830 vs. 930 vs. 1020 Please help me make a decisio...

Hi everyone. I am trying to make a buying decision between these 3 devices. Maybe you can help me out. Here are the guidelines of what I consider important (they are in order of importance):
BATTERY - a) It's very important to me that the battery is long lasting. I don't want to be one of those people that are continuously recharging their smartphones in the office. I want a battery that with a moderate use of the device, it lasts from early in the morning until late at night and still have a small reserve for any urgent call.
b) When I started looking for smartphones, it was very important to me that it had a removable battery. The reason is that I am not of those people that buy a new phone every year. I've had phones that I made them last 3 years. I know that only the 830 complies with this feature. Later, someone told me "of all the cellphones with removable battery you've had in your life, to how many of them did you replace the battery?". Answer is "never". Should I care whether the battery is removable or not? Is the lifetime of an internal battery longer than the one from a removable one?
CAMERA - a) I am not a professional photographer. I don't even have a DSLR camera (Canon, Nikon, etc.), that's why I would like to have a smartphone with a good camera that could more or less substitute a DSLR and that I can use when I do trips or go on vacation.
b) Between the 830 and the 930, despite the megapixels amount, which one takes better photos? (low light, colours, pics with more "life", etc.)
SOUND RECORDING - I am a big fan of music (and a musician as well) and I know that the 3 models can record concerts without any distortion. I don't think I care whether it records 5.1 surround or not. Is there any improvement in sound recording in the 830/930 compared to the 1020?
GPS - I would like to have a good GPS experience for driving in my car. Do the 3 devices work equally fluid?
INTERNET - I would like to have a fluid navigation.
Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi there!
I had a 1020 and now I have a 830, so I can comment on those two a little. My experiences of the 1020 were really good until I broke it. In terms of battery life it was fine. Not spectacular, but it would get me through the day nicely. It was speedy enough, usually, and the camera quality was obviously nice. I never filmed that much, so I can't comment much on that, but I dare say you can find YouTube video samples.
I've only had the 830 for a couple of days, but so far so good. The camera seems nice enough, though not as good as the 1020. I haven't had much chance to experiment in daytime yet, but night time seems ok. Night time photos are quite reminiscent of my 920 in its early days - bright and bluish photos, something firmware updates have changed on the 920. I actually am having a great time with Living Images. As sad as I must be, this may well have made the update worthwhile for me! The battery is pretty good. It hasn't been a heavy day, but I'm still on 50% at 6pm. As for replacing the battery, the reason I'm getting rid of my 920 is battery life, so I would say it's maybe worth it. Maybe. Performance is fine, roughly on a par with the 920/1020, which is what I was expecting. GPS seems fine, same as the 920/1020, as expected.
Overall, when I broke my 1020 I could have got another one or the 930 and I chose the 830 because it was thinner and lighter, more modern, so (I hope) more future-proof, and it had Glance. Now I've spent some time with it I don't regret my choice, but you'll have to see what you need!
Hope this helps.

    Hi,
Welcome to the forum! You'll find that there are many qualified people (such as Tubby) willing to help you. Will you do what you can to help them? In order to simplify the query you posted, someone will first have to understand what it does, what the tables that it uses are like, and what tools you have to work with (that is, what version of Oracle, and any other software you are using). To actually test their ideas, people will need versions of your tables.
Many people, if they spent enough time, might be able to figure out roughly what you are doing, make some tables themselves and test a solution. You can help with all of that. I assume you already know what the appliction is, and what this particular query is supposed to do: you don't have to figure out any of that, you just have to say it. You know what all your tables are, what the datatypes of all the columns are, and what kinds of data are in the tables: you don't have to guess at any of that.
Describe what you're doing. Think about it: how do we know that
    SELECT  NULL
FROM    dual;doesn't do what you want?
Post CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements for a little sample data.
Post the results that this query is supposed to produce from those results. (Is it producing the right output now? Then it should be easy to post the correct results.)
Describe, as well as you can, how the present query is doing it.
Format your existing code, so it's easy to see what the different branches of the UNION are, and what the main clauses are in each one.
When posting formatted text (code or results) type these 6 characters
\(all small letters, inside curly brackets) before and after each formatted section, to keep this site from compressing the spaces.
Say what versions of Oracle (e.g. 10.2.0.3.0) and any other relevant software you are using.
I know it's a lot of work, but it really helps. You can do it as well (probably better) than anyone else, and if you're unwilling to do it, why should anyone else be willing?

