8800 GT freezes, only during Windows gaming

Hi all!
Got my Mac Pro last week, added 8gb of OWC ram and 3x 750 F1s and yesterday a NEC 2470WNX. Could not be happier performance wise in OS X..
I have one problem though. I got the 8800 partially for some gaming performance asides from work, and have installed Medieval 2 Total War and Half-life 2 (on a windows physical disk, NTFS). In both games I get crictical freezes, solved only by reboot (hard or the machine actually restarts by itself sometimes, after a minute or two.)
Details:
- The mouse stops, but then gets moving again with everything else freezes. After a while, the mouse also stops
- The sound shifts from headphones to onboard speaker, for no apparent reason
- I had one pixelmayhem-crash, but besides from that the screen just freezes with no graphical errors.
- I tried to lower several gfx details, just not the rez (I WANT to play native 1920*1200)
I installed the NVIDIA drivers, with no change. The system is 10.5.2 with gfx update.
Thanks for any help!

Hello.
I'm sorry you're having Windows/MacPro problems. I installed my XP Home on a different hard drive than my OS X drive with Bootcamp Assistant, and on the install of XP, I let it totally format the drive with NTFS. It took a while, being a 120gb hard drive. I then installed XP, inserted the OS X Leopard disk and installed all the XP drivers (32-bit), validated windows via internet, and upgraded XP fully with all the critical stuff.
I installed:
• Avast! Anti-virus (Free), let it update itself fully
• CCLeaner (cleans, repairs & fixes registry, etc.)
• Spybot Search & Destroy (Free), let it updated itself fully
• PerfectDisk 8
• City of Heros (let it update itself fully)
After all this was done, I ran PerfectDisk and optimized the hard drive, scanned for Viruses, Spyware, cleaned/fixed registry.
Back on the Mac Side of things, I used the WinClone application to make a backup of that Windows XP drive to an HFS+ drive (image) in case anything goes wrong..I'll be able to restore it fully.
So far, so good. No crashes, hangs or weirdness. It lets me play my game(s), and when I'm done, its back into OS X. If something gets wonky, I'll format the drive and restore it with the Winclone.
I <3 my Mac Pro running OS X and Windows XP (32-bit)! No other computer I've ever owned can even begin to come close to this near-perfect machine!
-Mark
PS - If you don't want to use WinClone, and have another NTFS drive on your system, I'd highly recommend Acronis True Image Home for making a perfect image of your Windows Drive. If something goes wrong, you simply boot the machine off the True Image CD, and tell it where the saved image is, and it will format & restore your XP/Programs as good as new.

  • Equium A210-1C4 freezes frequently during Windows 7 startup

    Hi,
I have a Toshiba Equium A210-1C4 laptop and upgraded it to Windows 7 a while ago. I have a problem whereby frequently the OS freezes up whilst starting. This occurs frequently and happens after the 'Starting Windows' text appears but before the windows logo appears. When this happens I have to press CTRL+ALT+DEL to reset the system and bring it back to life, Windows 7 starts normally after this.
I have tried reinstalling Windows 7 and it still doesn't work. I am using the 32bit version if that makes any difference. I have installed all the Toshiba drivers using the [Toshiba Software Installer|http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/downloadDetail.jsp?soid=2475695&pf=true] and the problem still continues.
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi
Would recommend checking the HDD firstly.
There is a nice tool called Drive Fitness Test which could be downloaded from some 3rd party pages.
The tool is freeware and helps you to run some HDD diagnostic tests.
If the HDD would be ok, then the next step should be the RAM check.
The tools like memtest86+ could be used in order to test the memory.
But even if no errors would be detected, the RAM might be still affected I recommend testing the notebook with new RAMs
By the way: check if BIOS is up to date!

