865G-Neo2-LS and celeron 2.4

I recently purchased an 865G Neo2- LS  in combination with a celeron 2.4 GHz Processor.
In installing the pair, the D- Bracket stated that no CPU was installed/ damaged processor (all four LED's Orange). ;(
In looking at the BIOS files I see that version 1.3 was released recently which supports the 24 multiplier needed by the celeron 2.4.  Is the d bracket stopping at all four LED's lit  the behavior to be expected of BIOS release 1.2 with a Celeron 2.4?
Before I go chasing down the wrong path I wanted to understand how the mobo would react if it has Bios Rev 1.2-
( would the rev initially installed be stamped on the chip? )
Thanx for any info you might have-

The CPU controls the multiplier so I would be very surprised if it wouldn't run, but you can try a slower CPU just to be sure.

  • 865G Neo2 suddenly powers off and won't reboot

I originally posted this in another topic but I guess I should have started a new one so here's the original post:
    Motherboard: 865G Neo2 (MS-6728) Ver 1.(latest bios update 2.50); Intel Pentium 4 2.40GHz Northwood; Hitachi 80Gb hds722580vlat20;  PowerColor ATI Radeon 9200 SE 128Mb R92LE-C3S (identified in windows as ATI Radeon 9250); 2GB DDR no-name ram;  Macron MPT-400 400W power supply; Windows XP Professional SP2
    Power supply stats:
    +5V     : 35A
    +12V   : 15A
    -5V      : 0.5A
    -12V    : 0.8A
    +3.3    : 22A
    +5VSB : 3A
All drivers in windows are up to date.
Problem is that the computer will just suddenly turn off.  If you try to turn it on again it won't turn on.  Removing the bios battery does nothing.  Only way to make the computer boot again is to turn the power supply off with the switch on the back, wait a little while and then turn it back on.  Very annoying as this is my work pc so the computer just suddenly turning off can be a real problem making me lose work etc. It even caused windows to become corrupt once not even allowing me to go into the recovery console to try and fix it.  Had to do a repair install to fix it.
Any suggestions as to what would be causing it? I can only imagine that it's a MB or power supply problem. The fact that I can turn off the powersupply wait a little while and then am able to boot suggests to me that it's the motherboard.  Some capicitors have to discharge and clear memory or something before the system will boot again.  I'm at a loss.

Well the computer ran all day yesterday without dying once.  Then this morning it died a short while after turning the computer on.  So I looked around for another PSU and put that in.  Unfortunately it's only rated as a 300W but I noticed that it has about the same max power for the combined 3.3V + 5V output being 200W compared to the previous 210W.  Anyway even though it is a less powerful PSU I figure that the system I'm using isn't doing that much intensive work so it should be fine.  So if this one also exhibits the same problems as the last one I will conclude that it's the motherboard and not the PSU.
Problem is that it will die just randomly whther it's under load or not or even just sitting doing nothing.  So even if it doesn't die again today it doesn't mean that it's fixed.  Ohwell...  I'll tell you how it goes.

  • GDT-SCSI Controller and 865G Neo2 PLS

    Hi
I try to install a GDT-SCSI RAID (GDT6528RS) Controller on a 865G Neo2 PLS. While POST of the controller works fine (it detects all the SCSI Disks, says "1 Disk for BIOS"), I can not boot of the RAID. The BIOS simply does not even try. I selected "SCSI" in the BIOS as first in the boot order, but no boot sector gets detected. I already updated the Firmware on the SCSI Controller, I tried to update the mobo BIOS, but I'm not sure which one to take, as it says "BIOS > 3.x are not supported on 865G Neo2".
Has anybody a hint what I'm missing? The SCSI Card seems to need a PCI-Bus Master-Slot, there is nothing mentioned about one of those in the manual. May this be my Problem?
    Thank you for your help
    Flavio

I got the same issue here with a K8T-Master1 AMD64 Mainboard. The BIOS detects and displays the RAID-Controller (a ICP Vortex GDT8546RZ 4-Channel S-ATA RAID Controller), but regardless what is configured for bootup, the BIOS doesn't even try to boot from this (say SCSI) device. All worked fine with the old ASUS Mainboard before (CUBX-E). I will upgrade the BIOS now, and if this doesn't work either, i need a simple IDE "Boot-HDD", since this is a developer workstation and the RAID is very important.......