  • Please help me make a choice--lenovo thinkpad versus other lenovos?

    Hi everyone,
Just joined and this is my first post here.
I live in India. I can get a non Thinkpad
Lenovo for 23,000 rupees [around $400]. The dealer didn’t tell me which model it was but it's dual core, 3rd generation, 2GB RAM, 320GB HDD, 15inch screen, battery that lasts 3hrs.
PLUS a lifetime FREE subscription to Eset smart security six antivirus for as long as I'm in this particular state in India. If I move to another state or move to the US, as I hope to do in a couple of years, I will have to pay something.
I don’t need a large HDD, so that's fine. I need the laptop only for word processing and the internet. No gaming or programming or photoshop, so I don’t need high configurations like i5 and i7, which are prohibitively expensive in India.
OR I can get a second-hand Lenovo Thinkpad that is nearly 2 years old for about the same price. These are the specs according to the ad:
    Lenovo ThinkPad L420 Laptop / Intel Core i3 / 14.1" Display / 2GB RAM / 320GB HD
    Processor Speed:2.10 GHz
    Model:ThinkPad L420RAM:2 GB
    Operating System:Windows Home 7
    HDD:320 GBScreen
    Size:14.1"
    Colour:Black
    Processor:Intel Core i3 (3rd Generation) i3-2310M
    Warranty:No Warranty
Bought this laptop in Jan 2012. In perfect working condition. 14.1 TFT, DVD dual layer writeable, wi-fi, great touchpad, and all others in a perfect working condition. Excellent battery -- lasts for 7 hours with movie playing / gaming.
That was the ad. The advertiser told me that though he installed Windows he has always worked in Linux and therefore has not had any virus problem. Naturally we worry that any old laptop will have viruses.
He did offer to format and reinstall everything. He also said he can offer me a licensed copy of win 8 and Word for free.
I'm wondering which of the above I should buy. Can you please help me decide by answering my questions:
    1. I'm a writer; I write on the computer all day long. I need something that will work well if used 12 to 14 hours a day. Would the new laptop give much better service than the 2 year old one even if the older one is a thinkpad?
    2. does a thinkpad on average last more years than any ordinary laptop, or any other lenovo laptop? I can't afford to buy a new machine every couple of years. I want something that will last at least 5 to 7 years. My old desktop lasted 9 years, and I used it all day long.
If the thinkpad lasts longer than other laptops, then it might have as many years in it left as a new laptop, even if it has lost two years of its life already.
    3. the advertiser says the battery lasts for 7 hours. Someone told me that after a couple of years, all batteries last half as long as they used to. Does this mean the used thinkpad's battery is now not likely to last 7 hours as the advertiser claims?
But even if it lasts 4 or 5 hours, that would still be better than the mere 3 hours the  new laptop will run on battery.
If I buy a new battery for the thinkpad, will it last 7 hours or do all laptops lose the ability to run long on batteries over the years?
    4. will a new dual core, 3rd generation processor be faster or slower than a two year old i3 3rd generation processor?
    5. The advertiser said the reason the price was high was that Lenovo thinkpad was unbreakable. You could throw it out of a moving car and it would survive. Now I have no intention of throwing it out of a moving car, but accidents happen and it would be nice to know nothing would happen to it if I accidentally dropped it while carrying it from place to place.
So is it true the thinkpad will survive falls while ordinary lenovos won't?
I'm sorry this post is so long. Thanks so much to anyone who can answer even some of my questions.

