[865PE/G Neo2] Instability With Graphics / Games

With AGP set to 8x in the ATI Control Panel, games crash about 15 minutes after playing. This affects not just games but anything that uses graphics. For example, even my aquarium screensaver crashes after 15 minutes.
Specs...
865PE Neo2 LS
Intel P4 2.6C @ 233MHz (3.0GHz)
2x 256MB Corsair PC3700 @ 466MHz
Antec True 430w
WD 40GB 8MB Buffer
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro 128MB
Audigy 2
LiteOn 16x DVD
LiteOn 52x32x52 CDRW
Windows XP Pro
I have found a solution but not one that I'm happy with. I changed the AGP from 8x to 4x in the control panel and it has only crashed once since and that was after my aquarium screen saver had been on a couple hours. So perhaps if I played games longer it would eventaully crash like the screensaver.
With 8x AGP, using an older ATI driver my games would just crash to a black screen. After updating to the latest Catalyst, 3.10, it crashes to the vpu recovery most of the time. I'm using bios 1.9 and this never happened before updating. The only problem I had before 1.9 was a couple times the computer froze and I had a colored box about 1" x 1" at the top left of the screen. I've reinstalled Windows XP though and haven't had that problem since.
I've changed my memory voltage to 2.8 and vcore to 1.6. AGP is 1.6 volts and locked at 66/33. Temps are the same at 4x as 8x so I don't think temps are the problem. My Radeon 9700 Pro is running at 55C idle and 65C under load. My CPU is running at 40C idle and 45C-50C under load. Performance mode is set to slow and Spread Spectrum is disabled. HT is enabled. I've tried setting my fsb to 200MHz and memory to 400MHz but that doesn't help so overclocking isn't the problem. I'm not overclocking the video card now and never have.
I'd like to go back to an older bios to see if that fixes my problem but I don't know how. I made a bootable dos disk in Windows XP but it can't see my NTFS C: so I can't access the bios files at c:/test.
Thanks for any help/suggestions.

After going back to bios 1.8 things seem to be stable for longer than with 1.9. Screensavers still lock up after a couple hours and that never happened previously. I used to leave the computer on while I was at work and when I got back the screen saver would still be going. Now when I get home the screen is black and I have to reboot. Tonight I noticed that it wasn't just solid black. It blinked between black as in no video and a dark grey color. I was watching a movie so I didn't bother getting up to restart it. It continued blinking for a while and then my lcd put up an error saying "This video mode is not supported."
I've tried both a Radeon 9600 Pro and 9700 Pro and reinstalled Windows XP and all of the latest drivers. I've set my processor back to 200MHz and set the mem to 2.8 volts and the vcore to 1.6. Still the system is not stable and I'm out of ideas. I would agree that it could be the Radeon 9700 since ATI says there is an incompatiblity but since my Radeon 9600 doesn't work in this system either I don't think that is the problem. I don't know if the motherboard is at fault or if the problem lies in a faulty component. Any advise will be appreciated. All I can think to do is start replacing parts one part at a time until I have a stable system. I think I'll start by replacing the motherboard.

Hi David,
This video card has a know problem with the Intel 865 chipset. The only ati cards that work have to have a serial # with -30 at the end or higher or they will not work. Because this card is discontinued our supplier cannot gaurantee a -30 card as a replacement. We can only exchange for a different item within the first 15 days so the only thing I can suggest is to see if you have a friend that may want to buy the card as there is probably nothing wrong with it and then buy another one. Any of the new 9600 or 9800 series don't have this problem. If you have any other questions let me know. Thanks alot.
Ryan
I have now read in CPU Magazine a much More extensive article, and they are saying that they will release more incompatability numbers soon .......Sean REILLY875
It isn't serial numbers that end with a -30 but rather product numbers. I found the info online on how to determine if your card is compatible. The product number on my card does end with a -30  so it is compatible. Also this isn't just so with the 865pe chipset, it also applies to the 875p chipset.

