8700v: Is it quad band EDGE?

Hello,
I just ordered an 8700c for use on ATT/Cingular. (Quad GSM/EDGE)
However, they sent me an 8700v. Doh!
I never heard of the 8700v so i looked it up.. The only info I could fine on it was at RIM's EU webpage:
http://eu.blackberry.com/eng/devices/device-detail.jsp?navId=H0,C63,P102#tab_tab_specification
There it says it's only dual-band, but is that actually true, or do they only bother to write that info for EU users.
This also confilts with what is says on the 8700v "Features" tab:
"Roam internationally throughout North America, Europe and Asia Pacific with Quad-Band network support on 850/900/1800/1900 MHz GSM™/GPRS and EDGE networks*"
So, which page is correct?
Is there anyway to tell via the menus if this is a quad-band EDGE phone? I don't yet have a SIM Card, and won't for a few days.
(Just trying to avoid having to ship this unit back and find a new vendor...)
Thank you,

Just to clarify:
See:
http://eu.blackberry.com/eng/devices/device-detail.jsp?navId=H0,C63,P102
On the "Features" tab it says:
"Roam internationally throughout North America, Europe and Asia Pacific with Quad-Band network support on 850/900/1800/1900 MHz GSM™/GPRS and EDGE networks"
Yet, on the "specs" tab under "Wireless Network" it lists:
* Europe/Asia Pacific: 1800MHz GSM/GPRS networks
* Europe/Asia Pacific: 900MHz GSM/GPRS networks
* EDGE networks
So, which page is correct?
Thank you,

Is the iPhone 4S a quad band phone? Is the iPhone 4 a quad band phone?

    Hello nileswimmer,
If I understand correctly you want to know if the iPhone 4s can use 4 cellular bands with a GSM network. According to the following artcle, yes it does:
Apple - iPhone - iPhone 4s Technical Specifications
    World phone
    UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); CDMA EV-DO Rev. A (800, 1900 MHz)3
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Why not more quad band phones? Please!

Does anyone know why Nokia doesn't make more quad band handsets?
I live in the Caribbean where Cable and Wireless operates on a pretty useless 850/1800/1900 frequency, so the best suited phones for where I live are really the less feature rich handsets from the United States. (Unless I want to switch networks where I don't get as many privileges.) But I get most of my phones from the UK (cos they're almost always better!) And its a myth that having a tri-band handset will keep you covered. The truth is that you will only get about 70-80% coverage if your handset is relying on the 1900 band, (depending on the network in a country, of course.)
But the choices of quad band handsets from Nokia is really small, like 6270 or N80, but I'd love to have a 6233 be quad band for example.
Does anyone know, is it possible to turn a 900/1800/1900 handset into an 850/1800/1900 one? Is this something a technician could do for you?

An island called Saint Lucia, in the Caribbean, where many of us love Nokia phones (^_^) but are condemned to operate them on an 850/1800/1900 network, if we are brave enough to dare, or unwilling to do the unthinkable and, *shudder*, buy a Motorolla. (Ok, there is a 900/1800/1900 network, but *everyone* I call is on the bad/hopeless 850 one, and you just would not believe how expensive it is to call cross network. Besides, I travel to the UK several times a year, have a contract with voda and get upgraded regularly, and I naturally prefer European handsets cos I have more variety!) ^_~
Please come visit, bearing many feature rich quad band two to three megapixel with flash series 40 high resolution video Nokia phones that aren't necessarily symbian or 3G.
We shall worship you, oh great and mighty Nokia God!!!

  • New company phone ... BB noob ...

