875 Chipset question

Changing to a different board from the SiS and looking at the Intel 875 chipset.  I am currently using the 2.53 p4 533 bus CPU.  Is this CPU compatible with the intel 875 800Mhz bus? like the MSI 875??  If it isn't what board would one look for to utilize 3200 Corsair 512MB and a 2.53 Ghz 400/533 FSB???
Thanks,
Rob

Well I took the jumper off and have tried it a couple ways.
Bios - Promise controller as RAID
Driver - Fastrak 376/378
built the array, 1 drive, striped
- didn't show in My Computer
- showed in device manager as Promise 1+0 Striped/Raid 0 SCSI Device
Bios - Promise controller as SATA
Driver - SATA378 IDE controller
no array build option, shows up on the promise screen as UDMA2 drive with IDE Bus Mastering Enabled
- didn't show in My Computer
- showed in device manager as -drive model- SCSI Disk Device
I have done that with the jumper off and on as master for a single device on cable, and as master for dual device cable. (that distinction was new to me, but it was in the manual)
I'm sure I'm missing something small, and I'm ready to start from scratch as I've been meesing around with it so much. But I'm not even sure what it 'should' be set at to start with.

  • Intel 865 and 875 chipsets: A bad idea?

Since I started building PC compatible computers, I have used a lot of different motherboards whith different chipsets, video cards, cpu's, peripherals, soundcards, ram types, etc. I always had a problem or two when building a new system, but I also always found a solution. But I think I never had so many problems as I am having now with my new 865PE Neo2 LS system.
Every day I see more and more people with problems with their 865/875 chipset computers. In this same forum lot's of people ask for help with their systems. Random reboots, blue screens, unstable systems are the most common problems. Almost ALL this problems are Windows XP related. This problems persist, even when they (me too) have changed EVERY pci card, agp video card, and even ram, leaving only the Cpu and motherboard to be replaced (and loose some money in the process). I have started to wonder if 865 and 875 chipsets are XP friendly.
My last system was an Intel 850 chipset board with a pentium 2.4 GHz and rambus rdram. I NEVER had a blue screen, less a random system restart, even when I used the most strange cards and peripherals.
I have started to wonder if this new system was worth it. Is it worth buying an Intel 2.4C HT Cpu when you just can´t enable HT because your system becomes unstable?. Does it make sense to buy an 865PE motherboard with faster memory bandwith, when you have to use windows 98 or ME?.
Right now I am using windows ME because I was writing this same thread in XP and my system rebooted.
So, here I am, waiting for a new chipset to appear, and more money to be collected, so I can build a computer I can USE.
I am even hoping prescott cpu's can't be used with this board, so I can have an excuse to change my system.
Sad, but at this point it is probably the only thing left me to do, and also for a lot of other people out there.

Well I'm sorry that you have had such bad luck with Intels newest Product ....I myself have had nothing but Praise for Both of the Chipsets, as I own Both Flavors, I have a brand New ABIT IC7-MAX3(i875) MSI-6758-FIS2R(i875) and My Wifes I865PE-LIS2R, and aside from minor bugs, Which I have found to be More of the Memory Makers Fault than Intels for trying to shoot Modules out there without taking the time for a true extensive testing period, so they could see that these Chipsets are like no others that came before them....Are they "Picky" or "Tempermental" absolutely, do they give us the Memory Bandwith (Up to 6.4 GB/Sec) that we could only dream of 12 Months ago?....I say yes.....I really dont think that you are going to see Intel vary to far from this Chipset, You may see a revision change but, dont hold your breath on something completly different (except for PCI and AGP Bus Revisions) until Intel finally Desides to go with a 64 BIT Desktop CPU ................Sean REILLY875

  • Tecra M5-389 IEEE Chipset Question

    Hi board,
just a quick question about whether the new Tecra M5-389 model which i am looking to purchase has a Texas Instruments firewire chipset on board. I guess it doesn't have to be that exact model as i am pretty sure the same chipset would be used across the whole new M5 family, can anyone check for me?
    Many thanks in advance

