802.11n WiFi sharing 3G broadband - sometimes won't connect to the 'net

mostly things work fine but, every now & then, we find one or more of our computers can't connect to the Internet ...
they're interconnected via WiFi and, when this happens, repeated attempts to get things working may or may not be successful - it seems random - even after many many attempts ...
sometimes it's just one that can't, sometimes it's two, sometime's it's the host as well !
iMac 10.6.4 / Mac Book Pro 10.5.8 / MacBook Air 10.5.8 / iPad / and sometimes iPod touch & 2xiPhone 3Gs too ...
usually we host the WiFi from the MacBook Pro, sometimes from the MacBook Air - because doing it from the iMac was never successful after updating it to 10.6.4 ...
but also because our Mobile Broadband 3G Stick won't work with 10.6.4 and at some point in the past we found we needed to have it on the machine that was hosting the WiFi (still true or not, don't know) ...
and, when we set-up a new WiFi network (via System Preferences / Network) on say the MacBook Pro, the message that appears under the Status: On indicator seems randomly to say that we can, or we may-not be able to, or we cannot, connect to the Internet ...
and when we then have the iMac & the MacBook Air join the network, the message they display seems similarly random -
OK, not quite, because if the host can't, they can't, but if the host can, they may or may not ...
when they says may-not, it is indeed the case that sometimes they can & sometimes cannot ...
when the battery dies in the host, or we put it to sleep (to go to bed, dinner, out, whatever) the network goes down, of course, and the chance of having difficulties (as above) when we start-up again seems to get greater ...
we're perhaps unusual, in that we're needing to re-create the network once or twice every day ...
and the problem occurs even when we're careful to turn Airport off (via System Preferences / Network) on the all three computers - MacBook Pro & iMac & the 'Air - before creating anew & having them join in-turn ...
we did buy a Time Capsule, to be able to have a permanent network - but it wouldn't work with 3G mobile broadband (we don't have a land-line), meaning we wasted our money !
I have a suspicion the problem could lie in lags - ie: the nature of WiFi has led the AirPort developers to include code that ensures some persistence in hanging-on to a network, ability to remember WiFi network details, even after they're gone, even when they've been gone for a while ...
so - is there something we're doing wrong, or is there a way we can command things to be, as it were, re-zeroed, so we can start creating a network from a clean sheet ??
any thoughts, please ??

  • Mini Mac suddenly won't connect to the net.

    Hello,
Didn't realise you guys existed until I was pointed in you direction so I'm hoping you might be able to help.
I started this thread http://forums.seloc.org/viewthread.php?tid=71654 on another forum I use. It has all the details of my problem. If there is anything I should be doing it would be great If you could point me in the right direction.
    Thanks in advance
    Karl

Sorry for that, I've cut and pasted the different parts that I wrote.....
I've been running a mini mac for nearly a year now and all's been well up until last friday. I use Tiscali's cheapo broadband package and that has been problem free until the mac suddenly decided that it can't connect last Friday.
It's set up so that it automatically tells you when the adsl modem is connected. You can then check the modem and it is running fine. If I then try and open an internet page it's saying that the internet isn't conected. If I open internet connect and click for it to connect then it just say that it is idle and won't do anything different. When you look at the connection log it says that a pipe is broken?? and that's why it won't connect.
If I look at the system information then it says that ethernet (en1) is enabeld but the cable isn't connected. Tried everything I can think of but it hasn't helped. Contacted apple but they want £35 to try and talk me through the problem. Tried Tiscali but all there suggestions have made no difference.
I'm now using a six year old PC that's taken the best part of a week to get me online, I'm guessing the connection is OK as it's working on this PC but why isn't it working on the mac? Any advice will be genuinely appreciated
Tried unplugging/ re attaching all the cables but it made no difference. I'm using the same modem and cables at the moment with this dodgy old PC so I'm guessing there isn't anything wrong with them.
I do the repair permissions thing so but hasn't seemed to help.
It's a Mini Mac running OS 10.3.9 ( I think ) I use Tiscali via a phone filter and then into a sagem modem (whatever they give you). The modem is connected to the mac via a usb cable.
I've tried a different cable, and the modem is working Ok with this PC. So It's not Tiscali's end.
I've jut spent the last hour messing around with the mac but it's making no difference. The Mac knows that the USB modem is connected but it won't connect to the net. I just tried to use tiscali's DNS number but I can't seem to sort it, I even tried pinging that number but nothing is coming back. It was set up to use ethernet adaptor (en1) and then you just clicked on a little icon in the top bar and it would connect to the net.
Is there any way to wipe all the settings and try to get it going from scratch. Would it work if I bought a router and plugged it straight into the mac without a modem? There is a firewire connection on the back.
If I look back it says something about a broken pipe. On the network set up screen it says that the cable isn't connected to (en1), so I'm guessing that may be why it not getting in contact with the net?
I've now had suggestions to ditch the modem and buy a router?? Is there anything I should looking for in particular?
    Thanks again.

