8500/120 & Sys 9.2
Hi,
A couple of questions re: 8500/120 & Sys 9.2
I have a 8500/120 with MaxPro G3/400 upgrade card installed.
Can this config accept & WORK with Sys 9.2.1 and/or 9.2.2?
I recently added two new 9gb HD's and upgraded from 9.0 to 9.1. When the previous 2gb HD's were installed 9.0 was working AOK and I had upgraded to 9.2.2. A variety irregularities & PIA's started to occur particlularly with ATM/ATR. I am a Graphic Designer [Qrk/PShop/Ill] w/HEAVY MAC tech support experience but finally gave up because I couldn't devote anymore production time to tbrl shooting.
This is still a good backroom production unit and will be adding a USB card and more RAM [has 240mg installed].
I'd like to take it to 9.2.2 for any under the hood, performance advantages I might not necessarily see on the surface--IF I can get some assurance I'm not going down a rabbit hole.
Thanks
G3/400 Mac OS 9.1.x 240mg RAM/F&W card/3-9gb HD's
Hi, Joseph -
Apple supports the 8500 only up to OS 9.1; the installers for OS 9.2.x will refuse to work. The addition of the G3 processor won't change that.
However, there is a 3rd-party solution - OS9Forever.com Home Page. Note that that requires the use of the OS 9.2.1 download; it will not work with an OS 9.2.1 Install CD.
There was an update for ATM for OS 9.1 and later; earlier versions won;t work, and are automatically disabled. The versions for OS 9.1 and later are -
ATM Light - 4.6.2a - free download at Adobe Type Manager Light
ATM Deluxe - 4.6.1a - purchased version - Adobe Type Manager Deluxe
I'm not sure whether the last version of ATR (v. 2.6) will work safely beyond OS 9.1, and maybe not with it.
Some comments about it at Version Tracker indicate an issue with Extensions Manager -
Adobe Type Reunion
Adobe's site lists it only for up to OS 9.0 -
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=1007
If you happen to use Suitcase in conjunction with ATM Light, there is a correctable conflict between the two -

How to revive a dead 9600/300 and 8500/120 Powermac
I now have a 9600/300 and a 8500/120 Powermac. Both ran perfect when I bought them used for a day after I updated their system software to 8.6 for many hours. After shutting them down both would not restart (completely dead). I did the usual procedures: new battery, cuda reset, processor reset, tried to start up on external Zip drive with a known good 8.6 system on a disk.
Nothing! I am at the end of my know how. Most Mac owners I know come for
help to me. Any ideas on where to go from here? Please help!

Time to start isolating components. Do you have an 8.1 system CD or an external hard drive? Is your keyboard suspect? Can you power up with just a mouse and no keyboard? Can you hear the power supply fan come on? Have you changed power cords? Change item by item.
Also, how long are you giving the boot process? Check out this link:

What's wrong with the monitor?
Hi...
I have a Mac Mini and I love it! My problem is another computer.
I had an old mac computer that I mailed and gave to my sister since I didn't really use it anymore. It's a Power Macintosh 8500/120, and it has a G3 card in it. Anyway, I mailed it to her, and when she plugged everything, she turned it on and there is a startup chime, she hears the fan or drive noise, and the button light on the monitor comes on green, but then it turns amber and it goes no further. The light button on the CPU shows green, so I don't think there's anything wrong there, but the monitor remains dark.
Everything was working fine just before I shipped it to her. She's checked all the connections, made sure everything was plugged in correctly, checked to make sure that the wall socket is working, and she even resetted the PRAM a few times, and still no screen shows up on the monitor, nor the happy face icon, nor anything else, just a dark dark screen remains as if the monitor was off. What could have gone wrong, and what can we do to get it to work again?
We don't know what to do since we don't even have an owner's manual anymore, and when I moved out of state, I don't know what happened to my OS CD, so she can't even look up any info or re-install anything.
I've tried searching for a manual for a Power Macintosh 8500/120 online, but I've had no luck there either. We don't know what to do to get out of this predicament on our own, but we appreciate any help you can give us.
Thanks!

