802.1x switches as intermediaries
While viewing the documentation for configuring 802.1x on Cat Series switches; there is a statement to the effect that certain switches (Cat 2940 through Cat 3750) can be used as intermediaries. What does this really mean? Is this the edge switch itself as the intermediary between the client and the authentication server?Does it mean if I am using the Cat 4506, THEN I can use the intermediary switch between the 4506 and the client to "pass-through" the 802.1x request to the 4506? Surely this means that the intermediary switches cannot be used as the edge switch on their own?
I am assuming from the documentation that whatever switch is being used as the edge switch is the intermediary between the client and the authentication server.
Any enlightenment will be appreciated.

Q: Is this the edge switch itself as the intermediary between the client and the authentication server?
A: Yes
Q: Does it mean if I am using the Cat 4506, THEN I can use the intermediary switch between the 4506 and the client to "pass-through" the 802.1x request to the 4506?
A: Not necessarily. You can directly use Cat4500 as intermediary.
Q: Surely this means that the intermediary switches cannot be used as the edge switch on their own?
A: No, you can use them both as edge and intermediary.
For 802.1x, the intermediary devices can be Cat4000 series, Cat3550, Cat2950 or wireless AP. In other words, they are edge devices.
The intermediary here means that the device will act like a proxy or 'middle-man' between the client device requesting for access authentication (802.1x) and the authenication server, for example Cisco ACS server.
Basically, what happened is, the switch will request credential information from the client (i.e username/password), then forward the info to ACS server. ACS Server will check & verify the ID, and will respond with PASS or FAILED response to the switch. The switch, in turn, will grant or deny access to the client, based on the info/response.

For NAC Layer2 + 802.1x, devices that can act as intermediaries are Cat6500 (depend on IOS ver), Cat4500, Cat3750, Cat3560, Cat3550, Cat2960/2970/2955/2950/2940, C7600 series router, Cisco Gigabit Ethernet Switching Module (CGESM) switches.

802.1X Switch IOS version
Hi,
I' have realy big layer two access network made of etherogenius Cisco switch with different IOS version and train.
My customer bought ISE (ADVANCED AND BASE LICENSE).
As far I read on DS it is seem that if you have Minimum IOS release 12.2(52) SE you are able to perform COA, reading DS with more attention I notice that cisco raccomend IOS versione 12.2(55)SE3 why ? does it means COA does not work with 12.2(52)SE ?
But more important :
I need a minimum IOS release to perform 802.1x on my wired network ?Carlo,
Here is the guide that states 12.2(52)SE but the foot note states that for 802.1x authentication you need 12.2(55)SE.
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/ise/1.1/compatibility/ise_sdt.html#wp55038
After checking the release notes this solution falls under the Cisco Trustsec which is supported on 12.2(55)SE, there are several features released in 12.2(55)SE such has vlan assignment in multi-auth mode that makes it much easier for Cisco help generate initial configs for their customers.
Here are the release notes:

