[845 Series] 845E MAx2: CPU cooler and power supply stop when power cable plugged in to HDD

Board: MSI 845E Max2
BIOS: 6398E V.1
UPDATED BIOS: 6398IMS V.5.7 040203
CPU: Intel Celeron 1,7GHz
RAM: 512GB Infineon
Power: ATX 300W
Hard Disks: WD and Maxtor 10GB-30GB
Hi all,
whenever I plug in the power cable to the hard disk computer shuts down after 2-5 seconds. If I try to start it again nothing happens. So I need to plug off and on the ATX-connector again so that the power supply works and the CPU-fan spins. However, as long as a hard drive is attached (it does not even need to be connected to any of the IDE-controller; having connected to the power supply is sufficient) it shuts down.
Following tests were done:
1- other hard disks were used
2- other power supply resources were used
3- computer was started with short connecting the power switch through the respective pins
Still the same result. If no hard disk is plugged in, system starts fine.
So I flashed the bios to A6398ims.570 without connecting the hard disks (since no hard disk drives were available the win98 start diskette created a c drive in the physical memory - afaiu - and I flashed the bios via this generated c drive). But nothing is changed!
Does anyone have an idea?

Hi again,
after reading the PSU guide I used a HDD which was 20GB (an older one of app. 4 years) and system booted normally. It seems that the PSU of 300W was having a difficulty of serving the relative newer HDD with power. I will test it with a min. 400W PSU and let you know if the problem is completely solved.
Thanks for your helpful comments.

Does Cisco7301 "dual power supply" mean "redundant power supply"?
If unplug one power socket, 7301 continues operating?

On a 7301, I believe it does act as a redundant power supply, and this is often true for many Cisco devices with dual power supplies, but there can be exceptions.  For example, on the 6500 chassis, you might use dual power supplies in combined mode, i.e. failure of a power supply would leave the chassis short of necessary power.  The 3560X/3750X might also have insufficient power if a power supply fails when running on two (this issue may arise when using PoE).

  • Lms 4.2 didn't notify me when a Power supply stops working

    Hi Guys
i have router 7200 , one of its power supply stops working , but lms 4.2 doesn't notify me?pls help to solve this issue
    thanks
    ibrahim

    Ibrahim,
Is the 7200 being managed by LMS? Please confirm:
    1. The device is setup to be managed by fault (reference)
    2. The device credentials are correct (using the tool in Device Center)
    3. That you have logging and snmp server destination = LMS server on your router.
#3 is not necessary but optional. If #1 and #2 are correct, Fault management should pick up the failure.

  • Battery not charging and makes weird noise when power cord plugged in

I have an issue that a few people have mentioned here, my PowerBook won't recognize when a power adapter is plugged in. I've bought two power adapters recently (that I probably DON'T need now) so I know it's not a bad adapter.
For a few months it has been switching back and forth between wall and battery power but usually only when I was really working the machine either video or photo editing but it has been getting worse.
The thing that is happening to me that I haven't seen mention is my computer makes a fast ticking noise when it is plugged in. Once I unplug it, it stops. And while it was off and plugged in the computer was making a weird whistling noise.
Is this a bad DC/sound card issue and does Apple still do these types of repairs at a Genius Bar or am I on my own?
Thanks for any and all help.

I know exactly what you mean. My 17 inch PB has been quite "noisy" since I received it, but i wrote it off (I was too ecstatic that work bought me a PB). Just recently the sound has been getting louder. I'm starting to think the sound was actually electrical interference that was being picked up by the speakers. Actually today I was in a meeting (speakers still working) and the squeeling sound was getting louder (almost embarrasing loud considering I'm the apple diehard in a pc dominated office). I decided to reset my computer (not something I do often)It seemed to subside for a bit.
Well today, it looks as though my speakers have died on me. I'm not getting any sounds out of them. I'm not a newb when it comes to macs (been using macs since os9, about '99) so I've tried everything I can think of to get the speakers to come back. I believe I'm experiencing a hardware failure (reset many times, check all settings).
Hmph.....Pretty frustrating. No iTunes during work makes me sad. I'll have to check and see if my external sound still works tomorrow.

