Whoops, don't know how I skipped over that in the manual, thanks.
Still need help with the other issue though. Just to add, it did this the very first time I booted up, I do not have Windows or any OS installed because I cannot get past that screen.

This topic has been moved to AMD64 ATI/SiS/VIA boards.

I'm using brass standoffs, I think one near each corner screwed in and one post-type near the center.
    Never think! Be 100% sure!
That your standoffs match the board holes, no more no less (those holes with tin circle around them).
Timings should be set on auto-settings. And certainly those aren't good as they are meant for Intel not AMD.

  • New Build 770-G45 won't post

    Hi,
I doing a new build for a friend, I've built 4 systems to date but haven't had much trouble so I don't have much experience trouble shooting.
This is the issue so far, if I clear the CMOS when I boot up everything seems fine, the bios posts, I can enter setup, and everything seems to be recognized.
Once I save and re-boot I get the splash screen followed by a blinking cursor on a blank screen, in other words the bios won't post.
I'm wondering if I have a problem with my memory (see specs below), I've noticed the mainboard recognizes it as 1333, I read the sticky on memory, but I'm still not sure what to do here.
    Thanks

Looks like I should have researched this RAM more carefully, it looks like it only works for AMD 785 series and higher.
    Do you guys agree?
    Thanks

  • Z97 G45 Won't Post

I've read the forum and it seems I have the same issue as others here and elsewhere with the no-post problem with this board and the Intel Core i7 4790K.
As others have reported both the CPU and Case Fan start spinning but no video out of any of the 3 on-board ports.  There is a light (Audio boost I believe) that lights up on the board.
Have tried swapping out the Ram (single stick all 4 slots)
I emailed tech support and a stock troubleshooting guide but no answer to the question of what bios version is installed in this board out of the box.
Is there any way of gleaning anything from this serial # 601-7821-050B1411219xxx
Unfortunately I have no access to another Haswell CPU to upgrade or determine the bios.

Your comment that "There is no Z97 cpu that does not support any Haswell Refresh cpu including the K cpus"  seems to be contrary to a number of posts in other forums
Such problems are limited to Z87 boards.

All new parts, except for the PSU which I am replacing tomorrow. Posting this here in case my configuration raises any red flags I don't see.
    System:
MSI 790X-G45 AM3 AMD 790X ATX AMD Motherboard
    AMD Athlon II X4 630 Propus 2.8GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Processor ADX630WFGIBOX

Tried clearing CMOS (JBAT1 jumper), running a barebones system on non-conductive surface, different video card (Radeon x1300). When I power up, all four APS LED's light, CPU and system fans spin, no other activity. I did try the system once with a ps/2 keyboard, numlock key seemed to toggle light for a few seconds then stopped. Reseated CPU, no bent pins.
The weakest link right now is probably the power supply, it had been working fine on an older motherboard but is probably three or so years old. I will borrow a known good one tomorrow but would like to hear recommendations if I have to order one.
The CPU (ADX630WFGIBOX) is not listed as supported, should I assume it is not compatible?
I am connecting my case's speaker when testing, but does the motherboard itself beep any error codes (in case my speaker is non-functioning)?
Any help and advice is appreciated, thanks!

The motherboard does not have built in VGA, I regret this choice, but I thought I was keeping things simple.
Is there a good resource for finding out what memory is AMD tested? All I could find was this link from MSI:
    http://eu.msi.com/uploads/test_report/TR10_1740.pdf
Crucial shows this memory compatible with this motherboard, but from what I have read elsewhere this is not 100% dependable.

I will try the OC switch to see if it makes a difference, I also have a Corsair GS600 in hand (+3.3V@25A; +5V@25A; +12V1@48A; [email protected]; +5VSB@3A) to try out when I get home. I will update after I have more news.