AP 802.1X switched port-authentication
Hi,
I've setup EAP authentication (PEAP) to authenticate WLAN client on an AP.
The AP is connected to a switch where the port is not configured for 802.1X.
On this switched port I enabled, in multi-host, 802.1X to authenticate also the AP as a client, but since it's enabled I've not been able to authenticate anymore the WLAN client due to the fact that the port will not transition to Authorized
If I connect on the same port a PC using 802.1X,this is working fine..
Am I missing something to configure on the switch or AP ???
Any suggestion are appreciated
Regards
OmarOmar,
There's a gotcha with this...most likely a trunk issue...
Here is a snippet for EAPOL guidelines:
Authentication Configuration Guidelines
This section provides the guidelines for configuring 802.1x authentication on the switch:
802.1x will work with other protocols, but we recommend that you use RADIUS with a remotely located authentication server.
802.1x is supported only on Ethernet ports.
Software release 7.5(1) supports two in-band management interfaces, sc0 and sc1.
802.1x authentication always uses the sc0 interface as the identifier for the authenticator when communicating with the RADIUS server.
802.1x authentication is not supported with the sc1 interface.
You cannot enable 802.1x on a trunk port until you turn off the trunking feature on that port.
You cannot enable trunking on an 802.1x port.
You cannot enable 802.1x on a dynamic port until you turn off the DVLAN feature on that port.
You cannot enable DVLAN on an 802.1x port.
You cannot enable 802.1x on a channeling port until you turn off the channeling feature on that port. You cannot enable channeling on an 802.1x port.
You cannot enable 802.1x on a switched port analyzer (SPAN) destination port. You cannot configure SPAN destination on an 802.1x port. However, you can configure an 802.1x port as a SPAN source port.
You cannot set the auxiliary VLAN to dot1p or untagged and the auxiliary VLAN should not be equal to the native VLAN on the 802.1x-enabled port.
You cannot enable the multiple-authentication option on an 802.1x-enabled auxiliary VLAN port. Enabling the multiple-host option on an 802.1x-enabled auxiliary VLAN is not recommended.
Do not assign a guest VLAN equal to an auxiliary VLAN because an 802.1x-enabled auxiliary VLAN port will not be put into the guest VLAN if the auxiliary VLAN on the port is the same as the guest VLAN.

Prevent hub on a 802.1x switch port
Hi,
A 802.1x port on a switch will grant a hub access if there is a 802.1x PC connected to the hub.
Non-802.1x pc's can access the 802.1x network if they connect to the hub and spoof the mac-address of the 802.1x PC (switch port uses single-host mode).
Does anyone know how we can prevent this access ?
Thanks,
Gerard van BonVery true. I must have been in wonderland when I half way thought that one through.
I am not sure that dynamic ARP inspection would be helpful in this situation or not. If the ARP tables are built within the switch based upon DHCP snooping, the second host with the same MAC address would have to have a statically entered IP address in order to function. If it tried to obtain one via DHCP, the DHCP server would see that it had issued a specific IP address to that MAC address and would reissue the same IP address to the second host. I guess the second PC could do a NACK to the DHCPOFFER. In this case you could watch you DHCP address allocation for the particular subnet and if you have more addresses issued that you have ports, that could be an indication. Of course there are a few issues with that. Mainly, it would require a fairly static environment to do something like that.
Another problem, and this would be much easier to do from a PC standpoint, would be to setup the 802.1x authenticated PC as a NAT device and connect the second or more devices behind it. (Windows makes this pretty easy now.) If a SOHO router (ie, Linksys type device) were to support 802.1x, it could be plugged in and all devices placed behind it would be able to access the network based upon the NAT functions of the SOHO router. A user smart enough to spoof a MAC address to bypass network security will likely be aware of these methods as well.

Anyconnect 802.1x - "switch user" is blocked in machine authentication
hi all,
I know this is not a bug its a feature
that anyconnect blocks user switching disallowing the computer to have them both logged in. Its desirable and understandable
however
I have an environment where I use only machine authentication and remote helpdesk needs to connect to these machines using some application then they "switch user" to do their tasks (its important not to logoff cause there are some transactions in the background ...)
Is there any chance that the new version of anyconnect will have this feature (maybe its already planned on the roadmap ? )
for machine authentication there should be a checkbox for profile administrator to "allow/disallow users to switch"
or maybe there is already some trick/configuration step that I missed and it can be done?

Switch connected on 802.1x port
Hi All, can any body tell me what happens when a switch/hub is connected to a 802.1x port which is configured for guest vlan if switch does not receive 802.1x request on that port from switch/hub..all the pcs connected to that port will be part of guest vlan or there will not be any connectivity between 802.1x switch & NON 802.1X SWITCH/HUB..
If IEEE 802.1x authentication times out while waiting for an EAPOL message exchange and MAC authentication bypass is enabled, the switch can use the client MAC address for authorization. If the client MAC address is valid and the authorization succeeds, the switch grants the client access to the network. If the client MAC address is invalid and the authorization fails, the switch assigns the client to a guest VLAN that provides limited services if a guest VLAN is configured.