    Hi Jeffrey!
thanks very much for your answer, i suspected that Toshiba would still be using a reliable manufacturer,
my old Satellite has a texas chipset

  • 875 HDD question

Hope someone can help me with this.
Just got all the bits and pieces together to build my new machine. I have two WD Raptors in Raid 0 running XP from the ICHR5 on the 875 NEO. I also have three optical drives on IDE 1 and 2. I want my WD 200GB Ultra ATA drive to be on IDE 3 (the Promise controller).
I can't get the drivzilla to show up in My Computer. I've tried loading the drivers for the Promise controller and during boot up it shows at the Promise screen, but in device manager the disk shows up as a SCSI device (not) and I can't access it.
Is there a way to set up a single IDE drive on the Promise controller? No raid, no SATA drives, etc. And if so, what driver should I be using, and what tweak might I have missed in the BIOS. I have tried setting the Promise controller to disabled, SATA only, and RAID only, but no luck. (where is the IDE only setting?)
By the way thanks to JC74 for the info on how to set the bios to avoid the BSOD on the XP load. I have these settings based on his post:
    on Chip IDE configuration
    - operate mode should be Native
    - ATA configuration S-ATA only
    - keep P-ATA enabled Yes
    - P-ATA channel select both
    - S-ATA ports definition (first option) P0-3/ p1-4 ((mine is actuall 1 and 2.))
    - Configute S-ATA as RAID yes
I could use my last 'regular' IDE port, or the controller card that came with the drive, but I would rather run it off the Promise controller. And seriously, why is it showing as a SCSI in device manager.
    Thanks for any help.

  • P965 Platinum. Chipset question

    Hi folks
Just loaded latest of Intel's Chipset identification utilities and found out that I have G965 chipset pn my MB!
I checked MSI site, MB manual - they all claim that 7238 uses P965 chipset.
PC runs well so I do not worry much about that.
Just curios  - why Intel reports that there is a G965 chip set and other sources say that it supposed to be P965?

Quote from: AaronYuri on 06-November-07, 15:44:49
P965 and G965 are identical, just G965 has onboard VGA.
Just a simple detection problem, nothing to worry about.
Thanks a lot. As I pointed I do not worry at all.
So as I understand in P965 Platinum MSI does not support onboard VGA functionality at all?

  • RAID questions

I have a couple of questions on Raid. According to Danny, ICH5R is not hardware raid. This question was risen in my last post "Help creating partitions in RAID 0 volume", because it seems Partiton Magic only works with hardware raid. Also, I got the impression that a RAID 0 volume can only be created in a Dynamic Disk. However, Windows disk manager shows my Raid 0 volume as being a Basic disk.   I'm confused. My questions:
    - Does software in general recognize my Raid setup as being software raid (ICH5R)?
    - Is it true that there is little gain in speed with software raid?
    - Why does my raid volume show up as being a basic disk?
    - How much does it cost a TRUE hardare raid controller? Any decisive advantages over my mobo's ICH5R?
    - As anyone used Partion Magic for partitoning Raid volumes using software raid?
I've been serching the web for answers but I've found more contradictions than answers   Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I can't answer all your questions but here's a start.
Theoretically, the ICH5R has twice the bandwidth of the PCI bus so should be faster. In practice, most people with FIS2R boards have found the Promise controller a little quicker. It seemed a little faster for me as well but it wasn't a huge difference and I suspect it depends on what you're using it for. As for hardware/software issues, I don't know. I do know that I got hard drive performance increases of between 30 and 70% on both Raid controllers compared to a single drive depending on which benchmark program I used and the type of test. I also found that Partition Magic 8 seems to function properly using the boot floppy with either the Intel or Promise Raid controller. I also use Drive Image 7 which comes with a boot CD and it works with both Raids as well. I have learned the hard way not to use any features where you make changes in Windows and the program then boots automatically into DOS to make changes and then boots into Windows again. If the program is not completely compatible with the 865/875 chipset(I doubt any can promise that yet), it will hang in Dos mode and you're stuck with a Dos partition at the beginning of your C drive. So I like to boot these programs from a floppy/CD.
I'm not satisfied yet that the Raid0 config is really stable so I have WinXP installed on a single SATA in the Intel controller and a Raid0 array on the Promise controller for all my media/Games. I also put my pagefile on the Raid. This allows me to load game levels/movies/large images etc... quickly and keep my OS a little safer. After Windows loads, it doesn't access the XP drive much anyway with 1GB of memory. Then I just periodically save important media/game saves on the XP drive or CD and use drive image to save the OS on the Raid drive.
Hope that helps answer some of your questions.