  • BR1310 power injector red when power is removed, and restored.

    Hello,
    Have a set of BR1310G-A-K9-R with AIR-PWRINJ-BLR2 injectors, feed by P/N 34-1537-02 REVA0.
If 1310 connected to injector, powered by the transformer (mentioned above)when power applied, red light between power plug and coax connector is red, no lights on back of 1310. If I then disconnect the power plug from the injector, and reconnect, same light turns green.
Any suggestions? I didn't purchase the equipment, perhaps the parts listed above are not compatible?
    Thanks for any help,
    Jeff
    Edit missing number.

Check for loose connections.the maximum distance between BR1310 and power injector is 100m.If this doesnt work Try to replace the power injector and see if it works.Perhaps replacing the power injector mostly would resolve.

  • D10 power help -- psu power supply 10-pin power adapter

i have a d10 motherboard, and i've fit it into an intel server chassis.
the PSU installed has an aux-power adapter, but it is a 4-pin used for intel server boards.
i need to convert some of the extra cables from the PSU in my chassis to work with the 10-pin connector on the motherboard (next to the 24-pin connector).
if someone could help me out and maybe provide me with adapter information, voltage information, any information.....that would be a great help.  a diagram of sorts would be greatly appreciated.  or maybe even a picture of the actual 10-pin cable going from the PSU to the motherboard??
    thank you!!

    Hi
Yeah take the MB out of case and plug in only: CPU, PSU, 1 Memory stick (to secend slot from CPU) and monitor to MB back.
If it dont boot up after that and show error for not finding KB, then what code it has on debug led?
    Hope this helps  Cheers Mummy
Disconnected everything from motherboard except CPU + cooler & second RAM DIMM, set it on a cardboard box, plugged in 20+4 main power connector and the 8 and 4+4 CPU power connectors, then tried powering up again. Couldn't connect a display because I don't have an HDMI display handy - but I figure that doesn't matter much if power isn't even on long enough for BIOS to begin loading anyway. Nothing new happened. Unfortunately, a debug code never comes up.

  • No power when IDE cable plug into mainboard

The motherboard I'm working with is a K7 Pro ATX IR3 Mainboard. Whenever I plug in the IDE cable to the mainboard, it seemed that there is no power coming from the power supply. I tried this with a cd-rom and the light isn't lit or do anything. As soon as I unplug the IDE cable from the mainboard, the CD-ROM works...meaning I can push the button for open and close. All the lights, HD and Power lights, on the front of the case are not even flashing or turn on.
If anyone has any suggestion I'm greatly appreciated.

     ?(

Sorry for the confusion. In this situation when I talked about cable, I mean the IDE cable or floppy cable and not the power supply cable. I have one floppy, cd-rom drive, hard drive, sound card, and a video card. I believed the power supply is a 400 watt, although I'm sure. I just purchased this last week so I am pretty it'll handle what I am trying to do. When I turn the computer on these are the things I believed that are running with all three cables one end plugged into the mainboard and the other end to the devices such floppy, hard drive, and cd-rom.
    cpu
    cpu fan
    case fan
    D-LED light is on
Devices that are not runing with all three cables plugged in to the mainboard and the other end to the devices such floppy, hard drive, and cd-rom.
    floppy drive
    cd-rom drive
    hard drive
    HD LED light
    Power LED light
Now, if I unplug all the cables from the mainboard or from the devices then all the devices seem to have power coming to it.

