Powerbook G4 Laptop, wont use PC card for wireless internet.

I have a G4 powerbook laptop and this model was actually put together prior to airport being installed. What I've been trying to do is insert a 802.11g card into the PC slot. I've tried both netgear and motorola and while it will detect both, it won't see it as a viable wireless internet option. I've been told that the Motorola card, wn825g, is one of the more successful options. Does anyone know a way to install the right drivers *or where to find* so that my network preferences look for aiport cards? I've been told that this card would be detected as airport but i've had no such luck.

How do I set up my kids laptop to have to ask for wireless internet password everytime?

I don't want my kids to be able to just click on a web browser and automatically connect to the internet. I want the wireless internet to require a password everytime in order to log on to the wirelss router.

The AirPort Extreme (and other Apple routers) do not have this type of capability. Using the AirPort Extreme, it is possible to enable one or both of the following options:
1) Require a password to to connect to the wireless network every time the network is accessed
2) Set up daily time limits for each device that will be allowed to connect to the wireless network
If you need an applicaton to control access to the Internet or specific sites on the Internet, you might take a look at OpenDNS as a potential solution.

Setting up a new imac g5 for wireless internet.

I have recently brought a new imac g5 and want to set it up by wireless internet.
My dad lives 2 doors down from me and has a pc with broadband and i was wondering if i could use his broadband by setting up my mac with wireless.
What would i need to do this and would it matter that he has a pc.

I'm not too sure about the iMac but I know my laptops can pick up wifi signals that are a good 1/2 mile away, in the City of Baltimore for example, with my laptop, I can pickup 4 - 6 signals from my Studio, obviously most of them are protected (secured) signals, and I know for a fact there are not 6 people around me running independent wireless broad band within a few houses.
It really all depends on how strong a signal the router can put out and how good the iMac can pick up. 2 houses is not very far away here in the US in regards to acquiring a signal... your dad is going to have to set up the router in a window facing your place and you will have to set up to a window nearest his place, if you can pick up a signal but is weak then try the 'signal booster'... Set up headaches: two AX, one for music one for wireless internet

I hope someone can please help, have gone round and round with this, although I assyne it's easy for those in the know.
So I have one AX connected via ethernet to a modem. This is set up as a wireless network on my macbook - all good... although the connection is pretty lame given that the AX is just down the hall.
I have another AX in the room with the macbook, sitting next to the stereo. This is just for music (not a wireless/internet connenction). How do I set this up? I try to go to AP Utility, but it always wants to switch the network, so I know this ain't the right way.
I guess it has to do with connecting the second AX up to the first, but it's all so bloody technical (to me - ugh).

Yes that is correct. You would temporarily switch networks to connect to the 2nd AirPort Express (AX). Then configure that AX to join the wireless network provided by the other AX. Then you will only have one wireless network.

Your email provider has blocked the standard mail port 25 for sending emails and is requiring a different port. This is to avoid mail relays that use mail clients to send spam. You need to find the port that is used by your provider for sending outgoing mail. Then change the settings in your email account on your phone to match the port. You will also have to provide some security credentials for the account.
You can also try deleting the email account from your iphone, and the adding the email account back as this will many times set the correct port for sending emails.
You could also do a Google search on the the settings for your device with your email provider. That will provide you with the proper settings.

Parental controls for wireless internet use?

This is my first post here. I've had an iPod mini for a while, and I just bought my son an ipod touch for Christmas. We have wireless internet in our home, and now I am concerned that he can browse anything, anytime! Is there a way to set parental controls to restrict what he views on the internet via his itouch? Thank you!

As a parent of 3 boys I can say that parental controls is no small issue.
A relatively simple thing you can do is set up an account (free) with OpenDNS.
See: http://opendns.com/ Once the account is set up you can specify what content should be block and what should not be blocked.
Then set the DNS servers on your iPod Touch to the OpenDNS servers (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220). See: http://andrewescobar.com/archive/2007/07/06/change-iphones-wi-fi-dns-settings-to -connect-to-the-internet/
Alternatively, you can set up your home router to use the OpenDNS servers and protect every computer in your home.
Note: neither of this solutions protect your son when he uses an open network OUTSIDE of your home for internet access.

New to Mac...how do I get set up for wireless internet?

I've just been given a new Mac Book as a gift, and previously had a desktop windows computer that i used Comcast cable internet to connect to internet.
Can someone give me some pointers as to how I need to set up my internet now so I can be wireless? Can i still go through my comcast provider?

I've got an Comcast/RCA branded modem with both ethernet and USB connections.

Some third party 802.11n access points exist, but due to their being in draft specification, many won't give you full 802.11n access, and only give you 802.11g speeds unless their firmware is the same as Apple's.
Most are apparently operating off of the same draft spec. I'll just note that my D-Link D-615 notes an 802.11n connection with my late 2007 MacBook.
And "same firmware" seems to be a stretch in description. Firmware is specific to the hardware, so of course two different manufacturers are going to have different firmware - even if they are functionally compatible. Compatibility with various 802.11n draft or the eventual final standard should mean that the firmware is written to support the standard, with implied compatibility with other equipment designed to the same standard.

