875p Neo and linux

I have been wanting to learn linux for some time now so i installed Mandrake9.1/XP dual boot on my system. But I, in all my noob goodness can seem to get it going. Basically im having problems with all the onboard stuff like sound and the network card. Any one tried this? Can someone point me to these drivers or tell me what im doing wrong?

Maesus--
I was somewhat suprised when I found them myself!
Anyhow -- after you gain some more insight into the extent to which MSI supports Linux, post it here -- I'm interested too...

That's great to hear -- and it may push up my plans to give it a shot again.  (There's nothing like running Linux on some newly purchased hardware, sporting a freshly manufactured CPU & tons of RAM!)
I'm curious -- how did you finally get the ethernet interface up?  And did you have the "CSA" option enabled in the BIOS for the LAN device?

I am running 875P Neo with 2 SATA HDD with RAID 0 on the Intel controller. Win XP works just fine. I am trying to install Win 98 SE. Installation works just fine but there is no regular IAA or IAA RAID edition driver available for Win 9x. Win 98 SE works just fine but it is running is safe mode due to the lack of RAID driver. Is there anyway, I can overcome this problem.

You can use the Promise Controller. There is a driver for Windows 98 SE. I don't think you would see that noticable a difference as the drives now are nowhere near saturating that 150 bus. The raid on the Intel SATA only works in Windows XP.
Just be sure to enable the Promise controller and install the driver in Windows XP before you switch.

  • 875P NEO and NorthBridge Cooling

Does anybody tried to use 875P with some good noiseless cooler on the NorthBridge ? (ex: Zalman ZM-NB47J)
At this moment with the 1.6 bios and with the original cooler the Motherboard temperature is around 53C which is pretty much. (the rpm of te fan is around 6000...)
Please give me some good advice, or share your experiences!
(Please do not come up with water cooling because I will not do that!)

Hey, I just bought a passive ZANB47J for my msi 875p chipset, cause the chipset fan got noisy and it didn't work ok, the system runs fine without the fan, but since i bought the zalman, i have to test it, so i did a clip similar to msi heatsink clip (the board don't have holes for the nb47j), but my question is.............
if you see the chipset, it has a square at it's center and some pins?(dots?) all over it. The bottom of the msi heatsink has a pad that covers some of those pins?(dots?), can i use my zalman nb47j without that pad, is there a problem if those pins?(dots?) touches the sarface of the heatsink? I think that there is not a problem, but if anyone can share an opinion, i would be very grateful

  • MSI 875P Neo and Bios Version 1.6

I have an MSI 875P LSR Board.  It works fine but the system temperature is always running at 50-60 degrees C.
I am running bios version 1.2 and I was wondering if it is worth while to upgrade to version 1.6 as my system is stable.  I dont feel really comfortable flashing the bios I am running Windows XP with NTFS partition.

Maesus-how much lower do you feel the "real" temperature is? Would perhaps 10C be a fair estimate? I'm still waiting for my friend to dig out his thermal probe so that I can get an accurate reading. I too am still using bios 1.2(rock stable with excellent game play)but am considering a bios upgrade if I purchase faster memory which I'm not sure that version 1.2 would make full use of.

  • 875P Neo and IDE3

I would like to run my HD/133 on IDE3 as my bootdisk(W2KPro/sp4). I just can not get it to happen, ideas?  thanks.
    Set up as:
    SATA HD - SER1.
    IDE2- DVD(Master),CD(Slave)
    IDE1 - open
    ATA Config - SATA only
    S-ATA Keep Enabled- Yes
    P-ATA Keep Enabled - Yes
    P-ATA Channel Selection - Both
    Combined Mode Operation - P-ATA 1st chnl
Configure S-ATA as RAID - No

That was done , my options are "AS-SATA", not "enabled" or "disabled". However, what I did just do was to take "cable select" off the drives and use "master" and "slave", which seems to have been the issue??? It is working now.  Thanks.

  • 875P Neo with new Corecell DOT???

I happened to see the new MSI875P NEO with a sticker with MSI new CoreCell chip with D.O.T (Dynamic Overclocking Technology).
Can this be done with the BIOS?

As the 875P Neo and the 865PE Neo2 are derived from almost the same design, I wouldn't be surprised if DOT comes to the 875P soon.
It was first implemented on 865PE and should be possible through a BIOS update as the major components were already in place - the CoreCell chip and the freq & voltage adjustment settings.
I wish MSI would drop the corny military ranks though and use a better technical analogy.
Also, I think the voltage ranges they provide for Vcore, Vagp and Vmem are ridiculously extreme on one end, so maybe they should consider moving the ranges
Also, fix those temperature readings for System and NB.
But most importantly, give the option to fix the AGP/PCI clock!

