80G iPod Classic has files, but very few actually play

Yesterday my iPod suddenly stopped working. I plays one in maybe 100+ songs. The rest of the time it either skips to the next or sits on one and doesn't move. What is wrong with it?

After playing some more, I've noticed that it is removing the ones I play through correctly... it is also supposed to be removing songs that I skip, though. It sometimes updates. Is this possibly because it's only registering some of my skips?
What does it take for it to register a "skip?" I would have though pushing the skip button when I saw the track title, or heard the first couple notes would count as a skip...

  • IPod Classic has files, but won't play anything on iPod or in iTunes

I have a question about iPod/iTunes file structure.
I have an 80 gb iPod Classic with about 50 gigs of music and video. I'm not sure what I did, but I can't get the iPod to play, or recognize the data in iTunes. When I plug the iPod in, it registers in Windows with the disc name and all folders (showing 50 GB used space), but in iTunes, it just calls it "iPod" (not the iPod name)and it only shows the Summary page, no others with the only option being to restore the iPod. I get the message "iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod 'MY STUFF'. Go to the Summary tab in iPod preferences and click Restore to restore this iPod to factory settings." I don't have the computer with the original music (my dad has it half the country away), so I refuse to restore. All the music and video was purchased through iTunes.
Also, when the iPod is disconnected from the computer (or connected for that matter), it shows that the iPod has 50 GB's of data, but when I select Music or TV Shows for example, nothing shows up. It almost seems empty
I'm thinking I deleted a file or two that iPod/iTunes needs to recognize all the files (the iPod Library file maybe??). I have a hidden folder called iPod_Control on the disk. Can anyone tell me what I need to do? Do I need to copy or create a file or folder? Do I need to move files around? Kind of random, I know, but I don't want to lose literally thousands of dollars in paid music and video!
    THANK YOU!!!

I have the same problem -- my iPod (first-gen nano) says "use iTunes to restore" in several languages, and doesn't do anything. I can see it in disk utililty and in the system profiler USB list. Fine, I think, I'll just load all my music back on after I restore.
Whoops! Apple forgot that if your iPod doesn't show up in iTunes, you can't restore it any more! Even the kbase is out of date, because it tells you (as the final step) to use iTunes to restore the thing on the page about iTunes not recognizing it.
If I reformat in Disk Utility, will my iPod be permanently damaged? Because that's looking like the last thing I'll be able to do, now that Apple has dropped standalone updaters...

You mean that you have put the iPod's Hold switch on, then off, and then press-and-held both the Menu and the Select (centre) buttons together for at least ten seconds.
Have you made sure the iPod is charged?
If you have tried the Restat procedure (above) three times, have you then tried connecting the iPod to your iTunes Library?

  • Ipod classic has been wiped. cannot see it on the 'device list' in my itunes. I have tried restoring to factory settings and reloading...it reloads some of the music, but when I plug the Ipod back in, it wipes it again.

Ipod classic has been wiped saying 'no music'etc.

Make sure your headphones are plugged in all the way, meaning you cannot see any of the silver still showing from the headphone's plug.
A feature of the Nano is to put it to sleep when the display goes out and it does not detect any headphones.

This restarts the iPod, like rebooting a computer.

  • I unplugged my iPod Classic without ejecting it first. It played for many hours after this but then it just stopped working and it has a blackened screen that seems to say paused. Wondering if there is a way to get it to work again.

    Hey hughborg25,
I found an article that can help you troubleshoot when an iPod becomes unresponsive or the screen goes black:
iPhone, iPad or iPod touch: Not responding or does not turn on
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3281
I would go through all the steps listed there, and the issue should be resolved by the end.

My iPod 4G has been going very slow! I want to restart it but my power button is broken. Please help it's been going slow for the past month. It's even slow as o type this message.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
To reset the iPod without the hardware buttons,
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings. All your wifi and bluetooth preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected. You will have to rejoin wifi networks and repair BT devices
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

my ipod classic has been stolen can anybody download my personal photos from it

They can, but the images will only be the small thumbnail files that are created for optimized viewing on the iPod's smaller display.  That is unless you store the images on the iPod in their full resolution.

