802.11n anything to worry about

i was just thinking is the intel core 2 duo able to pick up 802.11n wireless, i was thinking of buying the new AirPort Extreme Base Station.Any help?????

To the best of my knowledge, Apple has not yet released or announced a software update for any of the 802.11n-equipped Macs that will enable "n". It's probably just a matter of time, but if you have a working wireless router now, I'd suggest waiting until such an update is available before you buy a Airport Extreme. That way you can be certain your system can take advantage of it.
Note, of course, that unless you're file sharing with other 802.11n devices on your local network or with wired (Ethernet) devices, having the faster wireless router probably won't do you any good. All wireless routers are faster than the fastest home Internet connection, so an 802.11n wouldn't connect to the Internet any faster, if that's part of your reason for upgrading.
Regards.

  • Is failure to install "N-Mon.kext" anything to worry about?

When I've done the latest update I get the message (appearing twice) that N-Mon.kext can't be installed and I should contact the vendor.
This has happened each time I've updated on two separate bootable partitions I use.
It has not happened on a fresh OSX install on a third partition that had no additional software and where I went straight from 10.6.3 to 10.6.6, only on the ones that had a version of 10.6.6 that was downloaded recently and lots of software.
Is it anything to worry about..? Everything (so far) seems to work ok.

  • Is this anything to worry about?

Using Javascript to apply XSLT when importing XML [using Mac OS 10.6.4, CS5 7.02], and all seems well. But when I "sort" using the XSLT, I get the message "International sorting unavailable on this system - sorting natively. Line: 7, Column: 12".
It seems to work OK, but that looks like an error message. Is it anything to worry about? Is there any easy way of avoiding it?

If it appears to work, then I shouldn't worry too much about it. You can try adding a "lang=" attribute to the xsl:sort command, so the XSLT processor won't worry about what you mean (see http://www.w3schools.com/xsl/el_sort.asp). I think the message is to remind you that there might be a difference between international and 'native' (system?) sorting.
The lang= attribute accepts international language abbrevs such as "en", "de", "fr", "en-GB", and "en-US".

  • Strange crash with shrill noise - anything to worry about?

A few minutes ago I was moving my cursor across the screen and accidentally clicked on the garageband icon in my dock, which I haven't used in over a year. The program goes to load and while it's loading, my computer starts emitting this loud, shrill sound while freezing up. It allowed me to open a few new windows but as I was trying to force quit Garageband (which eventually loaded up), the computer froze. I turned it off and it seems fine now but it was a strange incident...anything I should be worried about now?

    Hi Jiggymike!
    Run Repair Disk.
THESE ARE THE STEPS FOR USING DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR YOUR HD
1.Insert the System Install disk, Mac OS X CD-ROM disk, or Restore DVD disk, then restart the computer while holding the C key. Use the System disk, of the OS, that is currently installed.
2.Once started up from CD or DVD, on the Menubar at the top of the screen, choose Disk Utility from the Installer contextual menu for Panther, or Utilities for Tiger.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
    3.Click the First Aid tab.
4.Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5.Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
6.Click Repair. If DU reports errors it has fixed, re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
7.Repeat steps 5 & 6, but select the Hard Drive this time. It's usually the first listed with the manufacturer's model number. Make note of the S.M.A.R.T. status.
8.When finished, select Quit Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
9.Select Quit Installer from the Installer menu.
10.In the resulting pop-up window, choose restart.
11.After the computer has restarted, you can eject the CD.
You should also run the Apple Hardware Test.
    Post the results.

  • IPod makes clicking noises, but works normally. Anything to worry about?

As i've been using it i've noticed my ipod has been working fine for the longest time, but reciently there are 2 things I notice that happen occasionally.
    1. Once in a while when I plug an ipod into the comptuer it freezes, though this hasn't happened in about a month now.
    2. Sometimes I hear clicking sounds like what you hear a lot on like older mac laptops that usually occurs when the mac has to process a lot (kind of?)anyways reciently I hear that on my ipod but it hasn't before.
So I just wanted to know is there anything I should worry about that could happen in the future or will it likely work just fine?

ive got excatly the same problem, my pod (also had it 3yrs 30gb 5th generation) has started making the clicking noise, i get the apple symbol appear or the sad looking face, im unable to restore it and i think the sad face may mean its a hardware problem from wot ive read on the online support. but i dont know what to do or where to send it to be fixed or if it can be fixed, if you find out how it can be fixed please let me know its doin me head in.

