875p neo doesn't always boot

More often than not if I shut down the pc it will not always turn back on. (it will "click" like it wants to boot but doesn't do anything more than than.. like the power came on for a split second) If I leave the power off a while it usually will boot. Sometimes I have to clear CMOS to get it to boot.
Then sometimes if I shut it down it will immediately reboot instead. Similarly sometimes when I connect power it will boot without me pressing the on switch. And then sometimes it will "click" repeatedly when I connect the power.
Once it's running everything is fine.
Anyone have any ideas what can cause this?

Id deffinately say PSU problem i have an almost exact match to your system, mine is 100% stable (I dont use CoreCenter, Motherboard Monitor and MSI's WMI program give me random reboots) ...i did have to increase my DDR voltage to 2.7v -after flashing to the 1.4 BIOS

  • 875P NEO FIS2R problems with booting at power-up

    Having problems with booting at power-up.
    Recently, with no apparent modification to system - at power up the system will often not boot.  About 80% of time systems seems to go into a loop with CD/DVD drive light blinking a few times, then the floppy drive light comes on and can hear the FDD run – within 30 seconds or so, this process starts over again.  Power switch LED is on and HDD LED is on (continuously).  All fans are running (power supply fan, case fan, CPU fan and Intel Canterwood 875 fan ).
    Monitor power on light is in power save mode (amber) when system does not boot.  When boot is successful the monitor power light turns green immediately.
    After pressing the reset button several times (varies between pressing reset button 1 time to 30 or more times) system will then boot OK or go into set up.
    Once running there is no apparent problem.
    This mainboard comes with D Bracket containing 2 USB 2.0 ports, and 4 diagnostics LEDs - when boot problem occurs the diagnostic LEDs, give a code that in the MSI mainboard manual states “Initializing Keyboard Controller” and diagnostic LEDs stays in this mode until via reset button provides a successful boot and start up.
    Have reseated all connectors.

    No, second 40GB HDD was installed months before this issue started and is jumpered as slave drive.  Also, no other additional hardware installed for several months before issue.

  • [875P Neo Series] Won't boot, 4 burning LEDS

    Hi,
    My computer, based on neo fis2r 875 with a p4 2.8 ghz 800fsb proc, worked perfectly for 2 years.
    Yesterday it didn't boot anymore.
    - the d-bracket gives me 4 burning leds (this means system booting?).
    - no lights on the mouse or keyboard are burning
    - stripped components one after another, same error
    - system doesn't give error beeps
    - system doesn't give the single booting beep
    - no shortcircuit
    - every fan in the case is on as usual
    Is the cpu or mainbaord dead now?
    Any ideas?

    The pc is equipped with an Antec Truepower 480W PSU.
    Is there no chance the CPU is fried? Changing the mainboard is more work then changing the CPU    .

  • 875p Neo-FIS2R - won't boot from CD

    I am assuming I had a hard drive failure, but not certain.  This was and old (9 years) hard IDE hard drive.   My PC would no longer boot, saying "Boot Failure."  I was able to boot with the WinXP cd and it did not see the hard drive.  When booting with the CD, it took a LONG time to move from the splash screen into the CD boot process.
    I bought a new SATA hard drive hoping that would solve the problem but no success.  I attached the new drive to SER1.  I can see it in the BIOS along with the CD/DVD drive.  Both are selected in the boot order, but it will not boot to the CD with WinXP on it.  The CD was on IDE 2 master.  I moved to IDE 1 master and it made no difference.  I turned off the splash screen and it says it is attempting to boot from CD/DVD but then fails.
    The CD/DVD drive was just replaced with a new unit in November 2010.  The power supply was also replaced in November (430w).
    Any ideas?  Thanks!

