802.11i Supported by Cisco Wireless Products?
Hello all,
Got a customer looking to install a wireless network however does not wish to do this unless the units support 802.11i.
Are there any routers/cards that support this that I can recommend?
Thanks,
Leon
There is no Cisco hardward supports 802.11i yet. There is a plan for Cisco to provide 802.11i. I am told not to disclose any future new hardward and new feature information. You need to talk to the local Cisco account team.

Interoperability of cisco wireless products?
I've been doing a lot of research on various Cisco wireless products and the options are kind of confusing.
I'll start with my deployment; I have two locations both of which have a manufacturing and warehouse environments (no climate control) and regular offices.
Location 1 needs 3 APs on the production floor and 1 in the offices.
Location 2 needs 5 APs on the warehouse floor and 4 for the offices.
I was thinking about using the Cisco 521 APs for both the production floor and offices and the Cisco 526 Wireless Controller for Location 1. I figure that will give them room for expansion and keep the costs low.
For location 2 I was thinking about the Aironet 1240AG APs for the warehouse floor, Aironet 1140AG APs for the offices and then a Cisco 2112 Wireless Controller to manage all the APs.
Both locations require WPA (or WPA2) encryption and roaming.
My questions are:
Will the 521 APs work with the 2112 controller? For that matter, what sort of interoperability is there with the APs and controllers? Can I manage any Cisco AP with any Cisco Controller?
Are there any cheaper APs than the 1140AG that will work with the 2112 controller?
Is the 1240AG a good choice for a non-climate controlled warehouse environment? The APs are going to be mounted on the ceiling which is roughly 50 feet high and I'm going to be very upset if I deploy these APs and then have one fail during the summer 6 months later because it wasn't made for volatile environments.
The 521 APs are only going to be about 15 feet up so they can be accessed with a ladder so I'm not so worried about them.
Thanks! Will the 521 APs work with the 2112 controller?
No.
Are there any cheaper APs than the 1140AG that will work with the 2112 controller?
You could try the 1130. 1140 supports 802.11n while 1130 is a/b/g only.
Is the 1240AG a good choice for a non-climate controlled warehouse environment?
The 1240, like the 1130, supports a/b/g only while the 1250 supports a/b/g/n. The newer 1260 is controller-based only. The 1240, 1250 and 1260 use external antennae that's an OPTION. -

Apple left out support for 802.11i, secure wireless networking WAP2
We just bought this iMac from Apple in July, and I'm very unhappy that Apple designed the AirPort networking for one generation earlier security with wireless networking.
The 802.11i standard, which supports very secure WAP2 without the need for a Radius Server (I believe 802.11i refers to this as personal mode) was adopted by the IEEE in 2004.
Apparently, 2 years isn't enough time for Apple to get the correct chipset into the computer. This system supports the earlier standards only, WAP and WEP. To achieve the newer standard requires a different chipset in the AirPort hardware. Apple supports 802.11i in the stand-alone AirPort gateways, and may support it in the newer Intel Core 2 Duo systems as well. Grumble, grumble, grumble.
For Apple marketing and customer support folks reading this, I'd appreciate your thoughts and suggestions on fixing this.
iMac Intel Core Duo 17" Mac OS X (10.4.8)
iMac Intel Core Duo 17" Mac OS X (10.4.8)"I can find no indication of an Apple AirPort product that says it is capable of WPA2"
mrwheels,
You sound like someone looking for an argument. I'm not sure what the relevance of your statement really is, and I've also never heard of 802.11i. The only standards I've heard of are "b" and "g," not "i." Why don't you fill me in, as I've been using WPA2 since earlier this year? I believe my system automatically updated to it from WPA during one of the software updates, I think it was 10.4.6 in April, as I specifically recall having one iMac that was encrypted with WPA while another had WPA2. There was some sort of temporary issue that occurred with that setup, but, unfortunately, I can't remember what it was, since it lasted such a short time (the few minutes until I installed the update on the second iMac, as I recall).
Since the update was not a problem for me, the job of reading the update read-me's to determine exactly when it occurred will have to fall to you. In addition, if you look back at these discussion threads during the time from Jan to April, you will see that there were a goodly number of users who were having severe AirPort connection problems with their Core Duo iMacs. I wasn't one of them. They ALL reported having their problems resolved with the installation of the 10.4.6 software update.
I am using WPA2 on my four 20-inch Core Duo iMacs [purchased at three different times from two different Apple sources] as well as my G4 iBook and other Macs. They have been using WPA2 on both an AirPort Express base station network, and, at a different location, on an AirPort Extreme base station network, both of which are more than two years old. No matter what Apple's printed materials disclose, WPA2 is in fact supported.
"Apple is selling products that are 2 years behind in supporting a critical wireless security standard"
Based on what I've stated, and the fact that there are many Discussions members also using WPA2 with their AirPort base stations, that is baloney:))

