80gb Seagata SATA VERY slow reading (ST380013AS)

Hello,
before I will return my drive i'd like to know if someone had the same problem before:
A few weeks ago I set up my brandnew system.
I used two ST380013AS for RAID0 Configuration - everything was fine.
But after a few days, XP got slower, a few days later, it got even slower...
I reinstalled a few times with and without RAID0 and found out, that ONE of both disks i very, very slow when reading from it.
AIDA32 Disk benchmark tells me a read performance of 1.5mb/s of this drive - normal is about 55Mb/s - write performance was still at 55mb/s
It seems like it does many pauses during read accesses.
I tried different cables, swapped the drive connectors, used the slow drive on the other sata controller (ich5 instead of promise)
Still the same problem.
SeaTools diagnostic software did not find any S.M.A.R.T. error, drive selftest ist 100% ok (but it's slow, even from this dos diskette - so it's NOT my Windows XP!)
I wonder if this maybe is an incompatibility between the drive electronics and the mainboard/bus. But it's strange, that it got slower and slower...
And the other drive (same model!) just works without any problems.
Any idea what could be the cause for this?

vango, you are right, we have the same setup. NEO fis2r board with two ST380013AS.
I was happy with it when both drives were working - unfortunately I don't remember the performance of my RAID0 setup I used.
Now I'm running a single drive and performance is still good ( I'm happy with 55mb/s linear read )
What's a little bit strange is the fact that both drives run at UDMA5 - no matter which controller I use..
But I remember seeing UDMA6 when using RAID0 with the latest Promise drivers from http://www.msi.com.tw - but I'm not sure.
But the latest Promise drivers for non-raid mode is from january 2002 - so it's really outdated.
For a single drive it shouln't make any noticable difference.
And for AIDA32... it's really one of the best system tools I've ever seen.. it displays even temperature, voltages, memory timing, .... I love it
The integrated database with all these values you cannot read out from the hardware and you had to look up yourself is very good! Even with vendor links!
Well, I think I'll get an RMA number from Seagate and exchange the drive.
Maybe I'll be running RAID1 afterwards as I'm sick of reinstalling XP with all the drivers, patches, and so on. (I can mirror the old system drive without losing data)

    1) Yes, being slow either on reads or on writes is a quite common situation for storage spaces. See references (with some of the solutions I hope):

  • Very slow reads from Mirrored drives

    Hi all -
I'm running a Tiger G5 Xserve with mirrored 80Gig SATA drives as the primary HD, and a standalone 250Gig SATA drive in the third bay. At the end of each workday, SuperDuper does a smart update from the mirrored drive to the standalone drive as a backup, and it takes about 40 minutes to run through 40Gigs of data.
I also backup via SuperDuper directly from the mirrored drive to an external 2.5" 80Gig firewire drive once a day for offsite backup, and that takes 40 minutes.
That means I'm getting nearly identical performance to an onboard SATA 3.5" and an external Firewire 400 2.5" - strongly suggesting that it's something in the RAID mirror, rather than in the interface or SATA channel of the receiving drive.
Last week, for some reason, I selected the standalone drive as the source for the backup, and it took 8 minutes. After a bit testing, it seems clear that doing the same backup takes roughly 5x longer when the source is the mirrored drive. The server load is quite light at backup time - under 20% before the backup, under 50% during the backup, even though smart update has a LOT of files to sift.
My understanding is that mirrors are often slower to write than other configurations, as they have to sync, but this is almost entirely a reading transaction, and I've never seen anything about mirrors being so slow to read relative to a standalone.
It this normal? an artifact of the software RAID? Something misconfigured?
It's not a huge problem for me, but since I run this procedure twice a day, it'd sure be nice to have it be one that I come back to in 10 minutes, instead of an hour.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Dean Larue-
This may all be logical, but I would double-check the SuperDuper settings just to make sure that you aren't doing different backup types.
The two 80GB are doing a lot of other stuff whilst you are backing them up and the 250GB just had to read and push files.
I would also imagine that the 2X80GB drives are fuller percentage-wise than the 250GB drive as this too would impact performance.
As it has no files to compare while backing up, SuperDuper is often faster doing the initial backup. Comparing the files on the source drive to the many files on the backup drive takes time.
    Luck-

