802.11n for PowerMac G5?

Is there a way to get 802.11n capability in a PowerMac G5 tower with external antenna port? I know how to get "g" but would prefer "n."

Not with the external antenna port, but you could use a 802.11n wireless USB adapter instead. One example of this kind of adapter would be the Newer Technology MAX Power 802.11n/g/b Wireless USB 2.0 Stick Adapter & Extension Cradle.

Dual Core Powermac G5 Osx 10.4.9
I have a couple of questions:
    1. Are there any PCI Express cards out to be able to upgrade powermacs to 802.11n?
    2. I am on 512k broadband (max I can get here) and there is a alot of talk about 802.11 being faster.
Bearing in mind my current router is 54g, will it be at all beneficial for me to upgrade to 802.11, or is it a waste of money and a waste of speed as surely I can still only receive 512k!
From what I can see the only benefit of 802.11n is within your house/office between computers....as hardly anyone receives broadband at 24meg let alone 56mg.
    3. I need a new router because the existing one is old, has one attenna, andannoyingly interferes with the cordless phone. (Does anyone know how to stop this?) I'm thinking maybe I'm better off buying a MIMO G Router which have dropped in price.
Can anyone recommend anything to me and help in any way, I appreciate any comments on any of this. Thanks in advance.

Sorry don't know the answer to that one.

That is true. It certainly won't make your Internet any faster than your 512k.

Get rid of that cordless phone and buy one that operates at 5.8 GHz.

Since Apple doesn't support the non-standard use of multiple input/output channels, this isn't really going to be of any benefit.

  • 802.11n For 24" iMac.

I have read that my Intel Core 2 Duo 24" iMac has 802.11n wi-fi support built in but that it will cost me $1.99 (£1.01) to download the software which will enable me to step up from 802.11g.
Where can I find this software in order to download it?

It is avable to download for £1.25 from here http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore.woa/61114042/wo/Xl7rAaWLyyhW2MQh 7OxuC6m56TZ/1.0.21.1.0.8.25.7.11.1.3

  • AirPort Extreme 802.11n for older Macs?

Are there any plans for Apple to release some sort of upgrade for older Macs so that we can use 802.11n wireless networking?
I have a Power Mac G5 (2.5GHz DP) and a MacBook Pro 17" Core Duo (not Core 2 Duo), so the hardware in my Macs doesn't handle the 802.11n specification. (Please note that I'm not talking about the software enabler. That's not going to work on older hardware.)
Are there plans for new AE cards that can be swapped into the G5s or an ExpressCard 34 card for the laptop?
(And why oh why does the UK government not allow wide channel? UK consumers are stuck with only a 2.5x speed increase, whereas US consumers get the full 5x speed increase.)
    Thanks!

802.11n refers to a speedy wireless connection. When
you connect with a wire, you're not using 802.11 at
all. You're using Ethernet, and your Core Duo mac
will connect to the Airport Extreme at 100Mbs (a
little faster than the top speed of 802.11n). Then
The top speed of 802.11n is considerably faster than 100Mbps. In narrow band mode, the Airport Extreme cards are connecting to AE Base Stations (AEBS) at 130Mbs. In wide band mode, 270Mbs. In theory, that makes connecting to the new AEBS device wirelessly faster than via the wired ethernet. It's a design decision that just doesn't make sense in my opinion.

  • 802.11n for MacBook Pro Core Duo's no problem!

    From a post on xlr8yourmac.com:
" So I was really ****** about only having G because of being an early adopter. So I started looking what could I do about it. Browsing the net, I found out that the new core2duo machines actually use a broadcom chip (Actually as mentioned here previously, the Core2Duo MacBook/MacBook Pros use the Atheros AR5008 Chip, although the Mac Pro uses a Broadcom chip (not sure on chip version no.) - the Apple 802.11n enabler supports both. See notes on Mac 802.11n page here.-Mike) and this chip is the same one in Dell Wireless 1500 adapters. (Dell notebook mini card)
I bought one of those Dell 1500 cards on ebay, (I searched google and found the Dell 1500 card for as low as $52.xx, although an ebay auction had over 100 of them at $90 "Buy it Now" price.-Mike) and using the great guides on ifixit, change the card on my machine.
(He didn't mention which CoreDuo Mac he had (Macbook? Macbook Pro? iMac? Mini?) but I'm assuming a Macbook or Macbook Pro since iFixit's guides don' t cover the intel-based Mini or iMac.-Mike)
On boot, the card is recognized (and even more stable than the older one). The enabler didn't want to work (wouldn't install I assume he means) on my system though. So I opened it in pacifist, (available here-Mike) and moved the file to the System folder, and magic! I have draft-N in my macbook coreduo
Hope you can publish this and it helps someone.