  • MSI 870-G45 - something odd is going on with MSI

Ok, this is convoluted but bear with me.
I bought the MSI 870-G45 (MS-7599 v2.x) motherboard from Newegg. Newegg listed the chipset as the AMD 870. However, when I received the motherboard, the manual states that the chipset is actually the RX 780 (a.k.a. AMD 770 a chip from 2007/08!), I checked in CPU-Z and confirmed this. I built a rig with this motherboard on 8/15/2010.
I have been having all sorts of issues. These include memory errors when running memtest86+ or HCI memtest.
Today I come on to the MSI website to do some research on the motherboard and I see that the MSI 870-G45 is now listed as a "NEW" product and the chipset is now the AMD 870, as I originally thought. In fact, MSI has two versions of the 870-G45, depending on what link you visit. See the two links below:
    http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=prodmbspec&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=&cat3_no=&prod_no=2070
    http://us.msi.com/index.php?func=prodmbspec&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=171&cat3_no=&prod_no=2019#menu
The version I ended up with is the one in the first link.
Now, I have the AMD Athlon II X4 635. The product info page at AMD states that the voltages should be between .85v and 1.25v. ( http://products.amd.com/en-gb/DesktopCPUDetail.aspx?id=625 ) However, even though the BIOS of this motherboard (the version with the 770 chipset, which is the one I got) supports this CPU, the "Auto" CPU voltage setting sets the voltage at ~1.35v - above the specs specified by AMD! Wondering if this might also be a cause of the difficulties I am having, I lowered it to 1.12. Running some more tests to see if this has improved stability.
So, two versions of one motherboard, with confusing numbering and Auto voltage that exceeds the specs from the CPU manufacturer. What the heck is going on?
Another issue is that the manual states on page 2-6 (21 on the PDF) states that to be in dual channel mode, I need to put my two DIMM cards in the slots DIMM1 and DIMM2. However, further down the page under the heading "Important", it states:
In Dual-Channel mode, make sure that you install memory modules of the same type
and density in different channel DIMM slots.
This seems to be contradictory, but it is probably just me. Does it mean I install the two DIMMs in DIMM1 and DIMM2 or DIMM1 and DIMM3?

Thank you both for your input. I mistakenly thought this was run by MSI. Feel stupid. But since you were so kind to respond, I'll post my full system specs as you suggested:
AMD Athlon II X4 635 CPU
    MSI 870-G45 AM3 Motherboard
    G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (F3-12800CL9D-4GBNQ)
    GIGABYTE 1GB GeForce GTX 460
    SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM
ASUS DRW-24B1ST SATA 24X DVD Burner
    OCZ ModXStream Pro OCZ600MXSP 600W ( +3.3V@25A, +5V@25A, +12V1@25A, +12V2@25A, [email protected], [email protected] )
    OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.
Also just discovered that there are two versions of my CPU (C2 and C3 revisions). Perhaps that is where some of the confusion regarding voltages lie. Again, feel stupid.
    Issues in a nutshell:
Computer ran fine for about 10 days. Then booted up a game and got crazy artifacts everywhere. Windows 7 also showed some artifacts when I went back to desktop. OS never crashed though. Windows has never crashed. Because of this, I suspected that my GPU went bad. Ran OCCT GPU test, Furmark and ATI tool and have artifacts on all three. Artifacts appear immediately upon starting test, so I don't think it is temperature related. Temp of GPU is under 40 C idle and highest under load is 77 C, which falls in line with what I read in reviews for card.
Now, before RMAing by video card with Newegg, I decided to download memtest86+ and run it. Just a hunch. I got an error on the first pass in test 2. However, I continued to run the test and saw no more errors. Ran the test again overnight for hours and could not recreate error. Thinking I may have gotten a false positive, I ran HCI Memtest (this one runs in Windows) and ran it for a few hours. That reported multiple errors as well. Now I am trying to run the test with one DIMM at a time to see if I can isolate which stick it is.
So I guess my questions are:
    * What are the chances that I got a bad GPU and bad RAM from Newegg? Anything is possible but I thought that getting two lemons was unlikely, and when I then saw the discrepancies in the motherboard info on MSIs website I started to wonder.
    * Could bad DRAM have any effect on GPU - as in displaying artifacts. Or would this strictly be a GPU issue?
    * A member at another forum warned against leaving voltage settings in BIOS at Auto. This is what led me to look up the specs at AMDs website. What do you think about this recommendation.
Sorry if I came off a little harsh, I thought I was addressing MSI the company and was a bit miffed by two different versions of a board and with the fact that newegg was improperly stating the specs.
I appreciate any help you can give.