802.1x with dACL - invalid attribute prefix: "ACS"
Dear All,
I've spent half a day traying to solve this without success, I hope you could help me.
I've configured a simple 802.1x solution on a pilot PC that have to authenticate via PEAP-MSCHAPv2 users against my ACS Internal User database.
Switch version:
Model number : WS-C3750V2-48PS-S
Software: c3750-ipbasek9-mz.122-52.SE.bin
ACS:
C1121 with version 5.3.0.40
The problem occurs when the ACS sends within the Authentication-Accept radius packet the following attribute:
cisco-av-pair=ACS:CiscoSecure-Defined-ACL=#ACSACL#-IP-AUTH-4eb90704
At the switch side I see the following debug log:
002558: Nov 8 14:31:35.586: %AUTHMGR-5-START: Starting 'dot1x' for client (0022.680b.da7b) on Interface Fa1/0/1 AuditSessionID AC1FFE4E0000003105BCDE19

The authentication at ACS side is successfully completed but for some reason the switch cannot understand the attribute sent to him by the ACS:
Why the authentication results in 'server-dead' ?
I've hereby attached the authorization profile, the downlodable ACL and the RADIUS authentication detail for the request...
Any idea?
Thanks a lot!Yes, I came across the same issue and ended up as a bug with the 3750
CSCtj28883 dACL attribute parsing failed when 'aaa author' debug turned ON
description is
DACL processing fails when the following debugging parameters are turned on.
1. debug aaa attr
2. debug aaa authorization
The same works fine when they are turned down. Attaching the switch log.
I believe was resolved in version 3750-Build 12.2(55) as from the following note attached to the bug since was found to be unreproducable on later builds
Submitter has confirmed that the bug is not seen on 55SE image.
The issue is only seen in 53SE
can also try and switch debugs off -
802.1x machine auth w/ certificate authority
Two quick questions ...
I am building a lab for 802.1x, I want to use peap w/ mschap v2 and I want to do machine authentication only. I have AD and CA services running on a test windows 2003 server. I have ACS setup, my AD is connected, my switch is configured and now I am stuck on the CA portion and I am not sure if I am doing it right, I can't seem to find documentation that outlines this piece specific to the scenerio I described above, perhaps someone can give me a hand.
I browse to the CA, request a certificate > advanced certificate request > create and submit request to this CA >
From this point I am suppose to select a certificate template. The docs I have found say to use a "webserver" template and select the option to "export keys to file". When I attempt this the export key option is greyed out. I google and some people say only Enterprise edition supports this, I am running Enterprise R2 so I don't see the problem. All of the other templates available allow me to export except for webserver.
1) my question is for the lab scenerio I detailed above what type of certifcate template should I be using? if your answer is a "webserver" template can you perahps tell me why I cannot export to a file?
2) Do my client machines require a certificate to be installed prior to connecting to the 802.1x switch? from what I read using peap mschap v2 coupled with machine authentication you do not require a certificate on each machine. During initial 802.1x authentication the certificate will be pushed from the ACS over to the client. I believe the one caveat is that the client machine will require to be modified to list the new CA or ACS server as a trusted root authority. I need some clarity on this subject, I will not have the option to install a certicate on each machine prior to 802.1x auth. Please confirm
Any help is appreciated, thanks!
If there are any links that someone can provide that have details on this setup please shareI am going through this process currently also, and I can tell you what I have gathered so far.
These notes are applicable to Machine, or Machine & User authentication, Wired and/or Wireless 802.1x.
The certificate must be present on each client machine in order to connect. The thing that I am finding annoying is that when we used the Microsoft IAS Radius, the certificate enrollment was seamless. The domain clients just seemed to "automatically" have the certificate installed on their machines (pushed down by the Domain), that matches the certificate presented by the IAS Radius server during the authentication process (Of course, because it's all within the same domain). Easy as pie, windows magic...
But suppose we want to use Cisco ACS or our own radius server ? Well the first thing I tried was to use a Certificate signed by our internal Linux CA. The Windows domain administrator was not able to set up the Linux CA as a "trusted intermediate", which I don't fully understand. Instead he asked me to purchase a certificate from a Trusted CA such as Verisign or DigiCert. By the way I found a list of Microsoft trusted Intermediates here:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/2592.aspx
The Windows Domain Administrator will do 3 things :
1) Configure Certificate Auto-Enrollment Policy for the Certificate we purchase
2) Configure the Wired & Wireless Autoconfig service settings Group Policy Objects
3) Set the Wired Autoconfig service to start.
I will have to
1) Generate the CSR & Import the puchased signed certificate into the ACS(s).
Now, that said, there must be an easier way to do this! If anyone has notes on whether or not the following is possible, it would be appreciated & interesting:
1) Can the Windows Domain sign my CSR ? If so - how
2) Can the Windows Domain be configured to trust our Linux CA ? If so - how
Good luck to you dot1xers -
SF-302-08P will not power 802.3af/at device
I'm trying to power a Ruckus 7982 Access point using a Small Business SF-302-08P switch. Ruckus claims the AP is 802.3af and 802.3at compatible. The switch reports an overload.
#sh power inline fast 5
Port Powered Device State Status Priority Class
fa5 2 Auto Fault low class0
Time range:
Power limit: 15.400W
Port Status: Port is off - Overload state
Overload Counter: 23
Short Counter: 0
Denied Counter: 0
Absent Counter: 0
Invalid Signature Counter: 0
Here's what Ruckus' description of the PoE behavior of the 7982:
The 7982 advertises itself as a Class 4 PoE device (as do other enterprise class 3-stream APs), which is compatible with 802.3af and 802.3at switches.
802.3af switches re-classify a device with this behavior as 802.3af Class 0 (15.4W), and the vast majority of 802.3at switches classify it as 802.3at Type 1 (15.4W).
This implementation is intentional as it maintains compatibility with both 802.3af and 802.3at switches, and allows the 7982 to support full 802.3at power (>15.4W with a future firmware upgrade to support LLDP, if required).
Seems to me it should work. I updated to 1.3.0.62 - no change.Hello,
I didn't fully finish reading this post but read enough were I feel like this should be able to help you out.
https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/2165089
So pretty much this should work just fine though since the switch can for sure handle 15.4Ws. May be some configurations you need to check our or some changes you may need to make.
Hope that helps you out.
Thanks,

