802.11N external antenna configuration

Newbie question.
I want to deploy a WAP with an outside antenna to improve my range.  After  a few hours googling and reading,
can I ask some questions.
It seems that I will need an 1250 WAP, which requires 3 antennas to work correctly.
Trawling the Cicso antenna options,  the only 2 that seem relevant are the AIR-ANT1728, which says it is inside/outside,
and the more promising AIR-ANT2506 which is a mast mount option.  Unfortunately, they do not offer an outside mulitple
antenna mounting kit.
So if I have to fabricate something....  what sort of configuration do I use. I have checked out some of the hobbyist
web sites and there are some "spectacular" designs ;-)
Do I have to have all of the antennas in a row ?  Or it does not matter.
Is the spacing between the antennas important ? If so  .. what are the measurements ?
The antennas offered by Cisco have short "pigtails".  So if mounting outside, I will have to use a cable
extension.  How do I waterproof the join ?  One of the installation guides "helpfully" mentions some
coaxial sealant.  Just looks like some sort of "silastic" to me.
Your thoughts. ?
TIA
Peter

New wall-mounted Indoor/Outdoor antennaes are the following:

What we've done is mount the AP and antennae units higher than the cable run.  That way moisture won't go UP the AP or antennae enclosures.  You can also get weather enclosures to protect either the AP or antennae (or both separately).

NOTE:  When you are perusing these links, pay close attention to the horizontal and veritical azimuth.  This will tell you what the signal pattern is like.

  • External Antenna Configuration IOS 12.3

What is the effect if an external antenna is connected, but the radio configuration has the "External Antenna Configuration" disabled?
Is the radio functioning on the internal antenna only, or is the external antenna functioning without a set gain?

It seems like a bug CSCsl17857 C1231 running 12.3(8)JEC unable to set transmit/receive antenna options. C1231 running the IOS image 12.3(8)JEC will not display the options to change antenna to diversity, right or left. The command under dot11radio0 becomes unavailable. On the GUI of the AP only display the options for antenna transmit/receive but on change and apply, you will get the error "page cannot be display".

  • 802.11n: wireless APs configuration limited to 54Mbps

    Hi,
I have been deploying a new wireless network using 5508 WLC (running 7.0.98) and 3502 APs.
I followed the configuration guide found on:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/customer/products/ps6366/products_tech_note09186a0080a3443f.shtml
When I try to chek my access-points, maximum speed supported seems to be 54Mbps.
Testing the same client on a standalone AP configured for 802.11n shows 144 Mbps.
    Any hint?
    TIA

    Solved.
    WMM was not enabled.

  • Airport Express 802.11n - Fixed reading configuration freeze! :)

    Hi,
I have been fighting with my airport express for a day or 2 because every time Airport Utility found it, it hung on reading configuration. I googled, read tons of tips, reset everything millions of times always the same result. It would show up sometimes, but airport utility stuck on reading configuration. Today I fixed it with this,
    1- Open a terminal window
    2- Copy this line
    sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist
3- Paste into your terminal window, press return and enter your admin password when prompted
    4- Try Airport Utility again!!
Please let me know if this helped anyone else, I am so pleased I've got airtunes working at last and I can setup my AX without using a different machine.

Damas&Co., Welcome to the discussion area!
Unfortunately I don't think you are going to get that to work. Most 3rd party devices are NOT compatible with Apple's WDS. No one has ever reported success using WDS between one of Apple's base stations and any 3com device.

  • External antennas and gain settings

    Cisco AIR-AP1242AG-E-K9.
In the web interface, if one goes to:
    Network Interfaces/Radio0-802.11G/Setting tab
half way down the page there's a section called External Antenna Configuration and you can enter an Antenna Gain in the box.
The access point came originally with two small plastic antennas, about 6 inches long but I took these off and connected two external antennas, one is 3db, the other 6db. Should I enter 6db in the box or does the access point set the gain automatically? At the moment all antenna settings are at default.