To keep this short, my company wants me to carry a cell phone. I do NOT want an iPhone and I currently have an android which I am just not excited about anymore. I have read favorable stuff about BB, particularly the new OS and security, so I am trying to find a way to get a BB for a company phone.
I talked to my director and we are going to look at BB from the security angle as we have longer term plans to expose company resources via moble devices (i.e. I am the lab rat).
My problem is that I am in Alaska and our provider is ACS (Alaska Communications). They don't offer any BB phones at all. I contacted our account rep about either a Z10 or a Z30 and they said it should work, but no guarantees, so I am at the buy a returnable phone phase.
So, my first question is pretty obvious; anyone out there use a BB with ACS (I am in Juneau)?
The Z10 (Verizon 4G) model looked like the best fit given ACS's older infrastructure is CDMA (according to their coverage map), but it doesn't appear that the online store has these for sale. Does anyone have an informed opinion about which model has the best chance to work?
Lastly, if this doesn't work out, I will have to return the phone. If the Z10 (Verizon 4G) model is the best shot, who is the best vendor since BB doesn't retail these online?
I have approval to buy either a Z10 or a Z30, so this is really about getting a phone that will work the first go around.
Any help is appreciated. I will eventually follow up this thread with the results.
    Regards,
    Stuart

I was looking at the blackberry store (unlocked) phones. I don't see much in the way of options. Here is the summary:
    Z10 - http://store.shopblackberry.com/store/bbrryus/en_US/pd/productID.287837000
        Quad band LTE 2, 5, 4, 17 (700/850/1700/1900 MHz)
        Quad band HSPA+ 1, 2, 4, 5/6, (850/1700/1900/2100 MHz) *Note: HSPA+ Band 4 (AWS) is carrier dependent
        Quad band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz)
    Z30    - http://store.shopblackberry.com/store/bbrryus/en_US/pd/productID.298806900
        Quad band LTE 3, 7, 20, 8 (1800/2600/900/800 MHz)
        Quad band HPSA/UMTS 1, 2, 5/6, 8 (800/850/900/1900/2100 MHz)
        Quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz)
I notice the LTE bands differ, but both phones advertize being 4GLTE. Does the difference in LTE bands matter?
Neither is CDMA. Do retailers sell these versions or are they for carriers only?
One of my wrinkles is that I am getting my employer to buy the phone, so I have to deal with an established storefront with return policy/etc. I figure I get one shot and then I get an android ... so trying to chose wisely!
Thanks for everyones assistance so far.

    Stuart

  • Nokia 225 DS RM-1011 : Band information please

    Hi,
    Ref: Nokia 225 DS RM-1011
The Nokia product page/specification website states this Phone to be Quad Band (pls see detailed specifications):
    http://www.nokia.com/in-en/phones/phone/225-dual-sim/specifications/ Shows Quad Band
However, when I went to purchase it, the box shows only Dual Band with the bands written on the label. Please, can the experts help clarify. I am specifically looking for a Quad Band physical key phone for my father, and have tried researching this info, but have failed to conclude.
    Thank you.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Appreciate your reply very much, thank you.
You are right, I should look for the 301 instead, thanks for that suggestion as well. Also, from the phone comparison website that you pointed to, here's how it looks with 225 Dual SIM instead...
    http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=6287&idPhone2=5323
The 225 DS shows up as Quad Band in the comparison. But I agree with you completely and I should go by what the Box says, especially in the absence of a clear data sheet for the phone or RM-1011 or a clear list of all available models for the same.
    Regards.

  • Change Band

Hi, I got a problem with my phone, I sent to US for a service repair and now it doesn't have the option of changing bands. My phone is a Treo pro unlocked and it is suppost to be quad band. I checked the treo pro guide from the web: http://palmone.r3h.net/downloads.palm.com/documentation/treopro/treoproT850UNA_UG.pdf
and it says that I should go to settings, phone and then tap on Band to change it but the tap doesn't appear.
    What can I do?
Post relates to: Treo Pro T850U (Unlocked)

Unfortunately there is no way to change the available GSM frequencies, it is not something that software alone can change. This is why it is important for people who travel regularly between the Americas and the rest of the world to choose at least a tri-band and if possible a quad-band phone.
Note that if you travel to Japan or South Korea, you would also need to make sure you have a 3G phone because GSM is already obsolete there.