  • Motherboard Questions

    Hi All,
I have a question, I have the following 3 MBs to chose from, I'm on a tight budget so I can't really afford the most expensive one without GOOD justification.
I will be running the P4 - 2.6GHz (800Mhz HT) CPU and 512Mb of Kingston 400Mhz memory. I will not overclock the system at all.
    My motherboard options are:
    1) MSI 648 - SIS 661FX
    2) MSI 865PE - Intel 865
    3) MSI 875P - Intel 875
Can anybody suggest which one will suffice for my requirements and also tell me what the diffrence between the 865 and the 875 chipset is ...
    Thanks

Go with the MSI-i865PE, as this is the "Best Bang For The Buck" Chipset out of all...As for the Difference between the i865PE and the i875P, well that is INTELS way to Make us pay some extra $$$... As the 875 was originally slated to be the only Chipset to use the PAT Technology (Performance Acceleration Technology) and this is (Simply Put) a tech. that "Automaticaly" Sets the Memory timings to a More Agressive (Tighter) Setting.....But Most of the Manufacturers Have Learned how to Make the i865PE (Through a BIOS Tweak) to perform the same, or Faster in some instances, for a lot less money!...The Only thing that the i875 Can do, that the other chipset cannot is Run ECC Memory (Error Correction Code).....But this is something that you dont need unless you are running a Server ...So go with the MSI-i865PE!.............Sean REILLY875

  • Intel 7205 Chipset Problem (MS-6565)

I've posted here a few times referencing a problem I've been having with the machine I built (detailed in signature block).
I've had some kind, but unhelpful responses from folks on this forum -- thanks to everyone who responded.
In short, I've been plauged (sp?) with graphics device failures.  Microsoft error reporting rersponds that it is something wrong with the graphics driver of card.
I found some information in a review of the new Intel 875 chipset based motherboard.   Please read at:
    http://www.motherboards.org/articlesd/motherboard-reviews/1245_1.html
Basically, it states that the 7205 has a problem with AGP.
I have sent numerous (okay -- only three) querries to MSI, but have had NO RESPONSE.  If any of the senior moderators have an inside track with MSI, I would appreciate your asking if they intend to do anything to address this problem (fix with a bios update -- replace cards, etc.
    Thanks,
    Wyn

MSI isn't going to answer any questions on this board becaused they seem to have washed their hands of any responsibility.  I had (repeat HAD) the same board with the same problem.  After two months I stopped waiting for MSI to answer me back.  They never did.  Look around these forums and you'll find that this is typical of this company.
Here's the best advice I can give you.  Take your MSI board and walk to the nearest trash recepticle.  Proceed to hold this piece of&^!$ board of it and let go.
I took a loss on this board and I can assure you that I will never make another MSI MIStake again.  I went out and got a cheapo GIGABYTE board and had ZERO problems with it from day one.

  • Msi 875 Neo safe buy?

    Hi bas
My two boys want to build a game-machine each, based on the 875 chipset. We 've been reading most of the posts on the 875 Neo (our favorite board so far after reading reviews), but it's not easy to decide, whether the board is a safe buy. Will it run on Kingston HyperX PC3500 with bios 1.0, which it probably is shipped with? If we use Win XP on NTFS, must we use the floppy/ramdisk method to upgrade the bios? Would you recommend a bios-upgrade to  v.1.4 or should we rather wait for the next bios from Msi?
    Regards

The board will probably ship with bios version 1.2, if you want to overclock, flash bios 1.3b2 onto it, else bios v1.4.