  • K8N NEO4 new old power supply died new power supply installed will not boot

This is an old build. The K8N NEO4 powers up and is followed by a long beep. The lights on the back of the USB card (4 lights( indicate 3 greens and one red in the upper right corner. According to the instruction manual, this means that Initializing Floppy Drive Controller
This will initialize Floppy Drive and controller. This makes no sense.
I flashed the CMOS both using the red button and removing the motherboard battery to confirm the power supply was bad. In hindsight, I wish I had not.
I switched from a 500W power suppply that died to a 430W thermaltake power supply. I've disconnected a hard drive and a burner to see if power was an issue, it was not the cause.
I'm pulling my hair out here, please help!

"Is it possible the power supply took the CPU with it when it died?"
Yes it's possible that it did that. It's also possible that other components were killed also, that's why changing and trying different parts are required until you find everything that may have been damaged. We can only suggest what might be bad and you or someone else will need to do the actual work, there is no getting around that. We can give the serious advice, you need to do the serious labor.
"...don't want to take the Tuniq tower 120 off if another processor will not work"
Anybody that repairs PC's would need to swap parts to be 100% sure of what's wrong.
Pin #20 is where -5V would be if newer PSU's still had -5V. The only the reason you would need the -5V is if you had an older K8N MB that had Creative sound on it instead of Realtek.

  • HT204154 My macbook with thunderbolt display without power supply stops working on battery mode, is that normal?

I use a 27" Thunderbolt display on my macbook pro. If I disconnect the power supply from the mac, the monitor stops working.
Is that normal or do I have to make some changes on the setup ?

    Greetings koningsvaren,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you connect your MacBook Pro to an external Thunderbolt display and everything works as it should while connected to power, but once power is removed from the MacBook Pro, the second display no longer functions. It sounds like you may be using this configuration with your MacBook Pro closed, otherwise known as closed-clamshell mode. In order to use a second display with your Mac portable in closed-clamshell mode, the Mac portable must be connected to power. Please refer to the attached article for more information. If this is not the case, please let me know.

  • Powe supply clicking when i plug in mac pro

why does my mac boot up when i plug it in?
when it boots the power supply starts clicking, like a fan hitting something, when i pull the plug it slows down slowly, aany ideas?
    thanks

i have the same problem, if it could be considered a problem.
It power up instantly when i plug in the cable, without pushing the start button. But i have no fan clicks.
I did a search on the web and found many others messages about this. I called the support and did a SMC reset, but it still power up when i plug it. Hope this will not produce any damage in the future.

  • Power supply orange even though AC plugged in

I usually leave my Macbook Pro plugged into AC all the time. Today all of a sudden the power supply was amber/orange even though I never unplugged it. The symbol in the upper right menu bar shows it is charging. Is it my battery or the AC adapter? I have the AC adapter that was recalled recently.

Once your battery's charge level drops below 95% the charger will automatically kick in. At that time the indicator light on the AC adapter will turn orange to indicate the battery is charging. Once the battery returns to full charge the indicator light should turn green. This is normal behavior. Even though the AC adapter is connected all the time the battery's charger is shut off when the battery is fully charged and will not turn on again until the charge level drops below 95%. Because you don't use the battery it may take considerable time before the charge level eventually drops below 95%.
However, if the battery does not appear to ever fully charge then you may have a defective battery or defective AC adapter.

  • Power supply stopped giving time left

    Hi there,
My power supply "thing" in the upper right corner of my screen stopped telling me how much time I have left when the powercord is in or out. It now simply says " not loading" and even when I put the powersupply on it will say the same thing while it is in fact loading. (I know since my notebook doensnt shut off then)
I had this problem a year ago and there was a trick for it to make it work normally again, anyone any ideas?
Its not the biggest problem, but it is really annoying not knowing how much time you've got left!
    Thanks!
    Dientje

You could control- clicking on the battery menulet in the upper right and try changing the display setting>show> ex percentage and change back.
You can try relaunching the menu extras in terminal,  copy and paste:
    killall SystemUIServer
If that does not jump start,  it could be corrupt plist.  Try moving to the desktop or deleting the
    com.apple.systemuiserver.plist  found here youruser/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
    followed by
    killall SystemUIServer
this rebuilds the plist  and relaunches the menu extras
