[865PE Neo2-PFS ] - No Boot Media

ive got everything installed and when I put in my XP Cd, I get a black screen with a blinking _ and nothing happens. Is there something im not doing or someing ive done wrong??
Thanks for your help

You can flash from anything, but flashing from a floppy is dangerous. You can boot from a USB stick and flash from it. You can boot from a Win98/ME cd and flash from a ram drive. There is a link in my signature for booting from a USB stick.
This will show how to flash from a cd:
Go to this thread. Download the zip file and burn the iso image on it to a cd. If you don't have software for burning ISO images there is a link in my signature to a free one.
Download the bios and flash program from the motherboard page and put in a directory on your hard drive.
Put the CD in the tray, reboot, and press the F11 key to select the cd drive to boot from. The cd drive becomes a:, c: is a ramdrive, and your c: drive shows up as d:, etc.
Change to c: (the ramdrive)
Copy the flash program and bios image from d: (your 'real' c: drive)
Flash away.

  • [865PE/G Neo2 Series] DDR Memory with 865PE Neo2-PFS Platinum

SYSTEM SPEC: 400w PSU, Pentium 4 3.2ghz 800mhz FSB (HT), Matrox Parhelia 128 8x AGP card, MSI Neo2 PFS Platinum motherboard.
Hi there. Im looking for some serious help with my computer. I have a MSI 865PE Neo2-PFS Platinum mobo and have been using 512mb DDR RAM with it- the ram is PC2700 (333mhz), non-ECC, ubuffered, non-parity, 184 pin. Now, I have just purchased a new DIMM. This one is
    1gb PC3200 (400mhz), non-ECC, Unbuffered, non-parity, HIGH DENSITY- DUAL IN LINE, 128 x 64, 184 pin
It doesnt work and my system refuses to boot up. I checked out the specs of the 865PE Neo2-PFS Platinum, and it says in the table that you can only use 400mhz DDR RAM with an 800mhz FSB processor (which I have). It says it supports 400mhz RAM, "DUAL CHANNEL", non-ECC, unbuffered memory, but no mention of "HIGH DENSITY" or "DUAL IN LINE". Is there a difference between "DUAL CHANNEL" and "DUAL IN-LINE". Also, does anyone know what the difference is between 128 x 4 and 128 x 64, they are both 1gb? SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!! I have seen some RAM from the same dealer which is not "HIGH DENSITY" and has the 128 x 4 configuration, and is still a 1gb module. Is that safe to buy? What RAM do I need (in detail) for my motherboard. Thanks!

Always useful with a complete systemspec.including PSU and biosversion, so please make one.
Can´t see anything wrong with the basic RAM specification - it also matches the MoBo basic specifications:
    - Supports four unbuffered DIMM of 2.5V DDR SDRAM.
    - Supports up to 4GB memory size without ECC.
    - Supports Dual channel DDR266/333/400/433/466/500/533 MHz and up.
Have you tried removing the old RAM and booting only with the new 1GB stick alone ?
Using mixed RAM, sometimes works in "Single mode" (see mobo manual), but is not recommended.
Running Dual-channel ( 2x512 or 1024x2 ) is preferable and gives best performance, but then you need two identical sticks.
You may also need to increase RAM voltage some in bios (example 2.7v) to achieve best stability.
If you have some RAM compability issues with 1GB sticks - 2x512 RAM stick would be safer and give better performance, unless your aiming for more then 2GB in total.
    You can also read about the RAM testreport here;
    http://www.msi.com.tw/html/products/mainboard/testreport_pdf/6728v2.0/memory.pdf
About "Dual In line Memory Module" - I think it´s the long version for older DIMM description.
Just like "Double Data Rate" is the long version for DDR RAM.
DDR means Double Data Rate RAM (in opposition to the SDRAM or Single Data Rate). DDR RAM bends the transfer rate for clock cycle. It can go quicker because it executes 2 instructions for cycle of clock of the RAM instead of an only instruction like it is the case of the SDR.

