848P Neo-V Bios on chip IDE Configuration

Can someone advise me on the proper setting for the 848P Neo-V IDE configuration when using only IDE devices. I am not using any SATA devices. Should I be using the Legacy Mode or the Native Mode for the On-Chip ATA Operate Mode ?
I am aware when using any SATA devices that Native Mode is the correct setting. When just using IDE hardrives and IDE DVD-Roms should I set this to Legacy ? There is no real clear rule to this as I have searched all over the Internet and can't seem to get a definitive answer.  Any advise is appreciated.

You should find alot of answers in this forum. It is similar to the 865PE and 875P Neo setup.
Native Mode
SATA Only
PATA Keep Enabled
PATA Channel Selection (Both)
Set SATA as RAID (No)
The rest as defaults.

  • On-Chip IDE Configuration for AMI BIOS ver 6.1

Please help with my IDE configuration. I cleared my CMOS that's why I have to configure it again.
    - One (1) SATA Seagate 80gig HDD (this is where my OS is installed)
    - One (1) SATA Seagate 160gig HDD
    - One (1) IDE LG DVD Writer
I tried to configure it based on some of the posts in these forums but only the SATA drives were always detected.
I know for sure that my DVD ROM is still functioning since it works perfectly before I cleared my CMOS.
    Thanks.

    Thanks NovJoe for the response.
    I already configured my bios.
    On-Chip ATA Operate Mode: Legacy
    ATA Configuration: S-ATA Only
    P-ATA Keep Enabled: Yes
    P-ATA Channel Selection: Both
After configuring my bios, I also tried to reconnect my DVD-ROM IDE cable and it solved my problem.

  • 848P NEO-LS SATA (Native Mode) - Cant Install WinXP

    Okay guys -
I have a 848P Neo-LS which seems to be somewhat rare on this site in the support sections.
Its a brand new board and looks very fancy. I have a lot of experience with PC's as I repair them on a daily basis however this is my first adventure into the land of SATA.
To go with my lovely new MSI motherboard I have purchased a 120GB SATA Hard Disk.
In the BIOS for the motherboard under "Intergrated Peripherals -> On-Chip IDE Configuration" I can choose to operate the On-Chip ATA in either legacy or native mode. According to the manual that came with the board for Windows XP, I should use Native mode (which is exactly what I want as it allows for 6 ATA devices, as opposed to only 4 with legacy mode - im using a mix of SATA and P-ATA devices).
When set to Native mode and booting the Windows XP Pro installation CD, it gets so far then I get a blue-screen warning me about a possible harddisk problem?
But if I set it back to legacy mode and boot the Windows XP Pro installation CD, everything goes through okay and I can choose to begin installing XP if I wish.
However I want to run in Native mode as this will allow me the mix of SATA and P-ATA Harddisks that I want to run. The manual provided with the MSI board also instructs me that this should be possible.
Its not working - what is wrong???? From my knowledge of NT based operating systems im guessing I need to press F6 during the installation CD boot sequence and insert a driver disk for the SATA controller? Although it seems strange that this works in legacy mode - perhaps I have answered my own question here and that isnt the problem?
Or maybe I need a BIOS update, or maybe something entirely different????
Can someone please answer my question as I would love to get using this wonderful new PC.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

You don't need to install any SATA drivers for your board. I suspect a compatibility issue with the HDD or on of the other SATA/IDE devices you have connected. I would do the following:
Search the Maxtor site for common issues with your model#
Install XP in legacy mode and then switch to native mode as suggested above. I have switched back and forth between modes with no trouble.
    If you still get problems,
    1. Update to latest BIOS if one is available. Most new Bios'es on the newer boards include fixes to compatibility issues with SATA devices and memory.
    2. Try installing XP with only the HDD and a generic CDROM or CDRW attached. If this works, install the other devices back one at a time and test to rule them out as the culprit.
With a recent Bios and your setup I would set On-Chip Config:
    Native mode
    SATA Only
    Keep PATA active-Yes
    Both channels
    Leave rest at default.
    Hope you get it working.

