[865PE/G Neo2 Series] Zalman CPU cooler doesn't fit, Northbridge Sink remove?

Hi,
I have a problem fitting a Zalman (CNPS7000B-Cu) cpu cooler - the MSI northbridge sink is too high and too close to the cpu.
Can I replace the NB sink with one with a lower profile?
( Incidently, I'm not overclocking, although I do use this machine as an audio machine and it does get quite hot.
- If I can replace - any recommendations?
- If not - any recommendations for a reasonably priced and quiet cooler that will fit (i.e with a narrow profile).

I had the same problem on my 865PE Neo2-PFS Platinum Edition mobo. Zalman's website indicated that the CNPS7000a-AlCu fits on this board, but it doesn't. The diagonally placed northbridge heatsink is in the way. I originally thought I'd bend a few of the Zalman's fins out of the way, but then I decided if I could do something with the northbridge heatsink. I removed the northbridge heatsink and removed the 2 fins that were in the the way of the Zalman. I wanted to repalce the modded northbridge heatsink using some AS5 but the stock thermal goo (some pink stuff) was impossible to get off, even with alcohol or acetone. So I smeared some AS5 on anyway and just mooshed the heatsink back on with the pink junk and AS5.
I noticed that the northbridge gets really hot at stock speeds (200 FSB). I'm planning on overclocking my 2.4C to 3GHz (250 FSB) today, so I hope the northbridge doesn't burn up. Gonna aim a fan at it and hope for the best.
Hope the "bend 2 fins off the northbridge heatsink mod" helps all you guys that want to put Zalman's on your CPU's.

    Hi There,
I have just updated the flash on my computer thru the LiveUpdate running on windows 2000 (without a floppydisk),... the flash ran thru without error and rebooted,... then i ran thru the BIOS settings and came to Frequency/Voltage Control,... • [865PE/G Neo2 Series] Installing Case Fans

    Hi,
This is probably the most silly post ever made on this forum  , but I need to know if it matters which way round case fans are fitted...
are they supposed to suck air in or blow air out ?
Feel free to laugh at my expense...lol
    bOO2

No worries. Nothing to be laughing at as alot of people are confused about airflow as well.
I'll always recommend active exhaust and passive intake over active intake and passive exhaust which I've mentioned in many posts here in the forum.
You've to see whether the fans are of the same model and if they are, I'll recommend 3 fans cooling system or4 fans cooling system.
3 Fans system: 1 fan blowing into the chassis which is directly placed near the CPU area to enhance CPU cooling, 2 fans at the rear to exhaust out all warm air immediately. If your chassis have a topblower hole, fix 1 fan at the rear and 1 fan at the top blowing warm air out.
4 Fans system: Everything will be like the 3 Fan system. Just add the additional fan near the GPU and the HDDs area to cool them down.
More airflow out will prevent trapped warm air stuck inside the chassis which is better than more airflow in.

  • Zalman CPU Cooling Neo2 Platinum

For those of you trying to keep your system cool, here's some info. I just got the Zalman  CNPS7000B-Cu CPU Heatsink and Fan for my Neo2 Plat/A64 3k and I give it a thumbs up. The 109mm size is just right - slides in just over your memory and just above your video card. A bigger size wouldn't fit.
Installing it wasn't bad, although I did have to remove the Mobo backplate which made me nervous. You can tell it won't work by comparing the Zalman standoffs to the stock HSF bracket - the bracket is too tall. Removing the backplate wasn't a big deal. It isnt so much glued on as stuck on. The adhesive that they use doesn't harden and it's more like double sided tape. In any case, I used a flat head screwdriver to CAREFULLY pry it up. I folded up a paper towel into a small pad to protect the Mobo at the screwdriver fulcrum point and ensured that the tip didn't actually touch the motherboard - just the backplate. With some gentle prying all the way around the backplate, it came right up -  just have patience.
The end result was a drop in CPU temp, as reported by speedfan, of about 10 degrees across all levels of CPU activity. I was running anywhere from mid 40's to low 60's with the stock HSF, even with Arctic Silver V. Now I idle in the mid 30's and peak in the mid to high 40's (still with Arctic Silver V).
I recommend the combo (Zalman & Arctic Silver) and don't think that it will void your warranty by removing the backplate - mine is still sticky and could be put back on if I had to return it for any reason.  Good prices and no shipping at zipzoomfly...