In the case of a Dish, yes, it would absolutely impact your throughput.
It would be better to put the dish on one port and disable the other port.
The dual ports are for diversity; in an inside environment, having two antennas a small distance apart reduces the effects of "multipath" and "nulls" ... multipath is when there are several images of the same transmission (from multiple reflections), nulls occur when you combine a series of waves (like a primary wave and a near reflection) and the combined waves, added together, result a greatly diminished signal (like a "plus" 35 meeting a "minus" 35 ... the result is a null, or no signal).
For point-to-point, or point-to-multipoint diversity is generally not desired or needed.
The way the antennas are used does not permit efficient operation for coverage of more than one specific area.
    Good Luck
    Scott

  • ¿Tengo wifi 802.11n o 802.11b?

    Gracias

I think I found my answer here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4199
Apple is still beyond this tech!
Routers that support 802.11n should be configured for 802.11a/n mode for maximum speed and compatibility. Routers that only support 802.11a can be left in 802.11a mode. Different Wi-Fi routers support different radio modes, so the exact setting will vary depending on the Wi-Fi router in use. In general, enable support for all modes. Devices will then automatically select the fastest commonly supported mode to communicate. Note that choosing a subset of the available modes will prevent older devices from connecting (for example, 802.11a devices will be unable to connect to a Wi-Fi router in 802.11n-only mode). In addition, choosing a subset of the available modes may cause interference with nearby legacy networks, and may cause nearby legacy devices to interfere with your network.

  • I have an 2tb time capsule 802.11n Wi-Fi base station can I use this as an external hard drive and use a new airport extreme  802.11ac Wi-Fi for my wifi?

I have an 2tb time capsule 802.11n Wi-Fi base station can I use this as an external hard drive and use a new airport extreme  802.11ac Wi-Fi for my wifi?

You can use the 2 TB Time Capsule as a network drive. That means that it must connect to one of the Ethernet LAN <--> ports on the new AirPort Extreme, or connect to the network using wireless.

  • Configuring WDS w/ Airport Extreme Dual-Band 802.11n & Express 802.11g

I currently have an Airport Extreme Dual-Band 802.11n Model: A1301 (located downstairs) and an older Airport Express 802.11g Model: A1084 (located upstairs) which I had been using to stream iTunes to my upstairs stereo (which worked flawlessly). Recently a friend of mine recommended that I reconfigure my network to a Wireless Distribution System setup which would allow me to create a remote wireless node which improves my wireless signal strength upstairs, allows an interface to Airplay to play our music from our iPod's/Pad's and also provides an hard-wired Ethernet connection for my newly delivered Network Extender for my cell phone. So I followed the URL: support.apple.com/kb/HT4262 to assist in this conversion and found that I was unable to configure my network as desired. While this documentation is very good, there is one snafu that I worked out that finally allowed a successful setup. Follow the instructions for:
    - Connecting a WDS main base station to the Internet
    - Configuring a WDS main base station
    - Configuring a WDS remote base station (See last line of instructions for the correct WDS Main ID)
Ensure all Wi-Fi base stations are powered on and allow them time to appear in the AirPort Menu Extra.
From the AirPort Menu Extra, select an 802.11g Wi-Fi base station to configure as a WDS remote.
In AirPort Utility, select the WDS remote Wi-Fi base station in the Base Station Chooser, and click Manual Setup.
Select the AirPort icon from the Toolbar, and click on the Wireless tab.
From Wireless Mode select Participate in a WDS network.
    Click on the WDS tab.
From WDS Mode, select WDS remote.
Enable Allow wireless clients (see the first note below).
If not already supplied, enter the 2.4Ghz AirPort ID of the WDS main, then click Update.
There are two Apple ID's for the dual-band Extreme (2.4 & 5.0Ghz). Be sure to use the 2.4Ghz ID which is listed under the "Summary Tab" of the utility. What is confusing is that in the AirPort Utility, when you position the mouse cursor over the graphic of the Extreme on the left-hand side of the GUI, you are presented with a yellow dialog box which displays the 5Ghz ID and this can be misleading especially when you are trying to connect to an older 2.4Ghz Express ...