Hello Guys,
My wireless network was very good before putting Cisco WLC 4402 with version 3.2.171.6.
In my network there are two SSID's one for official and another for guest, which is working one single LAP 1142.( Total 12 LWAP is here)
we decided to manage all the ap and deployed WLC but now wireless network is very slow, local gateways is pinging with 80 ms. before WLC it was 1 ms.
Pls. suggest or come up with question to reach a solution.

Cisco Wireless Location Appliance
dear
i have WCS with 500 ap License
i need to have Cisco Wireless Location Appliance what lisens i need for 500 ap
please explain to me thatHi Ahmed,
This is the upgrade License SKU for upgrading WCS to WCS Location;
WCS-LOC-UPG-K9
Supports deployment of Cisco WCS on a single server only.
For customers upgrading from their existing Cisco WCS base licenses to equivalent Cisco WCS location licenses running Cisco WCS Software Release 4.1 or later.
Available as Cisco WCS location in increments of 50, 100, or 500 lightweight access points.
Customers currently using this license with Cisco WCS Software Release 4.0 are encouraged to upgrade to Cisco WCS Software Release 4.1, but they are not required to do so.
Order the Correct Cisco WCS SKUs
The process to order Cisco WCS SKUs for WCS-STANDARD-K9, WCS-LOC-UPG-K9, WCS-WLSE-UPG-K9 and WCS-ENT-K9 is presented below. To request help with ordering, please contact Cisco Customer Service: http://www.cisco.com/go/customerservice.
1. Login to the Cisco Ordering Tool.
2. Enter the family SKU of WCS-STANDARD-K9 or WCS-LOC-UPG-K9 or WCS-WLSE-UPG-K9 or WCS-ENT-K9 into "Enter Product" in the Ordering Tool and then press "Enter."
3. The family SKU will display in the ordering area. (Figure 6).
4. Select the "Line" for the family SKU
5. Once you have been taken to the configuration screen, select one of these options from the left side (Figure 7):
For WCS-STANDARD-K9 select one of the sub-SKUs based on the following:
Base: WCS Standard AP Base Option
Location: WCS Standard AP Location Option
For WCS-WLSE-UPG-K9 select one of the sub-SKUs based on the following:
Base: WLSE to WCS AP Base Upgrade Option
Location: WLSE to WCS AP Location Upgrade Option
**For WCS-LOC-UPG-K9 select the sub-SKU:
**WCS AP Location Upgrade Option
For WCS-ENT-K9 select the sub-SKU:
WCS Enterprise AP Location Option
For the WCS-STANDARD-K9 or **WCS-LOC-UPG-K9 SKU families, customers are prompted to order the optional CD (WCS-CD-K9), for a nominal charge, during the ordering process. The WCS-CD-K9 contains one software image of Cisco WCS Software Release 4.1 on a CD for Windows and Linux. This CD is shipped by U.S. mail to the purchaser's address. The optional CD is not available for WCS-WLSE-UPG-K9 because this SKU family already ships in CD format.
6. The right side of the screen will display the licenses available (Figure 7). The price for each SKU is displayed in the Ordering Tool.
7. Each license is orderable in a quantity of one (1) for the quantity blocks specified. To add multiple quantities of license blocks, you must go back to the main screen and order additional family SKUs and then select the sub-SKU option and license quantity block required. Repeat this process as needed, until the correct quantity of license blocks for your sub-SKU have been ordered.

