870a-g54 no post, got new rma board back, also won't post

Long story short.  First board would not boot or post, brand new from newegg.  Rma'd directly to msi asking for a working board with latest bios update, but I got a brand new packaged motherboard and now the exact same problems.  The reason I went with them is to make sure it was a working updated board, otherwise I could have just gone through newegg and got a refund, now its too late for that :(
I have tried reading the forum and the faqs and have used the guides on starting barebones and all that, still no go.  I even cross swapped parts to make sure everything was technically working, except I am left wondering about the cpu.  I do not have a cheap, earlier cpu to put in this board.
1.  Does the motherboard need a cpu to boot and post?  All 4 led's light up with my x4 965 cpu
2.  As suggested I just looked at the cpu compatability list, and I am not sure if my cpu is even supported now with the latest bios even though these products were bundled at more than one retailer and the box has the x4 logo on it.
I do see a cpu called z965 with a cpu code:HDZ965FBK4DGM
My cpu code is:  HDZ965FBGMBOX if that matters?
So either my cpu is not on the list, or those cpus are the same and I need the latest bios and msi did me wrong by taking another box off the shelf without checking?  And if I have to take a chance on them doing me right again they want me to pay to ship it again and hope for a better outcome?
Thanks so much for any help!

Hmm, all the computers I have had will show the boot screen and beep atleast once before it gets to the memory message before os boot.  Then either hang, or report message and/or beep like crazy.
Reguardless I have tried the 1 stick in each slot and tried a couple different ddr3 memory sticks.
One of them is here:  http://www.mwave.com/mwave/deepsearch_v3.asp?scriteria=BA42027
This build was kind of built on a budget based on deals and parts others on various forums had reported working together so something is definately up.
Also let computer sit 15+ minutes each time without bios battery.  This is just with a memory module, cpu, video card, and power supply hooked up on a piece of cardboard.
Well I thank you all for the help, but to me it seems wierd I took the parts home and have swapped a complete extra set of parts and same results.  I have the new computers pieces in mine right now as well and all is well.
I am going to frys tomorrow and purchasing another brand motherboard and will swap it in and see what happens.

  • Another 870A-G54 not posting

Well, here I am, yet another person with his newly acquired 870A-G54 MB not posting.  This is actually my second MB of this series.  The first one I RMA'd after it shorted in my case due to a rogue standoff hidden beneath the board; a stupid mistake on my part, but one which I thought I had corrected with this board. I removed all of my standoffs and then put one back for each hole in the MB.
Now the current problem. I put everything together and turned on the board for the first time.  The fans spun up, the HDD light came on, and the 4 CPU power phase LEDs turned on. However, neither my mouse nor my keyboard received power, and my monitor remained in standby mode.
All of the parts listed in my signature are newly purchased.  They are the hardware that I am using with this MB.  According to the MSI compatibility test results, the ADATA sticks, the 8500GT, and the Phenom II are all compatible. This specific Antec Earthwatts was not tested, but a higher wattage one was, and that was compatible as well.
I know my first step is to perform a bench test with only 1 stick of RAM, the VGA, and my keyboard.  That test failed, so now I have some questions that you guys can hopefully answer for me.
First: What do the power phase LEDs actually mean? I am trying to figure out if it is good or bad that all four come on and stay on, but the manual doesn't give any description beyond the fact that each LED represents a power phase mode, 1-4. I haven't found anything online that explains this to me. What are power phase modes? What does it mean if all four lights are on?
Second: Could any of my other hardware have been damaged by the first MB shorting out? I know that the VGA and PSU work fine because when I RMA'd the first time, I put my old rig together, but used these new parts in place of my old VGA and PSU.  I am wondering specifically if the RAM or CPU could have been scrambled. Just to note, there was no physical sign/damage when the first MB shorted; no smoke, spark, or smell, and there are no signs of physical damage (bent pins, scratches, or cracks) on either the CPU or RAM.
Third: Could this be related to my power supply? Despite the hardware itself being new, the model is old, but it has all of the proper power connectors for this board.  Here is a list of the voltage rails and the amps
    +3.3 V, 25A
    +5 V, 25A
    +12V1, 22A
    +12V2, 22A
    +12V3, 25A
    -12V, .5A
Does this power supply not provide enough power to the CPU?
Fourth: Compatibility tests aside, is it possible that the MB doesn't like the Nvidia card? Like I said above, I know that the VGA card works, but MSI seems to favor ATI cards.  I have a really old ATI Radeon card that I test with the board, if you think that would reveal anything.
Finally: What besides standoffs making contact with the board could cause a MB to short inside a case?

