80g iPod Classic freezing during sync

I'm having a very strange problem with my iPod. I tried to sync it yesterday, but itunes said there was a corrupted file on it, and that it needed to be restored. I allowed that, and the restore went through. As itunes began to put my songs back on the ipod, it would freeze within the first hundred songs or so. This keeps happening; the restore works, but the sync freezes it.
I've tried everything. I re-installed itunes on my Mac after deleting every instance of it, I erased the memory on the ipod, I tried putting it into disc mode, I even tried manually putting a few songs at a time on the ipod. All of these result in itunes or the sync process freezing in some way.
Has anyone had any luck with this?

It's possible that your iPod's hard drive has started to fail. Take your iPod and place your right thumb on the centre SELECT button and your left on the top MENU button. Press down both thumbs for about 6 seconds until your iPod reboots. Immediately move your left thumb around to the rewind button |<< on the left and hold this down together with SELECT for a further 6 seconds. Your iPod should now switch into Diagnostic Boot mode. Press MENU for *Manual Test*, then select *IO > HardDrive > HDSMARTData* to reveal your stats. For comparison here are mine for my 2 year old 6th Generation Classic:
Retracts: 889
Reallocs: 12
Pending Sectors: 0
PowerOn Hours: 2202
Start/Stops: 894
Temp: Current 24c
Temp: Min 10c
Temp: Max 50c
Take a note of your results. When finished press *SELECT & MENU* for 6 seconds to reset the iPod again.
With modern disc drives sectors are no longer marked bad by a disc scan, if the SMART firmware detects a sector it has trouble accessing it will attempt to invisibly reallocate it to a spare area of the disc.
Note that I've only 12 remapped sectors and none pending. To help explain what the numbers mean here is an extract from the Wikipedia S.M.A.R.T. article:
*Reallocated Sectors Count*
Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks this sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area). This process is also known as remapping, and "reallocated" sectors are called remaps. This is why, on modern hard disks, "bad blocks" cannot be found while testing the surface – all bad blocks are hidden in reallocated sectors. However, as the number of reallocated sectors increases, the read/write speed tends to decrease. The raw value normally represents a count of the number of bad sectors that have been found and remapped. Thus, the higher the attribute value, the more sectors the drive has had to reallocate.
*Pending sector count*
Number of "unstable" sectors (waiting to be remapped, because of read errors). If an unstable sector is subsequently written or read successfully, this value is decreased and the sector is not remapped. Read errors on a sector will not remap the sector (since it might be readable later); instead, the drive firmware remembers that the sector needs to be remapped, and remaps it the next time it's written.
Large numbers of Reallocs or Pending Sectors would suggest your drive is failing and that you may need to repair or replace your iPod. Check your stats after another attempt to update your iPod. If the numbers increase that again points to hard drive failure. While it won't be good news at least you'll know it isn't some random software problem and you can decide what to do next.

  • Help: iPod classic freezing during sync, can't figure out  if this is an iPod or iTunes issue....

I have a 160gb iPod thats barely a year old, been working fine. Earlier today I was putting some music onto my iTunes when I got a software update for iTunes, 10.6.1. I downloaded the update and installed it and what not. I connected my iPod and noticed that it wasnt synching and iTunes froze. I put my computer on hibernate just to disconnect my iPod. I disconnected it and suddenly all my music vanished. I connect my iPod back and again, it won't synch & iTunes freezes. I uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it, same problems was happening. I tried uninstalling the updated iTunes and installed the last version to see if that would work. Still nothing resolved.
I ended up restoring my iPod somehow so that it connects to iTunes. I thought I figured it out, it was synching with iTunes and I started the process of putting all 7000 songs back, but during the synch it freezes at some point. I categorize my music by artists, alphabetically. The synch freezes exactly once I get to the letter D. So I have about 1100 songs. I'm going to apple tomorrow to see if they know *** is goin on. Anybody have suggestions tho? This is ****** me the **** off.

First off thanks to all the views and no replies, lots of help....... :sarcasm ended::
anyways, I went to the apple store and they told me the hard drive in the iPod was damaged. If you drop it one too many times, work out with it etc, it takes a tole on the iPod. The hard drive couldnt write the files being transferred through the sync.
So basically, I bought a new iPod and I paid about $120 less.

  • ITunes kicking iPod classic out during syncing

Okay -- this is kind of weird, but I thought I'd give it a shot on this board. When I connect my iPod Classic to iTunes it automatically syncs, but then instead of saying it's okay to disconnect it "kicks" the iPod out of iTunes and the Apple logo shows up on the iPod. Then after a few seconds, it will automatically reconnect and then go through the syncing process again. At that point, it will let me eject it.
Is this a problem if this keeps happening? I can live with it, even though it's kind of annoying. Does anyone know why this would happen? I just upgraded by iPod software and wondered it it's a bug in either iTunes or the new iPod software. Will it damage my iPod to have this keep happening?
Thanks for any help you can give me.