Hmm. Out of curiousity, how did you apply the AS5, did you spread it around at all?
I just built a machine in a Lian Li V1000 and I am getting idle temps of 40C and load temps near 60C with a 7000B on a 3500+ 1.5V Athlon 64. I am not very pleased with these temps, even if there is some hot Ballistix memory radiating heat up into the cooler, I would expect better temps.
I used the zalman backplate, installed everything (to my knowledge) exactly right. I followed AS' website instructions for AS5, everything seems to be as it should. All I can figure is: errors in temp reporting by Core Center, radiant heat from a 9800 pro and crucial memory, or air trapped somehow in the AS5. Other than that, I can't explain what I would call pretty bad temps.
    Any ideas?

  • [865PE/G Neo2 Series] Suggestions for excellent Air/Fan Cooling - P4 Northwood

Guys, I need some advice here.  I've got my 2.8 Northwood up to 3.16 (yea, I know, not great or anything but good enough for right now).
Anyway, with the coming of the blazing Summer temps hitting Michigan in the high 80-90s, my case and CPU temps are skyrocketing.  I am finding that my idle temps, once at 31C are now at 35-36C, and the CPU temps once at 42C max under load are now reaching 50+ C.  Also, this is the first time in months upon seemingly endless months that I am now getting random reboots, and I am sure it is due to soaring temps and heat problems.  The room temps here are killer, and right now are in the high 70s...
I would like to please hear your suggestions/recommendations on a good AIR/FAN cooling solution for my specs I have listed below.  I am looking for something that is not very loud if possible, I welcome and thank you for your comments!

I only know that I can't suggest a HS and fan because my temperature is higher than my 2.6GHz Northwood's since i decided to install the Thermalright XP90 and the 92mm UFO Thermaltake fan(~82CFM max.). I recently discovered an old picture from Speedfan saying CPU temp: 40C!!! Now right after boot up, I get 40-44C idle and it can climb up to 60C at full load. I know for a fact that air flow is bad inside the case but it's unbelievable to have 40C+ idle. It can't possibly be the air flow so soon after boot. The pressure (and contact) on the CPU was enough to actually see my CPU stuck on the base of the HS after removing the HS!!! A few pins had to be straightened too.
So, from my experience I think you already rock, since we have 30C(86F) already where I live. The feeling of the XP90 crashed under my boot will ease my pain...Oh, yes it will.
P.S. I 'll give the Arctic Silver a try before smashing the XP90 junk...

  • [865PE/G Neo2 Series] Memory timings and power settings anyone?

I'm not very good with computers, so I've just played around with the timings on my memory, but have not found one stable setting as of yet.
The memory is brand new and I've tested it for errors on my brothers computer and there's nothing wrong there.
Intensive harddrive usage, dvd playing and intense downloading while listening to music are sure ways to crash my system. "..........Not less or equal" is the most common error message, but there are
    many many more.
Oh, maybe I should point out that overheating's not an issue, cause I've good fans and run my computer without sidepanels.
I also like to say that I have the first generation of p4 with ht and 533fsb.
I'm sure there's something I forgot to mention but here below I'll paste the system summary that Sandra gave me.
Would be forever grateful if someone could help me out with the memory timings and power settings for my board. Setting it to "auto by spd" gives me a very unstable system, so no avail there.
I'm running the mem at 2.70 and sometimes at 2.65, since these two settings seem to be the ones with least crashes.
    The Memory installed are 4*512mb ,kingston 512 kvr333x64c25 pc2700
    The PSU is a Tagan "TG480-u01" 480w

  • [865PE/G Neo2 Series] HELP Please? 865PE Neo2 3.0 HT Engineering Sample

I just recently purchased a Neo2 865pe motherboard. I have a  Engineering sample 3.0ht 800mhz proc. I used my ES proc from my asus runnin 3.2ghz@800mhz. I install the proc into the MSI and it came up with 1.6ghz. So I tried to up the cpu multiplier it starts from rang e15x and goes to 21x, but even if I set it to 21x I only still get best 2.25mhz. Can someone please point me to a solution. Thank you.

Engineering Samples are like Test beds CPU, which means that it may not work with all boards.
Like what Wonk has mentioned, increased your FSB from 100MHz to 200MHz with Multiplier of x16 and DDR RAM to be clocked at only 400MHz to obtain the 3.2GHz clock of your CPU.