  • Help installing sata drivers for 870-G45

I just noticed Windows 7 64-bit lists my internal sata ii drive as ata in the device manager and also won't autodetect my e-sata usb drive when I connect it.  I read that I need an AHCI driver.  I have a 870-G45 mobo with AMD RX780 Northbridge and SB710 Southbridge.
So I went to the msi drivers page at http://www.msi.com/product/mb/870-G45.html#/?div=Driver&os=Win7%2064 and downloaded the driver package:
ATI System Drivers for 7xx/8xx/SB7xx/SB8xx Series (except RS690, 740).
When I unzip the downloaded file "ati_system_drive_mb.zip" I get a directory called "AMD" and inside is a program called "Setup.exe"
When I run Setup.exe it wants to install a program called "Catalyst".  Is this correct?  It says something about managing graphics but I don't have an AMD video card.
Do I have to run Catalyst?  I can see some drivers in the folder AMD->Packages->Drivers->SBDrv->SB7xx->AHCI->W764A listed as:
    amd_sata.inf
    amd_sata.sys
    amd_xata.sys
    amd_sata.msi
Can I just install these somehow?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

ok, I can explain this better.
I have an internal sata ii drive and an external esata.
Both work but for the external drive when I turn it on I have to go to 'Disk Management" and rescan drives for win7 to pick it up.
    Here is my Device Manager:
See both my drives show as ATA even though they are SATA.  And I have only IDE controllers listed no SATA controller.
I am trying to get the system to recognize the drives as SATA and use the SATA controller to get better performance.
Also I am trying to install AHCI so that my external drive can be auto recognized.
The only thing in my BIOS regarding AHCI is under "Integrated Peripherals->On-Chip ATA Devices->RAID Mode->AHCI
I assume it needs to be set to AHCI.

  • 790FX-GD70 Won't Post

I bought the 790FX-GD70 in January and I'm just now finishing the build (don't ask).
I waited to buy the CPU until last, so I got the X6 1090T. The current BIOS is 7577 1.0 and I have every intention of updating it to 1.C as soon as I can get to the BIOS, but no luck there. I have it bare bones right now and out of the case. Parts list:
790FX-GD70 BIOS ver 1.0 (I know, I need to update ASAP)
    Phenom II X6 1090T
    Corsair H50 CPU Cooler
Corsair Dominator 2GB DDR3 1033MHz (in first slot closest to CPU. The box says AMD Phenom II right on it. Grrr...)
    Corsair 850HX Power Supply
It's right here in front of me out of the case, lying on my desk.
The problem is, it won't post. This is what I get:
FF,d1,d2,d3,d5,d6,08, then it resets, FF,d1,d2,d3,d5,d6,08, reset, etc. etc.
All the CPU phase LEDs light, memory LEDs light, and the hard drive LED lights right before the board resets.
Any help would be awesome. I'm lost. Thanks.

    what vga you have?
have you tried to boot with barabone setup and mainboard out of the pc case?
    tried >>Clear CMOS Guide<< too?
power cable for the cpu is connected?
have you tried to reseat the cpu too and check for bent pins?

  • Computer won't POST on cold starts

When I turn on the computer after not having used it for over an hour or so, it won't post. Everything turns on, except the monitor. The only way I can turn off my system after it posts, and the monitor is still off, is by turning off the power supply. I found a way of turning it on when doing a cold start, but its really annoying to do. I do this by turning off the PSU, and unplug the monitor from my vid card, and then plug it back in. After doing this, system will turn on no problem. How do I solve this? I know monitor and vid card work good, since they work perfect in my other system.
Oh one more thing, after having a successful start, and having loaded Windows, my CD-RW is looping, the light stays on, until I open/close it, then it stops. Any suggestions?
    Oh and I use K8N Neo-FSR.
Edit: PSU is an Antec TruePower 380. 18 amps on the +12v line.

    Hi,
I've had lot's of trouble with my system. It didn't POST either. The problem you describe is not the same, but I see you are using the same video card as I do.
My problem was 'resolved' by upgrading the bios version 1.52
I've seen quite a lot of messages indicating that it could be the power supply, being too weak etc... Personally, I do not think it is. In my view it has something to do with timing, and bios 1.52 resolved it for me.
Good luck with it; this issue is a time consumer ...

I am ready to toss this board and buy another unless I can get this working.
At the moment there is know certainty about the definate cause for your problem.  What makes you so sure that the board is the cause (and not your CPU (which hosts the memory controller, after all), faulty RAM sticks (have you tested every single stick of RAM you have in the first slot (check user manual) and cleared CMOS (with A/C power cable unplugged from PSU before each new start-up attempt)?).
A contact problem between CPU Pads and board socket pins could also cause this (please reseat CPU and heatsink).  Another possible cause is a short-circuit problem inside the case (test the board outside the case on a non-conducting surface).
