  • 802.11n on MacBook Pro 2.16?

I've just purchased a Time Capsule for my home network to replace an Airport Extreme base station and have two MacBook Pros (2.16 GHz core duo).
Am I understanding correctly that I can't make these laptops work on 802.11n?
And that if I had gone for the slower 2 GHz models then I could have run the 802.11n updater?
Is there any way of getting these laptops to run Aiport at the quicker speed?
    TIA
    Jamaes

As far as I know, from Core2Duo processors and up, there is an N airport card. Maybe, I am speculating here, Core Duo can't handle n speeds. If you have an Apple Store nearby, ask one of the Genius Bar guys, they will tell you if you can upgrade the airport card to n, but I have a feeling it is more of the Atheros chipset on the logic board.
The Apple techs can explain better this for you, for sure.

  • 802.11N on core2duo pro with Airport Extreme - Is it working???

I have everything set-up (loaded software update, enabled 802.11N) and connected the new Airport Extreme. Not sure if I am working on N mode though. Is there a way on my MacBookPro to find out what kind of Airport connection I have? Also, I have a G4 tower with a non-apple wireless G card that works fine, but it is getting a better connection to my Airport Express than the Airport Extreme (they are in same room for now) - wonder if that is normal?

Yes, it works according to this:
Hardmac.com has post a step-by-step guide on how to upgrading a MacBook Core Duo from 802.11g to 802.11n using an 802.11n card from the Mac Pro desktop. The upgrade was also tested and confirmed to work with the AirPort Extreme 802.11n at 802.11n speed.
There is no reason that a similar upgrade shouldn't also work with the MacBook Pro.

  • 802.11n for MacBook Pro Core Duo's no problem!

    From a post on xlr8yourmac.com:
" So I was really ****** about only having G because of being an early adopter. So I started looking what could I do about it. Browsing the net, I found out that the new core2duo machines actually use a broadcom chip (Actually as mentioned here previously, the Core2Duo MacBook/MacBook Pros use the Atheros AR5008 Chip, although the Mac Pro uses a Broadcom chip (not sure on chip version no.) - the Apple 802.11n enabler supports both. See notes on Mac 802.11n page here.-Mike) and this chip is the same one in Dell Wireless 1500 adapters. (Dell notebook mini card)
I bought one of those Dell 1500 cards on ebay, (I searched google and found the Dell 1500 card for as low as $52.xx, although an ebay auction had over 100 of them at $90 "Buy it Now" price.-Mike) and using the great guides on ifixit, change the card on my machine.
(He didn't mention which CoreDuo Mac he had (Macbook? Macbook Pro? iMac? Mini?) but I'm assuming a Macbook or Macbook Pro since iFixit's guides don' t cover the intel-based Mini or iMac.-Mike)
On boot, the card is recognized (and even more stable than the older one). The enabler didn't want to work (wouldn't install I assume he means) on my system though. So I opened it in pacifist, (available here-Mike) and moved the file to the System folder, and magic! I have draft-N in my macbook coreduo
Hope you can publish this and it helps someone.

Just out of interest, where's the third attenna?
802.11n might work on the chip, but you won't get 11n
    performance without the third attenna.

Ok, here is the scoop, I installed the AirPort Card from a Mac Pro and it works fine. I do have an issue with my Verizon DSL router Westell 327W. It does not like the new card. So I can not connect to it. On the other hand the AirPort Express and the new Mac Pro card in the MacBook Pro love each other. The range is unbeliveable! I am reluctant to update to the 802.11n enabler right now since reading all the problems with it in the other discussions.
I am going to disable the wireless feature in the Verizon router and hard wire a connection to the AirPort Express and see how that works...
So MacBook Pro (Core Duo) first generation can be updated to take advantage of 802.11n.

  • Macbook Pro with Vista does NOT connect to 802.11n

I have a Macbook Pro running Vista and a wifi Linksys WRT350 access point/router, which does 802.11b/g/n. The Macbook Pro only connect to the access point at 802.11g 54Mbps the access point is set to mix-mode. If I set the access point to only 802.11n, the Macbook Pro cannot connect to the access point. If I use bootcamp to load the Mac OS X, the Mac OS X is able to connect to 802.11n. The signal level is pretty good on Vista ad Mac OS X.
    Any ideas?

Usually when connecting a camera only the SD card is mounted, so it is normal to see only the SD card mounted on the Desktop. The camera is not actually the device, rather the SD card (and interface) is. Apparently System Information does report correctly on the camera itself.
Be sure to check at Epson's support site for an updated driver compatible with Lion. You can also download the latest drivers package from Apple: Epson Printer Drivers v2.9 OS X.
Of importance is if the scanner is working. If it is working, then it really doesn't matter, except cosmetically, that the device is reported as a printer. You can report that to Apple via Apple Feedback.