    I got it to work.  I tried a new IDE cable and that didn't help.  Neither did trying to load from a DVD.
    Finally, I put an old (broken) IDE hard drive on IDE 2 (CD is no IDE 1, new SATA hard drive on IDE 3).  When I turned it on, it was searching for the second IDE master for a while, so I had it abort.  It then booted right up with the WinXP CD.  The Windows CD then got stuck at one point trying to access the broked IDE drive (just kept making a clanking noise).  So I removed the power from that drive and the Windows install proceeded, and now everything works fine.  I reconnected the other SATA drives (four in total) now and removed the IDE 2 cable completely.
    Any ideas why it worked this way?  It seems and IDE hard drive had to be connected to get the CD/DVD to boot.  I have not tried booting to the CD again, now that everything is working. I will try that just to see what happens.

    After having significant difficulties with my new machine  
    I thought it may be helpful to others to  know how I fixed the Mother Board problems. I have the following configuration:
    875P Neo-FISR

    Two Geil PC 3200 400MHz 500mb DDR’s at positions 1 & 3
        ( CAS 2  6-3-3 1T; 2.6-2.9 V)
    Two Seagate 120 Gb 7200rpm SATA drives on Promise Raid 0
    Generic Cd Reader
    Pioneer DVD Writer DVRA05
    ATI 9700 Pro
    Aquarius Liquid Cooler
    Enermax Fan Monitor
    ( Addictions are bad )
    Open all the boxes and put everything together. Boots up once and then starts active unstable.
    Clear the CMOS and then it fails to post at all.
     No monitor at all.
    Looking at this web site I thought that putting the Aquarius Fan on the SFAN 1 slot may not be playing with CoreCell Chip well. Switched to the Enermax and it boots. Remains very unstable. Reading an email here I changed the DDR voltage to 2.7. System stable but I can’t get the Promise RAID to engage.
    Looked at another email ( Thanks Mr. K. Keenan)

    Reread web site and picked up on the Low Latency Memory issues noted
    in a note ( Thanks Mr. K. Keenan again). Put in some Kingston cas2.5
    333 DDR’s at 1 & 3 positions.
    Fires up immediately.
    Windows 2000 boots and loads. Totally stable.
    Never to be one that leaves well enough alone…
    Set the BIOS under

    Shut down and replaced the 1GB ( 2 x 500) Geil DDR 400’s.
    Rock stable and faster.
    Evidently when you clear the CMOS, the board resets
    the DDR Power Voltage to 2.50 which is too low for
    some of the faster DDR SDRAM’s. Unless you put
    slower chips in you can’t adjust the bios to a higher voltage.
    I would love to know why MSI did that.

    Simply, when you use the jumpers to reset the BIOS all the settings, including the voltages, get reset to the default.  The default power setting for RAM is 2.5v, and I would assume that its difficult to find RAM that doesn't run at that voltage at least well enough to get into the BIOS.  What use would the jumper reset be if it only selectivly reset settings?
    Hi all,
    The system will reset the performance to Slow and the DDR ram timing to default by just 4 unsuccessful boot up.
    Meaning just press reset button for about 4 times and the system will boot with the default setting for the performance and RAM Timing.
    So I do not need to do jumper reseting or open the CPU casing.

  • 875P Neo FIS2R-Slow boot with Raid on Intel + Raid on Promise

    Hello all.
    Here is the configuration I'm trying to set up (and almost did)
    SI 875P Neo FIS2R,MS-6758 BIOS v2.4
    P4 2.6 GHz HT
    500W 6fan total
    2x1G Kit DDR 400
    2x74 G WD Raptor Raid0 (Intel S1-2) Win XP inst
    2x36 G WD Raptor Raid0 (Promise S3-4)
    GeCube X1600Pro
    DVD-RW (IDE 2 )
    Win XP SP2 (All latest updates installed)
    I followed the instructions as they are listed in the sticky (great job btw) and configured the 2 SATA 74G WD Raptor on Intel Raid controller(serial1&2) as Raid0 and install WindowsXP Prof sp 2 on it.
    Then I configured the  2 SATA 36G WD Raptor on Promise controller(serial3&4) as Raid0 and added this  Raid to the  existing WindowsXP installation.
    This set up is working very good once I'm logged into Windows with no problems at all.
    The glitch is that I need 3 min waiting time till I see the windows loading logo.
    I have all the latest drivers installed also IAA and INFs and my bios is as the default values except the changes mentioned in the sticky
    Onboard Promise IDE - as Raid
    ON-Chip IDE Configuration:
    Native Mode
    SATA Only
    Keep SATA Active - Yes
    Keep PATA Active - Yes
    PATA Channel selection - Both

