802.1x and printers
I want to setup my wireless LAN with WPA and that requires 802.1x authentication. I know how to set it up with a PC but how can I set this up on wireless printers? We have like 20 wireless printers and we are going to be using wireless bar code scanners soon. How will all of this work with 802.1x authentication. We have 1200 AP and the Cisco ACS. Should I set the printers up on another vlan if I cant get them to work with 802.1x authentication?
Please help
Chris
depending on the age of the wireless printer, they may not support any 802.1X supplicants. If they do not support 802.1x, I would do as you suggested and put them on another VLAN and use "ACL MAC Authentication" with your ACS radius server.

I can't access shared drives and printers
My home has been wired with ethernet cables, so there are ethernet jacks in every room. There is one central place where they all the ethernet cables meet to connect to a hub and a cable modem. At this central place I have a D-Link 802.11g router connected to the hub. At the other end of my home I have a Airport Extreme base station connected to an ethernet jack. I have WEP password on the base station.
My problem is that when there is a password on the base station I can't access shared drives and printers. I can only acces them if I am connected with a wire or I connect to the secured (password) D-Link Wifi router that is connected directly to the hub.
What do I need to do to be able to access the shared drives and printers and keep my base station secured?
Thank you.Whether or not you can access devices on your cabled network via the Airport Base Station is not dependent on whether or not wireless security is configured on that base station. Instead, it requires disabling the router built into the Base Station. See the article ABS as a wireless access point

Hello, dear Colleagues.
User with administrators rights cannot change printer properties on "Advanced" tab from "Devices and Printers" on Windows Server 2012 R2.
If to launch "Devices and Printers" on server, all printer properties on "Advanced" tab are inactive (see screen below).
But I can change it manually with "Print Management". Features become active.
The main purpose - to uncheck "Enable advanced printing features" with powershell

Write-host $objPrinter.Name
Write-Host $objPrinter.RawOnly
$objPrinter.RawOnly = "True" # Untick and update the object in WMI
$objPrinter.Put()
It works on Windows 7 workstation, but does not on print server Windows Server 2012 R2 with error

Can you help me with that? Look like somethings with rights.
Thank you.Hello, Alan
Morris.
Thanks for your reply.
I've tried to runs PS Script both locally and remotely, previously running Powershell ISE as Administrator.
I've noticed interesting thing - if to
check "Enable advanced printing features"
manually thru Print Management snap-in, script works fine. But, time to time after some manipulations on print server, this advanced feature returns to enabled state automatically by system, I think. In this case PS Script does not work. Next, if to disable
feature manually again (thru Print Management snap-in),
and enable manually again, PS Script will work. Very strange situation.
Thanks. -
I have a network of 10 computers configured as peer-to-peer work group. I have upgraded one of the ten from Windows XP PRO to Windows 7 PRO. The other nine computers are all running XP PRO. AS near as I can tell they are all configured the same. I have the
same user and same passwords on all computers. One of XP computers is used as a print server. The Windows 7 computer initially was able to access shared files and printers on all XP machines with out requesting a network password.
Suddenly, the Win 7 computer began requesting a network password to access the shared files and printers on the XP print server. It will not accept any of the user names or passwords (all administrators on both machines with identical names and passwords.)
The Win 7 computer has no problem accessing the shared files on the other XP machines. It can even access shared printers in a different work group. Apparently something has changed but I'm at my wits end trying to figure what changed on either the Windows
7 machine or the print server XP machine.
I would appreciate any help. Thank youHi,
Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following:
1.
Disable simple file sharing on the Windows XP computer:
How to disable simple file sharing and how to set
permissions on a shared folder in Windows XP
2.
On the Windows 7 computer, go to “Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings” and ensure that the
following items are turned ON:
Network Discovery
File and printer sharing
And this one is OFF:
Password protected sharing
3.
Temporarily disable or remove all the security software (firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc.) on the computers and check if it works.
In addition,
I would like to share the following with you for your reference:
Troubleshoot file and printer
sharing
Hope this helps. Thanks.