    Hi any concern,

I have followed the other discussions and done the suggested updates or deletes and to no avail.
Unless you tell us exactly what you have tried, we have no way of knowing exactly which updates or deletes? aren't working for you.
Try installing the combo >  Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo
It's ok to do this even though you are already running v10.6.8.
Restart your Mac after the combo is installed, try the App Store.

  • Wireless in XP 108G?

With my MBP running XP the wireless properties show my connection as 108G, I thought the Airport Extreme was limited to 54G? It shows 54G when booted into OS X.
    What's going on here?

The chip used in MBP is the same one that D-Link uses with their 108Mbps products so if you have a 108Mbps D-Link router you are likely to get that speed.
According to my tests of copying files over network, the speeds in Windows & Mac are the same so my theory is that it connects at 108Mbps in Mac as well and for reference file transfers are 2.50-3.10Mb/sec as show in Activity Monitor using D-Link DI-784 802.11a.

Thanks for all the replies to the post...it's nice to know people are willing to help.
How I solved the problem....I took the @$%# thing out... and left it out.  I connect fine with the 10/100.  and better with a Linksys 802.11g PCI adapter.  No problem with that one and it installed on the the first try.
For those looking at the MEGA...I have to say I no problems putting together my 651...and it keeps on running without problems.  The 865 has been a little quirky...esspecially when the MSI software is installed.  My suggestion for those looking a good SFF solution go with the 651...I have seen it in Atlanta for $99 bare.  But if you get any MSI product....the boards are good and for the most part reliable...just STAY AWAY FROM THE SOFTWARE THEY BUNDLE...it will cause you grief
    Thanks again for the replies

  • Airport Snow and Nokia E61

So I am trying to use my Airport Snow with a Nokia E61 with no success. The E61 can see the Airportstation without problem, but as soon as I try to connect to the internet I get a error. I made no security settings on the Airport and it is working because I can use it with my Powerbook. Also I can use the wifi of a neighbor who also has a open wifi so some setting in the Airport is blocking the E61 ... anybody got this working?

Yes you can use the MacBook Pro with the snow (dual Ethernet) AirPort base station (ABS).
The snow ABS is based on 802.11b.
The MacBook Pro has 802.11g built-in.
Since 802.11g is backwards compatible with 802.11b, the MacBook Pro will work with a snow ABS.

  • Help with extremely slow wrt160n.

I setup the linksys wrt160n ver 3 like many other G wifi routers I have used.  What seems to happen is that after power cycling internet surfing works normally for a few minutes and then gets really really slow, some pages don't even load.  What can I do to fix this.
Here is what I have connected:
    - WD TV Live (Wired)
    - Xbox 360 (Wired)
    - Airwave Sprint thing (Wired)
    - Comcast DVR (Wired)
Palm Pre (Wireless - IEEE 802.11b/g)
    iPhone 3gs (Wireless - IEEE 802.11b/g)
    Dell XPS m1530 (Wireless - IEEE 802.11b/g)
Macbook Pro 13.3" 2.53GHz (AirPort Extreme Wi-Fi wireless networking-based on IEEE 802.11n draft specification; IEEE 802.11a/b/g)
Dell Latitude Worklaptop (Wireless - IEEE 802.11b/g)
Planning on getting a N usb adapter for XP HP Desktop

I would suggest you to adjust the wireless settings on the router...Open the linksys setup page and reduce the MTU to 1400 and click on save settings...Under the Wireless tab,Change the Channel Width to 20MHz and Channel to 11 and click on save settings..Under the Wireless tab, click on Advanced Wireless Settings..Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on Save Settings...Under the Security tab...Uncheck the option "Filter Anonymous Internet Request" and click on save settings...
Power cycle the entire network and check the connectivity now....!!!!

  • Diffrence between Airport exspress and airport extreme stations

Hi I was thinking of changing wirless router to an airport extrem staion or a airport exspress staion but I dont understand the diffrence. Please explain to me.

802.11a is fundamentally different to 802.11b/g
There is no compatibility between the two.
Apple have already released a Mac which supports 802.11a, the MacBook Pro, however they have not released an Airport Base Station.
It would not be possible to upgrade an existing Airport base station to 802.11a

  • Wireless Network always closing down

Why is it that I always have to go through diagnostics in preferences to get my wireless network back up and running? It use to remain open for activity all the time.

