going to Control Panel > Device Manager > Network Adapters > right click on the aforementioned adapter then choose properties > Advanced Tab > check under Properties List & corresponding Value.

  • 802.11n 5ghz Connection Problem with OS X 10.4.11 Tiger

I've searched the communities for answer to this vexing issue to no avail, so I am trying a post.
    Situation:
I have a dual-band 1TB TC at home set up with three networks: 802.11g/b/a, 802.11n ((5ghz), and Guest Network (g/b).  There are four Macs accessing it: (2) mid-2009 15" MacBook Pros, 2009 MacBook Air, mid-2006 24" iMac.  All are running Snow Leopard 10.6.7 except the 24" iMac (Core 2 Duo) running 10.4.11.
All Macs can connect to to all networks EXCEPT the iMac which has a problem with the 802.11n (5ghz) connection ONLY.  The iMac has the n-enabler installed (can see it registered when looking at Network Utility).  In fact, the iMac will connect but any attempt to access to the Internet or TC disk stalls the system.  Switch back to 802.11g and everything is fine.
I've looked at the Console for guidance but cannot find anything problematic (to my eyes, anyway).  I booted this iMac to Snow Leopard from an external disk and the problem cannot be duplicated, so I am assuming this is not a hardware issue with the iMac.  I also, did a fresh install of Tiger and updated it to 10.4.11 plus all Airport updates and n-ebabler on an external drive, booted from this drive and have the same issue with the 5 ghz n-connection.
By the way, when connected to 802.11n (5ghz) network with the iMac, I have full bars on the menubar fan, but then one bar drops after a minute or so.  When this happens, I cannot access the Internet nor the TC disk.
I've tried various tweaks as described in the many, many discussion threads here: resets, establish new locations, clear/repair the keychain, and many others.
I did not have this problem in the past with this iMac, so don't know what has changed with the system configuration.  The g-connection is rock-solid, so Internet access is fine, but file transfer speeds ober the network are obviously much slower now than with the 5ghz n-connection.
Anyone have any ideas?  Without suggesting an upgrade to 10.6...clearly that should do the trick.  I have other reasons for running Tiger on the iMac.
    Thanks.

I wonder if all the activity was too much for the hard drive and it failed....you might contact Apple about this repair extension program to see if you qualify...

That's odd. I assume this is the 5 GHz band, right?
Have you tried changing the router to do auto 20/40?
Have you tried deleting and reconnecting to the wifi network?

  • HT3546 802.11ac bridge connectivity Issues

I have been unsuccessful in connecting any 802.11ac bridge, regardless of brand. This is a new airport extreme and should accept any ac compatible bridge. Manual setup also does not work. No luck connecting in a secured or unsecured network. Suggestions?

You might want to review the System Requirements for the "ac" product, as it sounds like you are trying to set up the "ac" product using an older 5.x.x version of AirPort Utility. Don't think that will work well at all.
    From the Product Specifications:    http://www.apple.com/airport-extreme/specs/
    Setup and Administration
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 5 or later and AirPort Utility 1.3
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and AirPort Utility 6.3
The Apple 802.11ac products will "bridge" together just fine, whether you are using Ethernet or wireless to connect the devices togerther.
Setup is virtually automatic using AirPort Utility 6.3 on a Mac, or the utility on an iOS device.
An Ethernet "bridge" would probably work with another brand, but I doubt that wireless would work, as Apple uses proprietary settings to "extend a wireless network". Chances are very slim that you will be able to get Apple to work with another brand of router using wireless.

  • Speed Tests Results for 802.11ac Wireless Connections

Using the new Apple MacBook Air with 802.11ac wireless, I tested copying a file and a folder to both the new 802.11ac AirPort Extreme router housing a USB-connected hard disk and the less recent 802.11n Apple AirPort Extreme router housing a similar USB-connected hard disk.
The results of the tests are summarized in the table below. The movie file was ripped from a DVD movie, and the Microsoft folder is simply the Microsoft Office 2011 folder in my Applications folder containing 14,231 items.
The MacBook Air computer was located 6–8 feet away from each router with no intervening obstructions. While this was not a scientific test, it demonstrated to me that 802.11ac wireless is clearly superior to 802.11n in a real world setting. I assume that the lower relative performance of 802.11ac versus 802.11n for the large folder containing many files is due to overhead in copying and writing files from and to the hard disks. Ditto for the Gigabit Ethernet test.

    Great resource for speedtesting: www.speedtest.net
Will show you ping speed, upload/download speeds for your connection. Try for each then post results.

  • New 802.11ac 5ghz channels

I can't seem to set 5 Ghz channel. Every time I hit update it resets back to Automatic.
    In the UK.
    Anyone else confirm this please?

Figured it out. If I use the app the channel saves. If I use the utility in windows it's always automatic.