    Hi, welcome to the forum!
First of all, you should ask the exact model and specifications of the new Lenovo from the dealer. You cannot compare models unless you know exactly the specifications. Second, you don't mention the price for the used L420, so we cannot give you definite answers. I will try to give you some guidelines, sorry if I'm not more specific.
In general terms, a Thinkpad is more robust than normal laptops. The L420 has a spill resistant keyboard, metal hinges for the screen and a very good construction with good plastics. If you accidentally drop it, chances are it will not be easily damaged, but it all depends on how it falls, on what surface, at what angle, open or closed etc. etc. Dropping it from a running car would probably destroy it, as it would any other laptop. It is more resistant but not invulnerable, so it all depends on the specific conditions (or your luck!). I have Thinkpads 8 years old and they are still working perfectly. I have an L520 and i expect it to last easily that much under normal conditions. But, as with all machines, you never know, it could develop a problem and die tomorrow. The chance is slim, but it is there and it could happen. Again, it depends on your luck.
On the other hand, I have helped friends buy new laptops and I have tested the Lenovo Essentials series (B590). They are very plain, well constucted, quiet and extra cool and they are cheap. For simple everyday use I would expect them to last as long as a Thinkpad, given the proper care of course. I wouldn't hesitate buying one of them.
Now for the battery of the L420. If it is the normal 6 cells battery chances are that 7 hours are out of the question. Only with a well preserved 9 cells battery this number is possible, so ask the seller for the battery type.
The laptop does not loose its capability of keeping the battery alive and a new battery will last according to its specs, whatever the age of the laptop. So you can always buy a new battery for an old laptop and there will be no problem.
For typical applications like word processing and internet use, all modern dual core processors from intel are more than enough. Again, a comparison is impossible because you don't have the specs of the new Lenovo but there is really no difference for the use you have in mind. I would suggest you add another 2GB of ram though - to both laptops - to ensure a smoother operation. It would cost around $30.
Another aspect you do not mention is the screen size and resolution. A 15.6'' standard HD (1366 X 768) is ok but maybe the 14.1'' with the same resolution will not be enough for writing all day. Ask the Thinkpad seller about the resolution of the screen, it would be nice if it is a 1600 X 900.
All in all, for the same price I would prefer the Thinkpad because it is a better laptop. There are also the Thinkvantage tools (software only for Thinkpads) that add more value to the package, especially the Power Manager. But if it costs more than $500, it becomes less attractive. For $600 I would not even consider it.
Of course this is just my opinion, based on the facts you gave. Try to get more details, wait for other opinions. In the end, you can't go wrong either way!

  • A Cornucopia of CSR Problems! (Please help to make it right!)

Thanks in advance for the help you can provide - there's a few issues that I can't seem to get answers to and need some expert CSR intervention from here (You guys already give great customer service on here!): So this was the first time its happened, but I had 2 of the $5 certificates I had earned from purchases expire. I was holding out on them to apply to the Wave4 Amiibo preorders which just went up but during the order I saw that they were no longer there? Is there any way to get credit back for those certs or to apply them against an existing order so as not to lose the benefit? Also, one of the orders I put through I used my currently active credit card, however due to a pre-emptive bank notice of a retailer breach, they are expiring my card before the ship-date on the order, is there a way for me to change the credit card# at a later date (prior to shipping) without a CSR accidentally cancelling my order or me losing the items? Lastly, I had pre-ordered Witcher3 CE from BB when it was first available in-store, at that time there were no additional promotions as there are now for the bonus "steelbook". I don't want them to accidentally delete my pre-order (which they seem to often do), but feel I should still qualify for the bonus steelbook (even if it doesn't show up on my receipt), what can be done about this? Thanks again, I look forward to your prompt and professional response!

    Hello KnightOfTruth,
Thank you for your kind words about our customer service and we appreciate your support.
If your certificates have expired, we won't be able to redistribute them to a previous order or reallocate them to your account.  I'm truly sorry for this.
You can contact us at 888-BestBuy (237-8289) to change the credit card associated with your order.  This shouldn't change your pre-order status.   Also, pre-orders should be an authorization on your card, but not charged until the order has been processed.
Finally, our Gaming teams are aware of The Witcher SteelBook concerns and if you don't receive the bonus item, please send me a private message by clicking the blue box at the end of my signature.  I'll be happy to further investigate.
I hope this post answers your questions and thank you again for reaching out.