Help Enabling 802.11b Support
Can anyone help? All I want to do is enable 802.11b support on my Cisco 877W. My 802.11g clients can see and attach to it no problems. My 802.11b clients cannot see it at all. I have tried all sorts but nothing has helped. My config looks like this:
interface Dot11Radio0
no ip address
encryption key 1 size 128bit 7 BC48CE99C4E9B683819990D3C1A5 transmit-key
encryption mode wep mandatory
ssid *****
authentication open
speed basic-1.0 basic-2.0 basic-5.5 6.0 9.0 basic-11.0 12.0 18.0 24.0 36.0
48.0 54.0
station-role root
no dot11 extension aironet
bridge-group 1
bridge-group 1 spanning-disabled
What do I need to add to make it visible and available to 802.11b clients?
Many Thanks,
MattI'd start by defaulting the AP back to factory default, no WEP, no authentication.
Check to see if the 802.11b clients can connect.
If all the 802.11b clients are running the same software, check to see that they are up-to-date drivers & client software. If you're using the MS client software (Zero Wireless Config) try a client using the vendor's client software instead.
If the clients are not eve associating, look at the basic parameters: things like preamble length (legacy default is "long" which is a one meg data rate)
If you can get the 802.11b client to connect whith all open parameters, then add WEP. Be advised that some clients need the WEP entered as HEX, not ASCII.
For example ASCII "ABCD" would be "41 42 43 44" in hex ... make sure you're using the same system. IF youre using something like "12345abcde" that can be a valid (but incorrect) hex string when ou really intend for it to be ASCII.
Also note that leading or training spaces (ASCII 20) are valid characters. Make sure you do not have leading or training spaces in your WEP (unless you really want them there, in whch case, make sure they're there)
Make sure the Ethernet format is correct: use the Web GUI to set up. Check the parameters on the "Interfaces" page and do not (at least initially) use the "Best throughput" or "Best Range" settings, leave it at "Default Settings"
If your 802.11b clients are PDAs, bar-code scanners, or other hand-held devices, check that they are at default settings for the standard 802.11b protocols; some use proprietary protocols for better performance or security.
That's about it for me ... let us know if any of that changes (works / doesn't work, but acting differently / doesn't work, looks the same).
Good Luck

Clarification on 802.1x support for 3560
Hi all: have a question on support of 802.1x support in 3560.
This (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps5528/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a00801e85c4.html) one talks about 802.1x configuration on a 3560 with 12.1(19)EA1
But this tool http://tools.cisco.com/ITDIT/CFN/jsp/index.jsp tells me that IEEE 802.1x-VLAN Assignment is supported only on ED Releases 12.2(25)SEE1, 12.2(25)SED1, 12.2(25)SEC2, 12.2(25)SEB4, 12.2(25)SEA, 12.2(25)SE for 3560.
Does this mean Cisco is recommending using 12.2.(25) for 802.1x for these switches eventhough 12.1(19) supports it?
Thanks
RaviOnly the following 3560 are supported in 12.1.19EA1:
Catalyst 3560-24PS
Catalyst 3560-48PS
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat3560/12119ea1/ol510401.htm#84866
The rest of 3560 have different minimum IOS requirements:
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat3750/125see1/ol9586.htm#wp84866
So, wht I am trying to say is, the feature, 802.1x-Vlan Assignment is supported in 12.1(19)EA1 but depending on what kind of 3560, it will require a minimum IOS. If your 3560 is either Catalyst 3560-24PS or Catalyst 3560-48PS, you can run 802.1x-Vlan Assignment on it.