  • K8N Neo2 crashes with Windows 98

I have set up my computer with the configuration below, and installed both Windows 98 and Linux.  In windows, the computer will periodically lock up and then about 10 seconds later the screen will go black. There is no option at this point but to restart the computer.  While this often occurs randomly, there are several things that inevitably cause it to occur:
    Modifying anything in CoreCenter.
Accessing the Nvidia tab in the advanced Display properties.
About 1 minute in to any highly graphical game.
Linux (Knoppix as well as Red Hat 8) Runs Fine, and I just recently got a trial version of Windows Server 2003, which I tried, and everything works fine under it as well.  I have checked the drivers in 98, and everything seems to be installed correctly.  Is 98 just not fully supported?

have u got a SATA hard drive? If so, I beleive (to the best of my knowledge) that Windows 98 wouldn't support a SATA hard drive very well

  • Oracle support and compatibility with graphics cards

I have been going through 2 weeks of hell getting any kind of meaningful information on Oracle linux 6.2 support for various graphics cards. I started with an ATI FireGl card that would not work with OEL 6.2. I am swapping that out in the seemingly futile hope that I can get an Nvidia GEFORCE 8800 to work. Either I am conducting my search using the wrong verbage(hard to imagine, but possible) or totally incompetant! I am here in one last desperate gamble that SOMEONE has gone through this pain before me. Maybe I am asking too much to be able to install 11GR2 on my server and still be able to use a Gnome desktop. Linux Mint worked perfectly with the ATI card, but alas, I could not install Oracle.
    Thank you in advance
    Dean

From what I understand, the error means that the X Window server cannot find a display attached to your DVI output, which actually means it does not support the DVI port where your display has been attached to. This is a problem of the video driver that simply lacks support for your graphics adapter.
I suggest to start by connecting only one display and verify it is connected to the DVI-1 port of the adapter. Support for DVI-2 requires support by the video driver.
Enterprise Linux should work with graphics adapters that are standard with server hardware sold by HP and Dell. Graphics adapters you can buy over the desk from ATI and NVIDIA are usually designed for the end-user desktop/game market and are all difficult to get fully working under Enterprise Linux. You can check the vendor support page to see if they provide driver support for SUSE and RHEL, but I doubt that it will work with the Oracle Linux UEK kernel. Driver software from these vendors are not open source and require a specific Linux kernel. Alternative drivers exist for http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/ for NVIDIA, but your success will vary, in particular if you need to support 2 monitors, which is not a typical server system setup.
You might have more luck using a Linux distribution for desktop systems, such as Fedora or Ubuntu. What you are planning to install from Oracle? It is easier to get Oracle Database working on unsupported Linux than trying to hack a video driver to support advanced features on an unsupported operating system. Or try a complete different approach and install Windows and use virtualization, like Oracle VirtualBox to run Oracle Linux out of the box. I would prefer to use virtualization even if my desktop computer would run Linux. There are just too many advantages I would not want to miss anymore.

  • Non Graphical Game?

Hi, I was wondering if it is at all possible to make a non-graphical game with the java scripting program. I've seen so many posts about graphical games.. also, if there is a language that fits more with non-graphic interfaces (text based), please say so.

Java is great for muds and the like...if that is the type you are looking to do. Combined with beanshell (scripting) you can do some very robust/dynamic things.

  • Problem with video games

    Hi all,
I have a problem with video games on Windows 8.1.
On my Windows 7 I could play all games without any problems.
Now I installed Windows 8.1 and I have problems with running video games: lower FPS, game breakdowns and sometimes even texture problems inside the game.
I tried to reinstall both Windows and Graphic drivers. I tried several versions of drivers.
I have Radeon HD 6870 and AMD Phenom II X4 955, SSD disk, 12 GB RAM.
The point is: the same games works perfect on Windows 7 but doesn't work right on Windows 8.1.
Can you, please, tell me if is there any other solution except going back to Windows 7 ?

    Hi,
Please verify if these games are compatible with Windows 8.1.
If yes, please download and install the proper version of game file and driver.

  • Trouble with graphics driver

The driver in question is the Intel(R) HD Graphics family one (according to the Device Manager)
So what's been happening is I've been playing a Java based browser game. Occasionally the display will flicker with the message "Display driver stopped working and has recovered." Other times, instead of a simple flicker, the whole thing will stop working and the page must be restarted.
I tried searching the internet and trying out solutions with the game itself (it has 2 different display settings, OpenGL and DirectX. The problem appears on both). I was told it was almost certainly a problem with the driver.
I searched around the Intel website and according to some stuff I found, I have to find out what's going on with the computer itself as the drivers get altered by the manufacturers.
    Here's some technical info:
    Lenovo Thinkpad t440s
    Windows 8.1
    Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4200U CPU @ 1.600GHz 2.30GHz
    6GB RAM (5.69 Usable)
    64-bit OS
A note: It only occurs on that one game, though I only really use low-intensity Java applications, so there may be other situations it could occur.
If anyone can offer any solutions, I'd appreciate it. It gets annoying.