POE from 3524PWR Switch for 1130AG AP?
We have a bunch of 1130AG LWAPP access points that we are installing in various locations. Those locations with newer 802.3af switches such as the 3750's and 3560's power the AP's without issue. However we have mixed results plugging them in to older Cisco POE only 3524PWR Switches.
For the most part if we plug the 1130AG's into the 3524PWR's with short patch cords they power the radios up. However, if we connect them to a longer network line (80 to 100 feet) they disable the radios and WCS alarms tell me that the switch could not supply enough power for the radios.
The Quick Start Guide (page 14) shows the 1130AG supporting both Cisco POE and 802.3af power. Is there any way to get these to reliable power up on 3524PWR switches or do I need to use power cords or power injectors?Hi Jim,
We had this happen to us due to the same PoE problem. The 1130 requires either IEEE 802.3af power **or needs a setting on the WLC for using power injector or Cisco Pre-Standard PoE. Our older switches could only provide Cisco Pre-Standard PoE so we had to tweak the WLC Power setting for these AP's. Once we did that the Radios came right up. Here is a reference;
You may have to enter the following info in the WLC;
While the AP boots, with its Intelligent Power Management feature, it negotiates with the switch via Cisco Discovery Protocol messages in order to provide the necessary power to the AP. Even though the power injector is connected to the AP, the AP that uses this Intelligent Power Management feature gives priority to the Cisco Discovery Protocol information in order to identify whether or not the switch can provide the power. Therefore, after the Cisco Discovery Protocol message shows that the switch does not provide sufficient power (since it is not an inline power capable switch), the AP disables its radios. At this time, the status LED of the AP turns orange and this error message is recorded:
[ERROR] : AP has not enough in-line power
to enable radio slot 1 In order to overcome this problem, issue the
config ap power injector enable installed
command on the controller that is connected with this AP. This command is available from controller version 3.2.116.21. Ensure that you use the correct version in the controller.
This command specifies that a power injector is used in order to supply sufficient power to the AP.
From this doc;

Hope this helps!