  • MSI x99 Gaming 7 Crashing during Windows UEFI Boot

    Hello everyone,
I'm dealing with a strange problem here and i cannot seem to find any solution. Yesterday i updated my m/b bios from H.8 to H.9 and everything worked fine but 30 minutes later during some regular windows and drivers updates i restarted the machine only to find it crashing during windows loading logo when booting. I initially thought to be something about the new bios update (or windows/drivers updates) so i switched to the back-up bios ,updated it to H.8 (which i was using before) and did a quick format but the problem still occurs.
I pinpointed the problem to be something in the bios (bios update resets settings to defaults both when i updated to H.9 for the main bios & H.8 for the backup bios) and the UEFI settings for windows 8.1 since  it doesn't occur when i disable the "Windows 8/8.1 Feature". What exactly does this feature do? The only difference i saw was the loading logo , now i see MSI red/black picture with the small circle-dots loading instead of a Black screen with white MSI logo if i enable the feature.
My system is new (three months old) and i never had any crash or lock-up anywhere (nor it is overclocked). All settings in the bios are default except the "Boot Mode Select" is UEFI and the "MSI Fast boot" is enabled. Windows 8.1 64Bit are installed in UEFI mode.

Ok ,seem to have some updates:
First of all i was wrong about the SATA ports i was using (my second GPU blocks the view of the ports).
    - SSD was connected to SATA3 while the other two HDD's to SATA10 & 9
I first disabled Samsung RAPID mode (you never know). Then i changed the SSD from SATA3 to SATA1 port and didn't connected the other 2HDD's at all. Enabled the "Windwos 8/8.1 feature" & Secure Boot and quickly did 4-5 restarts from the bios and from Windows, even a cold boot. No crashes but i need to do more reboots to make sure it doesn't occur any more. Then i will connect the other two HDD's and check for crashes.
Update#1 . Ok my other two HDD's are connected to SATA ports 3 & 4. After 3-4 restarts & 2 cold boots everything seems fine , no crashes at all. I don't know if maybe after 10 restarts it will occur but i'm confident enough that it should already be present now. So it seems that either Samsung Rapid Mode is responsible or the other SATA ports.
Update#2 . So Samsung Rapid Mode seems to work fine, again no crashes at all. This is getting really weird. So that leaves me with the Sata ports ,now i don't know if i need to change again sata ports to recreate the problem or leave it as it is (working) but then again if it's indeed the SATA ports then maybe something is  faulty. Either way i'll check it.  :/
Update#3 . I think i came to a conclusion. SATA ports 7-10 seem to have the problem.
    - I reconnected everything to the original ports i was using (SSD to SATA3 and 2xHDD's to SATA10 & 9) .The crash happens the second time i restart the PC.
    - Moved SSD to SATA1 , crash happens again at the second boot.
    - Moved the 2xHDD's to SATA 7&8 ,crash happens at first boot.
    - Moved the 2xHDD's to SATA 3&4 . NO Crash occurs.
I have no idea what's going on, the manual states that SATA 7-10 support only IDE mode and AHCI (SATA 1-6 supports RAID 0,1,5,10). For the record i do not use RAID.
So what is the problem? I didn't have any issues at all with the previous configuration. Did any of the SATA port's became faulty when using the "Windows 8/8.1 feature" after the bios update? Should i ask for a replacement?
The last thing i could try is to unistall the Intel Rapid Storage. MSI's drivers site for this m/b has the 13.1.0.1058 version while Intel has 13.6.0.1002 but they do not work as it says platform is not supported. I have the MSI's version installed all this time.

  • Hp Mini 5101 Freezes While Installing Windows....All versions, xp,vista,7,8.....Nothing Takes

I refurbish companies retired computers as part of my business, part of our agreement is the machines all come blank, they delete partitions and wipe the entire hdd multiple times prior to my getting them, Most are as simple as reinstalling windows and any missing drivers and they are complete machines again, I currently have been working on an hp mini 5101 off and on for a couple of weeks now that I have been unable to get to take a copy of windows, and I have tried them all, xp, vista, 7, 8 and none have taken, I tried running ubuntu as a live cd and same as windows during the gui windows loading screen the machine freezes, I even tried popping the hdd out and throwing it into my other hp machine and doing a windows install with an hp windows 7 32 bit install disc, when installed hdd back in machine it again freezes when it reaches the animated windows graphic, I have searched forums, here and the internet in general, and have found no other mention of this occuring, i have found reference to the screen doesnt support it so people see the vista screen instead but i see the windows 7 screen then freeze during the animation. I am assuming (yes i know what happens when you assume, thats why i am here asking for help) this is somehow bios related from their prior use of the machine, I had some toshibas that come in that required a certian mode be changed from ahci to compatablity in order to install windows, I know that the company that had it got it with a vista key and an xp downgrade, I am trying to install 7 on it.
Any other information I may have left out let me know,
Thank you for any help you may be able to give

    Hi MidwayIT,

  • Why did my phone freeze up during update

why did my IPhone freeze up during current update?