Mac Mini Mac OS X (10.4.9)Dibujos,
My son is in school in Federal Way and could fix just about any old Mac. RE PC is a recycled computer store in Renton/Tukwila. It is just a few blocks north of Goodwill. Both are great places to watch for good stuff.
Unfortunately, the malfunctioning equipment is in Texas. The assumption is that when the computer was disconnected from power and shipped to Texas, the fact that the internal computer battery was dead caused the stored parameters to be lost. That is not a bad thing, just a setback to old settings. A new battery will not reset the parameters so the suggestion was made to reset the PRAM as well.
You indicated:
"there is a startup chime, she hears the fan or drive noise, and the button light on the monitor comes on green, but then it turns amber and it goes no further. The light button on the CPU shows green, so I don't think there's anything wrong there, but the monitor remains dark."
Once you rule out the obvious battery issues, the next question is why the monitor is not getting a signal. Newer equipment that is Energy Star compliant will go into energy save mode when not actively used. The CPU sends signals and multi-sync monitors send signals. The timing of those signals will determine the proper operation of a monitor. When the monitor LED turns amber, it means that it is not getting a video signal from the computer.
Did you happen to have a monitor card in the 8500? Are all cards seated tightly? Can your sister check or have a friend check to see that all cards are seated properly? The G3 upgrade also introduces new video processing issues so having everything properly connected would be the first place to start to rule out hardware issues.
As Grant indicated, any adapter used to convert a VGA monitor to Mac use will affect the signal. Having the monitor model name and number would help pin down the issues involved. If your sister could find a Mac monitor that is not multi-sync at a recycler like PE PC, that would give her a way to test connections without all the other issues introduced by energy save and multi-sync monitors.
Please post back with a few more details about the monitor and cables/adapters.

I would like to connect my macbook to my friends viao to get all his music off of itunes via ethernet cord. Is this possible? If so what must I do to enable the transfer?
I find it is easiest to connect FROM the PC TO the Mac and just dump the files that you are interested in having onto the Mac. On the MacBook, from the Apple menu select System Preferences. Select the Sharing icon. Click on "Windows Sharing." Make a note of the address near the bottom of the window that is given: the message is "Windows users can access your computer at... \\192.151.23.171\msb" for example. Click "enable accounts" in the Sharing dialog box in the System Prefs on the MacBook. Click your user name and type in your admin password.
Now make sure the PC and MacBook are connected via a normal ethernet cable (speedier for file xfer than wireless). You do not need a crossover cable. On the PC's start menu, select "run" and type in the address that your MacBook gave you. Type in your MacBook's user name and password and you are in! Your home directory will be displayed, and you can copy from the PC to the Mac to your hearts content.
One caveat, you need to have the Start Menu configured so that "run" is displayed. If yours is not configured as such, then go to the "taskbar and start menu" properties in the Control Panel. On the Start menu tab, click "display run."

JPG Image Icons imported from OS 9.1 stay tiny in OS 10.4.8 finder windows
The icons of nearly ten thousand jpg images that I transferred via AppleTalk from my old PowerPC (OS 9.1) to my new iMac (OS 10.4.8) appear tiny in finder windows. [The problem seems to be unique to jpg image files, since other transfered items, such as folders, documents, and tiff image icons, behave normally on the new system.]
I have no problem with new images that have been created or saved on the iMac; they behave properly, adjusting from 16x16 to 128x128. However, all old (transferred) images in the same finder window remain tiny, no matter how I adjust the settings in View > Show View Options.
I have discovered an unsatisfactory, tedious, image-by-image workaround. By opening a single old image and chosing "Save As…" I can save the image as a new jpg; then the icon will behave like other newly created images. Unfortunately, once the image is newly saved, I lose important data about the original image, such as Date Created.
How can I "update" the old jpg image icons (transferred from OS 9.1 via AppleTalk) so they will behave like the newer icons, without losing old image data and having to resave the images one by one?
iMac 2GHz Intel Core Duo Mac OS X (10.4.8) (previously, PowerPC 8500/120, OS 9.1)you need to trash the current version of IPhoto, just the application, leave all libraries intact, throw te iPhoto into the trash and up date, it wil ask you after install what libraries you want to install. Your choice, latsest is always my chioce. Do all the iPhoto updates before this step, as the download could have been corrupted. Hapened to me on my wifes nachine 10.7.3., which would have been certain death for me. After the re-install it will ask you which library to install, I always pick the latest, but you can put in others as well.
Good luck, because if I lost those files, I'd be pushing uo Daisys about now.
There might be someone who knows a better wat too do this, and there is software to help ypu recover your data.(Data Resue, ClamEx)