My Express is the A1264 802.11n model. My Extreme is the A1354 model.
The most crucial issue is the the Tivo, because the Premiere only works with Ethernet (I dont' have and wont' buy the upgraded wireless doohickey), but of course I would prefer that the Express also act to extend the signal, and I particularly want it do so using WEP access (or nothing, see below), since I have a second Tivo which ONLY works wirelessly and which ONLY works using WEP, not WPA.
Since there were so many different issues and needs going on, I was excited about the Dual Band because it meant I could potentially get 5G speeds for my iPad and perhaps the Tivo Premiere connection, while allowing a completely separate band for the OLD Tivo.
The other option I've been trying out (to accommodate the Tivo2 that can't handle WEP) is having no security, but making the networks hidden.
A third option I tried to make work was to create a "guest network" for just the Tivo2.
But what I'm finding out (it's what I always struggle with...networking is a nightmare.) is that if you take one from Column A, Column B disappears, so to speak.
The way it used to work on the non-dual band Extreme was as I mapped above, and the Tivo2 and my iPad used the wireless signal with no problem while the Express was Ethernet connected to the TivoPremiere, but it did so using WDS, which doesn't even seem to exist as a possibility, forget teh fact that it undermines the speed boost (so I read)
I've frankly never been able to understand the differences between the various modes and structures, and believe it or not I'm very smart and very comfortable with computers and Macs, having worked on them for 25 years.
And one of the biggest reasons I've had such a hard time is because of the many times that I have updated after making changes, Airport Utility tells me it worked, but nothing happens and then after too much frustration I end up unplugging and shutting down every single piece of equipment and rebooting everything and then it DOES work. Sometimes. But I can't be doing that every time I make one tweak, I'll go insane!
And the number of pin-resets I've done on the Express, the Dual band, and even the cable modem would make your head spin!
So there's my story. Kinda. Does it make any sense? At least in terms of my goals?
Your help is more appreciated than you can imagine.

  • Configure standalone 1250 AP to support 802.11n

Been searching this forum about 802.11n setup.  So far, I learned (from this forum) that to support 802.11n, I must use WPA2/AES (or open auth), and I need to ensure WMM is enable.
Q-1.  Besides the above two, are there any other requirement I need to address in my configuration?
Q-2.  Do I have to enable both 2.4Mhz and 5Mhz radio for 802.11n performance?
Q-3.  Is there WPA2/TKIP option?  If so, would this option support 802.11n?  Or, it has to be WPA2/AES?
Q-4.  From the command line, how can I verify if I have WMM enable?
I have read the 1250 AP Configuration guide, but I don't see specific discussion/chapter about 802.11n.  If there is any good reading I can do, please let me know.
    Thanks.

I will try to answer your questions:)
Q-1.  Besides the above two, are there any other requirement I need to address in my configuration?
You need to configure 40mhz channel width in the AP 802.11a radio
Q-2.  Do I have to enable both 2.4Mhz and 5Mhz radio for 802.11n performance?
Only enable 'N' on the 5ghz side due to only having 3 non-overlapping channels on the 2.4ghz
Q-3.  Is there WPA2/TKIP option?  If so, would this option support 802.11n?  Or, it has to be WPA2/AES?
AES is the supported encryption standard for 802.11N.... not TKIP.  WPA2/AES or OPEN is your only option
Q-4.  From the command line, how can I verify if I have WMM enable?
    show wlan
Issue the config wlan wmm {disabled | allowed | required} wlan-id command in order to enable WMM mode

  • Airport Express 802.11n Destroyed my external drive?