  • Change band on Nokia 1616-2

Two weeks ago, I bought a Nokia 1616-2 in the Philippines to replace a 1202 I lost. A few days later, I returned to the US to find that American SIM cards don't work on this phone. According to another forum topic, it all has to do with the band. My phone is RH-125 (supports EGSM 900/1600), when I need RH-126 (supports GSM 850/1900) to support. Is there any way to switch from RH-125 to RH-126?

  • Will Verizon Be Unlocking the iPhone 5 for International Use with local carriers abroad like they do with the 4S?

Here is my situation. I am leaving the country on business in a month. Since it is pretty doubtful that an unlocked iPhone 5 will be available for pre-order tomorrow, I'll be buying one at full price under my verizon account (not due for an upgrade yet). Verizon currently SIM Unlocks the iPhone 4S if you meet certain requirements (account in good standing, active 60 days, phone activated on account, etc.) so you can use your iPhone abroad with a local carrier there for cheaper rates. Does anyone think Verizon will do this same procedure for the new iPhone 5? I understand that my new iPhone may not have 4G LTE capability abroad due to hardware limitations on different carrier models, however all new iPhone 5 models have quad band GSM/EDGE and 3G. Would I be able to use this feature if Verizon unlocked my iPhone? It should be noted I am not trying to unlock to use my phone on Tmobile or another US carrier, as with the 4S carriers put a block on this even for unlocked Verizon models. I am looking at this from the standpoint of a traveling business user (and I think there are a lot out there wondering the same thing). Nonetheless I will be preordering the iPhone 5 from Verizon and on release day I will call them and ask if they will unlock it. If they don't I will return it. I'll update my findings here for anyone else curious about this as well.

Egilbbys21... I am curious how things worked out with getting a nano SIM and your iPhone 5.  Our family will be visiting Manila this summer, and I would like to hear a first-hand account about your phone experiences.  Do you purchase minutes for call/texting?  What about data?  Any feedback you can give from your trip regarding your iPhone usage would be helpful.  Thanks!

  • I want to buy an iPhone in the USA (4 or 5!)

I want to know if it will happily work in the UK. I see that US Apple stores now sell unlocked iPhones like they do in the UK and with the current exchange rate it's a good deal.
I'm concerned that the US phone may have different GSM specs than the UK phone?
Will the US phone work exactly as the UK phone does?
They are triband phones afterall but would different GSM specs have an effect on 3G capabilty?

Actually, only partially correct. T-Mobile operates AWS 3G in the 1700 and 2100 MHz bands. The iPhone supports (from published specs):
    GSM model: Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE
    (800 850 900 1800 1900 MHz)
    Quad-band UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA
(800 850 900 1900 2100 MHz) (800 MHz not yet announced as supported by Apple)
Thus, the iPhone operates in one of T-Mobile's bands (2100 MHz), so if it doesn't work it must be a protocol difference.

  • URGENT Problem with an order

My phone (unlocked Blackberry Tour 9630) does not have a web browser (no icon, settings unavailable) nor does it have email (no icons, setup unavailable). When I purchased this phone, I was guaranteed both email and web browsing both of which are unavailable.

  • Please recommend me a basic, 100% iSync-able phone

I'm done with "Swiss Army" knife phones, and I do not want an iPhone. I want something basic that excels at talking & texting. But first, it of course has to work flawlessly with Address Book and iCal. Whether the iSync compatibility is native or requires a 3rd-party plug-in, I don't care, as long as it works flawlessly.
    *These are my additional must-haves*
    - quad-band GSM (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, nearly all of the rest of the world)
    - excellent signal reception
    - excellent call volume (inbound and outbound)
    - excellent call quality (inbound and outbound)
    - good Bluetooth functionality (unlike older Moto phones)
    - good address book (Moto "Synergy" is an example of a BAD phonebook)
    - voice dialing
    - decent calendar and to-do functionality
    - bright, clear display
    - ease of texting: good keypad, good predictive text feature
    - firmware responsiveness and stability
    _These are my nice-to-haves-but-not-deal-breakers_
    - small size (no K790a's, S710a's, etc.)
    - a UI that won't make me tear my hair out (e.g. no Motorola Synergy)
    - EDGE connectivity or better (see below)
    - available factory unlocked/unbranded
    +Here's everything I don't care about at all+
    - web browsing (basic WAP is more than I need)
    - camera
    - video
    - music
    - applications
So I basically need a SE T637 (what I'm using now - my other phones are temporarily retired) with quad-band, a better display, up-to-date Bluetooth, and improved earphone and antenna...
Do any of the newer Linux-based Motos work with iSync? What about Nokia's S40 (not S60) phones? I prefer Sony Ericssons, but I don't like much of their current line-up.