  • Please help me make my photo look normal

Hi I have quite a few pictures like this one. For some reason they are darker than normal, and the colours are less bright. - I think its to do with how the light was on the lens when I took them. I want to do something to them in Photoshop Elements to make them look normal. I have tried altering the levels slider (by pulling the far right slider to the left a bit) but it makes the clouds disappear, and although it makes the picture lighter it doesn't look right still
here is the pic - you can see my face looks dark and the colours aren't good in general - it was actually quite a bright day.
    http://i468.photobucket.com/albums/rr45/RimShot69/SNV83039bb.jpg
I appreciate any help. Thank you
    Rich

    Rich,
There are various ways to improve this picture. One can spend a long time on this one, but here is what I did quickly in order to get you started with the original.
    http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1MBjrjRMh9kwlGlueC1ECDnMDxfPH0
Select the person (you) with magnetic lasso tool, or any other selection tool of your choice
    Create levels adjustment layer #1
Press CTRL+right white rectangular box in levels adj. layer #1
    Select original image
    Go to Select>Inverse
    Create levels adjustment layer #2
By double clicking the control box in each of the adjustment layers you can drag the sliders.for improvement of foreground and background
I merged the visible layers. The sky needs attention.
I opened a new, blank file and utilized blue color C7D7EA. This is a nice light blue. I selected a patch of this, copy/pasted this over the sky in the original picture. It will be on its own layer. Alternately you can select a nice sky from another picture in order to get a source. Set blend mode to darken for this layer.
    Set foreground color to white
Access foreground to transparent, linear gradient , drag from below up to about ther top of the tree line
I have some cloud brushes from the Adobe Studio Exchange (free), and added a few clouds.

  • Please help me make Encore button layers in Photoshop

I modified a library menu from Encore in CS4 but my button layers are off kilter so that the selected and activate layers just look like jumbled text.  I made my buttons from text of the material they link too, so the layer two and three text looks offset and murky. I'd like to have the actual text change color for the select and activate layer. I envision a color scheme from the US flag. Normal state is red, selected blue and activate white. I can't figure out how to do this. One thought I had was that perhaps the text needs to be changed to a smart object and then it can be set up. But the color palette in Encore is confusing to me. Anyone able to provide me an instruction list to do this?

    Thanks Bill:
I have navigated to your article (web page I saw did not have the images) and already attempted to create my menu following the isntructons. I backed off because I have a bigger edit issue. I have a sequence with a decode mpeg error with video drop out and loss of sync that I have now asked a question for on the Premiere forum. This is not a screen shot of my layers with your transparencies but the one that corresponds  my menu above.
It differs from the menu of my prior project referenced above in that my text layer is at 100% opacity as you can see.
My prior menu with effects on the text layer has about 73% opacity and 40% opacity in the fill. You can see how it works from the normal to the selected state.
When I imported my Cuba menu into Encore and viewed the selected and activated states the whole thing became a mess. I think my solution to make a simple change in the states as I did in the first menu is to open the color dialog in Encore and select the best color to make a workable change as to a good blue as I can get. I'll do some color research to see if that can even work.
I wish i could see the images of how your transparency process came out. I may run out of time to use it here because I have to solve the sync problem and get this overdue project delivered, but I will try it later.

I am thinking about buying an 8gb iPod Touch, should i save some dough and buy the 1st gen iPod Touch or pay a bit more and buy the 2nd gen?
Also, what makes the 2nd gen iPod Touch better then the 1st gen, what has been improved, changed, etc...?
    Thanks in advance.

I had the 1st gen touch since it first came out and just got the 2nd gen touch last month. I'll list a few things I like about the 2nd gen touch.
    1. internal speaker. makes a huge difference in my opinion.
    2. new design. alot nicer to hold in your hand than the 1st gen.
    3. seems faster overall than the 1st gen touch.
4.display no longer has blue tint. now has more of a yellow tint. makes pics and movies look a little better.
If you can afford the 2nd gen touch I would highly recommend it.