Ok.. taking a deep breath. My new 802.11n apple extreme base station could no longer recognize my external drive. (post 10.4.9 install). I am not sure if the new aebs killed it or 10.4.9 or a combination of both.
Note I've had it this drive for about 2 years running, and it's been hooked up to the new router for about 1-2 weeks.
So I connected the external drive directly to my laptop (tried both USB2 and firewire).
I get a dialog box: Disk Insertion
The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.
I went on to disk utility and found this when trying verify/repair:

Has anyone else had this issue. I have my photo library on my powerbook.. but my itunes library is on this 400gb external beast (along with some big home movie projects i have not backed up).
    Please help help help!

No one can be sure of the effect of 10.4.9. And problems are still being worked out with 802.11n compatibility. However, I don't think that it would "destroy" a disk like you've said. You might try a program like Disk Genius to try to repair your external drive. No one would like to think about it - but it may also just have been a coincidence and your drive has failed. At any rate, it sounds like you stand a lot to lose, so you may want to invest in Disk Genius. Trying reviving your disk and then worry about the Airport issues later.

  • Configuring Airptort Extreme for Optimum Speed and security 802.11n

    Hello,
I am running a Airport Extreme 802.11n with a Macbook Pro Core 2Duo, I would like to configure the Airport Extreme to run in the fastest and most secure mode.
Since I plan on only running .N devices I do not need backwards compatibility with other wireless device.
What advanced settings can I make to the Airport in order to achieve the best wireless transfer rates and security (including firewall security)
Thank you so much in advance!
    -Noah

Thanks so much for the response.
In terms of the firewall test I was running it from
my Macbook Pro core duo 2 via Wireless 5ghz 802.11N
Airport Extreme connection, I ran the firewall test
from the grc.com Guards up firewall test (Test all
ports) it showed that my system was not fully
stealthed and responded to pings. I am trying to
figure out how to best secure my network, I currently
have WPA2 with 25character letters and numbers set on
the router, as well as having my MacbookPro firewall
    set to on.
    Any suggestions for this setup?
    Thanks again!
Get an even better 63-character WPA "strong" passcode (Maximum WPA Security is 63 characters/504 bits)). See these sites for generating one:

  • How to check 802.11n antenna support on X61 7673-74G without opening?

    Hi,
Is there any way to check if the laptop got antenna support for 802.11n, without opening/unscrewing the laptop?
Can I in that case install any 802.11n Intel card? (like the 5300 AGN)

    marihole, welcome to the forum,
according to the support site your system has an Intel 4965AGN (n-disabled) wlan card. The "n" cannot be re-enabled.
    Product: ThinkPad X61 7673-74G
    Original description: T7300(2GHz), 1GB RAM, 80GB 5400rpm HD, 12.1in
    1024x768 LCD, Intel X3100, Intel 802.11agn(n-disabled), Bluetooth, Modem, 1Gb
Ethernet, Secure chip, FIngerprint reader, 8c Li-Ion, WinXP Pr
Having then looked at the parts list, the Intel 4965AGN wlan card (without n-disabled), with FRU number 42T0867, will work for you.
    Hope this helps

  • Best way to configure Airport Extreme Gigabit 802.11n

Hi, new to this router stuff. Just bought the Airport Extreme Gigabit 802.11n. Seems to be working much better than my old router furnished by my cable company. Still, wondering how to get the most out of it. So, have a few questions...
    1. How do I know If I'm getting the "n" connection. Don't know if the modem they gave me works with this. Is there a way to see which connection is working? G/B/N?
    2. Channels: I'm on 6 by default. Is it worth trying others to see if one is faster than another? How?
    3. Firewall: I was told the router already has a firewall in it. So, turned off the firewall on my mac 24. If true, do I still need to configure this firewall on the router side? HOw? To what? Don't know the best configuration to use as a rookie.
    4. Any other ideas to tweek this baby to get the most out of it?
Thanks all. I'll defer to the experts now.

Please check out the following Apple Support article for details on the various options available to you with using multiple base stations for extending a wireless network. If you have any questions or need further assistance please don't hesitate to post back.

Note that when installing the AirPort card that there is an internal antenna which needs to be attached to the card or you will have severely degraded range.