Device and printers long time to open iprint printers
Hi all,
We have some laptops (windows732bit iprint client 5.92/5.94) that go offsite each night and have found that when opening devices and printers, or word etc that check the printers and can take a long time to respond/show the printers. No doubt this is because of the ipp printers installed from iprint, the less amount of network printers the quicker it opens etc.
Is there a way to shorten/eliminate the timeout for checking of network printers at all?
Thanks.Originally Posted by clarja

Hi,
try the latest client there is a fix a "slow issue" not sure if it's the same issue that you have but worth a try:
Fixes introduced in the 5.96 iPrint Client
Print Spooler Crash with WinXP/Win7 and 5.94 iPrint Client. (See TID 7014728)
iPrint client 5.94 slow updating windows printer properties page (Bug 865327)
On these computers, what printer model is installed and what driver + version are they using?

Network printers take long time to show in control panel - devices and printers
G'day,
an annoying effect both on Win 8.1 and Win Server 2012 R2: after installing/connecting a network printer for a user, it takes about 10 minutes (sic!) till printer is shown in devices and printers...
Printer is shown and can be used immediately after connect in word/notepad, but properties of printers can only be managed via devices and printers. Work around for setting standard printer: open notepad, click
print and right-click printer.
But we have to choose a special printer profile, which cannot be done else than devices and printers.
Sometimes even previously installed printers do not show for minutes after logon...
Restarting spooler: no effect
Changing drivers: no effect
Printers are Konica C554 series and 4700P series with Konica PCL drivers.
Print server for network printers in Win Server 2012 R2 (VM on Hyper-V 2012 R2)
No other network issues.
Thanks and regards.
McButtonnOpen the printer folder the spooler team built. It's hidden but available and will list just the printers not the devices.
If the print shows up immediately, the spooler has the information. You will be running the shell command to invoke the old UI.

Enumerating into the Devices and printers UI is then the issue.

I can no longer print to the 3 Canon printers on my local area network. The print dialog box states that the print file is accepted and the job is printing, but the files never print. Everything worked when the computer and printers were initially set up.

I can't help with the scan/print problem. You seem to have done everything I would try.
I don't know if maybe using a registry cleaner would help.

Windows 8.1 Devices and Printers Issues
We have deployed a brand new Active Directory domain for a customer. ALL the servers without exception are Windows 2012 R2 and all clients are Windows 8.1 32bit VDI clients.
The issue that we have is around network printers.
We are deploying 4 printers from a Windows 2012 R2 Server via the print management/Deploy Printer and assigning that to a GPO. The printers are deployed to the Computers which should mean that the users get all 4 printers which they then should be
allowed to set their default and personal settings for that printer.
Our printers are deployed like this:
1. Created security group
2. Assigned VDI computers to the security group
3. Created GPO to reflect security group
4. Modify GPO to do security filtering based on computer group membership
5. Deployed 4 x printers through Print Management to the GPO on a per machine basis
However, on the users Devices and Printers screen we are not seeing the 4 printers. For some users they see duplicates of all 4 printers so e.g they can have upwards of 8 or more. Other users have no printers
displayed whatsoever. The next time they log off or restart they then have a different amount of printers displayed.
If they try and set the default then it will set and the next time they check the default may have moved to another printer even without logging off or back on.
Now, where this gets strange is within an application such as MS Word 2013 or Notepad if they use the file and print menu the printers will be listed, even if the user has no printers displayed in Devices and Printers. If the users selects a printer then
they can then print OK.
If we check HKCU\Printers||Connections then the CORRECT 4 printers are showing as to what is being deployed via the GPO so I know that the Windows 8.1 terminals are receiving the correct printers from the GPO.
To try and correct this over the course of the week we have deployed the printers via Group Policy Preferences to the user and then the PC to no avail. Currently we are using the Print management\Deployed Printers to deploy all 4 printers to the computer
via the Computer GPO.
I believe that this issue is related to the display somehow in Devices and Printers rather than a GPO or print server issue as we can see via the registry the clients are receiving the 4 correct mentioned printers as shown in the registry.
FYI: We only have around 30 users and all users are getting this problem. All users are receiving the same GPO's and have the same few apps installed, Office 2013, Adobe Reader etc.
What we want is for the computers to receive all 4 printers. All users should be able to use all 4 printers but the user should be able to select their particular default, depending where they are located or what they are printing that particular day. Their
particular default should persist after reboot. (We have 2 x Copiers and 2 x HP Laserjets) All users have redirected documents and desktop but the rest of the profile is on the VDI and persists after their reboot. The profile is not roaming as the user is
assigned a particular VDI.
After a week of scratching our heads with this we are open to suggestions and any would be appreciated. We have tried following the issues on this thread to no avail either as they still return.