  • 875 neo - 8x agp ti4200 incompatible

Having problems with a ti4200 8x agp and a new msi 875 neo
When running in 8x agp mode, i am getting problems with the display when using 3d games, ie white flashes and eventual freezing up.
Running in an msi 845 chipset, the card runs fine at 8x agp mode
After been unsuccessful in trying to find a way to set the agp speed setting with the 875 neo under bios, i have resorted to using rivatuner to set the agp to 4x via software, and now the card works fine.
Is there any issues regarding the running of 8x agp video cards and the 875 chipset
    Running P4 2.4c and corsair 512meg twinx pc3200
    Gainward TI4200 128 meg 8x agp

I had issues with PNY Cards Ti4200 8x and also Pny Ti4400 both worked fine on other boards but not this one. Upgraded to ATI 9800 PRO and glad I did.]

  • SMBIOS Info wrong, only shows 1 stick of RAM

As always I would be grateful for any help at all, thanks...
The pcpitstop.com -  benchmark/system evaluation website just informed me that my SMBIOS info is incorrect in that it shows only one of my 2 512MB sticks of Corsair RAM. Now I know that incorrect SMBIOS info is common, and not always dangerous. However, the pcpitstop results mentioned the possibility that my BIOS may be corrupt. Together with the recent death of my Promise RAID Array, and the fact that the Intel App Acc RAID edition cannot read the "RAID Option ROM Chip" once again, I am now officially worried. I am afraid that in a couple of days, or weeks I am going to be rebuilding my whole system from scratch, because the MB died and took my other components with it! Is it time to hit the big red panic button, remove this board, and exchange it for a ASUS or ABIT at Fry's?(thank God I got the  "full performance 3-year no questions asked exchange warranty" on all my components!) If I can fix my problem, and/or test to see if the end is nigh, I will be eternally grateful for an explanation how. I have some troubleshooting experience w/ this stuff, but the 875 chipset is so much less forgiving than any I have worked with in the past, that I am becoming positively gunshy!
          Thanks again,
          John

Thanks Sean, I normally would be less inclined to get worried over such things. However the crashes etc. I have had with this MB have made me kinda nervous. Especially with all of the negative talk there has been about our board. Personally, I find it  satisfying as hell to work through the various issues, and get a good OC despite the challenges. If it were easy , or worked all the time, it would bore the hell out of me! Speaking of which, I have had some very positive results lately in the OC department. I must admit that I have not had it as bad as some others in terms of wierd AGP/PCI unlocking and such. The latest boost came as a silver lining to that dark assed cloud which fragged my Promise Array. Things are more stable, a couple of Applications are running error free for the first time and my IRQ situation is very clean.
I would like to ask you about the situation with the Intel RAID Application Accelerator however. Then I promise I'll leave you alone to enjoy your Holidays My question is: Am I doing something to cause the RAID Option ROM Version to become unreadable by the Intel software? Up until just recently, the application would give the message about not all functions being available, because I needed a BIOS upgrade. I know this was not true, but until I moved my RAM to DIMMs 2&4, pulled & moved my Santa Cruz Soundcard a couple of slots, cleared the CMOS and reinstalled th IAA RAID Edition, I would periodically get the ROM not recognized message and lose some functionality. I also noticed that Sandra and aida32 would both show my DIMM 1 as a PCI slot (which demonstrates what you said about such utilities) however both problems went away at the same time, Is there some other big no-no that I don't know about like the Striped Disks thing? My Rig  is flying right now, I just want to keep it that way... Thanks!
             Merry Christmas!

