  • RAID BIOS sees HDD but XP does not

I have a K7T266Pro2-RU (MSI 6380) mobo with an 80 GB Maxtor HDD on IDE3 and a 250 GB WD on IDE4, using the latest FastTrak100 RAID drivers from the promise website. On IDE 1 and 2 I have 3 optical drives installed.
The problem is that while the RAID bios detects the HDD's just fine (as two separate Stripe 1+0 arrays) and boots fine off IDE3, XP does not see the other array and therefore the larger HDD is invisible. Of course I have SP1 installed with the LBA support, and when I try the HDD on one of the primary IDE channels it is recognised just fine by XP.
So one might think that the problem lies with the RAID driver.....except to throw another spanner in the works, I did have this working fine on the RAID controller, until I decided to re-install XP from scratch on the smaller HDD (larger HDD is full of data). But for some reason this fresh install will not recognise the second HDD on the RAID controller... whats killing me is that it did work beforehand, and now it wont. I cant think what I have missed to make this work....
    Any ideas appreciated please

You really had it working before? Weird - it's not supposed to work! The Promise controller supports either 0 or 1. I can't see how you got 0+1.
And how can the second (bigger) HDD be the "other array" if you've got mirroring in there somewhere? OK, you can maybe fool a single drive into thinking it's a striped array but no way a mirror is anything other than a second drive which is part of the SAME array as the first drive.
It looks like you have successfully created a mirrored array using the 2 drives (RAID 1). There's no way you have a striped array accross the 2 drives since they have to be the same size for that to work. Mirroring is OK with drives of different sizes. The trouble is, the extra space on the larger drive is just wasted - the total array space is limited to the size of the smaller drive.
Since the second drive is just a mirror and the extra space is always unusable, it's no surprise you can't see it in XP. You would never want to read or write specifically to the mirror.

  • 6730 (655 Max-FISR) RAID BIOS menu - how to enter?

    Hey all,
according to http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=424, this model (6730) should have RAID 0 or 1 support.
But I can't quite figure out anything in the BIOS menu of it that has to do with this. So I installed two Serial ATA hdds onto my motherboard, and they are being detected just fine, no problem at all. So according to the Serial ATA menu, I start installing win2000 and do the F6 and S stuff, loading the drivers for the SATA drives. Then when I get to where it asks me where to install windows too, I get TWO harddrives listed for me to choose from, not one (I'm trying to do RAID 0 btw).
Well coming to think about it, that's logical: I did not set ANYTHING in the BIOS about the drives being in RAID -- I read some guides online on how to install RAID drives -- supposedly you press Ctrl-F to enter the BIOS for RAID controller and set RAID0, RAID1 and those stuff there. Where is this RAID BIOS menu for the MS-6730 motherboard?
most threads I read here, when people talk about doing RAID, most people get through the step "configure the hdds as RAID 0/1" really quickly by a mention with a sentence -- I think that's the part I'm stuck on. Maybe my question should be... how do I enter the RAID BIOS for this motherboard at all? The manuals that came with the mobo don't really have anything on RAID *at all*...
    [edit]
btw... I'm new to RAID arrays, so I'm not sure if I'm doing this right. I put my two (identical) hdds one connected to ser1 and one connected to ser2, on the motherboard. is that how you are supposed to do it? they are WD Caviar SATA drives (120gb) btw. jumpers shouldn't be a problem, the WD web site says for a SATA drive, the jumpers are only for power settings, no master/slave things.
    Thanks for any help.

well assuming you have connected the sata lead and a power connector all i can think is your psu is very poor on the 12v line, how many amps does it give
you might try the jumper bit in the link as well
you will have to paste the full link in

  • Help me PLEASE kt4 raid bios

Ive already read through loads of posts but im not sure where im going wrong. i have a kt400 ultra and i use my pc as a HTPC, so as i fill a HDD with films i go out and buy another. now ive filled all my IDE1 and 2 ports and i just baught another 120gig maxtor drive and just wanna use it, for the time being on its own if possible in IDE3. Dont really care about performance just want it to work. Now ive plugged my hdd in and booted the machine , Gone in to the RAID BIOS and auto setup defined an array, witch went fine, re-booted and the drivers for the raid wouldent install properly it said CODE10 i beleave. So i restarted the machine to see if that sorts it and now the RAID BIOS has dissapeared. ive tried changing the IDE Cable and tried all the HDD jumper settings. i can get the bios to come up if i disconnect the hdd, boot, shutdown re-connect the hdd and boot again then its there and it sees the array but the drivers still wront start in winXP. Are u just not allowed to run one HDD on the raid in with case ill go out and buy anoter SATA drive, Or is this some weird fault.
    Thanks for any replys