    I did the Win XP installation twice till now, taking care to install INFs and drivers in the right order but the result is the same...3-5 mins till I have a fully operational windows environment and after that all is running like a dream.
    Now, I've searched in the forum and saw that many more people have the same problem but never read the solution to it, so if someone has ever found the way to solve this or has the same configuration please tell me how he did it. Even if someone knows that it can't be solved just drop me a line telling me so. Altough the system is running smoothly I find the 3 min waiting time unacceptable and frustrating. I've run out of ideas so please help me.

    are both raid arrays setup with the same stripe size?--> Yes Both arrays are configured at 16k stripes
    do you see both the intel and the promise bios setup screens?-->Yes both screens (Intel(R) RAID... and Fast Built (tm) ...)appear almost instantly after MSI's logo screen showing my Raid arrays in Normal status. The delay starts after the Promise's screen till the Windows Loading logo screen.
    how is the raid bootable drive identified in the boot from menu?-->
    Boot Device Priority:
    1st    BBS-0 (Raid): Intel <name>  (---> this is the OS drive on Intel controller)
    2nd   Disabled
    3rd    Disabled
    Try other boot devices  NO
    I have also the option to select the the Drive on Promise which shows as BBS-1 (Raid) FT 378  Ary 1  but I have left it out cause it doesn't have the OS on it.
    is the OS drive labeled as C: and seen as 200GB drive [as one] from the four drive array]--> No as it shouldn't cause these are two different Raid Arrays. The first Raid on Intel's controller with the 2x74G WD Disks indeed shows as one C: 137 G and has the OS on it. The second on Promise controller with 2x36G WD Disks also shows as one D: 70G.These are two separate Arrays with 2 disks each and they show as indented.
     is network boot enabled causing a delayed boot?--> I don't quit understand what you mean. In case you mean what happens  if I unplug the 2 disks from the promise controller then yes if I do that the system boots fast in the Windows even if I leave the Bios setting "configure promise as raid"!!!

  • MSI 875P Neo-FIS2R support booting from USB devices?

    I am building a super computer using the MSI 875P Neo-FIS2R. I would like to either get a USB pen drive, or an external Floppy Disk Drive in place of an internal Floppy Disk Drive.
    Does anyone know if this board supports booting from a USB device?

    I ordered my board as well, however, they were out of stock and it may be as long as 2 weeks before they get more in. If you don't mind me asking, where did you get yours from? I am VERY much excited about getting this board as I only await the MB and CPU. What all are you putting in yours??

  • 875P Neo/Boot from Serial ATA Raptor?

    Hi all,
    I am building a new system with a 875P Neo-LSR motherboard and Serial ATA Raptor drive that I want to install Windows XP on/boot from.  I have it so Window's sees my Raptor drive but it won't let me format the drive.  Any ideas???
    The manual tells me to refer to "Serial ATA/Serial ATA Raid Manual"...well I haven't been able to find that...
    I setup via a message I saw from JC74:
    - operate mode should be Native
    - ATA configuration S-ATA only
    - keep P-ATA enabled Yes
    - P-ATA channel select both
    - S-ATA ports definition (first option)
    - Configute S-ATA as RAID no (JC74 recommended Yes but I'm not setting up RAID)
    This setup lets Windows XP see the drive but not format it.
    I also downloaded the Intel ICH5R drivers on this website and as I booted up XP I attempted to load those drivers and got:
    "File iastor.sys caused unexpected error(512) at line 2108 in d:\xpclient\base\..."
    I'm stuck at this point  ?(

    I read a post by wonkanoby that said that for WD drives make them jumperless so I removed the jumper that was in the right most side (its OEM so no manual...).  
    He also said to set boot order to cdrom, raid so I did that as well.
    I also disconnected my WD 200GD.  
    After making all these changes I am now able to format the drive.  I'm not sure what fixed the problem.
    Knock on wood...hopefully I can get everything else working