LAN Switches cannot be accessed by Telnet, SSH or console in native vlan
Hi to all of you:
I do have a question about tagging the native vlan.
In our network we do have about 90 L2 and L3 switches, 2950 the oldest, 2960, 2960S, 3560 PoE, 3750 and 4503E, and we are running VTP, and 43 vlans within the entire network.
our Native VLAN is still vlan 1, and there are many corporative applications running in this vlan.
We have upgraded the IOS for the switches to the latest IOS version about 6 months ago, and after that we started to have issues on the switches, related to accessing the switch, either by telnet, ssh, or even console. However, the switch is still working fine, I mean, doing all bridging and switching traffic.
I have to reset or reload (power cycle) if I want to access the switch.
I have read that having the native vlan can be a problem.
Could you please let me know if you have gone through this problem?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Javier F. Berthin H.Hi Karhtick:
I guess you have the best answer, you suggested the memory command and I am attaching you as result.
Next step should be to downgrade the IOS?, because we did the upgrade just in order to have the latest IOS published by Cisco.
If you need the config please let me know, for complementary comments.
Thanks for your help.
Javier

Since this shouldn't be an issue with an 802.3af switch, I hesitate to bring it up, but if your controllers are running any of the new code that allows cdp neighbor you may need to turn that off. In the olden days, you could have either the A radio or cdp neighbor but not both. I just got slapped by this recently, when I upgraded to the new code in the controller and discovered I was in a switch in one facility that could not handle everybody all using cdp, the A and b/g radio.
sh inline power
sh power inline
I forget...but one of these should tell you where you are at...
long story short, if you have cdp capability, you should attempt to turn it off and then reboot everything and see what happens. -
AP 1702 Powering options ?
Could AP 1702i be powered by 802.3af POE ?
In the data sheet,802.3af is not included in the powering options, and the power draw of the ap is 15W.
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/wireless/aironet-1700-series/datasheet-c78-732347.html?cachemode=refresh
In the getting started guide, you can use a 802.3af-compliant device to power AP 1702.
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/access_point/1700/quick/guide/ap1700getstart.html
Which one is correct ?
Could we use 802.3af-compliant device to power AP 1702 ?There is a problem in the CDP negotiation between the AP and switch. The AP 1702 (standalone) demand to 16.8 watts ( most of 15.4W that supports PoE ) , which causes the port off and on again to restart the negotiation CDP . Now when you connect the AP directly as is ( in lightweight mode) using a controller to manage it , no problems with CDP negotiations are reported , implying that there are no problems with feeding PoE ( 802.3af )
My question is: If the AP is powered by a 802.3af switch, is the AP fully functional , or lose any functionality? Why demand 16.8 watts ?
The 2702 AP can run on 802.3af (max of 15.4W), but it will downgrade to a 3x3:3 on the 5GHz radio and a 2x2:2 on the 2.4GHz radio. Is any similar the 1702 AP?
Thanks -
WLC 5508 APs showing Line Protocol Down
I have a WLC 5508 (software version 7.5.102.0) and it has 175 APS (mixture of 1131, 1142, 1602, 2602). Recently I've noticed that
about 40 of those APs don't work on the 2.4G Dot11Radio0. sh int dot11 0 shows me:
Dot11Radio0 is up, line protocol is down
Hardware is 802.11N 2.4GHz Radio, address is 1833.9d0c.2180 (bia 1833.9d0c.2180)

I've tried restarting the interface,to no avail, but rebooting the whole AP does bring it back up, but I expect that's a solution to the symptom, not the problem.Hi Sean,
There are certain related bugs of this version. You may need to check whether you are hitting one these. I would suggest staying in 7.4.121.0 code would be a good idea unless you require new features available in 7.5 or 7.6.