Surelly you will agree with me that the most common post about arrays, is the one that says that the array controller seems don´t like spare disks no matter what says the instructions.  8)

  • Now RAID BIOS Hangs-Can't get into it!!

Folks - On a new build, the BIOS (v1.6) on my Neo4-F worked fine. I was trying to get Windows to not lose missing nt___ files. I kept deleting arrays and trying new array configs, reloading windows (yes, loading the RAID drivers with F6), but Windows still wouldn't load due to missing dll's.  Now when I set the RAID SATA settings in the BIOS, save & exit, on the reload it hangs at the Nvidia RAID ROM BIOS screen "Detecting array..." and won't go any further. So I have to power down, reset the CMOS to get the BIOS back.  If I go in and reset the SATA RAID drives, it'll do the same thing, otherwise if I don't set the RAID, it'll go on to load Windows as normal.  What happened and how can I get into the RAID BIOS again???  Thanks

Try having just one connected and boot . (do a cmos clear also ) .
You can also leave the drive powered , and just insert/remove the sata cable when system is running .
Just don't plug/unplug the HDs power connector while system is powered on.
Sometimes the raid hangs if the drive order has been reversed (the raid mirror is confused whats drive #1) .So you should also try switching the drives on the connected sata ports .

  • Updating VIA RAID Bios on K8T Master-FAR 2

How do I update the VIA Raid bios that came with the v.220D SATA drivers?
I see the two rom files (6420R231.rom and 6420N231.rom) in the bios directory, but no directions on how to update the bios.
    Tim

You don't. You have to wait for MSI to integrate any RAID BIOS improvements into a new BIOS release for the board.

I have two 128GB SSD in raid 0 (SuperRaid as MSI calls it) I would like to be able to overclock the CPU if possible? I'm getting some lag spikes in games and I was thinking it might have something to do with the CPU...
OC CPU maybe if you are familiar with the options, but let assume no or not recommended.
about the lag spikes, there is special EC ver for GT70 which improves GPU performance and reduces throttling.
    available at: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=162629.0
NOTE: This special EC firmware is not for barebones, but only for retails models!
other reason could be that dedicated GPU is not used, but integrated card while running this applications.
    Or VGA driver issue.

  • Installed a RAID card in my Dell Inspiron 3847. However, the RAID BIOS does not show up and I cannot install Windows 7 to it.

That is basically a summary of the problem The Dell Inspiron 3847 does not come with RAID, so I tried installing a PCI-express 1x RAID card. However, the RAID BIOS never shows up. The HDDs show up when I install the RAID controller driver in Windows 7 setup, but I cannot install Windows 7. I am using an IOCrest SY-PEX40008 RAID card with a Silicon Image Sil3124 chipset.
I tried pressing the hotkeys for the RAID BIOS listed in the card's manual, but it seems to just cause bootup to freeze. BIOS also does not seem to detect the RAID card HDDs as boot options.

%AppData% is the name of an environment variable.
On XP that variable points to C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\
"Application Data" in XP/Win2K and "AppData" in Vista/Windows 7 are hidden folders, use %APPDATA% in the File name field
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Show_hidden_files_and_folders

  • RAID Bios loading randomly?

When I boot my machine, for no apparent reason, the nVidia RAID bios version 4.60 will load up and say "Detecting RAID array..." or whatever, and hang there, even though I explicitly have RAID disabled in the bios! I am running bios 1.41 at this point, but I have  tried 1.36 and 1.37 with no better results.... I have also cleared CMOS via the jumper....
    Any thoughs on the problem?

Upgrade to bios version 1.5.  This will update the raid controller.  Ive just had the same problem with the raid hanging but i had raid.  found out that one of my sata drives had gone so i bought a weston digital raptor instead to replce the drives.