  • I have airport extreme 802.11AC as a base that connect to Cable modem. How can I connect D-link DIR-655 to AE to utilize as an extender or repeat?

    Hello-
I have wireless router Airport Extreme 802.11AC that connect direct to Cable modem...how can I setup the D-Link DIR-655 wireless router to AE and act as extender or repeater?. Thanks in advance.

Apple has done their best to install proprietary software in their wireless routers that is designed to only allow other Apple routers to repeat or extend the network wirelessly.
So, the chances are extremely small that a D-Link....or another other router for that matter.....could be configured to do what you ask.
There are no settings on an AirPort Extreme that would allow a D-Link device to extend the network, so all that you can do is experiment with different settings on the D-Link device to see if it might be possible for it to extend the network.
A post on a D-Link support forum might be a good idea to see if any D-Link specialists have some ideas on this topic.
    Good luck.

  • Linksys WUMC710 bridge crashes Airport Extreme (802.11ac) network

I have just bought the Linksys/Cisco WUMC710 802.11ac bridge to use with my Apple Airport Extreme (the 802.11ac). After resolving some channel related issues getting the Linksys to see the network, I now find that after about 30 seconds of having the Linksys on the wireless network, it causes the Airport to go into an error mode (orange flashing light) and the whole wireless and wired network (running through the Airport) fluctuates or disappears entirely. Powering down the Linksys restores everything back to normal.
I am on latest Airport firmware, and v1.0.1 for the Linksys. The Linksys is about 5m away from the Airport at the moment. Security is WPA2 personal.
Any thoughts on what might be causing this?

    Hello
I tried to set the WUMC710 (Firmware 1.00.18) and Airport time Capsule 2TB (Firmware 7.7.3) and I could not in any of the ways ...
    Any solution??
The Time Capsule Airport every time you connect the Linksys restarts ... because?
    Thanks

  • WLAN API is misreporting 802.11ac channel widths

I'm working with a high density Aruba Networks wifi deployment. To avoid co-channel interference, I've dialed my channel widths back to 20MHz only. I've confirmed the config with the vendor and written up the results of what I've found on my blog (if you want better detail) http://wi-infi.blogspot.com. I'm connecting to an Aruba 225 access point and getting an 802.11ac connection on channel 149, but the wifi tools on the mac are reporting the channel width at 40MHz.
    I'm using a late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina 13 with OSX 10.10.2.
An option click on the wifi icon shows Channel 149 (5 GHz, 40 Mhz), PHY mode is 802.11ac, and an airport -I command lists the same with a lastTXRate of 174 and an MCS of 8.
I do know that the beacon frame from the AP reports 20MHz only, but it is still also reporting a secondary channel above the first. I don't think it's supposed to do this as it is unused, but it may still be there because VHT is still enabled on the 20MHz channels.
This results in a problem because many of the wifi utilities use the CoreWLAN API in OSX to report what they're seeing and it's incorrect.
I also have a suspicion that this may be related, at least loosely, to the problems I'm having with MacBooks having trouble maintaining wifi connectivity.

There are other adapters out there that are 3x3 in which I have tested also. It really depends on the driver to be honest. Even on a 3x3, the card connection speed shows the same as your and that is max I have ever seen. Now the actual througout is a different story.  What your connected at doesn't mean that your throughput is that great. Yeah it's better than 802.11n, but you really need a clean environment and you also have to be close enough to achieve the high rates of AC. Here is a list of AC products for reference:

  • Unable to set 5ghz 80 mhz channel width on EA6500

    Hi
My desktop pc has an Asus PCE-AC 66 PCI card (supports up to 1300 mbps wifi) and is only 5m or so away from the the EA6500 router without any obstructions - yet i cannot connect at 1300 mbps AC wifi. On the EA6500 router, i have selected 'mixed' as network mode under 5ghz (since i have some other devices which connect on wifi N on 5ghz) but if i select channel width as 80mhz, i have issues connecting to the 5ghz network on the desktop pc. The desktop briefly connects and under status it says lan speed as 1.3gbps but then it disconnects and i can't connect again. If i select channel width as 'auto' then no problems, the desktop can connect but lan speeds are only 400-600 mbps. Any idea why i cannot connect at 1300 mbps? I suspect i may connect at 1300 mbps if i choose network mode as 'AC' but then my other wifi N devices on 5ghz won't be able to connect.
    Cheers

  • Does Airport Extreme still function at 802.11ac if an 802.11n device is connected to network?

I have an Airport Extreme and iPhone 6 which both operate on 802.11ac. I have noticed when an 802.11n device (DVD player) is also connected to my network my connection rate on my iPhone 6 drops to 802.11n rather than the faster 802.11ac. All of the literature I have read states that Airport Extreme is capable of transmitting at both 2.4ghz and 5ghz simultaneously (I have no questions about that), however is Airport Extreme incapable of transmitting to both 802.11ac and 802.11n devices simultaneously? If so, why did I spend all that money on a router that boasts 802.11ac technology but slows to 802.11n if an 802.11n device is connected?