  • [865PE/G Neo2 Series] DDR Memory with 865PE Neo2-PFS Platinum

SYSTEM SPEC: 400w PSU, Pentium 4 3.2ghz 800mhz FSB (HT), Matrox Parhelia 128 8x AGP card, MSI Neo2 PFS Platinum motherboard.
Hi there. Im looking for some serious help with my computer. I have a MSI 865PE Neo2-PFS Platinum mobo and have been using 512mb DDR RAM with it- the ram is PC2700 (333mhz), non-ECC, ubuffered, non-parity, 184 pin. Now, I have just purchased a new DIMM. This one is
    1gb PC3200 (400mhz), non-ECC, Unbuffered, non-parity, HIGH DENSITY- DUAL IN LINE, 128 x 64, 184 pin
It doesnt work and my system refuses to boot up. I checked out the specs of the 865PE Neo2-PFS Platinum, and it says in the table that you can only use 400mhz DDR RAM with an 800mhz FSB processor (which I have). It says it supports 400mhz RAM, "DUAL CHANNEL", non-ECC, unbuffered memory, but no mention of "HIGH DENSITY" or "DUAL IN LINE". Is there a difference between "DUAL CHANNEL" and "DUAL IN-LINE". Also, does anyone know what the difference is between 128 x 4 and 128 x 64, they are both 1gb? SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!! I have seen some RAM from the same dealer which is not "HIGH DENSITY" and has the 128 x 4 configuration, and is still a 1gb module. Is that safe to buy? What RAM do I need (in detail) for my motherboard. Thanks!

Always useful with a complete systemspec.including PSU and biosversion, so please make one.
Can´t see anything wrong with the basic RAM specification - it also matches the MoBo basic specifications:
    - Supports four unbuffered DIMM of 2.5V DDR SDRAM.
    - Supports up to 4GB memory size without ECC.
    - Supports Dual channel DDR266/333/400/433/466/500/533 MHz and up.
Have you tried removing the old RAM and booting only with the new 1GB stick alone ?
Using mixed RAM, sometimes works in "Single mode" (see mobo manual), but is not recommended.
Running Dual-channel ( 2x512 or 1024x2 ) is preferable and gives best performance, but then you need two identical sticks.
You may also need to increase RAM voltage some in bios (example 2.7v) to achieve best stability.
If you have some RAM compability issues with 1GB sticks - 2x512 RAM stick would be safer and give better performance, unless your aiming for more then 2GB in total.
    You can also read about the RAM testreport here;
    http://www.msi.com.tw/html/products/mainboard/testreport_pdf/6728v2.0/memory.pdf
About "Dual In line Memory Module" - I think it´s the long version for older DIMM description.
Just like "Double Data Rate" is the long version for DDR RAM.
DDR means Double Data Rate RAM (in opposition to the SDRAM or Single Data Rate). DDR RAM bends the transfer rate for clock cycle. It can go quicker because it executes 2 instructions for cycle of clock of the RAM instead of an only instruction like it is the case of the SDR.

  • [865PE/G Neo2 Series] Question-boot from Promise IDE on 865PE Neo2 FIS2R

I bought my first MSI board a couple of years ago, an 865PE Neo2-LS. When I retired that, I went for an Abit 875P IC7-G. I just hated the Abit board, used it 3 months and replaced it with a new MSI 865PE Ne02 FIS2R.
I didn't reinstall WIndows XP Pro with the new motherboard. Everything seemed to be OK until I could get around to a clean install of XP. One reason I wanted the FIS2R model was that I wanted to use the faster Promise IDE connection for my boot drive. I had a heck of a time getting the drive to boot, but it finally worked. I was having a few problems that I thought a repair reinstall of XP might solve. So, I tried that yesterday.
Now I cannot get the same drive to boot from the Promise IDE controller. I saw that setting were changed in the BIOS and I can't figure out how to set them so I can boot from the C: drive on the Promise. It will boot fine from the regular primary IDE controller, but I want to use that for two other hard drives I use for storage. The secondary IDE connection is for a CDRW and DVDRW drives.
I've looked at the FAQs and read the manuals. How do I just use the IDE on the Promise? What should my BIOS settings look like? The Promise drivers are installed on the boot drive, the system will post and I'll see a flash of the Windows XP intro screen, then a flash of a blue screen and it kicks it back to booting again. I've never been able to see what that blue screen is telling me. THe drives I want to put on the Promise controller are PATA drives, I don't want SATA or RAID, just using the Promise as a third connection for IDE drives.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer. I have tried every imaginable way of setting the BIOS, but can't seem to hit the right combination. That's what I did on my first try when I got it working, hit a lucky combination and it worked.