  • 875P Neo-FIS2R boot problem

    Hello,
    Just built a new machine with the following parts. Sometimes it boots fine, but mostly when you turn it on nothing happens, no beeps, no visual, no nothing. Also, once in awhile it takes 15 - 20 seconds before it beeps and visuals come on screen. It's using bios version 1.2 with all default settings by shorting out jumpers. (It gives different voltage settings when reset by jumpers vrs utility.) Once it boots it runs fine, even though memory timings are 2-4-4-6 SPD instead of 2-2-2-6 SPD that my memory modules are suppose to be. However when I manually change to 2-2-2-6 the bios shows that but CPU-Z still shows 2-4-4-6, thats a different story though which a bios update would probally fix. Right now all I want is for it to boot consistently, every time. Ive tried a different power switch and a different power supply. Neither helped and this is driving me crazy, somebody please assist or post any information you might feel would help.

    I have /had same problem with Neo 875 and corsair TWINX512-3200LL and bios V1.2 It has something to do with mem settings and/or Vdimm voltage. At this moment it boots fine but I can't explain way. It seems that this kind of memory is very sensitive for the Vdimm voltage. 2.5V is to low and some systems refuse to post. (see the bios 1.4 flash problems) Must user use 2.6v; 2.65v or 2.7v. Check out if you can find a stable setting. Bios v1.2 uses default SPD settings. you can't change them. Although after bios reset (removed battery) I get some different values with cpu-z. 2-2-2-6 I don't understand why I get those values in CPU-Z. I don't believe that my system is running with those settings. I think it's running with default bios 1.2 settings 2,5-4-4-6 but who knows?
    A lot of users had dead MOBO's when they flashed to v1.4. The reason isn't found. Some moderators say the didn't wait for the DOS prompt after flashing (Could be) Some users can confirm they did. Maybe it has to do with the corsair memory. If you do a search you will find a lot of usefull information (bios v1.4 and/or MOBO hangs on keyboard initialisation)

  • 875P NEO-FIS2R no boot with memory problems

    I just got a NEO FIS2R board, a P4 2.6C, and two 512MB sticks of OCZ PC3200 Premier DDR.  I installed the board and connected only my hard drive, video card (GeForce4 Ti4200), both sticks of memory, and CPU (on a 300W PSU).  At first, the board would eventually make it to the "booting OS" stage, after spending a little time on "initializing video" (normal) and "assigning ISA" or something like that (don't know what that is, since the board has no ISA slot).  Unfortunately, although my monitor's light changed from yellow to green, meaning it was getting a signal, the screen remained blank.  I gave it a few minutes and finally turned off the computer.  After reseating the video card and memory and disconnecting the hard drive, the same problem occurred.  Finally, I took out one of the sticks.  After this, the computer hung on that ISA thing for about ten seconds, and then went back to "detecting memory" and gave a 2-1 error beep.  I switched between the two OCZ sticks and also two sticks slow generic PC2100 memory that I had in my old computer and I know work fine.  Eventually the computer stopped pausing at the ISA stage and went to the memory detection after only a second or so.  Since the video was obviously acting strange, I disconnected the video card so the computer contained only CPU and memory.  The bootup sequence was the same, except that in place of the single beep during video intialization, it gave me a 2-8 error code.  Finally, I took the board out of my case and laid it flat on the wooden table and tried again.  Still no boot.  I also cleared CMOS several times throughout this procedure, so that shouldn't be the problem.
    Can anyone figure out what's going on here?  It's especially confusing to me that the computer booted all the way (sans video) at first, then started having memory problems, and that the system passes the initial memory test but then goes back to it after that ISA thing (this is all according to the D-Bracket).