  • IDE drives not recognized by K8N Neo 2 Bios: Revisited

I am truely reaching my wits end with this problem and I'm beginning to believe that I'm not alone in dealing with this issue. Let me recap.  After building my new system around the K8N Neo 2 m.b. and a AMD Athlon 64 3200 939, (Winchester) cpu I booted for the first time only to find that none of my hdds were recognized.  Optical drives yes but not my two Maxtor IDE drives. Initially no variation in configuration would get the board to recognize my hdds but then suddenly, for no apparent reason my hdds were recognized but try as I may I cannot install another hdd as a slave on IDE channel 1.  If I attempt this the master drive no longer is recognized.  An optical as slave yes but not a hdd.  Keep in mind I am no novice although this is the first MSI board I have purchased.  I have checked the cables, (all good), made certain that the jumpers were set correctly and have tested the drives in my other system and they are good to go.  I even flashed my bios in the hope that ultimately it would make a difference. Since I had a working system and nothing seemed to be helping I decided to let it rest for a week. However, this weekend while installing a program that required reboot I discovered that the system was slow and it turns out that one of my drives had disappeared to XP.  Rebooting, I discovered that the drive was not detected by the bios during the reboot,  that is until I turned off the system altogether and did a cold boot. It worked.
I would just write it off as a defective m.b. if it wasn't for the fact that it has continued to recognize optical drives in all configurations.  Can anyone offer any insight into this problem? This really makes no sense to me and I'm the type of person who wants to understand.

How are your hard  drives if you have no opticals connected.
HD are definately in IDE1 ??
Makes no difference; with the opticals taken out no drives were detected.  Install the opticals on either channel without hdd's and they were detected.  Like I wrote, finally the board was able to detect hdds but put another hdd on the same channel and poof, neither were detected.  Neither channel appears able to accept more than 1 hdd period.  Right now I have 1 hdd, (boot drive) on channel 1 and a secondary hdd and an optical on channel 2.  It works but what disturbed me was the fact that during a reboot  this weekend my hdd on   the 2nd channel was not recognized and continued to be not recognized until I did a cold boot.  This situation makes my head ache    Bad IDE controller? Bad BIOS? Weird IDE cable problem? Bad PS?

  • Problem flashing other bios version than 1.2 on 848P NEO

Hi. I had a problem with my MSI-6788 motherboard. It has an AMI bios version 1.2. I had some problems with software because of the Hyper Threading technology. I searched for an option to disable it, but no such option is present in my BIOS setup, but the manual shows it. I wanted to flash another version of BIOS. But, gues what, all versions besides my present one, 1.2, wouldn't work. Please help.

    Hi All!
    There goes my signature.
I am flashing bios using AMI WinFlash (WinSFI) version 2.04, wich comes with Live Update 3 kit.
I found 1.3 version bios, on the U.S.A. mirror of msi (http://www.msicomputer.com), it is not present on the Taiwan mirror, but as i expected, has BIOS id '1I848XXX'. I will try it, but i don't think it would work. I found another version on the U.S.A. mirror for 848P-VL, version 5.0, tryed it, doesn't work. It had bios id '1I865XXX'.
I find it strange that my chipset is 848P and my bios string (shown at boot time in the botom of the screen) is: 63-1200-001169-00101111-04021-I865G-1I865XXX. As you can see, it includes the string 'I865'. Twice.
AMIBIOS Motherboard Identification Utility v 1.4 detects this:
An AMIBIOS ID String Was Detected:
       63-1200-001169-00101111-040201-I865G

       Version      :         10A
       Serial Number:         00000000
So, string 'I865G' should indicate 865G chipset? I found that this chipset comes on the MS-6728 motherboard. I tried to flash the latest version (it had '1I865XXX' bios id in the file), but ofcourse, it did not work. Is it posible that i have MS-6788 motherboard with 865G NEO2 chipset? I'm totaly confused :(.
A last question: I know that a flash memory chip can be written a number of times after wich becomes nonfunctional (at least that what autors of UniFlash utility say). I wonder how many times can i write to this chip, cos i did it enough times by now . All beacuse of that option wich should be present in my bios setup to allow me to enable/disable Hyper Threading. I hope someone would find an answer...

  • 848P Neo-LS [help configuring ...]

    I just set up a 848P Neo-LS
    support for:
    800mhz FSB
    400mhz DDR
I installed a P4 2.8c which should be able to run at 800mhz
I don't feel the mainboard manual give enough detail to explain how to set up the bios and when i view "CORECENTER" it shows my pc running at 200mhz FSB. and when i click where it shows this on the right pannel, what's with the 200mhz x 14.0=2807 mhz?
I just want to make sure my pc is running at 800mhz FSB and my 400mhz pc3200 ram i have is running optimally as well.
ALSO, in the bios it shows the DRAM, PSB 400MHZ, PSB533 MHZ AND PSB800MHZ.
IF PSB is stands for another bus what bus is it and y do the equivalants to 400, 533 and 800 only = 100-344mhz, 133-500mhz and 200-500mhz respectively?
ANY help would be appreciated, i know from viewing this forum that there are MANY of u out there that are EXPERTS with MSI boards and setting them up.
    thanks for any help

And PSB (Processor Speed on BUS) is Basically the same as FSB (Front side Bus) only it is a different Name, So set your PSB to 800 and  you should set your Memory to 400MHZ or "Auto" if you have this Choice. You may also come across something called PBS (Processor Bus Speed) which is Actually the FSB Divided by 4 so it is PBS X 4 = FSB in your Case PBS=200 X 4 = 800MHZ FSB or PSB.....But we tend to use FSB in this Forum so as Everybody does NOT get Confused .........Sean REILLY875

  • CL3 Memory wont work on Intel 848P Neo Mainboard? any help?