  • AirDisk vs. Networked drive very slow

    hi everyone,
have been searching and browsing the forum around this topic but couldn't find a real answer or fix to my "problem" yet.
i'm just really curious about why an external drive hooked up to the airport extreme is about 10 times slower than a harddrive shared from another mac using wifi through the same base station.
    setup is as follows:
LaCie BigDisk Extreme shared through a G4 Cube (love) > Ethernet Hub > Airport Extreme (Gigabit Ethernet) versus WD MyBook Premium II > USB 2.0 > Airport Extreme (Gigabit Ethernet)
i'm accessing both from a macbook (black one, latest model) and a macbook pro (latest model) - and transferring a file from the disk hooked up to the cube is about 10 times faster than the same file (or any other comparable in size) copied from the drive hooked up to the airport extreme basestation.
it does not make ANY difference at all if i set the basestation to any of the 4 options you find in the wireless radio mode options (802.11n 2.4/5GHz - b/g compatible), so i'm really curious if this is just a firmware issue (7.2.1) that will get fixed further down the road or if i'm doing something really stupid, or... if this is a half-baked feature never to be living up to the promise made?
    anyone? any ideas?
    thanks,
    norbert

A Western Digital My Book Live. I've spent two days trading emails with a very nice person from the company who has asked me to try various fixes and nothing has worked. They are perplexed as to a solution and I'm close to pulling the plug on this endeavor.
I have an imac connected to a switch with the my book live and the imac connected to the switch. Switch connected to the wall ethernet jack that connects to the time capsule/airport device. The time capsule is connected to the verizon fios router/modem. I have the verizon wireless signal turned off. Everything else in the house has connected and has been working fine for a year. This network hard drive takes forever to access and is very slow.

  • Very slow external sata HD (lion)

    Hi everybody!
It has been a while I am using a Netstor external HD (NR710C) 4x2TB WD Caviar black, RAID 10 (4TB total space, 2.71 Available, MacOS Extended Journaled).
It is conntected with the MacPro (MacPro 4,1 - early 2009) via a Sonnet Tempo SATA E2P pci card (drivers updated)
The OS installed is Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50d) on a OCZ SSD 250GB
What happen is that randomly the access  to the external RAID HD is very slow and while finder try to open subfolder the entire system freeze for a minute or so. Soemtimes the opened folders looks empty and I have to wait a minute or so to see the content.
When I used Snow Leopard (installed on a 1TB HD) the access was always fluid and fast.
What I've done to try to solve this issue is:
Unchecked the "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible) in the Energy Saver panel.
Changed slot of the PCI card
    Changed sata plug and cable
Performed all the check disk possible
It happens as well that the copy/move of big folder (up to 800GB) is not always as fas as it should be.
Also, working with Lightroom (cache is on the SSD hd) is really frustrating due the slow access to all the files.
I was used to work directly on the external sata HD but now seems like if I have to move everything back on an internal HD.
Is there any other check I can perform to address this issue?
    So many thanks.
    Luca

  • Seagate GoFlex Thunderbolt Adaptor is very slow on new MBP

I have new mbp 13" md101 and Seagate GoFlex Thunderbolt Adaptor + seagate go flex 1TB, and speed is only 16mb/s tested with black magic and 13GB files copy. I did software update too, but the result is same, Whats wrong with this new MBP ?

Just in case someone else comes across this… The reason you're seeing slow speeds with a thunderbolt adapter is that you have formatted your disk with NTFS. Macintosh computers cannot recognize this format natively but you can use NTFS for Mac  (http://www.paragon-software.com) which will allow you to use the disc with both platforms. I did this and found no benefits whatsoever.  It is MUCH better to dedicate a USB 2 or USB 3 external drive for windows use only.  I formatted a 1.5 TB drive with NTFS then  installed the NTFS for Mac software.  The drive worked fine HOWEVER, when you do a search with the Mac  to find a file or something it cannot search the NTFS drive.  So basically, anything you place on the NTFS drive from your Macintosh you will be unable to find when searching.  That's a big deal!  The other limitation I found was using the drive on my new Seagate thunderbolt adapter.  Unless you're booted natively in to Windows on your Macintosh, Windows cannot see the drive.  Secondly and very important of course, it's very very slow.  It took forever to copy  the information I had stored on the drive  to other drives… Reformat and use the drive as a Mac external.  The data transfer is ridiculously slow and reformatting the drive from NTFS back to Mac OS extended journaled also took a very long time.
To summarize, formatting a drive with NTFS so that you can use it for both Windows and Mac sounds like a great idea but in reality it's not so great unless you're okay with slow speeds and the inability to search the drive with the Mac.

  • Since upgrading to ios8, pages very slow to load, and can no longer read items in my reading list when offline. ?????

SI since upgrading to ios8, Safari pages are very slow to load, Kindle crashes upon opening, and I can no longer read saved artices from my reading list when offline. Big disappointment. Is it possible to downgrade to previous ios?

