80GB iPod + USB/FireWire Cable

I'm going to be buying a new iPod (80GB model). I currently use my iPod mini with my XBOX 360 but I've run into a problem; my XBOX 360 isn't always on so my iPod isn't always charging via USB.
I have to constantly switch between charging via the FireWire wall charger and using it on my XBOX 360. If I forget to switch it at night my iPod wont be charged for the trip to work the next day.
I'm fairly certain the USB 2.0/FireWire combo cable will allow me to have one dock connected to both my XBOX 360 and my FireWire wall charger, but I've heard a lot of stuff about current generation iPods dumping FireWire compatibility so I thought it would be best to check here before I buy anything.
Will this setup allow my new iPod to continuously charge even while connected via USB to my XBOX 360?
I plan on going overboard when I buy this new iPod so if this wont work I'm welcome to other ideas even if it means spending a heap more on extra cables and adaptors.
Thanks.

What doesn't have a dock connector? The Mini or the cable? I think they both have dock connectors.
That cable is the one that came with the third generation iPod which added USB syncing to the line up but didn't hook up the +5V and GND connections on the dock connector for the USB cable so you could sync with USB but not charge. That Y (or V) cable was meant for Windows users so that could plug in the iPod and then the USB side went to the computer to sync while the Firewire side went to the (included with the iPod back them) Firewire wall charger.
So I think that cable would work with the new 5th generation iPod but the problem may be is the USB power lines in the cable are connected or not (the missing power lines on the 3rd gen iPod was at the iPod's doc connector). If both the USB and Firewire sides of the cable are hooked to the power lines of each type of connection there MIGHT be a conflict if you plug them both in and you are getting both +5V USB power and +12V Firewire power to the iPod at the same time. Likely either one of the connections would work fine by itself though.
It would be nice if someone with that old cable and a new iPod used it to hook their iPod up via just the USB side of the cable and could report back if the iPod charges or not which would verify if the two power lines are present in the cable.

  • Just bought 2 "iPod to Firewire cables" from Apple store...

For my iPod Video 60GB. Am I to assume that even though Apple makes and sells iPod to firewire cables, that they don't work???? What's going on here?

A dock connector to firewire cable will only charge your 5G Video iPod.
You cannot do data transfers with it. You must use the included dock to USB connector. Hopefully you have a newer computer with USB 2.0 My 2 macs are both a few years old and only have USB 1.0 and syncing lots of stuff takes forever.
There will be no firmware update to fix this as they did not install a firewire chipset in the 5G ipod (rumoured to make it smaller)
So I'd return your ipod to firewire cables as you can only charge with them.

  • Ipod with firewire cable

My son was given an older, 1st gen, I think, Ipod that seems to only work with firewire cable. Is there a way to charge this directly on a laptop with USB portsw only? Will a newer cable with USB work on the Ipod (so far using my cabling it doesn't seem to).
I wanted to try to buy a Firewire wall charger (the one he got seems not to be working very well), but I couldn't find any on the Apple website.

If it's a 1st or 2nd gen iPod, it does not have a dock connector; it has a FireWire port (like an external hard drive). So the FireWire cable used with it would have a FireWire connector at both ends.
Will a newer cable with USB work on the Ipod (so far using my cabling it doesn't seem to).
If you are able to try using your USB docking cable, the iPod is probably a 3rd gen. Does it have a touch wheel and four round touch button in a line between the wheel and display? It was the first iPod with the standard dock connector, but unfortunately, the 3rd gen iPod was designed to work with FireWire, so it will not charge over USB.
Apple does not sell the FireWire power adapter these days, but you can find them on eBay. Make sure it is the FireWire type.
If you want to use USB 2.0 to connect and sync the 3rd gen iPod, and you are able to get a FireWire power adapter, you can get this special cable that Apple still sells.

It has both a FireWire connector and a USB connector. You connect the USB connector to your laptop USB port. At the same time, you connect the FireWire connector to the FireWire power adapter to supply power for charging.

  • IPod USB Charging Cable

I've had my IPod Touch since Christmas and I've already gone through 2 USB Charging Cables and it's really starting to annoy me why they keep breaking, I do not know what to do and I do not want to buy another cable, I really need some help here?