    Hi,
I purchased Kingston DDR Ram recently and put it into my computer. It worked fine but sometimes I start computer up and it comes up with a message saying something is wrong with the memory timings. I dont think it is configured properly.
In the BIOS there was an option to "CONFIGURE DRAM TIMING BY SPD" and i set that on ENABLED. If i set it to DISABLED then there are other options that I have to set.
    These options are as follows:
    1. CAS# Latency [Options 2 or 2.5 Clocks];
    2. RAS# Precharge [Options 2, 3 or 4 Clocks];
    3. RAS# to CAS# Delay [Options 2, 3 or 4 Clocks];
    4. Precharge Delay [Options 5, 6, 7 or 8 Clocks];
    5. Burst Length [Options 4 or 8 Clocks].
These are the 5 settings i can modify and in the "[]" brackets are the options i can select from for each one. Could you please tell me how I am to configure this in order for the memory to work. The Ram voltage is set at 2.6v. The CAS# Latency only allows 2 or 2.5 clocks so im not sure if thats the problem or not.
The specifications of my computer as as follows:
    RAM - Kingston KVR400X64C3A/1G 1GB PC3200 CL3 184
    Motherboard - MSI 848P Neo (MS-6788 v1.0)
    Motherboard BIOS - A67991MS v1.0081203
Motherboard firmware - V1.0 initial release
    CPU - Pentium 4 2.53Ghz
Regardless of the settings I have done so far, if it works past POST and loads windows...after sometime it randomly resets. Any idea why this is the case? I suspect its the CAS Latency. The manual says you can select 3 Clocks but i dont see that option, just 2 or 2.5

The Kingston Site is not always correct or to be more precise:  it does not state the operating conditions under which DDR-400 is possible on this mainboard.  In this cases the problem is not the modules as such (they are able to run @DDR-400) if they are put into a system that supports that.
In your case the problem is the mainboard's chipset which can only make the memory run @DDR-400 when an FSB-200-MHz processor is installed.  You are currently using an FSB-133-MHz processor.  With such a processor, the maximum memory clock speed that the system can run at is DDR-333.  I just checked the Intel Datasheet for the 848P Chipset.  That is also the reason why all DDR-400 modules mentioned in the official MSI Memory Test List for this mainboard were tested with an FSB-200-MHz-CPU installed.
The only thing you can do to get aroung this "problem" is to install a supported FSB-200-MHz-processor.
    Quote
Also, when i look at my motherboard manual, it shows option for 3 as CAS latency but in reality when i check the bios its not there (which im assumin is reason y it wont work).
It would probably be there once a processor is installed that will enable higher memory clock speeds than DDR-333.  However, the actual CAS latency is only of secondary importance here.  The main question is why DDR-400 is not possible (which would automatically yield a CAS Latency of 3 by settings the values in the corresponding SPD Profile).  And as I said:  DDR-400 is only possible with an FSB-200-MHz-Processor.
With your current configuration, the highest possible memory speed is DDR-333 @2.5-3-3-7.  In case that runs fine & stable everything is working as it should.

  • 848P Neo-LS Fan Control

As said - no control of the damn fans (Case/CPU) on my 848P Neo-LS. On the CoreCenter the button lits up on mouseover, but when pressed, nothin' happens (as said in manual, press to toggle user/auto modes for fan control).
Also CoreCenter doesn't show the Case fan's speed, but Northbridge (NB fan) fan's speed, which is obviously 0. Also NB temp is N/A. Also +12V is N/A. Also the FSB stays always at 101 Mhz, not 100. No overclocking done.
Today upgraded the CoreCenter to the most recent vers (1.7.0.0.), and the button doesn't lit up anymore...?
When I installed SpeedFan 4.17, it allows me to control the Case fan's speed from 2300 - 2700, but nothing more. Interesting.
    CPU - Celeron 2.0
    RAM - 256 MB Kingston
CPU Fan - OEM intel fan A80856-003
    Case Fan - MJ 802512
Both fans with speed sensors, of course.
    Should I update the bios?
    Help somebody!