Can't get Landscape printing aligned correctly...
I'm new to Java and this forum, so any help with the following would be greatly appreciated:
Description: Incorrect height alignment when printing Landscape.
Hardware: Power Macintosh 8500/120, 48MB RAM.
Brother HL-1650 Laser Printer, 8MB RAM.
Software: Mac OS 8.6.
MRJ2.2 (JDK1.1.8), MRJSDK2.2, JFC/Swing1.1.1.
Procedure: 1) Compile BorderDemo.java (see source code below) with javac.
2) Run BorderDemo with JBindery.
3) Select "Landscape" printing, then select "Print".
Results: Incorrect alignment of GridLayout within BorderLayout's Center position.
The first printed row is incorrect. It is split with 6/8ths in row1, and 2/8ths
in the last row.
Expected: The BorderLayout's Center position should print 6 rows and 7 columns of
8 x 1 TextEdit field items (This is supposed to be a calendar). It should fill
the 8.5 x 11 piece of paper in Landscape print mode.
Note: It correctly displays on the computer monitor.
I've tried lots of combinations of GridLayout, BorderLayout, and BoxLayout, but
I can't get it to print correctly in Landscape. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Can I Upgrade a Mac PC.
I have a Mac running off of OS 8.6, and I know it is an old computer. Is there a way I can upgrade to a newer and better edition?
<Post Relocated by Moderator>At this point and time... to take good money and throw it way in upgrading a machine depends on several things.
1. Are you wanting to challenge yourself and learn about computers?
2. To what extent are you wanting to upgrade?
3. What are your expectations from your efforts and upgrades?
4. What specifically are you wanting to upgrade? — because if you're coming from 8.6, there is a TON of upgrading (assuming your machine is old and bone-stock).
5. Are you up for the challenge?
Yes, you can. You "could" upgrade everything from your ROM DIMM, to your processor... and EVERYTHING in between, at a great expense with noticable improvements rock-solid performance.
The PowerMac Beige G3 was build and designed to be upgraded — period.
I have (2) Beige G3s, one of which is fully upgraded and rock solid. The second is a back up and a spare parts machine. It runs great, but I use the "built" one. It is super nice to have a reference machine.
I have (2) G4s, both Dual Processors. One is my "dream machine" (Quicksilver) and the other, a back up that sits on the closet floor.
I have (3) other PowerMacs 6100/66, 8500/120, and an iMac G3/400 — all unplugged.
Suggestion:
Add up the costs of the upgrades wanted, and weigh them against the cost of simply buying a newer machine.
I've learned soooo much from upgrading, mostly all archaic.
Do as you wish and enjoy.
1. Upgrade your ROM DIMM up to Rev. 3
2. Upgrade/replace your VRM (Voltage Regulator Module) if made by "Royal Tech"
3. PC100 CL2 SDRAM RAM modules: 768MB total
4. Overclock your logicboard from 66.83MHz up to 83.32
5. Upgrade and/or overclock your ZIF processor
6. Upgrade your PCI Graphics Card
7. Upgrade to a USB/FireWire Card
8. Upgrade your OS to 9.2.2
9. Upgrade your CD to a DVD-R/W
10. Upgrade your Hard Drive(s)
11. Upgrade with some speakers
12. Upgrade your monitor
Or, buy a newer computer at a great low price (used) that would simply outperform the Beige G3.
Note:
You have to know that the Logicboard bus speed of the G3 can be no faster than 83.32MHz, the PCI bus speed at 33.33MHz, and the maximum (overclocked) processor speed of 666MHz @ 8x (J16=P3, P4)
*The B&W G3 bus speed was 100MHz
*The G4 bus speed(s) were 100MHz, 133MHz, 167MHz
(*) Maximum clocking multiple of 10x
It's all in the math and how you calculate it. It's fun. It's educational. It's computer experience. It's time consuming. It's expensive. It's a computer. But it is after all... a Mac!
Good luck.

