845 ULTRA Ver:1 Mainboard, Live Update Online, USB 2.0 problems

I have a MSI 845 ULTRA ver:1 mainboard (actually have 6 of them.)  I installed a USB 2.0 5 port hub and connected a 250gb external harddrive.  The system reports an I/O device error.  Any ideas on how to solve ?
The current BIOS is AMI 1.50a.  I tried using the "Live Update Online" but only got as far as the "Now Loading" screen.  Anyone know how to get past this point ?
Any help would be appreciated.

Try not to use MSI Live Update.  It is not the best Tool that was ever released and too many users have already messed up their systems (bad flashes, wrong BIOS) using MSI LU.  If it starts behaving strange before you even get to the point of actually flashing a new BIOS Version, you should not hesitate to stay away from it.
Do it the "DOS-way" and use a floppy or a bootable USB-stick.

  • Msi live update/live update online vista x64 help

i have a MSI K9A2 CF-F Socket AM2+ 790X motherboard with a phenom 8450 and want to update the bios, aside from using a windows 98/me boot disc the only other option is live update/live update online, i am having countless errors and pop up boxes when trying to use either of these and am getting rather frustrated, i get everything from mmio errors to runtime errors and wondows randomly shutting down because of a conflict with uac, if anyone has used these or knows how i can update the bios in vista x64 i would be really grateful

Never ever use live update! Although MSI still offers that tool running a live update tool and upgrading an online bios is considered very risky. We have countless issues with live update. Problem is that any windows issue while updating could kill your board. In addition most live update applications won't work in vista64 because it restricts bios access for apps except those optimized for vista64.
Updating with a win98 boot disc/disk is still the safest way. Also you can use the forum's amazing usb flash tool which is very safe: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=108079.0

  • 845 Ultra Ver.1 (N1996) Power Switch Pin & Led

    Hi to all,
I appreciate if u could help me regarding my main board problem. I bought this main board way back year 1997, if i’m not mistaken. My PC still running & work perfectly w/ OS windows 7 ultimate. Unfortunately my Power Supply spoilt & change w/ new one. My problem is,  i can’t find my Manual & i don’t where did i take out the power supply switch & power light on the main board, due to no caption on board. Is there any web site that I can down load? I really appreciate if could help me to identify where can i plug the power switch & led.
    Thanks & Cheers

Not too much info on which model 845 ultra you have as there are some OEM versions of that board
    also, but here MSIs manual:

  • Live Update Online

One of the main reasons I bought this MSI Motherboard (790FX-GD70), was because of the "Simple" bios update procedure.  MSI still has the live update on-line on their site advertising like it's a great thing.
Is MSI doing false advertising?  Is the newest version any better?
I have not tried to use it yet since reading all the problems here.  I know you don't have to flash your bios, but why not have the latest one?  I am having some memory problems and thought maybe the latest bios would help.
What is the real answer?  Anyone know?  If I contact MSI are they going to tell me their Live Update On-line works well?
    Anyway, thanks for listening.
    cusafr

Yes, I have been to the OCZ web site and have tried many different suggested settings.  Last night my system froze in BIOS. Had to reboot and set like for the first time.  This morning BSOD right after POST.
Did a memtest last night-no errors.  Did a checkdisk test-no errors.
Currently have the 8GB (4x2) AMD Black Edition memory modules set at 8-8-8-24-2t.
    Any ideas?

    Conclusion
12 crash dumps have been found and analyzed. Note that it's not always possible to state with certainty whether a reported driver is really responsible for crashing your system or that the root cause is in another module. Nonetheless it's suggested you look for updates for the products that these drivers belong to and regularly visit Windows update or enable automatic updates for Windows. In case a piece of malfunctioning hardware is causing trouble, a search with Google on the bug check errors together with the model name and brand of your computer may help you investigate this further.

  • MSI Live Update 3 . . . Problems

well it works like this.  I start it up.  The window opens up ready to launch but I get the pop-up blocker ofcourse blocking it.  No prob.  I click "temporarily allow blocked content."  It continues to load but never shows the buttons that are usually on the left hand side: Bios, VGA bios, Utilities etc.  Now I have done all of the advice it says on the page in case it doesn't load:
    Quote
Note: In order to operate this application properly, please note the following suggests.
Set the IE security setting "Download signed ActiveX controls" to [Enable] or [Prompt]. (System default is [Prompt]).
Caution!!! For update security, we strongly recommend you terminate any other executing programs; such as Outlook, ICQ, anti-virus utilities, when using Live Updated.
    Update Microsoft® Windows® Installer
Now I have the most recent version, but here's the kicker.  If I install it from scratch, it will always work the first time.  Then it stops working.  the only thing I have NOT done from the above listed advice is to "update Microstoft Windows Installer."  The reason is is that when you click on the link it takes you to this place: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=4B6140F9-2D36-4977-8FA1-6F8A0F5DCA8F
As you can see it says for Windows NT or 2000 and it's from 2001!!!
I have TRendMicro virus protection and I always turn it off, but still the live update page just doesn't fully load.  Any ideas?

    it is because activeX.
Ah, that makes sense.  So it is because I use Mozilla as my default browser (no ActiveX support).  So, anyone who has anything other than IE set as their default browser will be unable to use Live Update.
Although, now that I think about it, if it's just an ActiveX issue, then another workaround to this problem would be to run Live Update, copy the URL from the Mozilla window that pops up, paste that URL into a new IE window, and go from there.  I just tried this, and lo and behold, it works.  I think I'll stick with the Live Monitor method, though, personally.