  • Instability with a capital I

First of all sorry for bringing this old topic about my system up again.
I can only use the performance modes Fast and Turbo if DDR voltage is set to 2.65-2.7, DDR frequency on Auto, memory by SPD and fsb to exactly 201..not 200 and not 202. Otherwise my system wont boot. In windows my system seems stable and I can surf around and run benchmarks all day if I like but when I play certain games (Warcraft III in particular) it reboots after 5-10 mins or I get memory read errors. Turbo seems MORE stable than Fast mode. Any ideas why?
It's not a cooling issue since the cpu temp never exceeds 43.
I'm probably going to get new memory sticks. the K2 version of the KHX3200 or 3500, haven't decided yet. They offered me a 85% refund for the ones I have.
I hope the following people read this thread cos i got some questions for you.
Mr Moleman: Have you successfully played Warcraft III with your KHX3500 in Ultra-Turbo mode?
aggie02: Have you successfully tried higher fsb than 201 with your K2 sticks?
vango44:  We got the same memory..is your system 100% stable? you got fsb set at 218 AND you have turbo. Let me know if you get your memory to run in Cas2.0
All i want is a system with PAT enabled that is stable and the possibility of overclocking in the future

If you can reasonably determine that the crashes are due to memory, then personally I would take the refund and go with the K2's. The Kingston site does say somewhere that these modules are more suitable for the 865/875 chipsets.(so I'd like to know what my modules are suitable for??   )
When you run in "slow", do you still get the game crashes at all.
How about running 5:4(set the Ram down to 333?) Try all the games that usually crash. I also switched my Ram from Dimm1+3 to 2+4 and this seemed to allow me to overclock a little higher.
If it still crashes in slow and at 333DDR, then I would suspect other problems than just the Ram(drivers/registry etc...)
It would be ideal if you could get a hold of some other memory just to try them out with your current config.
    Hope it works out!
My last box was a Piii 733 and things have sure gotten a lot more complicated with Dual-Channel, Pat, Dot, Sata, Raid etc... Fortunately, I have as much fun tinkering with all the settings as I do playing games...But it's definitely frustrating sometimes.

  • HELP! System won't POST when SPD enabled

    Here's my specs
    P4 3.0ghz (800mhz FSB and HT)
    MSI Neo2 Motherboard
    512mb Kingston HyperX PC4000
    Radeon 9800 PRO
2x 160gb Maxtor Ultra Series 8mb cache on Raid 0
I recently traded my HyperX PC3200 and replaced it (not added) with a HyperX PC4000-- before i switched out the ram, my PC3200 ran pretty smoothly. Now with the PC4000 in my computer instead, my computer will not Boot/Post when I have SPD enabled. Also it seems like 2.5 (or 2), 3, 3, 8, 4 are the settings that will actually let my computer boot properly.----- 3, 3, 3, 8, 4 will not. My voltage is set to 2.7, and its on Colonel for DOT, and Turbo for performance. Is there anything that will allow SPD to be Enabled? Is it a real problem? I literally have to reset my CMOS in order to get to the Bios to disable SPD and its kind of annoying.
    My main questions are:
What does SPD do? and why doesn't my new memory allow it to be set on enabled? What are good timings to use?
oh, my computer also wont POST if I boost my FSB past 220mhz-- can anyone help me with that as well?