many thanksHi,
It's strange thing on your client PC. You may ask the GP support engineer to know more.

On my side, I would like you to try following alternative suggestions:
Try Net use command to map the network printer

HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus N911g Devices and Printers Page Is Slow to Open
Hello, I have HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus, model N911g, installed as a wireless printer. I have Windows 7 64-bit. My Devices and Printers page takes over two minutes to open. While I am waiting, if I go to Print Spooler Services and click Restart, the page opens right away. Once the page is open, in the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus device, I ran Troubleshooter and it took about 1/2 hour to finish, and it reported and supposedly fixed a problem in the Print Spooler service. The assigned Port looks like a recovered port. However, if I restart the PC and try to open Devices and Printers again, the delay is still present. I had trouble installing the HP program including the Scan to PC functionality, because response time was so slow. Now it's installed and working, but the HP program is quite slow to open. The spinning circle spins and then stops, almost like it has given up opening the program. Then several minutes later the program opens or the requested action begins.
Check the document I linked below. Step 6 might be the solution you are looking for but it will not hurt to start from the top.

How do I get Adobe reader to be recognized on my Devices and Printers?
How do I get Adobe reader to be recognized on my Devices and Printers?
CutePDFWriter is a third-party application, which Adobe doesn't provide support for. But, I did find the following on their website:
"Requires PS2PDF converter such as Ghostscript (recommended).
You can get the free GPL Ghostscript 8.15."
Here's a link to their website:
CutePDF :: Product :: CutePDF Writer
So, it looks like it creates a PostScript file for you, but then you need additional software to convert the PostScript file to PDF.

B209a not showing up in Win 7 Devices and Printers
After troubleshooting some wireless connectivity issues - basically by uninstalling everything and reinstalling and reconfiguring, everything seems to be working - printing and scanning over wireless, solution center runs fine, etc.
During the setup I named the printer and it displays as the default printer in any print dialog from any application, and is visible to other computers on the network and functional.
But it just doesn't show up under the Devices and Printers control panel! I added the printer here with no problem, but now I have two of them showing up in print dialogs. Does anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it? I'm not too concerned since everything is functioning correctly, but I like to have things in order. Thanks!
Edited to add: after some further investigation, the 'original" printer, along with the one I added under Devices and Printers, is showing up under the Network control panel in the networked printers section - but as UPnP device! This I don't understand at all. Unless it's the card reader portion of the printer that it's seeing?