Just out of interest, where's the third attenna?
802.11n might work on the chip, but you won't get 11n
    performance without the third attenna.
    Regards
    Paul
Ok, here is the scoop, I installed the AirPort Card from a Mac Pro and it works fine. I do have an issue with my Verizon DSL router Westell 327W. It does not like the new card. So I can not connect to it. On the other hand the AirPort Express and the new Mac Pro card in the MacBook Pro love each other. The range is unbeliveable! I am reluctant to update to the 802.11n enabler right now since reading all the problems with it in the other discussions.
I am going to disable the wireless feature in the Verizon router and hard wire a connection to the AirPort Express and see how that works...
So MacBook Pro (Core Duo) first generation can be updated to take advantage of 802.11n.

  • Can you use airport extreme 802.11n for files backup

Can you use airport extreme 802.11 for files back up and sharing

You can if you connect a hard drive that has been formatted correctly to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme.
Apple does not officially support Time Machine backups for this type of setup, but you could store regular files this way.

  • Airport Express 802.11n for iTunes music?

I am a happy user of an older Express 802.11g for playing iTunes music. Would there by any advantage to getting an N solely for this purpose? I don't use the Express for anything else on my network, and I don't think that the speed increase with N would show any increase in audio quality etc., or am I missing something?
    Mike

    Mike,
Here is some food for thought.
If your printer is OFF, then the rest of the network would be running "n" speed if you replaced the Express with an "n" version.
When you turned your printer back on, the network would basically be running "g" at that time.
I have a "b" wireless printer... Yikes.... Here is what I did.
I plugged my printer into the back of the TC (basically same as the Extreme) with an ethernet cable and turned OFF the wireless printing card.
Now my entire wireless system is "n" including sending information to the printer.
Printing and reading camera cards is much, much quicker...
Just some more ideas for you and a way to spend your money.........

  • 802.11n for my Macbook Mac OS X 10.4.9

    Hi
I have a Macbook with 10.4.9 in it. I am not sure if I will be able to use the 802.11n network. Is there any software upgrade available to get my Macbook to work with 802.11n?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Mothilal

The other 2 posters responded to your question as if you were wanting to join the "N" network as an "N" capable computer. Reading your post, you don't really state that you want to join as an "N" capable computer, just that you want to use the "N" network. You don't say whether the router is an Airport Extreme or not, but the fact remains that most "N" routers are backward compatible with the "B" and "G" and even "A" standards. You don't have to have the update software to join as any of those standards, but MacBooks come with the capability of either A,B and G or A,B,G and N depending on whether you have a Core Duo or Core 2 Duo. The other posters are correct if you are wanting to join the "N" as "N" capable.

  • Will my airport express 802.11d interface with the new 802.11n for music streaming?

I am about tho purchase the new airport express and have the old one running in the house already. The reason for the purchase is to stream music to speakers in the house. The older one is dedicated to the modem and provides wifi, the new ones will be plugged in elsewhere. Should I replace the old one or keep it?

    Welcome back!
If by "older" AirPort Express, you mean it is a "b/g" version, you'll have to use the WDS setup options on both the new AirPort Extreme"n" and the AirPort Express.
Unfortunately, two negative things will occur when you setup WDS:
    1) Because WDS is a "g" technology thing, the entire wireless network will drop down to "g" wireless levels. So, you lose any advantages of "n" speeds with your new router.
    2) The bandwidth on the entire wireless network will be cut 50%.
Bottom line, you will have a "g" wireless network operating at half of it's capability. That's a tremendous loss of performance for a bit more wireless coverage, but you may disagree.
WDS is difficult for most users to set up because it is very easy to make a mistake. Look over this post to get an idea of what is involved with this. There is also a link to Apple's instructions in this post, but the step by step by expert user Tesserax is easier to follow.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2287950&tstart=0
I do not recommend WDS, but it's your call.

  • My wifi network is 802.11n but there are times changing for 802.11g, and have to restart ... after the update for Mountain Lion

My wifi network is 802.11n but there are times changing for 802.11g, and have to restart ... after the update for Mountain Lion...  Help!!!
Several problems with Mountain Lion, APP STORE (login/logout error), WIFI(802.11n for 802.11g), MAIL (horrible)... Apple, what is happening?

Do a factory reset .. nothing will be deleted from your backups and you will be able to get access to them again.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.

  • Imac 17" 1.83ghz - OK, it's incompatible, but how can you use 802.11n???!

The Imac Intel G5 17" 1.83ghz does not work with airport extreme's draft 802.11n, for whatever reason. What are the ways to make it compatible? Currently using it on 802.11g but I do want to use the 802.11n.....
    Any ideas?
    Many thanks.