  • 875P-Neo FIS2R v1.0 BIOS Problems

Purchased PC in June w/875P-Neo w/1ea. 80G SATA, 2ea. 200G ATA-133 w/SATA Adapters as RAID 0, Windows Server 2003, NVidia TNT 32M AGP Video, Floppy, and Pioneer DVD-RW, using 2G Kingston DDR 400 Dual-Channel RAM.  PC in Box with 7 Case fans, and P4-2.8GHz 800FSB w/CNPS-7000 Copper Flower CPU Fan/HS.
Once or twice per week W2K3 would lock up with basic desktop but no taskbar and no keyboard or mouse function (arrow moved, but that's all).  Tried all software and BIOS settings I could think of to no avail.  Downloaded and installed v1.6 from MSI and all seemed OK but as I was going through BIOS checking/changing settings as required my video would start jumping and dashes and underlines would appear randomly on screen.  Problem would get worse the longer I was in the BIOS setup.  I could not get W2K3 to boot after v1.6 so tried the recover process.  This appeared to work until I tried the re-boot after getting the 4 beeps.  Now all that happens is the BIOS wants to continuously recover from floppy beeping 4 times every time.  If I remove the floppy it would keep looking at the floppy drive forever, beeping once every now and then.
I returned the PC to where I purchased it and they replaced the mainboard which seemed OK.  I had the tech flash the BIOS before bringing it home with 1.6.  After I got it home, I began getting the same behavior as before the recover process on the first MB (above).  I decided to see if I could get the system to take BIOS v1.4 since I have another computer with that version that is stable.  It worked!  So far the PC seems OK with v1.4 except I wanted some of the features in the new versions.
What is going on with v1.6?  Have others had probems with this BIOS version?  Is v1.5 safe?
BTW, I used the RAM Disk method of updating the BIOS everytime except during the recovery attempt.
    Thanks,
    UProsper

Actually everything is brand new as of June and all components are matched.  The Video is a 4X AGP (1.5v) and has worked fine before the v1.6 BIOS.  The tech that installed my replacement MB told me the BIOS version in the MB originally was v1.2, but I didn't actually see the screen from the original BIOS before it was updated.  What's strange is two boards behaved the same with v1.6.  I did get the new MB to settle down with v1.4 and I have another computer with the 875P-Neo and v1.4 working fine.
Either v1.6 has issues or there is something unique about my configuration that it has problems with.  I don't dare update my other computer (that is configured differently) to find out.  I really want some input from someone at MSI or someone who has experienced similar results with v1.6 and this board.  I am hoping there is something with 1.6 that will be fixed in the next release.
    Thanks,
    Steve

  • Overclock not "sticking" on 875p Neo

I have a 875p neo and a 2.4C P4.  I'm trying to overclock them via the bios, but I'm not having much luck.
I do not have fuzzy logic installed fyi.
I'll set the FSB in the bios to say 225, and keep the memory locked at 400.  When I save and exit/reboot, on the post screen it correctly shows a 2.75ghz speed.
Then the second I get in windows, I can use any utility (cpu-z, wcpuid, etc...) and it will only show my speed at 2400/800.  So I'll shut down and go back in the bios and my old settings are still saved at 225fsb with 400 memory.
MSI tech support was no help, the just say uninstall core center.  I told them I don't have it installed, they say the same thing.  Just to be sure, I did a reformat the other night, only programs windows xp and cpu-z, and my overclock is definatly not sticking.
I think the core cell is causing my trouble.  For one reason or another, it's not allowing the settings I set in the bios to make it past the windows load.
Has anyone ever experienced anything like this before, or does anyone know how to disable the core cell?
    Any help is appreciated, thanks!

I agree with Uruk Hai update your BIOS as per This thread. I have used these directions for two flashes with no problem.
I have noticed with my overclocking that the mobo adds 1Mhz to whatever I set in the BIOS and it will change memory timeings also. Let us know how things turn out.

  • My 875P Neo won't light HDD LED if using SATA

I just purchased and built a new system with an MSI 875P Neo and Pentium 4 3Ghz CPU. Everything went fairly smooth except the HDD LED does not work with my SATA drives.
I tried everything. Took it back to my dealer and he tried a new board with the same results. Then we grabbed an ATA drive and hooked it up and the LED started flashing. As soon as we used a SATA drive it stopped working.
I'm using two Maxtor SATA 120 drives configured as RAID 0 on the Intel controller. Is this a problem with the controller, the BIOS or what. Is anyone else having this problem?
BTW, I did flash the 1.8 BIOS before taking it in to my dealer.
    Frustrated....

