848P Neo LS "Memory Detection Test" hang

On ocassion my pc won't do a soft reboot.  It hangs at the MD Test. ( according to the Diagnostic LED's on the back.  I've swapped the Dimms slots (only 2 on this board )  and I've ran windows mem test from a floppy. No errors were found w/it.
And sometimes it reboots up normally.
Is this perhaps due to a weak power supply?

OK, i upped the DRAM voltage to 2.70.  Only way to do that on my board is to enable performace settings in the bios.  So, I then disabled "overclocking" and had to reset ALL my settings.
Ya know, why does MSI offer a board w/SATA and even when you use the Performance settings you still have to go and change the On-Chip ATA operation mode from legacy to native and THEN you STILL have to adjust so the SATA is read 1st, whew. not to mention the other settings.  Like enable floppy drive seek and the like.
Anyway, when i did ALL this, and "saved settings" It STILL hung at reboot.  System is on, keyboard is active optical drive checks itself out, but no signal to my monitor, and it will stay like that for infinity! LOL
Is my power supply perhaps to small?  I have a 400watt:
from the label on it's side,
SH     SH-400ATX
(all it gives is the colors of the individual power cables and there respective outputs, so... here goes)
ORANGE:  +3.3V   20A MAX
RED      :  +5V   40AMAX
YELLOW:  +12V   16A MAX
WHITE:  -5V   0.5A MAX
BLUE:  -12V   0.5A MAX
PURPLE:  +5SVSB   2A MAX
I would use this PSU if i thought it would last, but I've had it in another system for about 2 years and I dont know how much "life" it might have left in it.
How do you know if your PSU is going bad anyway, .... Just wait for the fan to start making a noise?

  • 865PE Neo2(6728) D-Bracket hangs at Memory Detection Test

This is terribly annoying... I just bought the mother board... Its a 865PE Neo2(6728)800mhzFSB the processor is P4 2.4ghz 800mhz, 512k l2-Cache.  I dont know who made it like i know nothing about northwood or whatever, it says Intel on the box...  I have 512MB of "Legacy Electronics" PC3200 64x64 DDR...  I also just bought a NVdia G4 Ti-4200 64mb DDR 4x AGP made by Pixelview.  I have a 160GB WD 8mb Cache 7200 HD...  Ok the problem is when i go to boot up the computer, the VIDEO doesnt come on, and when i installed the "D-Bracket" the lights hang at 3 light, top right green all other red... Says in the manual that problem is memory detection test, testing onboard memory size,  will hang if damaged or not installed properly.  Ok.  I have no idea how that wo;uld happen so, just to check i took out RAM, no dice, i changed video cards to MX440 G4, no dice, i tried disconnection the PCI slot which has the 160GB hard drive connected(why it needs this i dont know, according to WD WinXP needs...) none of this changes anything.. How do i check the onboard memory or could it be anything else?  Ok thats all i have thanks for the help!!

Did you tried to boot up the system without the D-Bracket?
Yes it still does nothing, no video...  Thats why i put in the D-Bracket.  It doesnt sound like its going through the POST either.. I dont know if computers do that anymore thou;gh haha..
If you did, did you change to another piece of RAM to test?
I have no more DDR to put in, only SDRam and im sure that wont work..  I tried moving to different slots, 1 3 and 4 thinking maybe it was backwords i dunno...  Didnt do anything, and you USED to be able to take the ram out and still boot into bios etc...
Did you change any settings in your BIOS?
I havent even gotten video, nada... Black screen.
What is the wattage of the PSU you are using now?
Where do i find the wattage? The watts on the case is uh... 350 or 400 one of the two... The case says USB Deluxe P4 Case... And the watts on the Power supply is 115 if thats what you were wondering... Hope that answer the question

  • MS-7512 Ver 1.1 stuck at memory detection test

Been using this machine for a good year now:
    P45 Platinum MS-7512 ver 1.1
    2x 2GB OCZ PC2 8500 [email protected]
    Intel Q9550
    Asus HD4850
It has very minor rebooting/stability issues, but nothing that can't be fixed with a reboot.
But yesterday it went into a constant cycle of rebooting: it will try to boot, then reset itself and boot again, without POSTing properly.
I cleared the CMOS and now it's stuck at the memory detection test: no beeps, no display, but fans and leds are all working.
    I've done the following:
    - disconnected all HDDs and peripherals
    - clearing the CMOS multiple times (also tried removing the CMOS batt)
    - reseated the gfx card and RAM
    - moved RAM to DIMM 1 & 3, instead of the original DIMM 2 & 4 (in the initial building, the machine didn't POST when I had my RAM sticks in 1 & 3; it worked on 2 & 4, so I didn't think much of it)
    - one stick of RAM on DIMM 1
    - tried a single stick of my friend's Kingston RAM on DIMM 1
    Any more ideas?
I'll be borrowing another gfx card for testing; I just hope it's not the motherboard I have to replace.