  • Core voltage stability on 865PE Neo2 PFS

I've just installed one of the new P-series NEO-2 MOBO's. Nice piece of work, although it seems there is still some work left to be done. Definite problems (although not serious) in Core center (althoug other posts indicate this may be indiginous to core center itself..)
More serious though is a reading of the processor core voltage.
I'm using a Celery 2.6, OC'd to 3.25G, FSB 125. Had to raise core voltage to 1.6V to get there, lower voltage led to crashes as low as FSB 104...
Recently, I looked at a scan of the core voltage (provided by Speedfan):
The problem lies in the fact that during disk access and/or high processor load, the core voltage drops as much as 90 mV, bringing it back to its default setting (spikes in graph, longer drop was writing DVD, CPU benchmark has similar result).
If it does this at 1.5V, I can understand the crashes.
I get the impression this board could do MUCH better with more stable voltage regulation.
Anyone seeing similar behaviour in other Neo2-boards? Am I missing a setting?(core-cell may be intervening) It's hard to imagine the PSU can't hack it.. 12V level is rock solid.
    System: MSI 865PE Neo2 PFS, Celeron 2.6G @ 3.25G (125 FSB)
                 1x corsair 3200 512MB @ 333
                 POV 5600 VIVO
                 WD800BB 80GB
    PSU:      HEC 350 VD-PT (3.3V@28A, 5V@33A, 12V@15A)

I'm not worrying. Just a bit surprised we all make a bug fuzz about overclocking, increasing core voltage by 25 mV at a time, and suddenly ignoring it all and "accepting" 70 mV drops if we need processing power...
If the voltage regulator would be more robust, it would be able to maintain the Vcore to (much?) higher power ratings.
This board drops by roughly 70 mV, constituting 3 notches on the voltage setting tab.
I went up to 1.6V, and what I actually get is 1.52.....
To have 1.6 available under all conditions, I'd need to set to 1.7 (yes, I've tried), which is over the top for "normal" overclocking (not to mention considerably higher temperatures).
Anyway, I'd like to know what other boards are doing regarding Vcore stability. Anyone out there with additional data?
Maybe a new target for modifications?  (if it's worth it...)

  • My "MSI 865PE Neo2-PFS Platinum" Is not working

I have an MSI 865PE Neo2-PFS Platinum and it has stopped working properly, I'm fairly sure that the problem is coming from the motherboard however I would like another person opinion.
Basically everytime i try to play a game it works for about 5 seconds then comes up with a bluse screen telling me to check Windows has needed to shut down because there has been an error and that it could be caused by drivers or that I need to disable BIOS caching and shadowing
So far I have tried disableing BIOS caching and shadowing. Changing the RAM around and using different modules. I have formatted the Hard Drive. Tried using a different graphics card. Reinstalled the BIOS. Uninstalled all the drivers and tried different ones.
None of this has made any difference.

Since you already have reformated/made a fresh OS install, here´s some things you can try…….
    - Set dram voltage to 2.7v in bios
    - Use Driver Cleaner when uninstalling VGA drivers
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3214.html
    - Install latest IntelInf driver
    http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/Product_Filter.asp?ProductID=816
    - DirectX
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=0A9B6820-BFBB-4799-9908-D418CDEAC197&displaylang=en
    - Install Nvidia VGA drivers
    If that don´t help……………
    - Try another VGA card
    - List 3,3v+12v amps on PSU

  • 865PE Neo2-PFS Platinum and PCI-e

    Hello,
I am using a 865PE Neo2-PFS Platinum atm, with an AGP slot GFX card. (9800 pro).
I want to upgrade to PCI-e and want a few pointers for a decent socket 478 board that is PCI-e ready. I don't want to have to change my CPU.
    many thanx.

    Indeed...
I was just pointing out that even the fastest agp card is lots slower then a midrage pci-e card.
I still think any upgrade to the agp system is a waste of money. CPU limitation  ... 478 P4's rly aren't fast enough to feed modern gpu's
In case he still wants a agp card
the 7800GS is the obvious choise, and you might want to check out albatron's 7600GS agp card.
EDIT: this socket 478 asrock board has a pcie slot http://www.asrock.com/product/P4Dual-915GL.htm (don't forget to read the VGA card compatibility list on that page)