  • Weird 865G Neo2 PLS OC Problem

Ok, I consider myself a pretty good overclocker, but this has confused me to no end. Ok here is the situation. I got a neo 2 pls 865, with a p4 3.0 E prescott. I have 3 sets of ram I have been using to get an overclock, 1 512 kingston value ram, 4 256 Vdata, and dual channel kingson hyper X (performance ram) all PC 3200. I know the kingson hyper X can overclock pretty far from my AMD 64 overclocks.
Ok so I got this 3.0 at fsb at 225 for a 3375 clock witch is OK, but Im sure I should be able to go further. Oh and that is with the mem at 333, so memory is running 391, still way under stock. And just to let you know it runs fine stock with memory running at 400.
Ok so I turn up the fsb a little more like 231 ta 235 and I get tons of errors on memtest. So I clock the ddr clock to 266, (so the memory is running at like 312) and it still errors at around 67% of memtest. That was all with the kingston valuel ram and vdata stuff. So I put my kingston hyper X that I was thinking was going to run fine, but still SAME EXACT PROBLEM. :0(
Sorry for the long post, got any help? Need more data? CPU and RAM voltage are stock.
    THANKS FOR ALL HELP.

The MoBo model/version is printed between the PCI slots.
Important thing is to separate the "old" 865 Neo2 from the "new" 865 Neo2 P-series.
According to your description - 865G Neo2 PLS - you´ve got the newer P-serie MoBo and you should use the 3.x biosversions.
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_detail.php?UID=557&kind=1
I believe 3.8 and 3.A are considered to be the best versions.
Don´t get fooled by the 3.31a figures - this is the biosflashprogram version and not the actual MoBo bios version.
The warning text about "cannot be used on the 865PE/G Neo2" - is related to the old 865 series.
I see no need for you to go below 333mhz RAM speed, that should be enough up to a 250FSb OC.
If you have trouble with that, the reason would be something else.
To get best RAM performance you should run 2x512 ( or 4x256) RAM, in dual channel mode.
You may need to raise your RAM voltage to 2.7v ( as dcasole already suggested) and be sure that AGP/PCI is locked to 66/33.
It is possible that the onboard Graphics could limit your OC ponetial as well - Tried with AGP Graphiccard ?
You also may have to raise the cpu voltage in the end, but be a bit carful with the prescott since it got it own flexibel voltage/ thermal control. No more then 1.5v. - Also recommend a good cpu cooler and good case airflow.
You should be able to reach 3,6Ghz (240FSB) if your cpu has a "normal" potential.
Your PSU is too weak on the 12v line - we usually recommmend 20amps or above with a prescott cpu and OC.
Even more if you would get a high end VGA card.

I've got a MSI-865G Neo2-LS (MS-6728G) board which I have installed WIN XP on. The onboard video seems not to be clear. It is not the monitor because I've tried it on another monitor and got the same results. I've installed the latest VGA driver(v13.1) and the boards bios is 1.3

wavy lines on the screen?? Few things you can check:
    1. is VGA cable in tip-top condition?
    2. is your motherboard properly grounded?
    3. any other external device that induce interference?
    4. have tried with all refresh rate and resolutions?
Please let me know your findings here...

  • 865G Neo2-PLS BIOS prob

    Hi,
I flashed my bios, but now my pc doesnt boot (hangs during Early Chipset Initialization). What would be the correct version for my mobo? I think i have a 865G Neo2-PLS (it says 865G Neo2-P, MS-6728 V2.0 on the mobo), i got VGA, LAN and audio onboard.