I actually managed to fix it! But unfortunately I don't know what I was that I did that helped.
Anyways, this is kind of what I did.
    1. I tried to reset form bakup via iTunes, no change.
    2. I tried to reset as a new iPhone, problem still there and reading list also as bookmarks!? (several hundred)
    3. Noticed that I could delete a bookmark, once in a while, the other times I got the 'Bookmarks are being synced. Please edit the bookmarks once syncing has completed.' message.
    4. Because I figured that it was a memory problem, I thought it made sense to delete as many as possible, witch I did.
    5. Noticed that it was more likely that I coould delete a bookmark if I restarted Safari.
    6. Notice that it was even more likely that I could delete a bookmark if I turned the Safari sync with iCould off (with option detete information on iPhone) and then back on again.
    7. When I was about half way through deleting the bookmark list I suddenly discovered that all but one of the items in my reading list was 'waiting' and one was downloading. I kind of was 'unstuck' now.
    8. I started to delete items in my reading list, but every other time I got the 'Bookmarks are being synced. Please edit the bookmarks once syncing has completed.' message.
    9. It took a while to delete all bookmarks and items in the reading list.
Hope you guys could use the info here to fix your problems too!

    wen6275,
It looks like you're actually using a camera or phone to take a photo of your monitor.
That's not what is commonly known as a "screen shot".
It looks like you're on a Mac.  Hitting Command+Shift+3 places a capture of the contents of your entire monitor on your Desktop; hitting Command+Shift+4 will give you a cross-hairs cursor for you to select just the portion you want to capture.
I'm mentioning this because I fear I'm not construing your original post correctly when you type "I am working with a large files [sic], currently it has 149 layers, all of which are high resolution photographs", so I'm wondering if there's some similar use of your own idiosyncratic nomenclature in your description of your troublesome file.
Perhaps I'm just having a major senior moment myself, but I'm utterly unable to imagine such a file.  Would you mind elaborating?

  • In Adobe Reader (11.0) the typing is very slow when I insert sticky notes.

I bought a new laptop and I just installed the latest version of Adobe Reader.
When I insert sticky notes, typing is very slow. This doesn't happen with the
other program. I've uninstalled and reinstalled. I still have the same problem.

This phenomenon can happen with PDF files that have errors in them.  Adobe Reader or Acrobat may be able to fix these errors, but if you close the application, it will ask to save the corrected file.  If you save it once, that should no longer occur when you open it again.
This is just one explanation, but it doesn't explain why that happens with every PDF you have.
Test: does it also happen with a PDF that is not supposed to contain any errors: http://helpx.adobe.com/pdf/adobe_reader_reference.pdf ?

  • Adobe Reader 11.0.2 Very very slow

    Hi all,
Since I have updated to Adobre reader 11 (11.0.2 or 11.0.3), I have some issues on some computers.
i have 40 computers with the same configuration (Win 7 x64)
For 20 of them, It is very slow to open a document (about 6-7 secondes to open Adobe reader)
the the other 20, no issue (1 second max, to open Adobe)
I have noticed that disabling "protected mode" permits to avoid the issue, but I dont want to disable this important security feature.
Why some of the machines works well and the others do not work well ?
Does that performance issue is a known issue by Adoebe ?
Do you have any link to any Adobe release note dealing with that ?
Do you have a way to fix that issue  without redusing security ?
Thank you every body for your help

    Hi Pat,
reader_sl.exe is not in the startup list.
Disabling protected mode is a very high security break that i dont want.
Any other idea ? Thank you

  • G5 Dual - DVD Reader has gone very very slow after Leopard

After 1 Migrate install and 1 clean install, I notice that reinstalling apps is taking 4/5 times as long as they should it's as if my DVD Reader has gone very very slow. I thought at first it was the migration that had caused FCPS2 to reinstall slow.
(Sony DVD RW AW-G170A 4 months old) on G5 Dual 2's)
FCPS2 wanted 19-hrs to install, I waited 6 hrs and then gave up. Luckily or unluckily as the case may be I used the time install Leo on my other Macs.

Both are WPA/WPA2 Personal security. And both the routers were upgraded to 7.4.2 firmware this morning with the hope that it will help.
    *N Devices (both working fine):*
    Apple TV 40GB
2009 Model Mac Mini upgraded to Snow Leopard - working perfectly.
    *G Devices:*
    Thinkpad running WinXP
    Dell Laptop running WinXP
    Acer Netbook running WinXP
    iPod Touch
    iPhone 3G
    Linksys webcam
_All of the above are working fine_.
+2008 model Mac mini -+ upgrade to Snow Leopard shows extremely slow wifi connection that it is unusable. It takes 20min to load apple homepage. When I boot from the clone of my Leopard lying on my external drive, it works perfectly.
I compared the settings between all the tabs of Network-->Airport-->Advanced and they are identical between Snow Leopard and Leopard mode except that SL doesn't have the "Apple Talk" tab.
Appreciate any help to debug this.