    Hi Arot6,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
Have you checked with latest graphic driver which was released last month only?
Uninstall the current version restart the system and download the latest version from the below link and run the installation file.

  • MSI K8T Neo2 issue with SATA drives....

I have a K8T Neo2 motherboard, with a 3700+ San Diego core, running Windows XP Service Pack 2. I don't have the version with the Promise SATA Raid - using the VIA SATA RAID. I am using the latest BIOS (according to the Live Monitor).
The machine was set up (the OS installed) on an IDE 40 gig drive. All was fine, but I noticed that my machine lagged at times (mostly games, under heavy disk load) so I decided to get a couple of Seagate 250 gig drives (they have NCQ, which I know is not supported by this MB, but they were on sale, and I'd read that the drive should still work ok).
I attached the drives, and enabled SATA in the bios. The machine boots fine. I created a single 500 gig striped array using the two new drives. Windows XP sees the array fine, but that I have to initialize it.
Every time I initialize it I get an error that says, "An error has occured" and tells me to check the event log (nothing there), and to either restart the Disk Manager or reboot my computer. The OS actually locks up a few times when I'm doing this (the mouse-cursor freezes).
I've tried using the disks as two single disks, same error (and it reported that they were only 137 gig each, though apparently it's a registry issue, and I used a util to change that setting, but I haven't tested to see if it changed anything.).
I got the latest VIA SATA drives from the MSI site, and installed them (though honestly, WindowsXP saw the card and the drives just fine). One weird thing is that the VIA SATA RAID is listed under SCSI devices in the Device Manager - there is no SATA category in there.
I'm at a loss here. I've searched the web, and this forum, without luck.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
*Edit* I just unplugged two IDE disk drives from the computer, and when I started it up again, it found a Promise SATA Raid controller. I thought that wasn't included with the basic version of the board?
    David.

Ok - thanks - I read through the stickies and updated my bios tonight to 9.20 (the latest).
Had some dry-mouth moments when WindowsXP decided to "discover" every piece of hardware I had, right down to the mouse, and again when core-center rebooted my computer.
Also, there was some time where my memory (OCZ 2-3-3-6 DDR3200) was being set to CAS2.5, which was kind of weird, but it fixed itself.
Unfort, I am unable to increase my FSB/HTT speed past about 205 before my computer does a reboot.
I have an ATI video card (X800 Plat Ed), and I'd read that some other people had issues with ATI card and the AGP-lock, so I got the CG-ICS950405 clock-gen, and it does state that my AGP is running at 66 (and PCI 33).
Going to bump up my settings via clockgen as soon as I post this (want to post before it potentially crashes).
Should I roll back to the 9.10 bios? Not a lot of discussion on the 9.2, and I'm wondering if it causes some issues.
Thanks again for all the help and info. I used to have a firm grasp on all the components of a system, way back in the P3 days, but things have changed quite a bit...
    **EDIT**
Seems to be a Core-Center issue. Used ClockGen to o/c to 2600, with temp nice and low. Will run like this for a bit. Does Core-Center work with a 9.X bios?
I think all my problems are solved - copied a wack of files to my SATA drives, and there were no issues. I won't trust Live Monitor again for drivers or bios - it's still stuck way back at 3.30.
I'll pass the info I've learned off whenever I can.
    Comments and criticisms welcome.
    David.

I looked at the motherboard page - they recommend 3.30 unless you have having issues (which I kind of guess I am). Funny that Live Monitor won't pick up those BIOS changes - wonder what else I'm missing.
So 9.1 fixes the AGP/HTT overclocking issue?
The stickies are great - thanks.
    David.

I think the problem is with graphics card, I trier using MSI Win7 x32 drivers and new ATI drivers. Also I many times re-install Windows system and problem still persist.
    Why is this happening?
What can be a solution to my problem?
    Please help

    Thank you for answer darkhawk-
My Guaranty Policy passed. So I tried next things. I opened back panel of notebook and left it open (for better airflow), also i am using cooling pad under my laptop.
Than I create log of my temperatures with AIDA64 during playing  games and its from 82 to 86C (gpu 600Mhz gpumemory 800Mhz) while when I am in windows idle and graphics drop speed to 255Mhz its 54-58C.  CPU is about 70C during games.
Are these normal temps? (room temperature about 22C coz winter)
I noticed that now it can be hours while glitch is to happen (playing Planetside 2). While before it happend very fast.
Can this be only because temperature?
What is everything I can do to bring down the temperature of the graphics card in GX623 laptop?