What to do with Time Capsule when not using for Wireless Internet

I previously connected my Time Capsule to my fiber optic router but in my no home this is no longer needed as the cable TV company now provides 160 MPS Internet in a router that contains a wireless router built in. It works fine. My computer is now connected wirelessly to that router (too far to take advantage of the wired connection).
Therefore I want my Time Capsule to just be connected to the computer for backups. I gather I have to connect it via Lan and make sure it does not transmit r receuve wirelessly. In fact, other wireless computers in the huse occasionally try to log into the old Time Capsule PPoE settings, so I want to erase them and start fresh.

By the way, I have a first generation Aiport Express that I hope to use with my new cable router (modem?). I assume it will work as it did with the Time Capsule. Purpose is for Airplay with an audio system.

Ok, this is what I have:
Wall--> Cable modem with wireless (Motorola SURFboard SBG6580J Wireless Cable Modem Gateway.)
Other Room IMAC connected wirelessly to Cable Modem (no Ethenet connection to it since there is no jack and too far to run a cable (permanently--I can do for setup if needed)---> connected to TC and Time Capsule is backing up ok. Time Capsule is also not connected to the Modem

Yes, This is what I am wondering. Do I have to connect it by LAN to the Motorola? A few times, when it was just plugged into the Wall, my Mac airport utility found but them could not connect to my Express. maybe because I did not configure it to work with the Motorola as you say.

Ok, this confirms what I guessed. Connecting the computer to the Expressby Lan? Is that what you mean?

No range for wireless internet

About two weeks ago, Airport just stopped working for me unless I am right beside my wireless router (LinkSys WRT54G). I have a MacBook. Today I upgraded to Leopard and am still experiencing problems. I can't even access the internet from 15 feet away!
My buddy's MacBook is working fine, and the same goes for all of the PC's in the house. I have tried changing routers, but it does not work.
Sometimes I will get good reception from my network (and even my neighbors' networks) but this usually goes away in about 5 seconds.
Can anyone help me? Thanks

Since the problem occurred across OS revisions, it could be a hardware issue - either your card or antenna connection.
You may want to try taking your MacBook to a local Apple Store and see if you experience the same inability to connect there.
It could also be another device - a cordless phone, a neighbor's router, etc. - interfering with your signal.
Once again a trip to an Apple Store or other location with a WiFi hotspot would help you determine if that were the issue.

I have an Imac G4 and would like to install USB adapter for wireless internet connectivty. Is this possible with my system ?

Wireless internet not working at my house when I use my laptop (using a linksys wrt54g2 router)

I am using a laptop for wireless internet (Dell D610). I have no problem using wireless internet at my school and in other places, but at my house, I can’t browse the internet. The router at my house has a strong signal (4 or 5 bars) and when I try to connect to it, it says that I am connected, but when I open up the internet browser, I can’t get online. The router is in a room right next to mine and it is on the same floor. It is a Linksys WRT54G2 router.
When I go to the network connections folder, for the wireless network connection icon, it says “not connected, firewalled.” I can still browse the internet, though (at places other than my house).
Another thing that I want to mention- I can't connect to other routers in the neighborhood either (the ones that aren't secured). It just doesn't connect (but for the router in my house, it connects). But my roommate told me that a bunch of people have connected to this one guy's router.
What is the problem here? What can I do to make the internet work? Why would I be able to access the school's wireless internet and not the one in my house?

Whats the Wireless Settings you have set on your Router, I there might be the possibility that you have set the security mode on your Router too high thats the reason you are not getting connected to your Wireless Network. Follow the setps to change the Wireless settings on your Router and i think this might help in getting you connected to your wireless network.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop).In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
Click on the Wireless tab
- Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
- Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
- Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
Click on the Sub tab, Wireless MAC Filter..
Make sure the Wireless MAC Filter on your Router is Turned Off.
Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

Need Help setting up 2 wireless internet computers with 54g wireless router

I setup the 54g wireless router using the setup disk. It appears to have worked find and the first laptop has wireless internet. I am not familiar with setting up a totally wireless network so I am not sure if I did the rest right. I then setup the 54g wireless internet router on the 2nd computer. It appears to have loaded but will not connect to the internet. I looked at the linksys setup etc... for both computers and all is the same including the WPA key, IP address, and the rest. No differences noted. I have no idea why the 2nd computer does not have wireless internet access. It has wired access only. The 2nd computer shows the wireless network but won't connect to it. I click on it and hit refresh and nothing happens. I am at a loss as to what to do now.
With 2 wireless computers, must there be a main computer and a secondary computer? The 1st computer also doesn't have access to windows network setup for some reason. It tells me to go to the knowledge base at microsoft.com and look up 871122. No idea why the windows network setup is not working. It did work before I got a new cable service provider and modem. However, the windows network setup is working on the 2nd computer. Any help is appreciated.

does the 2nd computer even need the router info loaded into it like the 1st computer or should it be enough that the wireless network was created on the 1st computer? In other words, would having the router info loaded in both computers cause the 2nd one to not connect? I have spent hours on this and I am very confused now.
My router connects fine to the cable modem. the 1st computer connects fine to the router and gets the wireless internet without a problem. Again, the 2nd computer shows the network name but won't connect to it. help please!!