  • 865PE Neo2 LS no boot after BIOS update

    Hi
I just updated my AMI BIOS from 1.0 to 1.3 for my 865PE Neo2 LS using the method described in the BIOS support page for NTFS file system. Now my PC wont boot.
I was extremely careful to follow all the instructions on the support page....and i did wait untill I got the "flash complete" message. I dont know what i did wrong
any idea how I can get this to boot again?
is my motherboard basically worthless now?

well I tried this method to get my BIOS to work
    Quote
    per the msi website:
    BIOS Recovery Feature
    For AMI BIOS
    1. Rename the desired AMI BIOS file to AMIBOOT.ROM and save it on a floppy disk. e.g. Rename A569MS23.ROM to AMIBOOT.ROM
    2. Insert this floppy disk in the floppy drive. Turn On the system and press and hold Ctrl-Home to force update. It will read the AMIBOOT.ROM file and recover the BIOS from the A drive.
    3. When 4 beeps are heard you may remove the floppy disk and restart the computer.
    didnt help me
does anyone from MSI look at these forums? ...or is this just were customers exchange info?

  • 865PE Neo2-LS not booting consistently

When booting up, my computer sometimes stops. It's always on the same stage. When the table is showing that gives you all kinds of information (irq's, memory etc). Before it starts searching for the boot devices (Floppy, CD, HD).
It's not always, but sometimes 2 to 3 times in a row and sometimes not.
All leds on the D-bracket are green.
    Please help  :( .

That has been happening to me as well. I took my MB back for a replacement when stuff starting going down hill in addition to that.
It seemed like the MB was not talking to the HD.

  • [865PE NEO2 PFISR] Won't boot with added memory

Recently I upgraded a few items on my PC which has been running fine for 18 months or so. I changed out the video card and bought double the memory of the same brand and type it had in it. I went from 1gig (2 sticks) and added two more sticks. But now it won't boot. The power is on but no output whatsoever.
I RMA'd the memory thinking that might be the problem but it's the same with the new set. I tried all sorts of memory/slot combos. Basically, the new memory works fine if you swap it out in bank A with the old stuff. That's how it's running right now, so I know all of the sticks are good. I can take a third and put it in either slot bank B and it'll boot, but obviously not run properly. But any combination of these four sticks and the system won't boot!
    Please help!
    I'm running this system:
    Win XP (SP1 I believe)
    865PE NEO2 PFISR
    P4/3.0CGHz, 800M 478P/512K HT
    DDR Corsair 512MB X4 (400)
Dual 80gb samsung HDs running SATA
    Sapphire X800GTO 256M video card
    Antec Sonata case
    TruePower 380Watt ATX12V

What brand, model, and speed are the RAM sticks. Did you check your Test Report booklet which came with the mobo. If you can't find it, you can go to the MSI website and look for your MOBO and get the test report that way. Some brands/models will that have been tested are shown in the report to be okay in all 4 slots, some only test okay in 2 or 3. Check this report and if it is one of the brands/model/speed tested you will see how it fared. It may well be you the MOBO doesn't like your RAM in 3 or 4 slots.
Maybe I missed it, but did you try each slot with only one stick at a time? You may also have a bad RAM slot.

  • [865PE/G Neo2 Series] Question-boot from Promise IDE on 865PE Neo2 FIS2R

I bought my first MSI board a couple of years ago, an 865PE Neo2-LS. When I retired that, I went for an Abit 875P IC7-G. I just hated the Abit board, used it 3 months and replaced it with a new MSI 865PE Ne02 FIS2R.
I didn't reinstall WIndows XP Pro with the new motherboard. Everything seemed to be OK until I could get around to a clean install of XP. One reason I wanted the FIS2R model was that I wanted to use the faster Promise IDE connection for my boot drive. I had a heck of a time getting the drive to boot, but it finally worked. I was having a few problems that I thought a repair reinstall of XP might solve. So, I tried that yesterday.
Now I cannot get the same drive to boot from the Promise IDE controller. I saw that setting were changed in the BIOS and I can't figure out how to set them so I can boot from the C: drive on the Promise. It will boot fine from the regular primary IDE controller, but I want to use that for two other hard drives I use for storage. The secondary IDE connection is for a CDRW and DVDRW drives.
I've looked at the FAQs and read the manuals. How do I just use the IDE on the Promise? What should my BIOS settings look like? The Promise drivers are installed on the boot drive, the system will post and I'll see a flash of the Windows XP intro screen, then a flash of a blue screen and it kicks it back to booting again. I've never been able to see what that blue screen is telling me. THe drives I want to put on the Promise controller are PATA drives, I don't want SATA or RAID, just using the Promise as a third connection for IDE drives.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer. I have tried every imaginable way of setting the BIOS, but can't seem to hit the right combination. That's what I did on my first try when I got it working, hit a lucky combination and it worked.