I am still having the problem. I have noticed a pattern to the seemingly random freezes.
The iPod is stopping to Sync at almost predictable points during the sync. The first stoppage occurs around the 1.9GB part of the sync. This has not always been the same file but it is always around the same place.
When I sync in small chunks the freeze occurs at almost the same place every time. As soon as it freezes, iTunes is toast and the entire computer needs to be restarted.
Anyways, the freeze happens around every 2GB's of data transferred. It does not have to be in one chunk, it is almost like it is happening on the iPod. Like the iPod is kicking itself out of the sync at certain points along it's hard drive or something. Once it freezes and I restart the computer, I can transfer another 2 GB before it freezes again... then restart, repeat. Finally I was able to load up the 14.8 GB I had in my iTunes. Several hours later... not sure if I should take the iPod back or not. If it is the iPod and that fixes the problem great... but if it is my machine, I get another 3-4 hours syncing and restarting my computer. Wheeee!

  • IPod classic freezes when syncing with iTunes

This is a complicated story involving my two brothers, a traded ipod, and sadness - here goes...
Brother "A" had an iPod, which was traded to brother "B". Brother "A" was on windows, brother "B" was on a mac. The ipod would not sync with the mac, even after being reformatted and restored with latest software of both itunes and ipod. When syncing it gets to song 25 and stops. Every time, no matter the song.
Here is what I have tried:
    • All software updated
    • Ipod was reformatted and restored
    • iTunes library was rebuilt - all unauthorized songs and duplicates removed (my brothers library was a mess)
After all this it still freezes when it is copying song 25. The ipod was working fine (so brother "A" claims) when syncing with the windows machine. Any suggestions?

  • Itunes and ipod freeze during sync

    hello,
firstly, i would like to thank all you kind souls who post to this forum with very helpful suggestions. you have helped me with many past difficulties.
my present issue concerns transferring songs from itunes to my ipod (4th generation). here's the story:
on friday, my ipod started acting funny (skipping songs, etc.). by saturday, it would no longer do anything (folder with !, resetting did not help). this had happened to me before so i did not freak out and figured i just had to restore (that had worked the first time around). however, when i plugged in my ipod to my computer (powerbook g4, just three weeks old), it was not recognised and i was prompted to initialize the disk. i then came to this forum and read pretty much everything related to this kind of problem. countless resets, erases, partitions, etc., later, i was able to get the ipod software back on the ipod. it seemed all normal but there was no music on it (makes sense since i'd restored it). but then...when i plugged in my ipod to sync it with itunes, it would freeze at a given song (not always the same one, sometimes 31 songs into it, sometimes 500). i came back to this forum and read that i should reset my ports, which i did. didn't help, the sync still freezes both the ipod and itunes.
so that's where i'm at: i have the ipod software on the ipod, but i can't sync it with itunes (i.e. i can't get my music onto it). my brother thinks i have bad blocks (or sectors). is this a possibility? the ipod does make some noise (not sure whether it's the infamous clicking...).
    so here are my questions:
    1) is there anything i haven't done yet that could get the ipod to sync with itunes?
assuming i have done everything and the problem is with my ipod's hard disk:
    2) would a program like disk warrior potentially be able to fix the ipod?
    3) would it cost me less to have the ipod serviced than to buy disk warrior?
    4) is there somekind of open-source or freeware disk repair utility that could perhaps repair my ipod's disk?
thanks for reading and i really look forward to any suggestions.
    gen
p.s. the ipod's more than a year old, so no longer under warranty.

Okay, I got it to work tonight...
My U2 iPod would freeze while syncing. I restored and tried to sync and it would freeze on different song #'s. All the while I heard a clicking sound coming from the drive that I never noticed before. It would just click once in a while, not repeatedly.
My fix: (a version of the carpet drop) While the iPod was on and spinning, I held it tight with my right hand, facing me and smacked it's side into the palm of my left hand, simulating the amount of force that it would incurr from a waist-high drop onto carpet.
Now, this force was sheer approximation, being that it would be too time consuming and difficult to calculate this exact amount of force. I mean, my waist may be higher/lower than the original carpet-dropper, and not to mention the plushness of the carpet! Who knows if he did it on Shenandoah Shagg or maybe just some Bermuda Burr Rug?!
By the way, the problem started after being left out in the car on recent cold nights... hmmmm, my iPod thinks me a jerk.
Anyways, here are some previous attempts at fixing my situation (in no particular order):
    1) restored from 5 different iPod updates (2004-11-15, 2005-02-22, 2005-06-26, 2005-09-23, 2005-11-17)
    2) tried to fix with Disk Utility
    3) tried to fix with Tech Tool Pro
    4) tried to fix with Disk Warrior
    5) tried to initialize multiple time (even writing zeroes)
    6) manual sync