  • My ipod touch is able to connect to other people's wifi just fine, but it won't connect to the wifi at my house, what can I do?

I have tried everything I can think of to fix this, there are a couple ipads, computers, and a gaming system that all connect to the internet. But my ipod just wont let me, some help would be much appreciated.

    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Airport Express 802.11n Wifi firmware

    Hello,
    i have an Airport Express 802.11n Wifi Model-Number: A1264
Somehow Airport Utility cannot update the firmware to 7.x. It is stuck at 6.3.
I tried loading the firmware while holding the option key. But Airport Utility tells me it cannot install the 7.4.2 Firmware on this device.
Also there is no option for "n network in the wireless settings in the utility.
What can i do? Whats wrong with may Airport Express?

I don't have my long list of Apple model numbers handy, but I can confirm that if you bought an AirPort Express(n), you would certainly see a Radio Mode option to include 802.11n when you look at the settings in AirPort Utility.
I believe that the firmware for the 802.11n models started with version 7.3.1. I would guess that the "7" designates the addition of "n" capabilities.
I suspect a mistake was made and the device will need to be exchanged.

  • WRT54G Ver.6 Wireless Router Won't Let My DeskotopOr Laptop Connect To The Net.

I need some help. My laptop gets a great signal, but won't connect to the net, and my desktop shows that I am connected but no internet is being transfered to it from my router. I first did the power cycle thing, then I went in and reset everything back to the default settings on my router and tried to start over, but that didn't help either. The router is only a couple months old, and my desktop works works great when plugged directly to my modem. Any help would be great.

  • I bought the Airport Extreme 802.11n Wifi

I bought the Airport Extreme 802.11n Wifi from the Apple store in West Edmonton Mall Canada got to the airport, customs scanned the box (which was unopened) and they got a dangerous chemicals hit on the unit. No need to say what else happened there after, i was skinned inside out, body search, drill with the 21 questions and on top that they want to know if i have any ties with any terrorist organizations.
Why would this device give off such a reading?

    It doesn't.
The box may have been handled by someone with unclean hands. Or, their security equipment may have been miscalibrated. Or, they're just incompetent. Don't you feel safe?

    Hello Rattisate,
Sorry to hear you are not able to connect to Wi-Fi on your MacBook Pro.  I would be concerned about this too.  You can find information on how to troubleshoot this in the following article:
Troubleshooting Wi-Fi issues in OS X Lion and Mac OS X v10.6
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4628
Follow the steps in the section labeled, "Symptom: My Mac does not connect to the Internet."
Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.

  • We use an Airport Extreme in my office, which works fine for me. Occasionally we need to have more than one computer running on it, but for some reason it won't connect to the internet. It says we have internet, but won't connect to wifi. What's going on?

I use my computer everyday in our office and have no issue connecting to the internet/wifi, but when my boss comes in and tries to connect it doesn't work. It tells her she has internet, but won't connect to the wifi. We've tried a few different tactics(the basic ones I've seen on here), but nothing seems to be working for us. My computer automatically connects to our wifi.
Just recently the Airport Extreme has started with the blinking amber colored light on the front, which I believe means something is wrong? Can anyone help us figure out what's going on and why we can't get my boss' computer to connect as it should?
    Thank you!

    Here's an update:
Now the light is not blinking. It's a solid, consistant green. I don't know if it helps to narrow it down or anything, but I just figured I'd mention it.

  • My wife's titanium powerbook g4 won't connect via ethernet

My wife's g4 titanium powerbook (running 10.5.4) won't connect to the internet in my work apartment via the ethernet cable (only choice). The ip address keeps coming up 169.254.240.149 That usually means that the ethernet card is bad. maybe the driver is just bad. does anyone know how to reinstall the driver for this computer?

This is more about your modem then anything. Sometimes you'll need to unplug and plug back in your modem. Consider it a glitch from the ISP or just the modem in general.
when I need to turn something off then on I try the modem first. This when I'm not doing any ware and tare to the device.

my wifi has an x and won't connect

If it don't take your password, you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and resync the data from the device (or restore from a backup).
If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present.

I have 2 of them that only connected for a day and then reset network settings and they connected again for a day now resetting network settings does not fix it either. My iphone used to work with my home network but after upgrading to the latest OS which is the same versions as the ipods it no longer works either. Acts the same as the ipods. It would seem that the latest tweeks to the OS is the problem with wifi connectivity.