It should do both at once.. AC is only on 5ghz and I highly doubt the DVD player is using 5ghz.. however you might need to force the phone to connect to 5ghz.. as it will always join the strongest signal not the best or fastest wireless..
So simply set two wireless names.. eg AE24ghz for the 2.4ghz and AE5ghz for the 5ghz band.. whatever you name it include the freq as it makes it easier to know what is going on.
Then force the phone to join the 5ghz and it should work just fine at AC speed. Even as the DVD is running on 2.4ghz. Of course if bandwidth is consumed by both and your internet is limited it may reduce your speed to well below N wireless even.

  • 2013 MBA with 802.11ac won't choose 5GHz even when faster

I have a 2013 MBA and new (802.11ac) Airport Extreme.  With the base station in dual mode (2.4 and 5.2 networks sharing same SSID), the MBA refuses to connect to the 5GhZ network most of the time, even when very close to basestation.  This is annoying for wireless Time Machine backups and other high-throughput use cases (files copies to/from network are another).  Without moving computer, when I set basestation to use diff name for 5GHz network and then manually select it, transfer speeds go from ~12MB/sec to >40MB/sec (impressive!).
Using iStumbler, I see that the 2.4GHz network indeed shows "better" signal levels, BUT IN THE REAL WORLD the 5GHz link is MUCH faster.  What's up with that?
I'd like to go back to dual-mode just for elegance and simplicity.   Plus, it seems like a bug.
My question is:  Can I force the MBA to always link to 5GHz network, or at least its propensity to pick it despite 2.4GHz link (falsely) appearing to be better?
    Thanks!

I actually install large wireless networks professionally, so maybe I can help clear up a few misconceptions.
To the original poster, there really isn't a way at this point to force the MBA to select the 5.0GHz network, but this really isn't a "bug" of the MBA.  It's really a missing feature from the AirPort.
Your assumptions on how the client device works are correct.  They select the band based on the signal strength (basically Signal to Noise Ratio [SNR]).  This is actually a function of the NIC itself and is based in the hardware.  Since the vast majority of client NIC cards are manufactured by a couple of companies, it will probably take them a while to change the operation, and for marketing reasons, I don't know if they want to at this point.
The vast majority of people that I encounter every day don't understand that there's more to wireless performance than signal strength.  They look at the corner of their device and say, "I have 4 bars, look at how great my network is.  Yeah, it's a little slow, but that's just how wireless is".  Companies that sell consumer wireless access points are able to say "Cover your house with a single device".  I really think that the lack of consumer awareness is what causes trouble for those of us (like the original poster) that understand that there's more to it than that.  Even OS-X falls into this marketing bubble.  Why do I have to hold down Alt and click on the wireless icon to actually see performance data?  In my opinion, the icon should be the Transmit Rate as a number and I hold Alt to see the RSSI when I need to troubleshoot, but that would scare most people.  For these marketing reasons, I don't think that you will find client devices selecting 5.0GHz by default until 802.11ac really gains in popularity.
The other option, which wouldn't require a tremendous amount of work on Apple's part is a feature that many enterprise wireless manufacturers refer to as "Band Steering".  Basically, the AP (AirPort Base Station) will ask the client for its capabilities.  Once it knows that the client is 5GHz capable, it pushes the client over to that frequency and there isn't anything that the client can do about it.  If I knew how, I would be requesting that feature as an advanced option of the AirPort product line.  That way, those of us that really care about wireless performance are able to get it without having to hack through and broadcast a 2.4GHz network that will basically be unusable in the coming years since the new wireless standard is 5.0GHz only.

I have a 13" mid 2011 MB Air 128gb and a Time Cap.802.11AC. My HD is maxed out because of 30GB of photo storage after migration to 10.10.3 Photos. I have reduced apps and files as much as possible so the only thing left is to move the photos.  Please recommend an external drive compatible for connecting to my TC 802.11ac and moving the iPhoto Lib off my HD which will free approx 15 gbs. of space. I don't plan on using it for any other purpose so a small capacity drive will suffice. I know the "optimization" is supposed to adjust for this condition but I don't trust that assertion.I only have 2gb free space remaining.

I don't plan on using it for any other purpose so a small capacity drive will suffice.
If you really only want such a small capacity drive.. what about just buying a 32GB or 64GB USB memory stick.
You should still have a back up to the internal hard disk of the AC TC.
Or just buy a WD Passport.. don't waste your money buying 500GB as it is only a bit more to buy 1TB and a bit more again for 2TB.. For future use if you do buy a USB hard disk buy 2.5" type.. and buy 1TB or if the budget stretches 2TB..