Thank you. I had already tried the settings in the post you linked to. I had no luck there. I've reinstalled the Promise drivers, but the boot drive refuses to go past the Windows flash screen before resetting. I think it's quite simple what I'm trying to do. I have six drives. On IDE 1 I want to two storage drives to be connected. On IDE 2 I'm putting the Cd and DVD optical drives. On IDE 3 (Promise) I would like to have my boot (master) drive and a slave drive. Rearranging cables I can get the drive to boot from IDE 1, but no luck with IDE 3. I think it's the Promise drivers, they appear to be installed, but I don't think they are working. I'm going to copy the Promise drivers to a floppy and reinstall XP with the boot drive on IDE 3 and see if I get anywhere with that.
The link referred more to SATA and RAID setup, I just want to use the Promise IDE. I'd sure hate to have to put the awful Abit IC7-G back in my system as I can only get 5 IDE devices in that one instead of the 6 the MSI should run.

  • [865PE/G Neo2 Series] DRAM Timing is too tightly, Press any key to reset DRAM timing

    hello,
    i need some help.
I have been using this system for 1 year and 4 months now. A few days ago, when I booted up my computer, the message "DRAM timing is too tightly. Press any key or DEL to reset DRAM timing." appeared before it started detecting hard drive and CD-ROMS. I pressed a key and the computer continued as normal.
This morning, the problem got worse. I started my PC but my screen remained blank. The HDD light and CD-ROM light came on but the power light remained off. I turned off the PC by holding the power switch. When i turned it on again, it was the same situation but the power light started blinking. I turned off the PSU power from my wall socket and waitied about 1 minute. I turned it on again and the power light started blinking again but slower this time. I repeated the on/off steps by using the power button 2-3times. Finally, I tried pressing a few keys on my keyboard and the power light stopped blinking and remained green. I turned the PC on/off again and this time, it succeded in booting up.
And the DRAM messge appeared again.
I was like trying to start a car on a cold day... only after turning the key a few times did the engine start....
I've no idea what is happening here.
    My specs are:
    Intel P4 3.0C GHZ L2 512KB, FSB 800MHZ, 478 PIN
    2x PC400 512MB DDR CL2.5

  • [865PE/G Neo2 Series] 865 PE Motherboard problem?

I have MSI 865 PE neo 2 MB,intel pentium 4 2,6C HT,and recently I have flashed it's bios with a new one,the new bios said that it can reduce the CPU temperature.I have flashed it carefully, follow the faqs and everything seems alright. The problem is I used corsair cmx-256C2,the reference say that it's can run in CL 2(2-3-3-6) and after I flashed the bios my memory run in 2.5-4-4-8(the default timing from the mother board) and when I change to 2-3-3-6 the system won't startup,it says the timing is too tight .I didn't find this problem with my old bios, and I doesn't want to change back the bios to the old one, because the temperature differences is to high(with old bios CPU idle=47 degrees, new bios = 38 degrees)
Anyone know how to solve the problem?
    Thx

So the new bios did'nt change the CPU temperature but just only correct the temperature report?oh my....
I flashed it using Live Update 3,and I am forgot to save my old bios,so where I can find the old bios for my MB.It seems the MSI website didn't provide it.
And why did MSI releasing new bios while stil have defect on it to the customer?it can make unexperience user (including me) dissapointed when knowing it.
Oh by the way,I bought the MB about 2 years ago and I am satisfy with the performance and stability( I am using it about 21 hours a day),and I still planed to use it.
And why my Mb didn't have onboard lan,I saw in the website the other had.I have added it later and cost me $10.

  • [865PE/G Neo2 Series] RAID 1 on 865 NEO2-LS

    Hi.
I'd llike to know if it is possible to configure RAID 1 on MSI 865PE Neo2-LS. Originally I think it wasn't possible but on the bios updates there is this note (version 1.5, updated on 2003-9-8): "Add Intel ICH5 RAID1 function."
So does anyone know if it is possible? If so, can you give me a link on how to or any kind of hints?
    Thank you.

The LS uses the ICH5 chipset. The ICH5R is required for raid. The note refers that the original bios was raid 0 only.
You can always buy a PCI SATA raid card.