  • HT1320 why does my iPod classic freeze up when i plug it in to my computer

why does my iPod classic freeze up when i plug it in to my computer

It's not a "fix," actually.  If that is a 4th gen iPod connected using USB, you need to do what it says and plug it in to the white square power adapter that originally came with those models.  Later Apple power adapters should work; third-party adapters may or may not work.  It has something to do with voltage.  The USB connection to computer does not provide the required voltage (although it's obviously fine for normal syncing and charging).
If that iPod is connected to a FireWire port, it apparently provides the required voltage, because that step does not come up during the Restore.  That model was a transition between iPod connecting to FireWire and connecting to USB.  Earlier models required FireWire.  Later models only used USB.
If you don't have an adapter, and there is an Apple Store nearby, I guess you could take it to the store's Genius Bar.  I'm sure they have a power adapter there, to complete the Restore.  (Just don't let them re-do the Restore on a Mac, if you use a Windows PC. Different storage formatting.)

except for only one but none of the other shows are syncing, Ipod classic will not sync with tv shows except for only one but none of the other shows are syncing. I have them checked but they still wont sync.

Are you getting any error messages during the sync process? If not, reset warnings on the iPod by right->clicking on it from under Devices in the left hand pane of iTunes and selecting Reset Warnings.  Then resync the device.

  • IPod Classic will not sync since installed iTunes 11

iPod Classic will not sync properly since installed new iTunes. Always stops at or around song 2 and just hangs there, even if left all night. Tried restoring the iPod, made no difference. Tried syncing just some songs, sometimes it will do 20 or so but not more than that - and I have 10,000 songs.
Saw something about problem with Winsock and reset that but no effect.
Recently been re-recording CDs in Apple Lossless with 'Convert to AAC' selected for iPod. Maybe the conversion process is causing the block? But it did not before.
I also tried moving the itunes material from the Synology NAS to the PC as I thought the processing power might be the problem. It synced once after that, now it is blocked again. Tonight I tried selecting only the original AAC files and it seems to have worked for them, my problem therefore seems to be the Apple Lossless - unless the syncing of AAC files is another one-off.
Not for the first time I wish I had not updated iTunes because it so often leads to problems of some kind. Why do they not care?
    Any

Update: following successful sync of AAC files, I changed the setting to 'manual' for music & videos, used the View menu to restore the old sidebar, and manually added the Lossless files to the IPod. That actually seems to be working (very slowly). But it would be better if Sync worked as it should.

  • 80G ipod classic, black, having a fit. Keeps turning itself on and off

    Hey people.
I made the mistake of letting my 80G ipod classic run down to a completely empty battery. I think it is the first time in the year since I bought it that I have done this! Anyway, it keeps flicking on and off when I plug it into my macbook. The apple logo appears and then it goes, it appears and then it goes. I've left it plugged in for 2 hours now so it's obviously not taking any charge because its not been recognised by my macbook at all. It doesn't show up in itunes and it doesn't show up in finder.
I can't even do the 5 Rs because it won't stay on long enough so I'm not sure what to do! I think it might be dead but I wondered if anyone had any ideas on how to save it.
It's been treated quite well, I have dropped it once and it ended up in the bath once but that was over 7 months ago and it has shown no ill effects at all so I don't see how that could be the problem now.
Anyway, let me know if you think you can help fix it. I kinda need it right now to help me learn Japanese!

Ooh I just tried plugging it into another laptop and it dd the same thing, but when I took it out it said 'conect to power'. That's the first thing it's done other than display the apple logo for a fraction of a second in a while. I'm just going to leave it plugged into my laptop for days and see what happens.

  • My Ipod classic will not sync any of my music.

My Ipod classic will not sync any of my music, or show up in my itunes library. When it pops up on the computer it views it as a hard drive. I have restored it mutiple times and nothing works. Help please!

    Hello bardwell,
Try rebooting your computer to see if that makes a difference.  Otherwise, use the Get Info window for these games to determine where they should be located on your PC.  Then navigate out to that location to see if they are actually still there.

  • My ipod classic will not sync my content, even after several hours.

My ipod classic will not sync content, even after several hours.  I have restored the ipod, got a new dock connenctor, manually synced a few songs.  This is frustrating.  I am considering sending the ipod for service.  What do I do?

How is your iPod configured to sync TV Shows?  What options do you have enabled from under your iPod's TV Shows configuration tab in iTunes?
No error messsages when you sync your Classic with iTunes?  Try resetting all warnings with the device by right->clicking on it from under Devices in the left hand pane of iTunes and choosing Reset warnings. Then resync your device to see if any errors appears.