Thank you. I had already tried the settings in the post you linked to. I had no luck there. I've reinstalled the Promise drivers, but the boot drive refuses to go past the Windows flash screen before resetting. I think it's quite simple what I'm trying to do. I have six drives. On IDE 1 I want to two storage drives to be connected. On IDE 2 I'm putting the Cd and DVD optical drives. On IDE 3 (Promise) I would like to have my boot (master) drive and a slave drive. Rearranging cables I can get the drive to boot from IDE 1, but no luck with IDE 3. I think it's the Promise drivers, they appear to be installed, but I don't think they are working. I'm going to copy the Promise drivers to a floppy and reinstall XP with the boot drive on IDE 3 and see if I get anywhere with that.
The link referred more to SATA and RAID setup, I just want to use the Promise IDE. I'd sure hate to have to put the awful Abit IC7-G back in my system as I can only get 5 IDE devices in that one instead of the 6 the MSI should run.

  • ~HELP!~ WINXP WON'T BOOT ON 865PE NEO2-LS

Hello, I just purchased the MSI 865PE NEO2-LS and an MSI FX5600. I wrote zeros to my hard drive and when I try to boot from the Windows XP CD or floppy this is the result:
"Line 613 of the INF file i386   xtsetup.sif is invalid Setup cannot continue."
Each time I reboot the line number is different (734,575,2983...) I tried two different copies of XP and Red Hat Linux, None would load. Please Help! Any suggestions would be greatly apprieciated. Thank You.

  • MSI 865PE NEO2-V booting problems [Solved]

Hi.  I've been building a new computer and am seeing some weird stuff.
    System Specs:
    -P4 3 GHz Socket 478
    -MSI 865PE NEO2-V -V22 http://www.saveateagle.com/865pe-ne...EO2-V&ovtac=CMP
    -128mb ATI Radeon 9800 pro
    -120 GB Western Digital
    -1GB dual channel DDR400 PC3200 Corsair
    -Ultra 500w X-Connect:
    http://www.absoluteinsight.net/2456
    -DRW 1108IM ¡V DVD+/-RW Drive
    http://www.btc.com.tw/english/2-2-dvd_rw.htm
-Generic Floppy Drive (sentimental reasons )
The system seems to be running (ie no post beeps) but I'm not getting any signal sent to the monitor. I've tried running it out of the case with only the video card connected to the mobo, cleared cmos via battery and jumper settings, and the same thing still happens.
Anyway, I've been talking with other guys on another forum too, but we haven't gtten it to work.
    http://www.techsupportforum.com/showthread.php?t=53044
I'm going to try clearing the cmos again because apparently the battery must be out for several minutes, whereas I roughly did one minute. If the mobo has no ram connected, there should be post beeps, right? If so, I better check the case speaker connection again.
    Thanks for the help.

I tried removing my RAM and powering -suprisingly no beeps . So make sure its not a faulty RAM, try another one