What PSU are you using? Please list out the PSU specs and amps.
I'm using the PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 Quad
    Quote
According to the label, the PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 Quad will deliver 224 amps on the +3.3V rail and 30 amps on the +5V rail, for a total combined power output of 170W. There is one single 12V rail, and it outputs up to 60 amps! As we mentioned, the Silencer 750 Quad's wattage rating is a Sustained Output Value, not Peak. There is a big difference. The Silencer 750 Quad can reach a max of 825W during peak loads.

  • SLI Platinum Hangs at Memory Detection Test

    Hi Guys
A little help needed for the new boy
    Just purchased the following;
    AMD (Venice) Athlon 64 3500+ 939pin 512Kb
    MSI K8N Platinum SLi
    Gigabyte GeForce 6600GT 128MB PCI-E
    Kingston KVR400X64C3AK2/1G -1GB (512MB 64M x 64-Bit x 2 pcs.) DDR400 CL3 184-Pin DIMM Kit
Tagan 480W Low Noise Power Supply
Unfortunately it doesn't get past the memory test. I have tried removing one of the DIMMs reaseating it and then tried in in every socket one by one and then swapped  it for the DIMM I removed and tried the process again...nothing. Anyone got any other ideas? at the moment I don't have any more DIMMs to try and eliminate the memory as the problem. I am guessing it will end up being either memory or board failure.
    Cheers

    hi big man,
how do I change the voltage on the dram slots to 2.65v~2.85v?
    Cheers
Go into BIOS in the Cell Menu->Memory Voltage set it to 2.65v for instance, I think your memory works at that voltage, but you can see that in the manufacturer site.
    Be well....

  • 848P Neo-LS RAM-memory ?

Hi  someone who ones where i can find witch ram memory i should have for my 848P neo-LS ??

The Memory Modules link on that page will give you the modules the board has been tested with. Others may work as well, but just haven't been tested.
I didn't check to see if the Kingston are in the tests, but they do work with other boards using the ICH5 chipset.

  • Problems with adding 1Gb memory to 848P Neo

I have had an 848P Neo since February now, with only 512Mb, but seeming as some games and applications I have been running are now taking 512Mb as a minimum, I decided to buy another stick of 512Mb PC2700 333Mhz DDR to take me up to 1Gb. But I struck a problem.....
With both sticks of memory in the machine, the computer fails the memory 'POST' test on reboots (not boots from power off, but when something makes it reboot. ie: BIOS or WinXP). When I do get into Windows, the Core Centre utility acts weird too. It locks up the whole machine, whether you are trying to 'restore' it, or adjust the FSB. It won't even shut down or Ctrl-Alt-Del with it (this is surprising as I have never had to turn off or reset it via the case, as all lock ups have been recoverable).
With either of the sticks in on their own, it works fine. eg: Stick 1 in DIMM 1 or 2/Stick 2 in DIMM 1 or 2. But when they both go in at the same time I get problems. Both sticks are of the same CL according to the Everest System utility.
I have been getting help from my magazines forum, but they seem to have hit a dead-end too. Thread is here.
I would also like to add that I don't think it can be because one stick is Kingston (I think) and the other PNY, as I took the Kingston out of my second comp (same memory) and it still wouldn't work.
I hope I can get this fixed soon.

How do you up the 'VDIMM'? lol.
I don't think it is a mixing prob, as I took the other stick from my other computer (all the numbers on the memory chips are exactly the same, except it is a green stick instead of blue), and the problem still existed.

  • CL3 Memory wont work on Intel 848P Neo Mainboard? any help?

    Hi,
I purchased Kingston DDR Ram recently and put it into my computer. It worked fine but sometimes I start computer up and it comes up with a message saying something is wrong with the memory timings. I dont think it is configured properly.
In the BIOS there was an option to "CONFIGURE DRAM TIMING BY SPD" and i set that on ENABLED. If i set it to DISABLED then there are other options that I have to set.
    These options are as follows:
    1. CAS# Latency [Options 2 or 2.5 Clocks];
    2. RAS# Precharge [Options 2, 3 or 4 Clocks];
    3. RAS# to CAS# Delay [Options 2, 3 or 4 Clocks];
    4. Precharge Delay [Options 5, 6, 7 or 8 Clocks];
    5. Burst Length [Options 4 or 8 Clocks].
These are the 5 settings i can modify and in the "[]" brackets are the options i can select from for each one. Could you please tell me how I am to configure this in order for the memory to work. The Ram voltage is set at 2.6v. The CAS# Latency only allows 2 or 2.5 clocks so im not sure if thats the problem or not.
The specifications of my computer as as follows:
    RAM - Kingston KVR400X64C3A/1G 1GB PC3200 CL3 184
    Motherboard - MSI 848P Neo (MS-6788 v1.0)
    Motherboard BIOS - A67991MS v1.0081203
Motherboard firmware - V1.0 initial release
    CPU - Pentium 4 2.53Ghz
Regardless of the settings I have done so far, if it works past POST and loads windows...after sometime it randomly resets. Any idea why this is the case? I suspect its the CAS Latency. The manual says you can select 3 Clocks but i dont see that option, just 2 or 2.5