    Thanks...
At least I can stop pulling my hair out. I wish it had said something somewhere  on the box or in the manual or even on the MSI site, that it didn't support the HDD LED. I wasted a huge amount of time trying to figure out why it didn't work. It seems like a dumb ommission to not support the LED. I thought SATA was a step forward. I hate losing the LED feature. Does anyone know if this will this be something that will be added in a future flash update or I'm I SOL? Do other board manufactures support the LED? If not then I guess I'll have to accept it. Thanks for the help.

  • Dvd and cd/r audio connection to 875P Neo

    Hey -
I'm new to the msi forums - so pardon if this is too newbie or too general - but I did try to search the archives and knowledge base and FAQs!
Question is:  Can I connect the audio from both a DVD drive and CD/R/RW directly to the 875P Neo mobo to use the built-in audio - or do I need a separate sound card to do that?  I can't find an audio AUX in.
    Thanks - Howard

There's only 1 connector so I suggest you connect the DVD drive to JCD1, as it's the most logical choice for A/V playback.
Restrict your CD-R/RW to writing or digital playback only
(Right click on the CD-R/RW drive and select Properties - Hardware - and select "Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device")
Otherwise, you would need a PCI sound card - preferably with AUX and CD inputs - and disable onboard sound.

  • 875p neo tweaking and overclocking help needed

    Hi all,
Ive had this set up for a few years but never once tweaked the bios for performance and now is the time
    System as follows,
    875p neo / amibios 3.3
    P4 3.0ghz / 512 / 800
2 gb corsair 1 gb crucial ram
    Radeon (his)  x850 pro agp 256 gddr3
    OCZ powerstream 520
    4 system fans
    2 x 80 gb wd sata
Ive just swapped the ram around to try and get dual working and decided to get the hoover out as well, good job I did because the cpu heatsink had a great wad of dust on the underside  and maybe that explains the 70 degree temperatures and system slowing down.
What im looking for is advice on how to get the best out of the cpu / ram / agp card and want to overclock as high as poss without melting the cpu.
    Any tips would be great,
    Mick

Ok, the combo of all 4 sticks has started causing instability so ive now removed the crucial 2 x 512 and left with the corsair as 1gb in dimm 1 and 1gb in dimm 3. Im happy to stick with this but cannot adjust the bios to make use of the ram's very fast timings of 2,3,3,6 - if I do anything other than auto spd the system crashes, this is a bit of a let down because the options are there in front of me and this new ram cost me a lot of money. I am a little unsure with the ram timings in bios as there are 5 timings and I only have 4 timing specs from the corsair website, the 5th timing in bios is dram burst length and I dont know what I should set this too ?
Yes I believe I have a northwood and I can now try ddr volt at 2.7 and 2.75, this option is now available after removing the other sticks.
If anyone can suggest a way of getting the best out of these 2 sticks I would really appreciate it.
    Cheers

  • Probems with msi 875p neo Fis2r and network controller driver

Hi guys just wondering if anyone could help me with my msi 875p neo FIS2R and problems with the network controller driver/network card.
I'm running xp on a computer my nextdoor neighbour gave me. I got it working fine  with service pack 3 installed but then installed a bunch of windows updates last night and the computer would switch itself off before windows could start. Now I reinstalled xp and unfortunately it does not recognise the network controller/card at all now. I tried installing the intel network controller drivers but it stopped because it said no intel adapter/card was installed/present. Could anyone please help with suggestions? I tried running everest and under newtwork it doesnt list intel network adapters but I'm pretty certain it is. Again any suggestions?

  • 875P Neo-FISR vs. 865PE Neo2-V

Hi, I appreciate any help with this question. I own 2 different MIS motherboards currently and would like to know which would be the better one to use for my system build.
    875P Neo-FISR
    or
    865PE Neo2-V
    Specs:
    Pentium4 3.2ghz socket 478
2 sticks of PC3200 512mb DDR memory ( kingston Hyperx)
    MSI geforce 6600 agp
    500watt psu ( XG )
Does it matter what board I use?
    Thanks!

875P chipset supports ECC RAM and 865PE/P chipset doesn't.
875P FISR is the 2nd Rev from the predecessor 875P FIS2R and has better support for Prescott CPUs. 865PE Neo2-V is a cutdown version of the predecessor 865PE Neo2 S/LS/FIS2R/PLS/P and has only 2 RAM slots.
To put the 2 for comparsion, I would choose the 875P Neo FISR but if you are not comparing the cutdown version of the 865PE chipset, I would still favour the 865PE chipset.