  • MSI 845 Ultra support for PATA/133 HD

I have an MIS 845 Ultra-AR (S478) mainboard with 1X80GB HD attached and the 2 ATA/133 Raid slots that I don't use. I also have a Maxtor SATA/150 PCI Card installed with a SATA/133 drive (100 GB) attached and running. I'm wondering what is the best approach, if any, to attach a Maxtor PATA/133 (300GB) drive (6L300R0). Can it attach to the onboard IDE or is it possible to attach to the SATA card. Attaching to the IDE so far, on AUTO, the BIOS recognizes the drive as 33.8 GB. Maxblast 4 will also only partition 33.8 GB. Attached to the SATA card on the Ultra ATA port ir recognizes the drive but again Maxstor 4 will only partition 33.8 GB.
    AMIBIOS was released 11/26/2001  A6398MS  V3.0. CPU is Pentium P4 1.6GHZ.
I've been in computing for many years ... this is just getting a bit deeper that I've had to go before. I hope to learn from it as well.
Any help would be greately appreciated.

Make sure you are not using a NCQ based drive as ICH4 doesn't support.
Next, you'll have to install the RAID Controllers for the IDE Controller to work.
You can also get a SATA to PATA convertor if you want to use the SATA PCI Card.

  • 845 Ultra + Adaptec Raid 2400a

[ May be a bit off topic sorry ]
    Hi,
    Motherboard : MSI 845 Ultra Ver 1
    Bios Version : 1.50
Graphic controler : Generic PCI VGA
    Ram : 2x 256 DDR
    Raid controler : Adaptec 2400a
( at the end there should be 2 of those raid controlers with 6 HD connected to it : 2 x 40 Gb IBM ICL series and 4 x 120 Gb Maxtor D540 series )
I'm having problems entering my raid card bios using this motherboard.
I type my " ctrl + A " to enter the bios, and the only thing I get is 2 lines with a random text in different color on the top of my screen. I'm able to Ctrl+alt+del to reboot, and able to boot without trying to enter the raid card bios.
I changed my raid card, and my disks connected to it. I changed the PCI slot.
Anyone have a Clue for that ? Anyone was able to use that kind of controler on that MB ?
    Regards ...

The 845 Ultra has bios versions from 3.0 to 3.4 so you either wrote the wrong version or the wrong board.

  • Bios updates for 845 Ultra?

Is anyone aware of any pending bios updates for this motherboard or has it been put out to pasture ?  I'd still like to see a fix for the warm restart problem when overclocking in addition to the 1.65 core voltage limitation.  Before anyone says that those won't be fixed - I can wish, can't I?

I have the 845 Ultra-ARU and I am running my 1.8A at 2.52 GHz with a voltage of 1.71 actual applied volts.  This system is rock stable with a fsb of 140.  I have done the VID-pin mod, however.  I too would also like to see a BIOS update for a couple of reasons.
    1)  According to the temperatures being reported by PC Alert III, my BIOS, and MBM5, my CPU idles at 50 C and goes up to 67-68 C under a full Prime95 load.  The reason why I think this is faulty is because I have run my computer with the side panel off, and there is no difference in the CPU or system temperature.  Also, when running the Prime95 test, I've put my hand right on the heatsink and it is BARELY warm.  The heatsink is making solid contact with the CPU, so if the CPU was actually at 68 degrees C, the heatsink too would be incredibly warm.  My own hand tells me that it cannot be 152 degrees Fahrenheit.
    2)  THE MEMORY RATIOS ARE GARBAGE!!!!!  I've got a 2.52 GHz CPU that is suffering a bottleneck from the measly 2.0 GB/s that my RAM is able to feed it.  Every other motherboard I've ever seen gives you the options of a couple different memory ratios.  I would at least like the option to run my memory at a different speed than my fsb.  Perhaps a 3:4 ratio could be done?  Just something so that I can try and get a little more bandwidth out of my RAM.  I know that the board is only designed to support PC1600 and PC2100 DDR RAM, but how could it hurt to give the option to support PC2400 or PC2700, maybe even PC3200 DDR RAM?  Plenty of other 845 chipset based boards can do that.  (Not officially, but through a variety of memory ratios.)  I'm just tired of not being able to do anything with my memory.