To be sure I opened the case and stopped the fans by hand (I don't use the corecenter prg - piece of crap), to see that i have mistaken both fans (in SpeedFan prg). The one who varies by 400 rpm is the Cpu fan.
    Doooh.
The bios health screen doesn't show +12V at all - just aint there...
The MSI tech support sez - flash the bios, and if anything doesnt change, the CoreCell chip has gone (faulty, whatever).
Flashed the bios (1.0 - 1.9 now). No changes.

  • BUG with Memory CAS-Latency with MSI i848P Neo-LS BIOS

I have a bug with MSI i848P Neo-LS BIOS. I try many MSI i848P with same trouble : the CAS Latency is always set to 2.0 even if the memory is CAS Latency 2.5.
It doesn't depend on PSU or others things (graphics card,...).
    Try with Pentium 4C 2.6 or 2.8
But I have just one brand of memory (but many different sticks). Chips reference are VT56DD32M8PC-5 (256 or 512 Mb). This memory are reference as Cas Latency 2.5
If I set memory timings on SPD or manual : same result !!!
If I set memory speed on AUTO or 400 MHz : same result  !!!
If I set other timings, then they are save correctly (ie : RAS# precharge set to 3 or 4).
    I check timings with latest version of Memtest86+ V1.0 : http://www.memtest.org/
and of course, I get many errors.
The same memory tested on others mobo, give good results.
I try Windows XP installation and I get....  blue screens.
With some memory sticks : I have this message "memory timing too tighly",
if I press F1 to continue: then I get a memory cas latency of 2.5 with memtest86+ and then no error.
I try BIOS revision 1.0 (default) and 1.2: same result !!!
So, as I said before, I think this is a bug with the BIOS. I agree that a BIOS cannot detect correctly all kind of memory, but if you set memory timings manualy, then it must be set as you want ! ?
    Any idea...
    Thanks

    H0 Alex,
You are correct.I have the same problem with my 875p neo lsr on bios 1.9. TH0S 0S B0OS BUG.but everyone says your psu is not enough or your rams isnt  on the MSI Memory Compatability List.
why all of rams I try give same result?
MS0 boards works only with 10 or 20 ram.you don't say customer why you use this rams?
why in asus boards many os these rams working properly. This rams isnt on the MSI Memory Compatability List.but working.I try many no name rams and results are very good in all of the tests.
In my opinion MS0 bioses doesnt work good enough.

  • Problems with adding 1Gb memory to 848P Neo

I have had an 848P Neo since February now, with only 512Mb, but seeming as some games and applications I have been running are now taking 512Mb as a minimum, I decided to buy another stick of 512Mb PC2700 333Mhz DDR to take me up to 1Gb. But I struck a problem.....
With both sticks of memory in the machine, the computer fails the memory 'POST' test on reboots (not boots from power off, but when something makes it reboot. ie: BIOS or WinXP). When I do get into Windows, the Core Centre utility acts weird too. It locks up the whole machine, whether you are trying to 'restore' it, or adjust the FSB. It won't even shut down or Ctrl-Alt-Del with it (this is surprising as I have never had to turn off or reset it via the case, as all lock ups have been recoverable).
With either of the sticks in on their own, it works fine. eg: Stick 1 in DIMM 1 or 2/Stick 2 in DIMM 1 or 2. But when they both go in at the same time I get problems. Both sticks are of the same CL according to the Everest System utility.
I have been getting help from my magazines forum, but they seem to have hit a dead-end too. Thread is here.
I would also like to add that I don't think it can be because one stick is Kingston (I think) and the other PNY, as I took the Kingston out of my second comp (same memory) and it still wouldn't work.
I hope I can get this fixed soon.

How do you up the 'VDIMM'? lol.
I don't think it is a mixing prob, as I took the other stick from my other computer (all the numbers on the memory chips are exactly the same, except it is a green stick instead of blue), and the problem still existed.

  • BIOS hang on IDE detection

For some reason, I am having random BIOS hangs SPECIFICALLY when the BIOS is scanning the 4th IDE Channel (sometimes as it scans to detect the Fourth IDE Master, sometimes when scanning for Fourth IDE Slave).  Once it begins the auto scan of this 4th channel, it just hangs there and freezes.  Also, I don't know why I'm not getting access to some other hard drive specs on the 4th channel, specifically these categories:  LBA Mode, Block Mode Fast Programmed I/O modes, 32 Bit Transfer Mode.  I'm at a loss at trying to figure this out.  Could someone please provide me with any insight into why this may be occuring??  I have posted below detailed specs on my Motherboard settings.  Thanks for your help, this is really baffling me because it appears to be random...