    No Post - Shorting issues
Motherboard Grounding to case causing No Post
Test the motherboard outside of the case to verify that the motherboard is not shorting to the case and causing a problem
         •    With only the CPU and heat sink, memory, and video card (or onboard video) connected to the motherboard, place the motherboard on a non-conductive surface and retest the motherboard
         •    Check the case mounting standoffs to verify that they are lining up correctly with the mounting holes on the motherboard.
Also try with barabone setup [when testing with mainboard out of PC case], and 1 memory stick only in 1st dimm close to cpu socket.

  • Yet another 870A-G54 not posting

    Recently purchased an MSI 870A-G54.
Installed an X6 1055T 95W AMD Phenom II X6 processor and 2 PSD38G1333KH Patriot DDR3-1333 4GB memory sticks. All using a WIN+ Power 700 W power supply purchased at the same time.
I have tested the machine on a piece of cardboard with just the above components connected together (and an nVidia 8600 GT 256Mb PCI-e video card)
The system will not post or beep. The power LED's are all lit as well as the FSB control knob and the CPU fan does turn on. However, there is no video. As in, the monitor never wakes from suspend.
I tested it with both a DVD-Rom and an HDD and the only thing different is that the DVD-Rom will seek, wait a second, then seek again. The same with the HDD.
I have tried testing the system with 3 different video cards, all with the same result. There is no smell of burnt components, and nothing looks burned or broken.
I removed the CMOS battery for 10 minutes and placed it back into the machine with no change as well.
I have tried moving the memory sticks to different positions, or even just 1 memory stick. I also tried with a different brand of memory with no change. When the memory is removed, there are 3 long beeps, if it helps.
Do I have a bad board or is something else wrong? If the board is bad, did it also destroy the new CPU and/or memory and/or video card(s).
    Specs once again:
    MSI 870A-G54 motherboard
unknown BIOS version as it will not post.
    X6 1055T 95W AMD Phenom II X6 processor
    PSD38G1333KH Patriot DDR3-1333 4GB memory stick x2
    nVidia GeForce 8600GT
    WIN+ POWER 700W HEC-700TE-2WX amp ratings for the +3.3V, +5V and +12V are 24A, 20A, 30A
No HDD or anything else connected at the moment.

    The little green sticker says:
    A7599
    AMSH70
    Exactly like that.
Also, I plugged in the two plugs that are on the board and in the instruction manual. First, JPWR1, the massive plug with many little plugs on it all in a row. Second, JPWR2, with its little double row making 8 plugs total. I don't see any other plugs on it and the instruction booklet didn't say to plug in anything else, power-wise.
And, as I stated in the first post, I tested the machine with 3 different video cards all with the same results.
As for an alternate power supply, I tried my old TAO Enterprise 470W that was in my old computer. No change.
Also, from reading other posts on this forum, I feel I need to state a few obvious things that I have done to skip those steps and to give you more info.
First, I did clear the CMOS by removing the jumper and battery for a length of time.
Second, I checked the bottom and top of the board looking for damaged components. None were found. It looks the same as it does on the MSI website.
Third, I checked the memory in all possible positions with both one and two sticks of the new memory and with the off-brand memory.
Fourth, from reading the forum posts here, the moderators are big on the copy/paste post saying to remove it from the case and place it on a non-conductive surface and bare-bones check it. That is where is has been since the beginning. It has never been inside of a case. So a post saying to take it out of the case and put it on a piece of cardboard is not needed.
Fifth, aside from the video card, everything else that is plugged into this system now, the CPU, memory and power supply, is brand new. So if it could possibly be the culprit of one of these other items (none of which I can check) then they need to be replaced instead of the motherboard.
Sixth, while I am not a professional, this is not my first build. I have never had this kind of problem before.
Seventh, it will not be as easy for me to send these parts back in, as I currently live in Japan and bought these components off of Amazon Japan. So if there is anything you can think of for me to try that may work, please let me know.

  • Got new logic board, now  software is making me go through authorization?

i just got a new logic board installed on my 2007 MacBook Pro. now any time i open any of my software it makes me go through the authorization process (asking for serial #) - its as though with the new logic board the software actually thinks that its been installed on a whole different computer. just wondering if this is normal or if there is any way to get around it. I do audio production on my mac so I have literally hundreds of different plugins installed many of which have complex product authorization schemes. Thanks in advance for the help.