Someone gave me a Power Macintosh 8500/120 running OS 8.6. I am looking for some basic software to use on it. From the info. I have found so far, Wordperfect 3.5e seems to be the recommended word processor. I cannot find a link that still works to download it. Any other suggestions or recommendations?
Thank you in advance! You can get a unofficial patch for iTunes 1.1 that makes it work with Mac OS 8.6. Here's a link to the download: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/5401. Use touchpad only for scrolling & Synaptics conf reset [Thinkpad x220]
Greetings out to the community, great work you do out there, thank you all!
I got have two problems to solve:
1. I want to configure my touchpad to be a pure (two-finger-)scrolling device (no clicking, no mouse-movement should be made).
I want my trackpoint to control the mouse, and use the three buttons above the touchpad for interacting (Click, middle-click -> activates scrolling with trackpoint too, right click).
USB-Mice should be used "normally".
2. Is it possible to reset all settings from synclient and restore "standard"-settings in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-synaptics.conf, or reinitialize autoconfiguration of x?
Thank you in advance.
PS: I use xfce and slim. You have a thinkpad, so i suppose this might be useful for you:

Have a look a the site in general:

By the way try this:
# echo -n 120 > /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/serio2/speed
# echo -n 200 > /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/serio2/sensitivity
My trackpoint felt soo slow before...

Hello all. I have an 8500/120 with a G3 upgrade and X 10.0 (soon to be upgraded to 10.2 minimum). My PM 8500 has a Firewire/USB PCI card. Question is...will a USB keyboard and mouse work with it...or am I stuck with the Apple Desktop Bus Mouse/Keyboard???
TNX!
JMThey may work but that's more a question for the XPostFacto people given that your computer is no supported for any version of OS X. If they do work you may find that they cannot be used during startup because the drivers won't be active at startup. It's something you'll have to test to find out if it works properly. That's the problem when using OS X on unsupported hardware via third-party hacks.

Hplip printer issues. . . .
I've attempted to get my hp p1006 laserjet printer to work but I cannot connect up using 'cups' and I also cannot enter a 'root' password that will allow me to download the proprietary printer driver for this printer. I've had the same issues with Manjaro also. It's seems like it's a new problem with the latest 'sourceforge.net' hplip file. Anyone know what's going on here?. . . this is the only obstacle I've been having thus far with Arch and Manjaro.
Any help or advice would be kindly appreciated.