Cisco Systems vs "CSIRO" 802.11a and 802.11g infringed upon the '069 patent
Hi,
any news about Cisco Systems and the "CSIRO" 802.11a and 802.11g infringed upon the '069 patent ?
http://www.buffalotech.com/products/wireless/
Dear Customer
As you may be aware, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation ("CSIRO") sued Buffalo, Inc. and Buffalo Technology (USA), Inc. ("Buffalo"), for alleged infringement of United States Patent No. 5,487,069 ("the '069 patent"). Subsequently, CSIRO also asserted its patent against the entire wireless LAN industry, including, Microsoft, Intel, Accton, SMC and Netgear.
In it's lawsuit against Buffalo, CSIRO claimed certain Buffalo wireless networking products compliant with IEEE standards 802.11a and 802.11g infringed upon the '069 patent. Buffalo believed at that time and continues to believe that there are no grounds for CSIRO's allegations of infringement. The United States district court, however, found Buffalo to infringe the '069 patent and enjoined the importation and sale of Buffalo's IEEE 802.11a and 802.11g compliant products.
CSIRO's lawsuits are against the entire wireless LAN industry and could affect the supply of wireless LAN products by any manufacturer, not just Buffalo. The entire industry is resisting CSIRO's attempts to enjoin the sale of wireless LAN products. Recently, Microsoft, 3COM Corporation, SMC Networks, Accton Technology Corporation, Intel, Atheros Communications, Belkin International, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Nortel Networks, Nvidia Corporation, Oracle Corporation, SAP AG, Yahoo, Nokia, and the Consumer Electronics Association filed briefs in support of Buffalo's position that injunctive relief is inappropriate in this case.
During the period of time that the injunction is in effect (10/1/2007), Buffalo cannot offer for sale, sell, import, or use its IEEE 802.11a and 802.11g compliant products in the United States. A list of the products covered by the injunction is attached here . The injunction does not prohibit sales of pre-existing inventories of products by Buffalo's customers. In addition, Buffalo has secured CSIRO's agreement to permit the replacement of defective products under warranty. None of Buffalo's other products are currently affected by this injunction.
While Buffalo believes that it will be successful in reversing the district court's decision and will obtain a stay of the injunction pending a decision on the merits, the Court of Appeals has not yet issued a decision. Should the Court of Appeals issue a decision staying the injunction, you will be promptly notified. After the stay is issued or a favorable decision on the merits is obtained, Buffalo will be able to resume the supply of IEEE 802.11a and 802.11g products
Please rest assured that Buffalo continues to stand behind their products and will continue to support all of our loyal customers as it relates to product warranties, technical support and the like without interruption.I suspect after reading the patent and the litigation that you mentioned above, that the US District Court decision will be reversed as the patent appears to be very vague in its contsruction and verbage. Furthermore, the intent to hold the IEEE hostage on the ratification of 802.11n will not bode well in the court's eyes. If in fact the case is reversed, I believe that the members of CSIRO will be in danger of lost profits litigation from Buffalo. Stay tuned to this bat channel.

F4280 wireless printing windows 7 64-bit, not showing printer in "devices and printers"
Hi,
I am a little confused. Today I installed windows 7 64-bit on my acer 9423wsmi notebook. I installed my hp f4280 via a usb cable. It prints and scans. Now I try to install my wireless kit (came with the printer) which worked fine an vista 32-bit sp1. I looked up every driver etc. on hp.com and found the install guide for windows 7. Everything went as described and printing works even without the pc adapter. You might say what is the problem. Well I noticed the wireless (copy) isn't listed under "devices and printers". I found this a bit strange. I tried to install a printer via the windows wizard. But using the network option gives me the shared copy. And using a the usb02 virtual port to which the printer is connect yields the same result: a fully working printer but nowhere to be found in "devices and printers". I searched the internet for a solution but my search results get cluttered with support for the installation.
My questions:
Is this normal on this system with these settings?
Is there a way to let the printer appear in "devices and printers"?
Kind Regards
CarnelainHi Flash,
I still haven't fixed the problem. I assume you found this installation guide. If I follow this I still can't see the printer in "device and printers". But when I open a document (notepad, word) I can see the printer listed in the printer dialog. So I am able to print. Printer properties are a bit hard to reach but it works. I am still hoping some wizz kid from hp to come up with a solution . Keep me posted if you know something more.