If you see CJK (Chinese/Japanese) characters on the Firefox title bar or the Windows Taskbar then that can happen if Firefox switches to UTF-16 encoding for some reason.
The ''RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin'' extension (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) has been reported to cause that issue.
Be sure not to get confused with the RealPlayer plugin (Tools > Add-ons > Plugins) that plays media files.

  • Is this disk diagnostic anything to worry about?

I'm running a 2011 27" imac. I keep getting this Verify Disk alert on a pretty regular basis. I don't honestly detect any performance issues with the computer. Should I be concerned aboutn this error. I do repair it, but it keeps returning.
Any advice would be welcome. Thanks.

You cannot repair the startup disk from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

  • I'm worried about my PS4 Preorder

I preordered in June, and I played the full 400 dollars. I can't go to the midnight launch and will have to pickup my PS4 after school tomorrow around 3:00. The thing is I think my Best Buy will have sold my PS4 by then. The console is launching in a few hours. And I won't be able to get mine until after school tomorrow. Hopefully they won't accidentally sell mine. Or hopefully they haven't forgotten I preordered. I still haven't got a call or a e-mail. Hopefully all goes well.

    Hello Damar-
I’m sure that you can barely contain yourself today in anticipation of picking up your PlayStation 4 after school.  Hopefully you remember to sleep and eat this weekend as well!
All PS4 pre-orders should be held for 8 days from the date of release and we did receive enough system to cover all of our pre-orders, so I don’t believe you have anything to worry about.  Your system should be waiting for you to pick up and take home today when you get to the store.
    Have fun!

  • About My New Apple Airport Express 802.11n Wi-Fi Router

Yesterday on Saturday after i finshed work I Went out & Bought a New Apple Airport Express 802.11n Wi-Fi Router for My Apple iMac Computer & for My Apple iPhone 5 & Apple TV & I Set it up & everything & everything worked out well so i had a question about it, that Green Solid New Light on Apple Airport Express is it suppose to always stay on even if my Apple iMac Computer is Sleeping like other Wi-Fi Routers??? cause i'm wondering cause it looks Very Nice & White & Shiny & New & i don't really want it to Fail on me cause i do like it & it does not take up a lot of space witch is a good thing so just had to ask???
how many years will My Apple Airport Express Wi-Fi Router will last for since it's as Big an an Apple TV, just was wondering if this thing is really strong & stuff to like hold out for years time maybe???
will My Apple Airport Express Wi-Fi Router Software ever get Outdated like my other Wi-Fi Router??? & they stopped making that Belkin Wireless n Router that i had & they stopped Updating it's Software & then The Software became not usable at all so I Had to go out & buy an Apple Airport Express 802.11n Wi-Fi Router.

    Hi Byron,
on the first question: take a look at your manual; I have a different router, and on it the light stays on all the time, but I don't know if the Airport works the same way. On mine, it simply means that it is on and ready in case you need it. You should worry when there is no light, LOL.
Second question: with electronics, can't tell at all how long they will be good for. They are made to be compatible with a certain range of devices and software - and will be updated for a while when those devices and softwares are updated. After a while, too many new routers are available with too many new features that are compatible with new devices and softwares, so it's not worth updating the old ones. It's a question of money - they don't want to give you free updates forever, they want you to buy a new piece of equipment.
Third: yes, it will at some point. Everything technology/electronics related is outdated - some very quickly: you buy a new one and the next week you see an ad for a "new, improved" one. Same principle: they want you to buy again.

  • Voltage specs and international question about Airport Extreme (802.11n)

I'm about to travel to Korea to teach English for a year so I'm preparing all my electronic gear for the journey and I've come to a curious question involving the Airport Extreme with 802.11n.
First of all, I'm worried about voltage (Korea runs on 220v / 60Hz). For most hard drives (and Apple hardware in general it seems) the power supply is auto-switching 100-240v 50/60 Hz, but when I looked at the official specs for the Airport Extreme (hereafter AEBS) this info is conspicuously absent. The AEBS itself runs on 12V DC power, which is listed in the specs, but the input tolerance for the AC adapter isn't mentioned. I checked the specs for the Time Capsule since the hardware is presumably very similar and it is explicitly 100-240v. Likewise the replacement power supply available from Apple is listed as 100-240v, but since it is a replacement part I'm not sure if it is the exact same make as the adapter that ships with the AEBS in North America. If someone knows the definitive specs, I would appreciate an answer.
Secondly, when I tried searching the Korean Apple site (www.apple.co.kr) for specs on the Korean version of the AEBS to see if it was the same, I discovered that the Airport Extreme isn't available in Korea (although the Airport Express and Time Capsule). Does anyone know why this is? Is it possible the Airport Extreme doesn't comply with Korean wireless standards (I know the iPhone isn't being released in Korea because of laws about middleware that must be installed on cellular phones in Korea)? It seems safe given the availability of the Time Capsule in Korea, but does anyone have any specific knowledge about the Airport Extreme or Wi-fi regulations in Korea?
Sorry if this is a strange question, but I'd appreciate insight from the more experienced/advanced Apple users out there.
    -Matt Tranquada