+*its as though with the new logic board the software actually thinks that its been installed on a whole different computer*+
That's exactly what's happening. Most modern authorization/activation routines look at the hardware giving specific values to various components. When something like the logic board is replaced, the application pretty much sees that as a different machine.
I believe Apple does have the ability to set the serial number in a new logic board... although it has to be done by Apple. This alone may not bypass the need to reactive some of your applications. It depends on the specific activation scheme the application is using. You're probably best off just re-activating your applications. I've never had problems getting software re-activated when dealing with the software vendors due to this situation. Fortunately, OS X itself doesn't require activation. As something of a techy... I've replaced motherboards on desktop systems regularly and even Microsoft has never given me a problem with reactivating Windows.
It might be a pain... but hopefully you'll just have to go through it once.

  • Mac got new logic board

My mac had to get a new logic board. I can find my website in idisk public. I see the folder of my website. When I open Iweb my site does not appear.
How do i get Iweb to re-recognize my site?

See this Apple doc on How to back up MobileMe data. It says:
Any websites you have published with iWeb should still be available within iWeb. iWeb stores everything in a Domain file, normally located in the ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder (although it can be moved). If you no longer have this file, you can view your currently published pages and manually recreate them within iWeb, but there is no way to import published pages back into iWeb.
You can manually back up the Domain file, or use Backup to back it up.
By the way, for searching purposes it may be useful to know that an iWeb '06 Domain file is called "Domain.sites" and iWeb '08 & '09 Domain files are called "Domain.sites2" — although the “.sites” extension is usually invisible.
If you don't have a backup of your Domain file (e.g. via Time Machine), paragraph 2.3 of this FAQ page gives some tips on how to use published files, graphics, photos, etc., to help rebuild the site from scratch:

  • 870A-G54 overclocking issue with new bios 17.D

I have my config in my signature. Flashing this new BIOS 17.D made my motherboard impossible for overclocking what is sad. No matter how I try the frequency won't go more than default. Computer just doesn't start. So I had to roll back to BIOS 17.10.
But at least RAM was detected fine so I had all my 8gb.
I wish MSI will make a new and better update with AM+3 suppport, full ram and overclocking possibilities. Because version 17.D is no go for sure.

    me the same,
what does that mean ? you are experiencing the same problems with the same BIOS and have reverted to the BIOS that works for you, or you have reported it to MSI technical so that they can address your apparant problem ?

  • Got new iphone, and backed up my 4 and when i went to resore from backup it said enter password, but iv never put a password in and its the 1st time it has ever been connected to this laptop, How can i get on to my backups :S

I have just got the new 4s today, and plugged my old iphone 4 into my friends comp, for the first time, backed up my iphone,
then when i went to restore my new iphone 4s from the backup of my old phone, it said enter password, and when i looked the encrypt with password was ticked and it said to enter my password, but i have never put a password in, and never backed up my phone before,
how can i change the password if i never put one in, in the first place.
    kimmy,. x

If you can't get the password correct, you CANNOT restore from that backup.
However, if you've been using your phone as recommended by Apple, there should be minimal data loss.
Your iTunes library is on your computer, so you can synch all your apps, music, movies, ringtones, etc, on to your new phone.
Similarly, contacts should be synched to Address Book, Outlook, or a cloud service for you to easily synch back to your new phone.
Pictures taken from your old phone and not synched to your computer are lost, but you would have been synching those photos to your computer frequently as recommended.  Other photos that you synch TO your iPhone are still on your computer.
You won't be able to get text messages back.

  • Got new iphone, didnt back up old one. want to get old stuff? possible?!?

I cracked my screen on my old Iphone. called to get it fixed and they said send it out and be a week until i got a new one. didnt think to back it up or anything, wasnt told to back it up.... anyways i want to get my old stuff from my itunes account on my new phone and isnt working out so great. i know due to piracy issues they make it impossible to just hook up any device to an account for all to have. but its mine and can prove it but dont want to waste all the time and energy not to mention the money one apps and music. any advice would be much appreciated???

As long as the apps are still available in the store, and you use the same iTunes account as you originally used to buy them, then you should be able to re-download them for free, and depending upon which country that you are in you might also be able to re-download your iTunes music purchases : re-downloading.