I have been using the same Apple Lightning cable for both my iPad 4 and 7G iPod Nano since Nov of 2012 with no problem.
It sounds like you are being rough with the cable. The Apple Cable are covered by a one-year warranty for defects but not abuse.
If you think you have defective Apple cables then make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • Best way to label XLR, TRS, USB, Firewire cables?

    Hi,
My masking tape lables get gummy after a while. I don't know if it's the heat coming through the cables or just the unstable nature of the tape in the first place, but it gets all gummy and nasty after several months.
I would love to hear from those who've discovered a lasting, flexible, neat, cost-efficient and non-gummy approach to labeling their cables.

    I use a brother p-touch and it's great.
One tip that works for me and might work for others is -- don't label cables with their function. At least for me, if I label something "Drum Mic", I guarantee you 2 weeks later that cable's gonna be moved somewhere else, and the label will just confuse me.
So instead I just label my cables with names, like "Franky" and "Johnny", "Zappa", "Norbert", etc. If you're less crazy than me (which is highly likely) you can pick more boring, institutional names like "A3" or "B17". Either way, having names on the cables lets you pick up one end and know which cable it is without permanently tying it to one specific destination or function.
Just a notion. If you never plan to unplug or repatch anything, then obviously you can go ahead and name things more 'permanently'. But where's the fun in that?

  • Brand New 80GB Ipod connects on and off with my usb cable

hi, i just got a new 80gb ipod for xmas, and when i plug the usb cable to my ipod, it connects sometimes, and sometimes doesnt, and when it does, it disconnects sometimes too, i usually have to keep moving into different usb ports and one will work, then not work again, then work again later. i even tried my friends cable and its the same thing, i think somethings wrong with the port in the ipod, can anyone help ?

Turn it off.  If it got wet somehow, you may try drying your ipod off.  The slow method would be a sunny window sill.  You could use a hair dryer on LOW, pointing it at the contacts.  When it drys out, charge itand try a hard-reset. If it still doesn't function properly....  ?

  • Usb vs firewire cable trouble wont load ipod

The cable I rec'd w/my 5g 30 ipod worked only if I jiggled it and occasionally updated it. I purchased a "replacement", which would only charge it. Finally, I contacted support and recently rec'd a replacemnt for the 30/6pin cable...it's a firewire usb and I'm not literate enough (!?) to install this w/o it saying its not supported. If I have the plugs, why cant this replace the other one? I need help, since I have to send the "bad" usb back to Apple asap, and possible the "new" one as well? Did I get the wrong part? I just want to update again!!! If Apple doesn't do firewire usb on the 5th gens, why did they send it to me to replace the broken cable? Soooo confused!

    You purchased the wrong cable.
The 5th Gen iPods do not support syncing via Firewire. You can only charge the iPod via a Firewire cable.
There is no such thing as a 'firewire usb cable', as you specify. Firewire and USB are two different things.
You need a USB-to-Dock Connector Cable. You don't want anything to do with Firewire at all.

Apple probably sent what you asked for. Since you mentioned Firewire... they sent you a Firewire cable. You shouldn't have said anything about Firewire.
This is the cable you need:

  • Possible to charge pb with usb or firewire cable through ipod charger?

    hello,
i forgot to pack my pb charger for my trip. i do have my ipod charger. would it be possible to charge with that by using the firewire to firewire cable or firewire to usb cable? i haven't tried yet for fear of ruining something.
    cheers.
    powerbook g4   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

USB and Firewire - from the Powerbook is one way traffic - ie the PowerBook pumps power out. It doesn't need to take power from a peripheral such as an ipod so it's not set up to do so.
As for "borrrowing" a supply from Apple, you don't know unless you ask. If you're away from home for a month might it be worth getting someone from home to send it to you?
There are local Apple user groups in major cities, so you could page apple users in those cities to see if you can borrrow a power supply.
Or you might have to bite the bulllet and just buy another - either from Apple, ebay or even Criagslist. You might find a slightly cheaper 3rd part adapter somewhere.
Sorry can't help any more. Good luck.