  • Problems with playing games on my Satellite L300-13B

I hope I've put this in the right forum.
I've tried games of different types and some of them just doesn't seem to work, even if my computer exceeds the system requirements.
As an example I've tried to install and play Call of duty 2.
After reducing the settings to the lowest possible, the game is still not working properly.
I don't really understand what the problem seems to be.
The game I'm trying to play at the moment is Blood bowl.
According to the games system requirements, my computer should work fine with this game.
Strangely enough, it doesn't. I've tried using "system requirements lab", and their program: "can you run it".
Still, it shows that i can't run the game even if my computers capabilty is good enough.
If someone knows what the problem might be, please help me out.

    Hi
    > After reducing the settings to the lowest possible, the game is still not working properly.
As I understand, you are able to start the game but the graphic doesnt run smoothly.
    Is this correct?
    Hey mate.. listen
As far as I know this unit has been equipped with the Intel GL960 graphic card chip.
To be honest this graphic chip ist not designed for gaming purposes!!!
Its a common graphic chip which can be used for a common office purposes but its not designed for gaming!
So you will get the game running but dont expect too much

  • Satellite L870-16C -display problems with some games

    Hi,
I've bought this laptop recently and it turned out that i have tearing problems with some games.
But really not with all games, just some of them (ex: the witcher, borderlands, trine...).
So i was wondering what the problem could be?
So far, i've heard it could be a v-sync problem, but everything i've done regarding this didn't change a thing.
Is it just a software issue or could it be a hardware problem with the graphic card?
I'm considering sending back my laptop to Toshiba, so i wanted to know if this was the only solution (and if it was a solution indeed).
For information, it's a L870-16C with a ati radeon HD 7670m graphic card (driver version: 12.10-130101a-151427E-ATI), operating on windows 8 64 bit.
    Does anyone have some clues?
    thanks

What game problems do you have exactly?
    Could you be more precise?
You said that you have some problems but NOT with all games.
Therefore I dont think that you have an hardware problem
In most cases (any) games issues are related to graphic card drivers in my long gaming experience, all issues which I had in the past were related to compatibility problems between driver and game.

  • Problem installing SATA on 865PE/G Neo2

Guys, dont know if you can help... My system has been stable for some time, and then I installed a 200G SATA drive. After running DVD Rebuilder (with the temp file and reading writing to the drive) for a few hours I get the BSOD IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. Tried changing memory around with no success. System was stable until I put the drive in.. Any ideas?
    System:
    400W PSU
    MS-6728 865PE/G Neo2
    Intel P4 2Ghz
    Win XP Pro SP2
    DVD-Rom
    DVD-RW
    IDE 9G HD (OS installed)
    Ge-Force Video card
    SATA 200G HD (causing problems)

    Question for you...
    These IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL errors usually displays in the following format:  Stop: 0x0000000A (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4) IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL*** Address x has base at x - filename
Did you note the offending application filename?  If you know what is the filename of the application causing the crash, you can narrow down the possibilities a bit more.
BTW, MS knowledge base link on this particular type of error:  http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;314063
In the knowledge base, Microsoft does not mention insufficient power as a cause.  Especially since you already tried another HDD and it works, it is most likely NOT a power issue.

  • Extended keyboard no longer works with some games

I've searched the discussion groups; can't find an answer. Some games that used to work with my Power Mac G5 start up fine, then going into the mission/action/etc. my extended white wired keyboard stops working (no keys work at all). The mouse works, but not the keyboard.
So far the games affected are Battlefield 1942, Medal of Honor, Myth II and III, and the new game, Babylon 5: I Found Her. Ghost Recon works fine, just in case someone wants to say its the game.
I've tried resetting PRAM, opening in Safe Mode, plugging the keyboard into the other USB port, and deleting all the game plist files. All these games worked before with the same hardware, but before 10.5. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Thank for responding. I'm running 10.5.6; haven't "updated" since I know there are problems. I can say for certain that those games worked fine under 10.4.x. Also other games work fine, and I have no access to another keyboard. I'm convinced from its behavior that something in the 10.5.x series is the problem. That's because the keyboard works fine with those games while setting the options, selecting missions (e.g.), but when the map downloads (or other starting function) and it's ready to go, the keyboard stops working (or, more precisely, the game no longer recognizes input from the keyboard). The mouse (connected to the keyboard), works.