Please read Rules of the forum and Moan Guide, set up a full signature with ALL system specs.
The main problem here is that HyperX (please tell us part number or at least module size and quantity) PC3200 has CAS Latency of 2 (2.5 for 2 x 1Gb) where as PC4000 has CAS Latency of 3. Secondly, MSI 865 / 875 motherboards use MAT (Performance mode) to determine memory timings not SPD (or even manual in some cases) and even when set to slow, this can still affect your memory's ability to post. (For both of us it seems these mobo's will not allow CAS Latency =3 - set it manually and check with CPU-Z).
    Try this:-
    Frequency/Voltage Control
    Dynamic Overclocking: Disabled
    Performance Mode: Slow
    CPU Ratio Selection: Locked
    DRAM Frequency: 266 MHz
    Spread Spectrum: Disabled
Adjust CPU Bus Clock (Mhz): 200
    DDR Clock(Mhz): 400 (Greyed out)
    Adjust AGP/PCI Clock(Mhz): 66.66/33.33
    CPU Vcore Adjust: No
     CPU Vcore: 1.5250V (Greyed Out)
    DDR Power Voltage: 2.70V
    AGP Power Voltage: 1.55V
If you had to change Performance Mode to Slow, you will have to Save and Exit and then re-enter BIOS for all the following options to be available. If it was already Slow move straight to
    Advanced Chipset Features
    DRAM Timing Setting
Configure DRAM Timing by SPD: Disabled
    CAS Latency: 3 Clocks
    RAS Precharge: 4 Clocks
RAS to CAS Delay: 4 Clocks
    Precharge Delay: 8 Clocks
    Burst Length: 8 Clocks
    Integrity Mode: Disabled
This effectively slows your memory right down and allows you to ascertain your CPUs maximum overclock. Raise the FSB and see how far you can go. Check stability with Memtest and prime95 and once you've found your sweet spot note it down. If you want to benchmark and then repeat the process for 5:4 ratio (Memory Frequency 333 MHz) and 1:1 (Memory Frequency 400 MHz). You can then try manually lowering your memory timing to get the absolute best performance, but FSB MHz is more important with the P4 + 865 / 875 chipset combo than memory timings. Technically, 1:1 ratio should give you the best results, but with the memory timing issues on these boards, my best performance comes from 5:4.
Hope this helps and Good Luck

  • Low latency mem sticks

I have a msi 865PE neo2 mobo and an ati radeon 700 graphics card. I am looking at a matched set of corsair pc3200 low latency sticks. my question is  will these work better in my mobo because they are low latency or what is the dealio?

I use 1G of twinx 3200LL with the timings of 2-3-2-5 and it is very stable so far.  I hear the 875 chipset has a problem with ras to cas of 2 so you have to leave that at 3.  I have even overclocked my system to 217fsb with these aggressive timings with no problem.  Now that the problems with memory have mainly been worked out, the system flies.  With the above settings I get around 5100 in sandra.

  • 865PE NEO2-FI2R + games = not good

I have a big problem with my new computer.
The system is working like a charm in Windows applications and when I'm working with video editing, however I cannot play any games because of the major stutter I get in all games. I cannot seem to find a fix for this problem :(
I have tried with BIOS 1.3 trough 1.5b2 and it only gets worse for every new BIOS I use, now I'm back at 1.3.
    My system is:
865PE NEO2-FIS2R currently BIOS 1.3 and latest drivers
    2 x 512Mb DDR-400 Apacer
    1 x 80Gb S-ATA as system disk
    2 x 160Gb S-ATA at RAID-0
ATI Radeon 9700 PRO with Catalyst 3.7
    DirectX 9.0b
IDE Busmaster disabled in BIOS (enabled before, this was bad I heard?)
    No overclocking (even tried overclock)
MAT at slow (tried every setting)
D.O.T at disabled (tried every setting)
PCI Latency at 32 (tried 64)
AGP aper. size at 128Mb (tried every setting)
using the built in audio chip (tried disabled)
Windows XP Pro SP1 with every update available.
    FSAA off (tried every setting)
Aniso. filtering at 2x (tried every setting)
    every other setting at "performance"
    AGP 8x (tried 4x)
    Fastwrites on (tried off)
My guess now is that when I had IDE Busmaster enabled and installed the Intel INF pack it installed a busmaster driver which was bad for the system. Could this be the case. I did a fresh install on the system two days ago but I didn't try any games until everything was installed, I didn't expect this to happen :(
The system isn't overheated because I'm using many big fans right now to make sure it isn't overheated.
    I'm lost here, what do I do ? :/

It's really amazing how many quality component systems utilizing the 875/865 chipset(all mobo manufacturers-not MSI specific)have been brought down by an inadequate PSU. This is one component that can no longer be taken for granted. I'm no IRQ expert but it's funny how some systems work better with the onboard sound and others with a seperate soundcard. Also I have seen more USB problems with this chipset than any other. I jumped on this 875 chipset as soon as it came out(couldn't wait any longer to upgrade my old PIII - which I'm in the process of rejuvenating for my son)but I will certainly wait out all the bugs on the upcoming PCI Express platform.