  • Using iPod Classic (80GB) with a Firewire dock

I gave my daughter a new 80GB iPod Classic to replace her 2003 era iPod 15GB, dock connector (with the 4 buttons). Her 12" PowerBook G4 doesn't have USB2, so I was wondering if it is safe to use her old Firewire docking station with the new iPod Classic? I would assume so for two reasons: 1) the dock connector is mechanically the same and 2) I have read that the iPod Classic will still charge from the Firewire power pins. Is this correct? I'd rather she not blow it up right out of the box.

You will be able to use it to charge and output audio through the dock's out port, but that's it. It will not connect to the mac via firewire at all.
An iPod classic can be connected to USB 1.1 but it may or may not sync at all and if it does, it will be painfully, hopelessly slow. You may want to consider syncing the iPod with a different mac... you can use a Firewire hard drive or Target Disk Mode to transfer or copy her library to another machine.
On the upshot, a new aluminum Macbook is expected to hit the market in time for Christmas...

  • Can I use a usb data cable from a classic ipod with my 3rd generation iTouch?

I can't find the usb data cable for my 3rd generation iTouch but I have an old cable from my old ipod classic. It appears to be similar but is it electrically identical for syncing and charging or not?

If it looks the same it should be OK. Some older iPods used Firewire so it the cable has an extra connector (more that the dock connector at one end and a USB connector on the other end) do not use it.

  • IPod USB 2.0 only ( with dock to USB/FW Cable ) question

    Hi
I at last want to buy me an iPod but ...
Since the iPods are USB 2.0 now & my Mac has USB 1.x & FW 400 , you understand for using the iPod as an external & preferred bootable HD I need a FW connection to the Mac ( for data transfer ) & if i read correct this splitter cable only uses the FW for loading the iPods Battery. If so this means i still need to connect via USB for music / data transfer & the bootable HD option ain't there .
I really want to clear this out cause if this info as i just provided it , this will make the iPod less interresting to me & iPod mini doesn't support a camera / mic connection which also makes that less interesting.
At the end if above info is correct i rather wait to buy an iPod together with a new Mac ( do new Mac's with usb 2.0 support bootinf from a usb 2.0 HD ??? )
Please answer this asap cause i need to tell the person what gift i want & god i want to tell him " Just get me that iPod " ( it's in the right pricerange )
    thx

Hello....I just purchased a brand new iPod 20gb color photo last night and I have a couple questions myself, relating to this topic.....
I have a first generation scroll wheel iPod that this is replacing but I still have all the accessories from the first generation iPod....do you know for certain if the charger from way back then will work with the brand new iPod....I know the actual firewire cable is different because of the dock connector but if I purchase one of the new firewire cable w/ dock connector can I use it with the old charger (brick)

  • Using G5 iPod Video with older Firewire cable

I have an older iPod, the 15GB model that used the Firewire cable with the dock connector, but I just purchased a new 60GB iPod Video. It comes with an USB cable and not a firewire one, but I already have the power brick and stuff that uses my Firewire cable. Can I use my older cable with my new iPod Video eventhough it warns me when I plug it in?

You can use the firewire cable to charge the new iPod, but you can't use it to sync content onto your new iPod.
The power brick with firewire cable will charge the new iPod without any problems at all.

  • Firewire cable vs usb

what is the difference with the look and function of the the firewire cable. I am assuming i have the usb. I cannot reformat or restore with my computer, however when i took it back to the shop they were able to do do it, but as soon as i plugged it into my computer again it showed the exclamation mark and folder. Its back in the shop now but im not sure if i will have to get a fire wire cable and completely not sure what it is. does it plug into to usb or somewhere else??

Well, using Firewire sometimes really makes a difference. There are a number of people here who solved their iPod problems by switching to a Firewire connection. See these:

  • Firewire Cable vs USB Cable?

Can someone explain what's the difference between a Firewire cable and a USB cable? Is one better than the other? I have a Firewire port at the back of my Mac so I thought I could use it for the iPod Dock using a Firewire cable. Also are then different kinds of Firewire cables?
    Thanks

For the differences in the specifications (yes, there are several types of FireWire connector), you may wish to do a quick search of your favorite search engine. You will find many articles at various levels of technical detail. One will, I am sure, be appropriate.
There was a time when all available iPods were FireWire based and could not even use USB. But as a relatively small percentage of PC users have one, keeping the iPod FW only would have hindered its availability to mac users and PC users savvy enough to install a card in their PC. Now, all current iPod models are USB only.