    If you're wondering whether the Kingston HyperX RAM you're looking at is the same as the Kingston RAM you've found on the compatibililty list, the answer is NO.  The RAM from the list that you're referring to has a model number that starts with "KVR", which stands for "Kingston Value RAM".  HyperX RAM has model numbers that start with the letters "KHX".
    You might also note that there is no listing for any of the HyperX stuff on that compatibility chart.  However, I have seen posts from several people on this forum who seem to be using HyperX RAM with no problem.  I suspect that MSI hasn't updated that list in awhile, because there are no listings for many of the newer PC 3500, 3700, and 4000 RAM models.
    I personally went 512mb (2x256) of OCZ PC3200EL DDR RAM, it is listed as 'OCZ (PN- OCZ400256EL ) PN- OCZ400256EL' on the compatibility chart.  I had plenty of problems trying to run a set of Corsair TwinX 3200PCT ver. 1.2 on my 875P NEO board, and I settled them by switching over to the OCZ RAM only because it was listed.  While it wasn't my first choice I'm pretty happy with it because so far it's been running stable at CAS 2,2,3,6, with the voltage at 2.65.

    I've used the following BIOS settings in my tests:
    Fail safe defaults and Optimized defaults
     - Tried to enable/disable: FDD Controller, HT, onboard LAN, with no effect on the problem. Other settings follows (different also tried): slow memory settings, 2.60-70V memory voltage, 128 MB AGP arperture size. All others standard.
    BIOS 1.6 runs the best, 1.7 has the same effect as all the other lower revs. The problem persists in 1.8 but also decreases system performance noticeably.
    The actual problem:
    The system refuses to boot up. In 40 cases the system boots once.
    The D-LED's signals either a keyboard controller init msg or AGP init msg, randomly.
    In the cases where the system does not boot, it does not either light the case front panel's power LED or signal any HDD activity (drive gets spun up due to poweron, etc).
    The system does not beep in any way when it refuses to boot correctly.
    I've tried changing the PSU for a enermax 430W one with no effect (voltages were ok with both), tried changed memory for some TwinMOS-winbond with no effect, tried changing graphics card for a MSI GeForce 4 MX 440 AGP with no effect, tried to boot without HDD attached with no effect, tried to use other PS/2 mouse and keyboard and without both without any effect, verified clock battery to be fully functional (tried with brand new battery also), removed and also replaced floppy drive with no effect, had machine unplugged for over 120 minutes without bios battery for total reset with no effect, tried to boot machine without AGP card at all - no error beep/change in D-LED info or likewise effect, tried to boot machine without RAM at all - no error beep/change in D-LED info or likewise effect.
    When the machine is operating CPU temperatures are within normal ranges (43-53 C) and the CPU does not throttle down the speed.
    Typical error flowscheme:
    System running -> I shut it down or choose reboot -> System powers down and fails to powerup with one of the above D-LED infos.
    ->
    I have to hold down power for 3-4 secs for the system to poweroff, then turn it on again and repeat 15-75 times until system boots up.
    ->
    BIOS settings checksum fails, press F1 and go into the bios to typically raise memory voltage and AGP arperture size.
    ->
    Machine shuts down when choosing save and fails to powerup.
    ->
    I have to hold down power for 3-4 secs for the system to poweroff, then turn it on again and repeat 15-75 times until system boots up. System runs fine until I have to do step one again.
    As you can guess this is becoming something of a problem.
    I got the motherboard & CPU from MSI via DHL delivery when I won a web-contest they had for the board when it was new so I have to send it all the way to Taiwan to RMA it according to my local MSI dealer (which would take 3-7 weeks and cost several hundred in postage with a secure delivery firm like DHL). As the computer is my bread and butter literally as I'm a student, this is not a good choice.
    As you can read above I've narrowed it down to be either the CPU or Motherboard with a 99.99% assurance, and I'm kind of betting it is the motherboard.
    So does anyone here have an idea what to do? I've read over 15 threads about this board and tried random suggested stuff for all kinds of problems with no effect to my situation.
    Any help at all would be greatly appriciated.

    I emailed MSI's support now once again with the same message I included in the top (and went through the autoresponder-resent procedure), no answer yet but we'll see if they get back to me this time. Otherwise I'm starting to doubt if I will ever get it sorted =/
    If so, is the Neo2 boards with the 865PE chipsets more or less as good, as I won't be able to afford one of those 875P Neo boards to replace my current one?