If you got the 865G Neo2 PLS (V.2) - you can read model between the pci slots on your motherboard - then it´s these biosversions you need:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_detail.php?UID=557&kind=1
If you got boot-problems after flash - Try clear cmos ( see jumper instructions in manual - remove powercable first ) and if that do not help try Bios recovery (AMI)
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_list.php?kind=1&CHIP=Archives&ID=46
Bios 3.8 seems to be the best offer right, now ( 3.9 reads high cpu temp according to some people )
If you use "MSI Live update" utility, will auto get the latest 3.9 (choose DOS disc alternative when asked )
Otherwise you have to "manually" update to other version - Read instruction that follow the downloaded biosfile.

  • [Other 865 Series] MSI 865PE Neo2-V and Dual Channel Mode Question

Hello, I have a quick question regarding dual channel mode with my current motherboard. I have an MSI 865PE Neo2-V and am wondering if it is possible to enable dual channel mode while having three RAM modules inserted in the motherboard.
For example, I currently have one 512MB PC3200 module in my computer. If I purchase another 512MB module and run them in dual channel mode, will it be possible to buy a 1GB module or another size module, and still have all three slots run in dual channel mode? Or is dual channel only operational on this motherboard if only two of the three slots are occupied?
    Thanks.

Dual channel requires an even number of sticks.

  • FX-55 and NEO2-FIR and poor performance

    I just upgraded froma NEO-FIS2R using a Athlon 64 3200+ to a NEO2-FIR and a FX-55.
I got it all working - only after finding out that the Promise controller isn't compatiible with the old Promise controller on the NEO2-FIR.
First thing I did was do some benching - I spent over $1000 for the FX-55 and NEO2-FIR and was hoping to see some significant performance improvement.
Unfortuneately I don't see it.  I've loaded the Performance options in the BIOS, made sure that DRAM settings were SPD (I have Mushkin Black LevelII DDR3500 matched dimms - supposed to do 2-2-2-5)
Any advice at all?  I'm getting less than 5000 in 3DMark05 - and other like systems are over 6000.
If I go too agressive on memory timing the system is really unstable.
Are there known issues with the FX-55 and the NEO2-FIR?  Are there any rec'ds?

Have you run any program to test the cpu at 100% like super PI or the like?
People just dont understand 3Dmark is a Graphics benchmark and a synthetic one at that. CPU tests in 3dmark account for so little and there are so many variables that can affect the test like drivers, OS, BIOS settings, programs in the background that  I dont consider 3dmark a  worthy benchmark for machine power except for GPU performance.
Use something else like SUper PI, or Sandra, to see how much Horseporwer your machine really has.

  • New K8N NEO2 PLAT. and SC-939 3200+ help needed...

    Hello,
I have just upgraded my system with K8N Neo2 Plat. and sc-939 3200+ A64 Cpu.
There are several issues I need to resolve which are:
1- Although I change from BIOS the settings for AGP to 4x8x and enable fast writes, I still cant see them turned on from the Catalyst Control Center. Everything is greyed out what can I do? They all used to be on and agp was 8x with my K7N2 Delta board....
2- Although I installed the original drivers from the MSI CD, I couldn't get one of the network prts to install. Realtek installed OK. But other one is defined by the device manager as standart network adapter. What can I do?
3- I am brand new to A64 system so I do not know what setting to use from BIOS can you help me out, for instance there are values for HT such as x3 x4 x5  mine is set to x5? what is this? should  I enable cool and quiet, I am not intended to do overclocking. Can you give me some tips for best performance?
    My best regards.

Make sure your bios is up to date: version 1.5. Look at the sticky threads and use the information to enable hidden bios features. Disable ATI/NV speedup in the bios. Uninstall your drivers and reinstall. If the information is still greyed out, download the free version of Sandra here: http://downloads.guru3d.com/ and check the module under video system information. This will tell you if fast writes are enabled and your AGP setting. Leave the HT(hyper-transport) set to 5X unless you plan on oc'ing, if you do oc then may find you'll need to reduce it to 4X or 3X. Try downloading the latest driver for your network from the MSI website. Right click the device in device manager and select update, select specific location then "don't look...I'll choose", direct it to the file where you've unpacked the correct driver and then update.