  • 80G ipod classic, black, having a fit. Keeps turning itself on and off

    Hey people.
I made the mistake of letting my 80G ipod classic run down to a completely empty battery. I think it is the first time in the year since I bought it that I have done this! Anyway, it keeps flicking on and off when I plug it into my macbook. The apple logo appears and then it goes, it appears and then it goes. I've left it plugged in for 2 hours now so it's obviously not taking any charge because its not been recognised by my macbook at all. It doesn't show up in itunes and it doesn't show up in finder.
I can't even do the 5 Rs because it won't stay on long enough so I'm not sure what to do! I think it might be dead but I wondered if anyone had any ideas on how to save it.
It's been treated quite well, I have dropped it once and it ended up in the bath once but that was over 7 months ago and it has shown no ill effects at all so I don't see how that could be the problem now.
Anyway, let me know if you think you can help fix it. I kinda need it right now to help me learn Japanese!

Ooh I just tried plugging it into another laptop and it dd the same thing, but when I took it out it said 'conect to power'. That's the first thing it's done other than display the apple logo for a fraction of a second in a while. I'm just going to leave it plugged into my laptop for days and see what happens.

  • What do I do if my ipod classic has lines at the top righthand corner of the screen that won't go away?

I am not sure when this issue started, but my iPod Classic has lines at the top righthand corner of the screen.  They show up on every screen now.  The iPod is working, but I don't know if this is a sign of bad things to come.  I have dropped the iPod a few times, but not regularly.  I also wasn't sure if this means that it is time to update my iTunes software.  I am going to try updating the software tonight to see if that fixes the problem.  I have tried resetting the iPod, but it doesn't make the lines go away.  I am just curious to see if anyone else has had this issue.  I have attached pictures because it is probably hard to diagnose my issue without seeing it.

It is not a software issue, since you have reset it and update the firmware.
LCD screen do konk out due to high temperature, or when the pixels are static and burn the screen, like the 2 lines, that's the reason we have screen savers or the screen power down, when not in used. Some users do have screen ON all the time when connecting to iPod Docking stations.
Other defects are due to poor SMT, when the display chip is mounted on the iPod motherboard., normally a band of vertical or horizontal white lines across the screen, these appear within 1 year, and Apple do replace the whole iPod.
You can get LCD screen replaced at Apple, if it is still under warranty or get a 3rd party vendor near your area if you want it done cheaper.
    Have a nice day.

  • 80g Ipod classic only holds 16g     What's wrong ?

I have an 80g ipod classic but when I get about 16g of music in it, it locks up and erases everything.
I tried restoring and updating but nothing works.

    Try restarting if that doesn't work then try self diagnosis;
To restart, press and hold the centre button and the menu button that is at the top of the click wheel. Press and hold both of these utill the apple logo appears.
When the iPod has reset it's self try again to get sound.
    To run diagnostics
Follow the restart steps, when you get to the screen with the apple logo press and hold the centre button and the track back button at the left of the click wheel. When a black screen with writing appear let go.
The following screen may look a but scary but scroll down to the audio option and go through the tests to see if it recognises head phones and see if it can produce audio. When finished repeat the restart steps to get back to normal iPod functionality

  • My ipod classic has started making a mewing sound and all it does is scroll through the songs.  It will not play except when connected to my computer.  I tried resyncing and that did not work. How do I fix this problem?

My ipod classic has started making a mewling sound and all it does is scroll through the songs.  It does not play on my Bose sound dock or through earbuds.  It will play when connected to the computer...but that makes it hard to take it on a walk with me   I thought it might be a synching problem so tried that--still doesn't work.  How do I fix this problem with out restoring it to the factory setting?  I do not want to lose all my music content as some of it I cannot replace easily.  Please help with suggestions and advice. Thanks.  Karen in GA

  • My ipod classic comes on but just a blank white screen whats the problem

my ipod classic comes on but just a white blank screen what is the problem

    Gloria,
If none of the 5 R's resolve the issue, it's likely that your iPod's display is damaged and needs replacing of the ribbon cable for the display that connects to the logic board has come loose or is damaged.  Either way your iPod will need to be serviced in order for it to regain full functionality.
    Here are the 5 R's.