The Kingston Site is not always correct or to be more precise:  it does not state the operating conditions under which DDR-400 is possible on this mainboard.  In this cases the problem is not the modules as such (they are able to run @DDR-400) if they are put into a system that supports that.
In your case the problem is the mainboard's chipset which can only make the memory run @DDR-400 when an FSB-200-MHz processor is installed.  You are currently using an FSB-133-MHz processor.  With such a processor, the maximum memory clock speed that the system can run at is DDR-333.  I just checked the Intel Datasheet for the 848P Chipset.  That is also the reason why all DDR-400 modules mentioned in the official MSI Memory Test List for this mainboard were tested with an FSB-200-MHz-CPU installed.
The only thing you can do to get aroung this "problem" is to install a supported FSB-200-MHz-processor.
    Quote
Also, when i look at my motherboard manual, it shows option for 3 as CAS latency but in reality when i check the bios its not there (which im assumin is reason y it wont work).
It would probably be there once a processor is installed that will enable higher memory clock speeds than DDR-333.  However, the actual CAS latency is only of secondary importance here.  The main question is why DDR-400 is not possible (which would automatically yield a CAS Latency of 3 by settings the values in the corresponding SPD Profile).  And as I said:  DDR-400 is only possible with an FSB-200-MHz-Processor.
With your current configuration, the highest possible memory speed is DDR-333 @2.5-3-3-7.  In case that runs fine & stable everything is working as it should.

  • KT3 Ultra2 hangs during POST - Memory Detection

    System specs:
    KT3 Ultra2
    Athlon XP 1900+
    GeForce4 Ti4200
    PC2700 512MB RAM non-ECC
    ***Nothing else connected***
The system only passes POST after clearing CMOS.  When I load the default BIOS settings, the system hangs when it gets to the Memory Detection step of POST.  I have tried different memory sticks and even motherboards with the same results.  This seems to be a BIOS settings issue.  Any Ideas???

I have tried 2.  Mushkin (Samsung chips) with a heat sink.  The other was oem and the chips are also Samsung.  Same problem with both.
The Mushkin works fine in another system.

  • 848P NEO-S - No POST, No Video, No Beep

    I have a 848P NEO-S motherboard with a 2.8Ghz P4 installed.
The system had been working fine for over a year until it mysteriously powered down.  Since then I have tried booting it back up with no success.  When I had both the main ATX & P4 ATX connected to the motherboard it would not power up at all.  With the P4 ATX plug disconnected the system will power up, but still there is no video, bleeping or POST, the only evidence of the system having any power to it is that the CPU and case fan come on.
I have tried testing the system with all the drives removed and just the RAM, CPU and video card.  I have also tried with just one RAM module inserted and have also cleared the CMOS. I have tried testing with a brand new PSU and have reseated the CPU and also checked it for any physical damage but all of this was unsuccessful.
On the D-Bracket it hangs on the testing base and extended memory lights.  This is also the only combination it performs.
Any feedback would be greatly appriecated.

  • 848P NEO-LS SATA (Native Mode) - Cant Install WinXP

    Okay guys -
I have a 848P Neo-LS which seems to be somewhat rare on this site in the support sections.
Its a brand new board and looks very fancy. I have a lot of experience with PC's as I repair them on a daily basis however this is my first adventure into the land of SATA.
To go with my lovely new MSI motherboard I have purchased a 120GB SATA Hard Disk.
In the BIOS for the motherboard under "Intergrated Peripherals -> On-Chip IDE Configuration" I can choose to operate the On-Chip ATA in either legacy or native mode. According to the manual that came with the board for Windows XP, I should use Native mode (which is exactly what I want as it allows for 6 ATA devices, as opposed to only 4 with legacy mode - im using a mix of SATA and P-ATA devices).
When set to Native mode and booting the Windows XP Pro installation CD, it gets so far then I get a blue-screen warning me about a possible harddisk problem?
But if I set it back to legacy mode and boot the Windows XP Pro installation CD, everything goes through okay and I can choose to begin installing XP if I wish.
However I want to run in Native mode as this will allow me the mix of SATA and P-ATA Harddisks that I want to run. The manual provided with the MSI board also instructs me that this should be possible.
Its not working - what is wrong???? From my knowledge of NT based operating systems im guessing I need to press F6 during the installation CD boot sequence and insert a driver disk for the SATA controller? Although it seems strange that this works in legacy mode - perhaps I have answered my own question here and that isnt the problem?
Or maybe I need a BIOS update, or maybe something entirely different????
Can someone please answer my question as I would love to get using this wonderful new PC.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