Getting Data off of SCSI drives - Syquest, Jaz
I have the Power Mac 8500/120 - is that a G3?
Anyway, those came with CD-ROM only and I want to somehow get all the old data (internal and external Syquest/Jaz) burned onto CDs or better yet - DVDs.
Can I move stuff into an OSX Mac over Ethernet? I've looked but can't figure out how - it used to use TCP/IP in the old days and in OSX it's all different.
I don't want to buy a $150 SCSI to USB adapter unless I have to. I actually bought the Adaptek SCSI to USB only to find out it doesn't support OSX!!!
I guess the question is - what's the shortest path from SCSI HD to CD? I don't think I had CDR software back in OS9.7.5.3 and later File Sharing
Any Mac running 7.5.3 or later (with at least OpenTransport 1.1.2 and AppleShare Chooser extension 3.7.4) can share the files of any Mac running OS 9 or later using built-in File Sharing using IP. What is not supported beyond 10.3 is File Sharing via AppleTalk. In addition, Sharing initiated from your 10.4 or 10.5 Mac to a Mac before OS 9 is not supported directly. So you will have to make the connection from the Older Mac end. Alternatively, you could install "Shareway IP" (a low-cost utility) on the older \[than OS 9] Mac and connect from the newer Mac.
You need an appropriate Ethernet connection, and each Mac must have a similar (but not identical) IP Address. On the 10.4 or 10.5 Mac: You must turn on File Sharing in your 10.4 or later Mac:
System Preferences > Sharing > Services pane > \[X] Personal File Sharing
and click ( Start )
Look up the 10.4 or 10.5 Mac's IPv4 Address in System Profiler OR Network Preferences, and write it down for later. It may resemble 192.168.0.6
On the Older Mac: open the Chooser and select AppleShare. Your 10.4 or 10.5 Mac will NOT appear in the right-hand pane, because it does not speak AppleTalk File Sharing protocol. But do not despair!
It can speak IP protocol, if you ask it nicely. So click on the "Server IP Address" button on the bottom of the right pane, and enter the IPv4 Address of the 10.4 or 10.5 Mac.
The login screen that appears is sent to you from the 10.4 or 10.5 Mac. Enter a Username and password that is valid on the 10.4 or 10.5 Mac. Choose the drive(s) you want to mount, if there is a choice, and they will appear on the desktop of the Older Mac as shared Network Drives (Drive Icon with a cable coming out the bottom).
Drag whatever you like to the newly-mounted drive. It will appear on the 10.4 or later Mac. Try to resist the temptation to drag your whole drive all at once. Move smaller batches in a thoughtful way, and you should have no problems.

I get this message on two different machines installing SQL2014 developer edition, a Windows 7 and a Windows 8 machine. Both machines have SQL2005 through SQL2012 developer machines installed and working great. I have tried uninstalling all SQL2014 stuff and
installing again making sure I was running as an Administrator to no avail.
How do I look at sys.key_encryptionswhen the server will not start to finish installation?
The links in the log only provide the "We're Sorry" message.

Tom G.Hi Tom,
Sorry for the delay. We can exclude the media factor since you were able to install it on VM with this media.
If I understand correctly, Shanky said “Abve message can also appear due to corrupt profile so deleteting old profile and creating new one and using this to install would also help.Make sure you always RK on setup.exe and select run as administrator” which
means your user account may be corrupted rather than the Virtual account. You can create a new Windows user account and use it to log into the system. Then, re-try the installation.

Thanks.

I have my Hp Officejet Pro 8500 A connected to my MAc Book Pro which is running Lion OS on a wireless network. It works just fine and prints and everything. The problem is a "HP Utility" window that pops up on my screen and says it is "connecting to device" and lists my printer. It just runs and runs and the entire thing is gray - meaning I can't close it, cancel it, or anything. When you try to click on it, the arrow becomes the color wheel of death. It is driving me crazy. I have gone through settings, I have downloaded the latest drivers, I have looked in utilities, I have opened the printer folder and can't find where this thing is coming from or how to turn it off. Please help. And yes I have turned offf the computer and rebooted.
If you are using Snow Leopard or Lion and have HP software for pre-Snow Leopard (either from a CD not marked as compatible with 10.6 or you recently upgraded to Snow Leopard or Lion and had the HP software on your Mac before you upgraded - even if you did a standard uninstall of the old software or installed new software over the top of it) you must uninstall the software using the 'scrubber' option:
Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller
Click on Continue
Highlight your device on the left pane
Press and hold Control + Alt + Cmd keys on the keyboard simultaneously while you click on Uninstall <<<< This IS the Scrubber Option, there is no button labeled "Scrubber"
There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled)
Click Continue and let it finish
Restart your Mac
Download and install this: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907
Now reset the printing system:
- Sys Prefs, Print & Fax
- Right (control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
- Select the plus sign to re-add it. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.
If you want more features, you can download and install the Full Featured software from the "Support & Drivers" button at the top of this page, otherwise, basic printing and scanning will work without it.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.
I am employed by HP