I have a very similar outlook to you when it comes to phones. I just want to be able to make calls, send texts and have iCal send me reminders to do stuff.
Don't know if you can get it in the States, but I use the Sony Ericcsson k550i for this purpose. Small, slim and with a great big bright display and good battery life, it has never let me down in the approx. nine months I've owned it. I believe in some places it's marketed without the 'i' suffix.
It ticks all the boxes for your 'must haves' and 'nice-to-haves' and even all the stuff you don't want, but depite this is wonderfully compact and slim. It even looks reasonably good in black. You can grab an iSync plug in for it for US$3 at Feisar.com or bake your own here:
    http://en.isync-hilfe.de/ (Site in English)
Best thing about it? It's cheap! Sold here in the UK for pre-paid services, it is definitely a cut above your average PAYG phone. UK review here:
    http://www.mobile-phones-uk.org.uk/sony-ericsson-k550i.htm
    Hope this helps.

PS another possible useful feature is that you can add a Memory Stick and ditch your USB pen drive should you wish

  • Recommendations needed for PDA

    Hi,
I wish to evaluate xMAM for Utilities 7.0 SR1. In that I specifically want to look at
    1. GIS/GPS integration.
    2. Push messages.
    3. RFID capabilities.
Based on my understanding I have realised that I need a device which has
    1. Windows Mobile 5.0 (Arcpad which is required for GIS is not supported on Windows Mobile 6.0)
    2. GPS receiver
    3. Minimum 64MB RAM (128 MB is desirable).
    4. ARM/XScales/Samsung S3C processor.
    5. Minimum 2GB flash memory.
I had shortlisted on the following series of devices
    1. HP iPAQ hw6940/hw6945 Mobile Messenger
    2. The Hp iPAQ rx5900
Please help me with the recommended devices/comments on the devices I mentioned above.

  • Can my Chinese E63 be used in Canada?

    Hey there!
Does anyone know if/how I can use my Chinese Nokia E63 in Canada?
I bought an E63 in Taiyuan, Shanxi, China over a year ago and was on the China Mobile network until about a week ago when my wife and I moved to Alberta, Canada.
I tried popping in a Telus SIM card, but to no avail. Is it possible that the E63 could be "locked" or something?
Thanks in advance for any help regarding this issue.

The E63 is a quad band GSM phone, so regardless of whether yours is a Chinese, US or global version, it will work as a GSM phone in Canada.
Smartphones bought in China are not 3G-enabled. This means that you will not be able to use 3G services with your phone. You will not be able to place or receive video calls and you will only get GSM or EDGE speeds for data transfer.
Also note that you will not be able to use a Canadian SIM in your phone if it is SIM-locked to your Chinese network, although I understand that this is not common practice in China.

I've got the January update and don't have the SMS that the Iphone has. I think SMS is cell to PC for chat so maybe it wouldn't work anyway. I wonder if Apple will release iChat as an application to purchase from the App Store. I'd pay an additionalo $10 for that.
I'm also looking foward to syncing my corporate email, calendars and contacts. I'm hoping that the MobileMe service which we currently have as .mac will allow syncing of multiple computers for a combined Corporate Email Exchange(Contractor) Corporate Email Exchange (Onsite) and my personal accounts currently being delivered via IMAP.
One inbox via Mail, One calendar source via iCal (with toggle to both work accounts and my personal calendar) and one contact location via Address Book
Games and Chat will be a bonus. I may even consider VoIP with the purchase of a microphone so I can finally get good reception in my house.
July will be an interesting month for me.