  • New 865PE Neo2-P freezes

Hi all, thanks for any help in advance.
I'm putting together a new P4 system built around the 865PE Neo2-P motherboard.
    Processor: P4 (prescott) 3.0 GHZ
Memory:  2x 256MB Corsair Value Select PC3200 (if you need the model #, ask)
    Motherboard BIOS version: 3.A0
Hard Drive: WD 7200 RPM, 80 GB
Video card: old, generic PCI video card.
OS windows XP, no updates (no chance--see below)
The computer locks up predictably at several points.
When I do the INF update from the CD-ROM (it worked once or twice).
When I do the INF update through MSI's Live Update 3
Attempting to download WinXP features to enable Windows Update to do its job
It will occasionally lock up when working with start menu options.
It also locked several times while booting from the WinXP CD prior to installing XP.
Doing the INF update off the CD always brings up the System Properties window and if the system is going to lock, it seems to be locking while trying to bring up the window.  I don't know if the Live Update 3 is doing the same thing or not.  I never get far enough.  The net card and AC 97 drivers installed fine.  But then, they don't seem to make the system Properties Window come up either.
Windows Update: The computer downloads the Windows Update program itself just fine, but when I try to get the actual updates, it wants to get additional components.  Once I click the button to tell it to go ahead, the computer locks.
    Troubleshooting
    Memory Swap:
I pulled memory from a functioning computer and replaced the Corsair chips.  No change.
I reduced memory to one memory SIMM in one bank (bank 0)  That got me thoughrough the INF update from the CD but ran aground on Windows Updste and Live Update 3.
BIOS: Is the current version according to MSI's website and Live Update 3.
Disabled L1, L2 caches on the Processor: slowed the computer to a crawl, but it had the same problem when it came to Live Update 3.
Processor Swap: I don't have another P4 to swap.  Both my other machines are Athlons.

    Sharp,
If I read my power supply right, it's rated for 15A on the +12V rail.  Is 16A rock-bottom or recommended?
I have a working machine with a 400W power supply (17A on the +12V rail) and I connected the 400 to the computer.  I'm still getting the same problems.
I downloaded memtest and put it on a floppy.  It's been running for a solid hour now with no complaints.
When I was trying to get ahold of memtest, I surfed out to the memtest.org and tried to download without the benefit of your forum link.  The machine froze after clicking on one of memtest's download links.  I'm pretty sure it was the "precompiled package for floppy" link.  It downloaded fine off your forum link however.
Any other ideas before I RMA this puppy?

  • 865PE Neo2-PFISR failure

    Hello,
This is my first post here so I would write down my system configuration at first:
my MSI mobo: 865PE Neo2-PFISR (with BIOS update to V3.A since 21/01/2005)
    CPU: Intel Pentium 4 HT 2.8E SL79K
    RAM: 2GB Kingston 400MHz DDR (4 x KVR400X64C3A/512)
Graphics Card (GPU): Club ATI 9600XT 256MB AGP 8x
    2 SATA HDDs: 320GB + 160GB Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm
    3 IDEs: SONY DVD-ROM 16x, PLEXTOR CD-RW 52x, NEC DVD-RW DL 16x
Sound Card: TASCAM US-122 (External USB)
    Power Supply (PSU): Seasonic S12+ 550W 80plus (+3,3V@24A, +5V@30A, +12V@18A, [email protected], +5Vsb@3A) http://www.seasonicusa.com/s12plus.htm
Monitor: EIZO L550 17" LCD with DVI cable connected
O/S: Dual boot on Kubuntu 7.10 and Windows XP (separately in each HDD)
using BIOS IDE setup: Native Mode configuration with S-ATA only, both P-ATA keep Enabled and no RAID which is the only configuration that my Linux installs or starts and USB Legacy Disable for starting a Windows XP installation otherwise it crashes after a CD-ROM boot in the first blue LOAD screen of the bootable Windows XP.
so I would like to discuss the failure problem that I have:
Sometimes I push the pc's power button to power on and the system gives power to the peripherals (CDs, HDDs, FANs, etc) but the screen does not open at all and the front HDD's orange led stays always ON still. The "D-Bracket 2" shows at once started 2 green leds (2nd and 3nd) and two yellow (?!?!?!) or 2 red (2nd and 3rd) and two yellow (?!?!?!). I'm surprised about the yellow!!! I tried out several setups after failure like: barebone, just the CPU installed with no memory, GPU or HDDs etc, another different type of PSU or unplugging any cable (from the USBs' or the D-Bracket's to the Power/HDD/Reset Leds and the FANs') but nothing changed at all. Finally if I "Clear CMOS" using the Jumper JBAT1 as the manual's information, everything goes well and the pc starts excellent again but then, in a random time after a power on or a restart it does the same failure. I do this post because this was happening really rarely in the past but now this is happening usually (once in a week I can say) with no hardware change since a while. Thank you in advance for your time and I will be thankful for any help.
I'm sorry for my bad English.