  • New logic board and now won't link to airport express

    hi
I have a macbook which I bought in january, after 2 weeks I had various kernal panics and apple replaced the logic board. I picked it up yesterday and was using it at work on a wireless network all day, then I came home and tried to connect to my airport express and it wouldn't connect, it sees every other network in the building, but not mine (pre logic board replacement it connected fine). I reset the cable box, plus the airport express a couple of times but no luck, I then tried to connect my ibook and lo and behold it connects fine, I am on it at the moment.
I've restarted the macbook a few times, plus checked that airport is on, I've checked all my network connections, and they are fine. I've used airport setup assistant and admin utility, and it just can't see the express.
So does anyone have an idea how I can get my macbook to see my airport express?
I can find nothing wrong with it or the macbook.
    thanks very much

Do you have access control (MAC address filtering) enabled on the AirPort Express (AX)? If so, you need to add the MAC address of the wireless interface of your MacBook.
Even better, disable access control. It offers no real security since the MAC addresses are easily discovered and cloned.

  • My wife and I just got new iPads.  We also have an iPhone 4s (wife) and iPhone 5 (mine).  With these iPhone we each have our own appleID.  My question is that I want to set up iTunes on our desktop and share media (songs, movies etc) on all our devices.

We want to keep our separate ID's.  How can I accomplish this?  Do I need to set up a family appleID for the desktop or use one of the existing accounts?  Thanks for the help.

If you don't mind sharing everything, you can share the same apple ID. I do think it limits your ability to facetime, but I'm not sure on that.

  • NF980-G65 RMA board, fried PCIE ports?

OK, so after a miserable RMA experience with MSI several years ago, MFLASH killed my board recently and I had to RMA it. The whole process took 2 weeks, which while excruciatingly long to go without my gaming rig, wasn't as bad as I though. I installed my new RMA board and the PCIE slots are bad. I'm posing on this machine right now with a 250GTS in the slot but its running under Standard VGA Adapter. I have been working on this machine for 2 days now and the only conclusion is that they're fried. The parts I tested with work perfectly fine on my other machine with the same board, and are rock stable, even through 12 hours of prime95 and 8 hours of Memtest86. I have tried...
    4 videocards: MSI 460GTX Cyclone 1GB(brand new), XFX GTS250 1GB, 8800GTS 320MB, 7950GT 512MB. ALL cards work in 2 other machines
2 sets of DDR, Patriot DDR3 1600 2x4GB for AMD systems, OCZ Black Edition DDR3 1600 2x4GB. Both run perfect in my other NF980
3 revisions of nVidia drivers straight from the sight, 2 revisions of nForce drivers
2 PSU: Coolermaster 550 SLI, OCZ 850 Game Xtreme
Fresh Win7 64 install on a spare HDD, wouldn't get past "starting services" when its looking for VGA
As I said, the machine runs great right now, its cool (32idle 54fully loaded) and every thing else works as intended. I have all drivers installed (nForce board & LAN, Creative Audigy) but when I go to install the drivers for the videocard, after it reboots, the system gets to the login screen and freezes after 5-10 seconds forcing a hard reboot. The onboard video works but looks absolutely horrid but no card will function after loading its drivers. I have let Windows load its own GTS250 driver but it does the same thing. Its not the videocards (all 4 are running good), its not the RAM or heat issues. After every driver uninstall I reboot into safe mode and use driver cleaner pro then reboot and reload drivers but they all do the exact same thing. I have tried resetting BIOS safe and recommended defaults, hand tweaking it..EVERYTHING!! Now I will have to try and get another RMA and make it another 2-4 weeks with hundreds of dollars of hardware collecting dust.
Has anyone ever got MSI to cross ship? They can have my credit card number, phone number, social security..hell even my firstborn, I just need to get this thing up and running NOW!! Every store in my area dropped the board from their website within the last 2 weeks and I drove 40 miles from store to store today looking for someone with one in stock, I was desperate enough to do the old sticker switch and return and pay the restocking fee which is less than shipping this thing back again. Things like this make me want to swear off MSI like I've sworn off ASUS but I've been running MSI boards for over a decade (remember the K7NG2-ILSR and Neo4 Platinum SLI!!!) and to me they always put out the perfect motherboard with the mix of features, stability, overclocking and color schemes but I just cant have a system down for 2 months when I've scrimped and saved to buy all these toys and waited for them to ship.
Maybe I'm missing some magical step that I haven't seen in my 12 years of experience. Any ideas?