Thanks for the response. I guess what I would like to know is if I am closer to the newer 802.11n AE base station with my laptop, will it ignore the older base station and communicate directly with the stronger signal, or does it communicate with the weaker, more distant signal. Does the laptop automatically determine which base station has a stronger signal and choose it, or is it fixed which base station the laptop communicates with?

  • Airport Exterme 802.11n Wi-Fi  MC340LL/A not sure about some settings  ?

    Yesterday I bought a Airport Extreme ( Base Station ) 802.11n Wi-Fi MC340LL/A ( Model No. A1354 )
I have managed to figure out most of the setting in the Airport Utility ( Setup Guide that came with the Airport Extreme is No help with details about any settings except the Very Basic ones ) and My wireless network is setup and working but May need tweaking for even better performance.
But there are some settings/choices I'm not familiar with and Not quite sure what options I need and don't need.
My Network - No Network Disk Connected, Guest Network or Files being Shared
( at least not for now )
Connected through wireless access - ( WPA2 Personal Security )
    MacBook 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (13-inch, Late 2009) –
    Model A1342 Polycarbonate Unibody ( MC207LL/A )
    OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.4

HP Photosmart Plus B209a-m Wireless Printer
    Connected Via Ethernet -
    Dell OptiPlex Desktop PC
    Windows XP Professional SP3
First Setting I'm not sure of - Internet Connection - Connection Sharing
For now I have it set to Share Public IP address - Is this correct for my Network Setup with The Airport Extreme being the only router being used ?
Other two choices are Distribute A Range of IP Addresses and ( Off ) Bridge Mode

    Settings I have Enabled

I've read online about Multicast Rate, Use Wide Channels and Use Interference Robustness but still not sure how I should use these setting and at what level.

+For now I have it set to Share Public IP address - Is this correct for my Network Setup with The Airport Extreme being the only router being used ?+
This would be the correct setting if the AirPort Extreme is connected to a simple modem (one ethernet port).
    *Settings I have Enabled*
5 GHz name indicates that you have elected to use the option to assign a separate name to the 5 GHz network. This will allow you to "tell" compatible computers to connect to that network, rather than the slower 2.4 GHz network
Use Wide Channels is recommended for 5 GHz operation.
Interference Robustness often does more harm than good and should not be used unless you know you are in a area with a lot of wireless networks and you feel that your network is experiencing interference issues from a nearby network.

  • Questions about AE Simultaneous 802.11n

I have an AE simultaneous 2.4/5ghz router (firmware 7.5) as well as an Express (FW 7.4.2) extending the network downstairs.
The AE has 2 HDDs plugged in via Hub and the AX has a printer and speakers in it. I understand the HDDs will just be slow on the USB, but they seem to work pretty well - surviving suspends and such gracefully. Same with the printer.
So far things have been running along till the last day or so. Any answers or help would be appreciated:
    1) Just curious, with 2 iphone 3Gs on the network and two Macs, Can the AE connect the iphones at 802.11g while preserving the speed of the 802.11n macs, or does the network all slow to 802.11g speeds (The macs are connectd on 5ghz, the iphones on 2.4 of course)
    2) I turned on one account in the MobileMe "back to my mac" stuff on the AE (not the A Express) and suddenly my network would just drop off randomly and I couldn't see the AE in the Airport utility, or I could see it, the light was green, but I still couldn't connect to the net. In both cases I had to reset/powercycle the AE. Anyone else noticed this kinda behavior related to the MobileMe "back to Mac" login stuff on the AE? Turning it off seems to have stabilized the router.
    3) Anyone seen the MobileMe Backup Utility cause issues with Airports? The Backup hung up last night during its run and caused me to power cycle the router. Just wondering if Backup might have been that issue, or if maybe it was related to #2s issue.

    dead thread.