Are you running Leopard on your systems?
I have my Mac Pro running 10.5.1 and my MacBook Pro running 10.4.11. The desktop suffers from the same issue you are describing. The internet connection just simply times out, or is just plain slow. I ran multiple speed tests to confirm it's my computer. I have cable internet, and the speed tests fluctuate up and down, but well below what I was normally getting.
I've had my AirPort Extreme (802.11n) base station swapped out for a new one, new AirPort card in the desktop, and the issue prevails. I have also erase and installed Leopard, to see if something might have been corrupted.
The funny thing is, if I connect it to my AirPort Express (802.11g only for iPhones) that's hard wired to the AirPort extreme, the internet connection does NOT die out AND the speed tests are normal.
So this leads me to believe that something has changed in Leopard's handling of 802.11n with Mac Pros. This was not happening for me in Tiger when it was still on my system.
Let's hope the next OS update patches things up.

  • How can I make by MB Pro work on 802.11n wireless?

A month ago we bought a new MacBook and in conjunction with that purchase we upgraded from a Linksys 802.11g to the AirPort Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi Wireless Base Station. We wanted to have the 802.11n access for the new MacBook and for our other laptop (mine) - a MacBook Pro 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo 15" purchased in March 2006.
I just figured there would be some downloadable upgrade to take my MacBook Pro from 802.11g to 802.11n ... but that does not appear to be the case. (Boy, do I feel stupid.)
So - the question: What do i need to do to get my MacBook Pro to work fully on the 802.11n standard? Do I need something new physically installed in the laptop? Is there a downloadable upgrade or something on the CD that came with the Airport Extreme unit that I can install? Help!
I really hope I didn't buy a $200 router that I can never fully utilize - there has to be some way to upgrade from a/b/g to a/b/g/n, right?
Thanks to any and all who can provide guidance on this.
MacBook Pro 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   puchased in March 2006

Thanks for the tip on the upgrade. I upgraded to Airport Utility 5.1 (I had 5.0) and then did the firmware upgrade at the link you provided. So, all is installed, and I restarted the MB Pro, but my Network Utility still shows that I have only 802.11 a/b/g capability.
Do I need to take other steps? Do I need to anything like turn my cable modem or Airport Extreme unit on or off or something like that?
I am really frustrated and confused on this. Is it possible that my MB Pro that is all of 15 months old can't upgrade to 802.11n? I know that the new Inel Core 2 Duo MB Pros have the 802.11n built in. My MB Pro is the older Intel Core Duo (not "Core 2 Duo").
    Anyone else have ideas? Thanks!

  • Macbook Pro 15" (late 2013) - Cant get proper 802.11ac WiFi-speed. Mac or router issue?

    Hey
Im from Norway and just bought the 2013 Macbook Pro Retina 15 inch. My router is an Asus RT-AC66U, which should be capable of 1.3 Gbps connection speeds. When i connect my mac to this router on a 5 GHz network with N+AC only mode, i only get a link speed of about 200Mbps, often lower aswell. I was under the impression that you should get the theoretical maximum speed of the 802.11x youre using, as link speed. When i go to "about this mac"-"system report"-WiFi" it clearly says that im connected with 802.11ac. Why do i get such a low transmission rate? Its a problem with bootcamp aswell (Windows 8.1), which leads me to belive that the router mighth be the issue?

It seems that i have found a solution to the problem, but at the same time encountered a new one. The router was the problem. I live in an apartment building with many other students, and there are tons of other WiFi signals from other apartments. The router was in N+AC (there doesnt seem to be an AC only mode as of now?), and the signal strenght was around -40dB (Macbook placed three meters from router with no obstacles in the way). I downloaded a program called inSSIDer for Office and scanned all the network and associated channels and it turned out the router hadn't exactly choosen the optimal channel. When I changed the channel to a less populated one (44), the link-speed suddenly jumped from around 200 to a little over 1000 Mbps. I really didnt know just how sensitive to interferrence WiFi truly is.
The strange thing in windows though is that even though the linkspeed is great (i get much lower link-speeds in Windows, 400-600 (seems to be stuck at 802.11n in windows) compared to 800-1300 in OSX) i max out at 30 Mbps download (speedtest.net), while upload speeds remains unaffected at 94 Mbps (100/100 Mbps subscription). And when I turn on automatic channel selection on the router the link speed goes down to about 200 again (because of the interference issue), but the download speeds go up to 94 Mbps. This is not an issue in OSX, so maybe its an Windows Boradcom driver issue or something?