    The Imac Intel G5...
Intel and G5 are 2 completely different things. You do not have a G5 you have an Intel-based iMac. It either has the "Core Duo" processor or "Core 2 Duo" processor.
You should take a look at some of the USB solutions offered by QuickerTek.

  • 802.11n Extreme + Airport Express on same WDS w/802.11n speed?

I'm traveling now, but when I get home on Monday morning a factory refurb Core2Duo Macbook Pro waiting for me. I've had an Airport Extreme 802.11n for a couple months now and would love to upgrade the network for 802.11n (for faster transfer speeds to the Airdisk I use as the depository for all my music). but I have an Airport Express I want to keep on the same network (in order to stream internet radio to my stereo since that feature was conveniently left out of the Apple TV, though the Express also serves as a bridge for my Xbox 360 & PS3). Is there a way to configure a WDS so I can keep the Express in the loop and enjoy 802.11n speeds? I read the Apple support doc, and it was kinda vague about whether it would work if I followed the model that involves running an Ethernet cable from the Extreme to the Express? I'd hoped the manual would clear things up, but it only left me more confused...

I have a similar issue here, only I'm keeping my snow Airport base station around just in case. I assume the following will work:
    Airport Extreme 802.11n
    -connects via ethernet cable to-
    Airport Snow
    -which connects wirelessly to-
    Airport Express.
The Snow has a spare ethernet out, which can connect to a PS3, Network Area Storage Hard Drive, or a TiVo at 802.11n (or higher, since it's all wired) speeds.
The Airport Express has AirTunes out of the mini jack.
My only question is this: does having the Airport Express connected to the Airport Snow (via 802.11g, I assume) put a drag on the overall 802.11n speeds? Or because the Snow and the Express are only on "bridge" setting, it's a non-issue?

  • Buy 802.11N AirPort Extreme & Use old 802.11g as router to connect  xbox

My son's xbox 360 was connected via an airport express to my wireless LAN which uses the older "dome" 802.11g airport base station. This worked well until the airport express express "burned out". I was going to buy a new airport express 802.11N for $99 but then realized that by buying an airport extreme 802.11N base station (for $179) and using my old 802.11g base station instead of a new airport express 802.11N to connect to the xbox, I would be upgrading my household LAN to 802.11N for only $79 more than the cost of a new airport express.
I am concerned that by using the 802.11g as a router to connect to the xbox I woud be slowing down the whole network thus defeating the purpose of upgrading my current LAN with a new 802.11N extreme base station.
Is there a "right" way to configure the network so as to use my old
802.11g airport extreme as a wireless router (instead of a new airport express) to connect to the xbox without slowing the whole network?
What do people do with their old 802.11g airport extremes when they upgrade to the 802.11N airport extreme base station?

+My question is this: may I toggle the 2004 g extreme on and off -as needed- to extend or use a printer?+
If all of the devices on the network are "n", then you'll be able to make use of Apples new "extend a wireless network" configuration. The wireless will operate at much faster "n" speeds.
If you add a new AirPort Extreme "n" and you want the older "g" Extreme to "extend", you'll still have to use the older WDS setup on all of the routers on the network. This will drop the entire network down to "g" levels and cause a signficant loss of bandwidth as well. In effect, it would be the same as if you had all older "g" routers on your network.
You could configure the older Extreme to "join" the wireless network. It would not provide any additional wireless coverage configured this way, but it would allow the other "n" devices to operate at "n" levels. You could plug a printer into this device assuming that it's compatible with remote printing at the USB port of the Extreme.
I would not recommend turning a network device on and off as this will surely cause connection issues with other network devices, probably sooner rather than later. If you plan to use the older "g" Extreme to provide a print function, plan on leaving it powered on with the rest of the network.

  • Airport Extreme 802.11n and XBox 360 Disonnects

I've been using the Airport Xtreme 802.11n for about a week now and have been frequently disconnected from Xbox live on my xbox 360. The NAT is open and I'm directly connected to the router via an ethernet cable. I've given the 360 a static IP address and have forwarded ports 88 and 3074. The disconnects have happened both while in the middle of a online game and while I'm just on the Dashboard. Does anyone have any suggestions or is anyone else experiencing this. Please Help! It's extremely frustrating!

I have been having this problem as well. It says the server timed out, then my AEBS starts flashing yellow. Sometimes it goes back to green on its own, then other times I have to open up the airport setup. Oddly mine happens the same time every night, give or take 5 minutes.
For more info on my setup: XBOX360 wired to the AEBS, connected to a Motorola modem. At&t DSL is my ISP.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