Network ready for Cisco wireless ?
I know for IPT their is lots of network readiness guides. Is their anything like that for Cisco wireless (with central controler)? We looking at putting in Dell swithcs and not cisco. Anybody have any switch level feture I should be looking out for?
For autonomous you would likely need less features on a switch then with autonomous access points. I'm not a fan of Dell switches, but at the edge they should be fine. With the lightweight APs you don't have to trunk to the access points ('cept H-REAP configs), so you could potentially plug them into hubs!
I would probably look for a PoE midspan if you are not using the new 3560E swithes. Microsemi sells a managed hi-power midspan that support all Cisco access points all the way up to the 1250s (and assumptively beyond). Purchasing 802.3af PoE now seems like a bad idea. -
Meraki vs Cisco Wireless Solutions
Can anybody out there share any information on company called Meraki? We currently have a Cisco wireless solution but our administration has suddenly been looking into Meraki as a replacement. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks...I actually have both product sets running- our main campus network has over 3,000 APs (Cisco) and we have a 6-month old Meraki installation on our London campus with 35 MR16 APs. While our lightwieght Cisco deployment has been mostly fine on the client-facing side of life, we have had a lot of angst with controllers (we've been in the game since 2006 on LWAPP/CAPWAP, with hundreds of Aeronet fat APs prior) and various code versions through the years. I also follow the industry pretty closely as an IT writer, and so have watched the likes of Aerohive get more interesting (also controllerless) and architectures like Motorola's WiNG 5 greatly de-emphasize the controller. Personally, I've become a lot more open-minded about the cloud and cynical about the expense and grief of controllers. But it's far from black and white- there is no "this is clearly better than that", especially when you've got a wild mix of client devices that just want the network to work and could care less whose label is on the AP.
Bake-offs have validity, but more so (to me) on the "how easy is it to administer" perspective than "will it work for clients?" front. Both our Meraki and Cisco environments nicely serve our clients in dense environments- if they didn't, they wouldn't stay in business. The interference detection and reporting is somewhat overmarketed (again, my opinion) as often interference sources are fleeting and you can't possibly react to every one. Meraki has provided a lot of for things like rate limiting, firewalling, a great guest portal (I can't speak favorably of Cisco's guest portal at all, and BlueSocket has the absolute best I've seen yet) that our Cisco controllers don't do without help from outside boxes- but if you already have those boxes you may not care. I do take Cisco to task on really clunky debug in the CAPWAP world, and there are often gaps between what you can do with WCS/NCS and what you have to do on the controllers directly. The point? Again, it's just not black and white.
For me, I would certainly go with Meraki again for deployments up to a certain size- like a few hundred APs- as one who is living the Meraki life currently and cringes at the price controllers fetch. It does flawless with 802.1x and has a pretty robust feature set in it (not sure why someone above is saying it doesn't)- if you need it. I've had zero problems since putting Meraki in where as I can't wait to get rid of my WiSMs in favor of 5508s (but really wish cisco would provide a VM-based controller like Bluesocket does), but both products have warts at times on the UI. Things I've griped about Meraki was quick to address or put on the short road map, Cisco not so much but eventually they resond to enough grousing. (Yes- my opinion only)
Enough rambling- I'd say visit customers that have both, and don't discount either until you do. Cisco has market share, Meraki is part of the interesting new guard that dares to do things differently. They both work, but you have to find what's right for you. -

No of SSID support on Cisco WLC
Hi All,
Can you please help me on providing below details on Cisco wireless controller?
1. No of SSID support on Cisco WLC
2. Is it possible to restrict SSID on AP's (e.g. I have 10 SSID's configured on controller, I want first 10 Access points use set of SSID (SSID 1-5), and rest of the AP use SSID 6-10.
Thanks
JamalHi Jamal,
Just to add a touch to the great info from Robert (+5 points Robert)
The feature you are looking for is called WLAN Override in WLC 4.x versions.
Enabling WLAN Override
By default, access points transmit all defined WLANs on the controller. However, you can use the WLAN Override option to select which WLANs are transmitted and which ones are not on a per access point basis. For example, you can use WLAN override to control where in the network the guest WLAN is transmitted or you can use it to disable a specific WLAN in a certain area of the network.
From this doc;
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/controller/4.0/configuration/guide/c40wlan.html#wp1114777
Once you create a new WLAN, the WLAN > Edit page for the new WLAN appears. In this page you can define various parameters specific to this WLAN including General Policies, RADIUS Servers, Security Policies, and 802.1x Parameters.
**Check Admin Status under General Policies to enable the WLAN. If you want the AP to broadcast the SSID in its beacon frames, check Broadcast SSID.
Note: You can configure up to sixteen WLANs on the controller. The Cisco WLAN Solution can control up to sixteen WLANs for Lightweight APs. Each WLAN has a separate WLAN ID (1 through 16), a separate WLAN SSID (WLAN name), and can be assigned unique security policies. Lightweight APs broadcast all active Cisco WLAN Solution WLAN SSIDs and enforce the policies that you define for each WLAN.
From this good doc;
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk722/tk809/technologies_configuration_example09186a0080665d18.shtml#c3
In 5.x versions you will use AP Groups, because in WLC 5.x versions, WLAN Override has been replaced with the "AP Groups" feature;
Creating Access Point Groups
After all access points have joined the controller, you can create up to 150 access point groups and assign up to 16 WLANs to each group. Each access point advertises only the enabled WLANs that belong to its access point group. The access point does not advertise disabled WLANs in its access point group or WLANs that belong to another group.
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/controller/5.2/configuration/guide/c52wlan.html#wp1128591
To learn more about AP Groups check out George's excellent video
http://www.my80211.com/cisco-labs/2009/3/22/cisco-ap-group-nugget.html
Hope this helps!