Ok, I have tried 5 cards now, in all 3 ports and the exact same thing happens. 460GTX, GTS250, 8800GTS, 7950GT, 7600GT
I completed a succesful benchmark with Vantage with the onboard video.
It ran 2 1HR prime95 sessions, 1 with onboard and 1 with a card in the slot (Standard VGA adapter), the system and PSU are stable
Everything was stripped from the case and run at my workstation, with only 1 HDD, 1 stick of RAM, BIOS defaults. It runs beautifully, until the machine reboots after video driver install.
I handle the board VERY gently, but it does a lot of "crackling" like something is loose or not set properly onto the board. As stated, I have another NF980-G65 in my other system and it runs all of the hardware fine and seems to be much more solidly built.
I'm going to box it up and return it again, there simply is no other option. Hopefully the next one will work properly.

  • Where Can i buy a Brand New Logic Board for my Macbook Pro?

My Macbook Pro (Mid 2010 13") logic board got fried, so i was just wondering if possible, where i could get a new logic board. Also, would the new 2011 i7 logic board (if purchasable), for the 13" as well be compatible with the chassis/body of my mac?

Apple would be the main supplier of any replacement parts.

  • 870A-G54 V3.1 instant FF on POST, all board LEDs and fans on.

Trying to get  a 870A-G54 V3.1 working. I get instant FF on a PCI POST card, all the blue LEDs and fans are on, so is the red LED on the overclock button. I have 16 gig of new Patriot DDR3 plugged in and an AMD Phenom 2 X2 555 CPU I know is good because I pulled it off an AM2+ box it's been running in for a while.
The board is a used freebie, condition unknown due to the giver not having an AM3 CPU to test it.
I have no other AM3 CPU or any other DDR3 RAM to try. Is there any way to make it load the latest BIOS off a USB stick? Or am I going to have to dig up some old single core Sempron just to flash the latest BIOS? I've run into this problem many times over the years, pretty much since the first PC boards with flash BIOS.
Or could it be that a 330W supply just isn't enough, even with a piddly little low profile nVidia GT520?
Would be nice to know if the board's just defekt or if it's something fixable. In some searching on this, I've found this same instant FF issue with this exact model MSI board quite a lot.
Right now this board is shoved to the back burner, I ordered a surplus/new OEM board from a different manufacturer, and will also get a nice 80% efficient 500W supply. I've a system to get built and fiddling with a problem board isn't getting it done.

Only number is by the CPU socket, B316023***

Patriot PS000562 4GB PC3-10600 1333Mhz. Hmmm, the label lies! Fine print says (2X2GB)Kit. 8 gig will be enough. Got them in an online auction lot from a computer tech school that closed. They're from 2 different batches, T-0009264 and T-0009267. Solder mask is a slightly different shade of green and the PCB material is different color too. Trace layout and chips are the same.
I have an Antec "earthpower" 500W supply ordered. It has an 8 pin connector.

    Sempron 145
No beeps but all fans and lights work. The board is 870A-G54  Version 3.1

There is no such thing as a hard reset, and switching the reset-switch for a few minutes is enough to reset everything.
However that memory of yours is Intel designed memory, try some el cheapo stick and see what happens.

  • Just got my MBP back with a new logic board but...

    Hello all
I just got my laptop back yesterday. They did the logic replacement due to a bad graphics card (nvidia) I was not under warranty. I was having the Videocontroller error on the AHT. I just ran the AHT today via the apple disc. It came up with 4SNS/1/40000000:TGOD-86.500. I also noticed my superdrive does not accept blank disc media, it spits them out after a few seconds in. It still install and read programs off it. Burning discs is just the issue. I posted that issue here http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12410595#12410595 But prior to the new logic board, it recognized the discs as "blank"
Please any help would be appreciated.
    Marc

I had an issue whereby only certain DVDs were usable.....some were, and some weren't.
My MBP went in for repair and the SuperDrive was replaced under my AppleCare extended warranty.
You'll likely need your SuperDrive replaced.
If I didn't have Applecare, I'd be up Shyte Creek by now with some very costly repairs on my September '08 MBP.
BTW, My MBP had two logic board failures in its second year of ownership which were replaced under my AppleCare warranty.