You don't need to install any SATA drivers for your board. I suspect a compatibility issue with the HDD or on of the other SATA/IDE devices you have connected. I would do the following:
Search the Maxtor site for common issues with your model#
Install XP in legacy mode and then switch to native mode as suggested above. I have switched back and forth between modes with no trouble.
    If you still get problems,
    1. Update to latest BIOS if one is available. Most new Bios'es on the newer boards include fixes to compatibility issues with SATA devices and memory.
    2. Try installing XP with only the HDD and a generic CDROM or CDRW attached. If this works, install the other devices back one at a time and test to rule them out as the culprit.
With a recent Bios and your setup I would set On-Chip Config:
    Native mode
    SATA Only
    Keep PATA active-Yes
    Both channels
    Leave rest at default.
    Hope you get it working.

  • Does the 848P Neo-LS support celeron D 315???

Does It???, in the msi page says that celeron D wont work on 848P Neo-LS motherboard, but other motherboards with this chipset works fine with celeron D, someone knows if it works or not?

Well my mobo (KT6V-LSR) doesn't even list the 2600+ barton, but I haven't had any issues, but where the CPU support actually lists it as NO, that usually means they have done testing. So I would say most likely no, but depending on where you buy it from you may get a chance to try it.
    Good Luck

  • Cpu fan speed pb on 848P NEO LS

    i've just buy a 848p neo ls motherboard with a P4 2.8.
My cpu fan runs at 2800 rpm and there is no way to adjust the speed. corecenter fan speed control doesn't want to respond.
i can adjust cpu voltage and the different alarm but the fan control menu doesn"t want to open :/
i've done all the necessary update (bios, chipset ect.) with no results.
i've tried 2 different fan (intel box original) with the same result : more than 60°C when i try to play counter strike for exemple
What should i do to obtain a regular fan speed ???
Thx for a quick answer and sry for my bad english

There is no link between the graphics card fan and the CPU fan, what VGA card are you using now?
Did you o/c your system? Do a thorough clean up of corecenter from your add/remove program, delete all files related to it and re-download the software through livemonitor3 and freshly install the software.
Btw, do you have any other apps that's running in the Task Bar for detecting temps or anything similar to that?

    I just set up a 848P Neo-LS
    support for:
    800mhz FSB
    400mhz DDR
I installed a P4 2.8c which should be able to run at 800mhz
I don't feel the mainboard manual give enough detail to explain how to set up the bios and when i view "CORECENTER" it shows my pc running at 200mhz FSB. and when i click where it shows this on the right pannel, what's with the 200mhz x 14.0=2807 mhz?
I just want to make sure my pc is running at 800mhz FSB and my 400mhz pc3200 ram i have is running optimally as well.
ALSO, in the bios it shows the DRAM, PSB 400MHZ, PSB533 MHZ AND PSB800MHZ.
IF PSB is stands for another bus what bus is it and y do the equivalants to 400, 533 and 800 only = 100-344mhz, 133-500mhz and 200-500mhz respectively?
ANY help would be appreciated, i know from viewing this forum that there are MANY of u out there that are EXPERTS with MSI boards and setting them up.

And PSB (Processor Speed on BUS) is Basically the same as FSB (Front side Bus) only it is a different Name, So set your PSB to 800 and  you should set your Memory to 400MHZ or "Auto" if you have this Choice. You may also come across something called PBS (Processor Bus Speed) which is Actually the FSB Divided by 4 so it is PBS X 4 = FSB in your Case PBS=200 X 4 = 800MHZ FSB or PSB.....But we tend to use FSB in this Forum so as Everybody does NOT get Confused .........Sean REILLY875

When i istall PCalert4 it gives me a warning that 3.3V is down under 2.8V, and when i istalled corecenter it tells me the same and that vcore is up 1.7 - 1.8. Is there a way to alter does values? Like boost the 3.3V up.. I think it has to do with the graphic problem, does anyone know? Please help!