  • Please help me make this work-through easier!

just started a project and figure motion would be best suited to acheive what i'm attempting:
take a time-lapse shot of a beautiful background with three picture frames in the foreground
take 100-200 scanned pictures and over the course of 3-4 mins slowly fade each pic in/out of each picture frame
it's my idea for showcasing a "slide show" type of project.
i can get the gist of how to make this happen, but it seems there should be a faster way. for example, is there any way to copy and paste the attributes of an object, for example, the position, and "four corner" properties? this way i could simply bring in a pic, copy, and paste, play with fading, and move on

pre-produce your 3 movies by creating  movies, made of your stills incl. dissolves
add movie 'into' frame, crop, rotate, distort to make it fitting in
    repeat for 2 other movies
    done
no need for M5, could be accomplished in FCPX alone ....

  • Please help me make my Macbook air play sound?

    Hello all!
My Macbook air doesn't play sound anymore. It originally started with when I plugged in my HDMI cord to play on my LCD TV and it wouldn't work. Then I started fiddling with the settings and got it to work for a second. Then with a little more fiddling, somehow managed to turn off internal speakers. The volume is grey with no controls. If I adjust volume with keyboard, the cross out sign shows. I just would love to get some music coming out of my laptop again, and if I could get the HDMI to work too, that would be bonus!!

Try doing an SMC reset     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964    Then go into system prefs/sound/output and makes sure internal speakers are highlighted, if they aren't click on them

  • Help me decide on what apple laptop i want to get. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

hi, as you can see, i am new to the discussions. i grew up on a mac and have had a mac for a family computer all of my life.
well i started really getting into video games, (especcially computer games). and went to buy my first computer that i didnt have to share. of course it was a pc (acer aspire 3500 laptop). i was into games.
so i got used to windows, and its ok. but not vary fun. and after a while i started to get jealous of my best friend and his ibook G4 and all of its capabilities. i was really into blizzard games. and i now reallise they are mac compatible Doh! of course i also liked CS. as anyone with a pc does. anyways im getting old of games but still like to play the accasional. and i went to apples website and was amazed with tiger. and found out about bootcamp and all that stuff. i wanted a laptop, since i do alot of travelling. and i was intruiged by the macbook. i would go for the higher end one. with some upgraded ram.(white) but then there is the macbook pro with some great graphics capabilities. but comparing the two i found that macbook performs just as well, sometimes better than the IMO overpriced macbook pro. i am not really willing to spend 3000 dollars on a laptop or any computer really. i just want a good reliable Apple lappy that will last me a while. now i AM willing to spend 2000 dollars on a macbook pro or an upgraded macbook. but what one is the better deal? i think it is pretty obvious that its the macbook. BUT- i have heard many many a bad things about some of these macbooks. such as battery problems, overheating issues. and random shut downs. i dont want those hassles! is a macbook pro less prone to theese sort of things and is it worth getting over a macbook? Or are all of these problems with the macbook just early production problems and i should wait a while for them to be resolved? please help me make this decision. this is the only place i could find to post this so i hope its ok to have this topic here. and sorry about the life-story. i just need to get some honest opinions, because i need a new laptop soon (mine is on the way out) and this is a big chunk of change here. thanks in advance.
acer aspire 3500 laptop with a 30 minute lasting battery and has fallen apart. Windows XP i need a mac....

I think that you should go with the MacBook also and get it maxed out.
I know you have heard this now from everyone that has posted on this topic but it is true that a maxed out MacBook is better then a MacBook Pro.
The games work perfectly on my MacBook and the games that I have played have been, The Sims, Orgeon Trail, Halo, Tiger Woods, Madden 07.
No problems and graphics are stunning.
I also like the size in the Macbook since I also travel a lot and I my brother has the MacBook Pro and he hates lugging it around on airplanes and stuff since it is a lot bigger.
    So...
Final Answer: MacBook with 2gb of RAM and a 120gb hardrive since you are willing to spend 2000 dollars.
    Good Luck and Have Fun!