First off, thank you to ALL who offered your kind support and help.  I appreciate you taking your time to assist me.
bejon2000 - you were my saving grace!!!
Absolutely unbelievable to me, but thanks to you for sharing your experience with the 3-pin fan problem.  Based on that post, I again decided to dig into my power connections and cabling.  I admit, I thought your comment sounded like a long shot, but was so desperate and frustrated.  Guess what, I am ecstatic that I tried your suggestion.
After disconnecting the 3-pin fan off the same power connector also feeding my secondary hard drive, and reconnecting it to a different power cable with less load - here is my result.  I have experienced NOT A SINGLE HANG-UP now in 3 days.  I will continue to monitor this, but so far I think all is well.
My last thought:  THANK YOU again for sharing your experiences all.  I could not have done it without your insight, and I am grateful for forums such as these.  Bejon2000, you especially helped me out tremendously, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

  • MSI K8N NEO-FSR BIOS Flash Corrupt

So there was an updated BIOS for my motherboard version 1.8 while I had 1.7. I went ahead and updated and it went fine. But then I noticed that my CPU speed was dramatically reduced and the multiplier was set to 5.0 giving me a 1ghz CPU. While I thought maybe the CMOS needed to be cleared I went ahead and did that but to no avail I wasnt able to fix that problem. I went over to the MSI Live Update to check for a new BIOS update and it had said that I had 1.8 version while the current version is 1.7. Just a few days before it said 1.8 was the latest. Hmmm. So I went off to the MSI website to find version 1.7 and downloaded it. To my surprise version 1.8 was available on the MSI website. I used the WinFlash program to flash my BIOS. Before doing so I closed all open applications including anti-virus, browsers, chatting programs, and so forth. But the flash was going VERY slow and it stopped with unable to verify bios. This made me scared pooless. After I restarted to no surprise my computer started up with BIOS Checksum error and asked for a floppy. I didn't have a floppy drive connected at the time but the computer shut itself off automatically. So I went and connected and floppy and looked up online at the MSI website about how to recover the BIOS. I found it and for my AWARD bios i followed the procedure. But each time it detects the floppy drive and then the computer shuts itself off. Even if i have no disc inside the floppy drive it'll shut off. Is it supposed to do this? I am unable to reflash my BIOS because of this behavior. I don't know what the cause of this problem is now. Did maybe the recovery portion of the BIOS get corrupted too? Please help. Let me know if you need any more information. Thanks in advanced. My specs are below btw:

Okay I tried taking unnecessary stuff out but it didn't help. I'm actually having the same problem this guy is having : https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=86508.0
Hmm looks like i might be in for a new motherboard or i can try the RMA process but I dont know how long that will take. Other than that...I dont know what to do. I could buy myself a new bios flash chip but they're damn expensive and I'd rather just buy a new motherboard. On another note I noticed that when I boot up the pc and i see that it detects the floppy I immediately pressed the reset button but it'll still shut down. So it's as if there is a timer somewhere. What the hell is up with this? It also seems MSI didn't release bad BIOS releases for my board only. Seems like people with other boards are having tons of problems with the latest BIOS releases.

  • MSI 848P Neo Series MS-6788 Model

    Hi,
I'm new to building PCs and I have just built a P4 2.8GHz 800FSB Machine with an 848P Neo Series motherboard.
    I have a few issues:
I cannot use a PS2 mouse it simply will not work.
With my PS2 keyboard, turning on num lock or caps lock causes the PC to lock up.
Is there some sort setting in the BIOS I need to change or is the board faulty?
Another issue I had which has now magically fixed itself - when I turned the pc on, I had to turn num lock on and then off to get the monitor to come off standby and to get the pc to start booting - any ideas?
Could you please help with with these problems as I don't have long to return the motherboard if it is faulty.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Maggioni,
Look on side on PSU.....somewhere the will be the different "Rails".... list 12V,3.3V,5V, in AMPS. IE- 12V+ = 20A etc.
Hmmm, as for Keyboard.....is it a standard 105 or 102? Maybe, it is an enhanced with extra keys? Wireless or Corded. (If wireless....try changing the batteries)
Also try changing keyboard....borrow or buy a budget one.

just got a new 848p neo, celeron 2ghz/400, and a stick of 512 2700... put it all in my computer, hooked up the hard drive cd rom etc.... and booted up, boots up but when windows loads it stops halfway thru the windows startup screen and shows a blue screen and says "inaccessible boot device"... any ideas?? a litte background.. got windows 2000 and went from a celeron 400 with generic motherboard to the new stuff... thanx all.......

If this hard drive had windows installed with the old motherboard it is not going to boot with the new one. You need to do a fresh install.