  • Is PXE network booting supported on 875p Neo FIS2R?

    Hi all,
    I have spent a full day trying to get my computer to boot via PXE from a remote server.  My computer is equipped with an MSI 875p Neo FIS2R motherboard.
    relevant stats are as follows:
    Motherboard: MSI 875p Neo FIS2R
    Ethernet Card: Integrated on Motherboard (Intel 82547EI (CSA Interface Gigabit LAN))
    The PXE server to which I am trying to connect is running Windows 2000 Server and is configured with Windows Remote Installation Service.  The server has been tested with another pxe client (my laptop) and I am able to boot over the network succesfully.  It looks like everything is configured properly on the server side.
    I am using the msi motherboard's Intel 82547EI integrated ethernet controller when attempting to connect to the server.  I do not have another PCI ethernet controller that I can try as an alternative.
    I could not find any mention of network booting in the boot sequence section of the BIOS configuration, nor anywhere else in the BIOS settings.  I have made sure the integrated ethernet controller is enabled in the BIOS.
    I also upgraded the BIOS to the most recent version (2.4) but there is still no sign of any 'network boot' settings in the boot sequence nor anywhere else in the BIOS settings.

    Note that BIOS version 2.2 specifically mentions:
    "This BIOS fixes the following problems of the previous version:
    - System cannot login to PXE server without floppy drive installed."
    This seems to suggest that the motherboard supports PXE.  While I do not have a floppy drive installed on my machine, this BIOS update indicates that a lack of a floppy drive should not pose a problem.
    When booting the computer I am presented with a few keystroke options, one of which is to press F12 for a 'Network Boot'.  After pressing F12 I receive no indication that the computer is attempting to contact a PXE server and the computer boots into Windows XP as usual.
    I have searched the MSI forums and have yet to come across a solution.  Signs point to there being PXE support but I must be missing something.  Can anyone give me any definitive answers here?  Thanks in advance.

    I've since been in contact with MSI technical support.  Oddly they cannot seem give me a definitive answer on the support of PXE in MSI motherboards so again I'm turning to you guys.  I'm really hoping someone out there has some experience with PXE and any sort of MSI motherboard.  Surely someone must have run into this issue before.  Anyone?  Anyone at all?

  • My USB mouse doesn't always start at boot.

    After updating from Arch 0.7.1 to 0.8, one of the big pile of bugs I had was that my USB mouse doesn't always start at boot. In fact, when I start the computer, the red LED in the mouse lights up but sometimes it switches off after the menu where I can choose to use Arch linux or .. Arch linux.
    So, the mouse switches off before I startx one time on two. When it happens I just deplug and replug it but I hate to do that.
    Need some help.

    I've got a 875P Neo-FIS2R MB, MS-6758 (v.1.x) with AMI Bios 1.6.  Before purchasing a USB Flash drive, I'd like to know whether this MB can boot from it.

  • 875p Neo - PC halts on Cold Boot (Initalising Keyboard)

    Everytime I press the power on button on my PC you can hear the power start up, cd and dvd rom light come on and hard disk light comes on for a short period of time.  If you then press reset or press the power on and off again - it all springs to life !!!!!   !!!
     :O  This problem is Pi*#ng me right off!!! Loads of people are complaining of it - what are you doing about it MSI???
    I Cleared the Cmos, upgraded to 1.4 bios but that made no difference.

    I looked at the MSI manual, which said to look at the back of the machine at the D-Bracket LED’s, which is supposed to tell you what is wrong. Every time the fault happened the LED’s pattern (according to the manual codes on page 10) showed that it was the “Initialising Keyboard Controller”.
    I Changed the Keyboard but the problem still exists. I pulled the machine apart bit by bit to see if any one piece of hardware was the cause - but the problem still occurred! I even tried another PSU and hard disk but NOOOOOOOOO! didn't work.
    My mem timings are set by SPD and I have tried lower settings.
    I have sent a more detailed version of this to MSI Tech Support 3 days ago - BUT HEARD NOTHING. Arrrrrggggghhhh !!
    Anyone with any solutions??? PLEASE HELP!!!!