  • Solaris possibly preventing RAID BIOS launch

    Hello
I have installed a STLab A-230 2-Channel Serial ATA & ATA-133 RAID Combo and tried to boot into its RAID BIOS with no luck. The initial loading menu quickly switches to the multi-boot menu where you select to boot into Solaris or another OS. I am supposed to press Ctrl-Z, but it just switches to the boot menu without bringing up RAID BIOS. Please let me know if this would be to do with the installed Solaris and its uninstallation would solve it.
    Regards,
    Dai

You can use SMC for other purposes but it won't help your with RAID.
Sol 10 1/06 has raidctl which handles LSI1030 and LSI1064 RAIDenabled controllers (from raidctl(1M)).
Some of the PERCs (most?) are LSI but I don't know if they are chipsets used by your PoweEdge (I doubt it).
Generally you can break it down like this for x86:
If you are using hardware RAID with Solaris 10 x86 you have to use pre-Solaris (i.e. on the RAID controller) managment or hope that the manufacturer of the device has a Solaris managment agent/interface (good luck).
The only exception to this that I know of is the RAID that comes with V20z, V40z, X4100, X4200.
Otherwise you will want to go with SVM or VxVM and manage RAID within Solaris (software RAID).
SMC etc are only going to show you stuff if SVM is involved and VxVM has its own interface, otherwise the disks are controlled by PERC and just hanging out as far as Solaris is concerned.
    Hope this helps.

  • Accessing Intel Raid Bios Utility

Set it up how? A single drive or are you preparing it for a Raid?
Which connector is it attached to?
What other drives do you have and where are they attached?
If you aren't interested in running a Raid then there's no need to access the Raid Bios utility. It will only be enabled if you have set the "Configure SATA As Raid" for the Intel controller in the Bios.
In WinXP Device Manager, it's normal for the OS to identify the extra SATA ports on the 865/875 chipsets as another primary and secondary IDE controller.
Reading THE FAQ POST (specifically #5 HDD's) would also be of interest to you.

  • D20 Marvell raid bios update.

Ok i have a pair of Lenovo D20's here one is a 4158-W5K & the other is  a 4158-B6U I just noticed that one unit has a different Marvell bios than the other one.  Is there any way to update them to the newest raid bios?  Any help would be appriciated.
    Mike

Can you confirm the FW level for each individual system?
I don't think we normally push FW updates for the Marvell controllers in 20 series out to the field as there is some risk in customers messing things up and rendering their systems unusable.  It's a small risk, but it still exists.
Do you have a reason to have the systems on the same FW levels (i.e. are you encountering a problem on one that you're not seeing on the other)?  Most of the FW updates for the Marvell controllers were pretty benign in nature as I recall. Small bug fixes here and there really.

  • Raid BIOS Gone (KT4 Ultra-BSR)

I recently bought a Serial ATA Hard Drive wanting to install it on the raid controller.  But when I went to enter the Raid Controller's BIOS FastBuild Setup (at boot-time), it never shows up.
I have the KT4 Ultra-BSR, and I can see the RAID Controller enable/disable option in the Integrated Peripherals.  I have it enabled, but it NEVER  displays the RAID bios at boot-up.  This is the second KT4 Ultra I've had and I know I saw the RAID bios on the first one I had. I have the latest system BIOS installed (1.30).
Has anyone experienced this and/or know how to fix it? Is there a way for flash the RAID controller to possibly fix it?  Did the entry to the setup change from whats in the manual (ctrl-F4)?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

I've seen a couple other post like yours Shark. While that makes me feel a little more comfortable that other are having similar problems, I thinks mine's a little different.  I don't ever remember seeing the RAID BIOS on this motherboard.  I've tried turning it off and on in a row to see if mine would eventuall show, but I never see it.
Does anyone from MSI read these? I think something should be done.

  • RAID BIOS controlling Sytem HDD, not AHCI

    Hey All,
I have an XW8400 Bios 2.38, adn I enabled the RIAD+AHCI sata emulation (and I did the regedit trick too) .  AHCI bios loads but it says the my System drive ( SATA DRIVE) is being controlled by the RAID BIOS and not AHCI