I have the same problem.  I plugged in my iPhone, started the iOS 6.1 udpate.  30 minutes later, my iPhone4 is frozen in the "loading" screen with Apple logo and progress bar - only the progress bar isn't moving and I can't reset the iPhone.
Help appreciated.  My iPhone is just a brick with a progress bar, currently...
I can not power the iPhone down, and a hard reset simply brings me back to the progress bar screen on the phone.  I can not restore from backup through iTunes because the phone is locked.

  • No mouse cursor during Windows 8.1 OSD

    Hi,
I have a problem that is bugging me. Not really a biggie but a frustrating one.
When deploying Windows 8.1 using a MDT 2013 TS from CM12R2 the mouse cursor gets disabled when the OS reboots into minisetup/windows.
As long as the TS is in WinPE all is fine, but once rebooted the cursor goes away and comes back only when the TS completes.
The mouse is enabled as I can fool around with it and find where it is by clicking like a madman until a window gets highlighted.
Deploying different DELL workstations/laptops, all with the same symptom.
    BR /T

To my knowledge this is simply because of the Z-ordering of the windows during Windows setup.
The question though is why does it matter? You shouldn't be doing anything interactive a this point in the TS.

  • Clicking on any flash content "freezes" my broswer window.

Hello, so my issue is this: Whenever I try to click on something that uses flash, for this example youtube videos, it "freezes" my browser window.  By freezes I mean the mouse icon freezes as the little clicking hand icon and I can no longer click on anything on that browser.  The only way to stop this is to click on the icon of my browser in my taskbar.  This minimizes the browser.  When I click it again, everything is back in working order.  Until, of course, I try to click on the video again.  I know the browser is not truley frozen, because the video continues to play, and if my click was on the video itself, I can still use the space bar to pause and play the video.  This happens for games using flash as well (and I assume anything else that uses flash).  I tried youtube using the HTML5 trial and experienced no problems.
I am currently running the latest version of flash, and I'm experiencing these problems on Firefox and Crome.  I have followed all of the steps listed here: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/flash-player-games-video-or.html
I have also tried uninstalling flash, restarting the computer, and reinstalling flash.  This did nothing.
    Help?

An update.  I just tried watching a youtube video someone put on my facebook wall.  I was able to watch the video, click play/pause, full screen, etc. without any problems.  As soon as I clicked the youtube button to go to the actual page, I encountered the same problem as before.  I don't know much about computers, so I can only assume embeded videos work differently somehow so that I can watch it?

  • Dispose objects during window closing

I use vb to call java application through batch file (.bat) to connect to another java app to send message. Since the java application is executing in command prompt window, if the window accidentally closed, is it possible to close the connection, terminate loop, dispose objects properly during window closing? most importantly, the program at the other side knows the the connection is closed and message stop sending by the java app? Any suggestion?
    Thanks.

Does your app have a fixed main window from where you launch other windows? If so, don't call System.exit(0) in windowClosing event for any of those windows except the main window and it would solve your problem.
Otherwise you would need to somehow keep track of all the open windows in your application and in the windowClosing method you would check to see how many windows are open currently. If the window being closed is the only window open at that time, call System.exit(0). Else don't call it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Black screen during Windows install

    Hello,
I have a late 2012 27-inch iMac with the GeForce 680MX 2GB graphics card. I'm trying to install Windows 7 or Windows 8 using Boot Camp, but neither works.
In either case, I can use the Boot Camp Assistant to create a bootable USB install disk, download the latest Windows support software from Apple, and partition the drive to allocate space for the Windows installation.
As soon as I partition the drive, the iMac restarts and tries to boot into Windows. But the only thing I ever see is a black screen (no blinking cursor), no matter how long I wait.
This seems like the exact same issue that plagued the late-2009/mid-2010 iMacs,
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3173
In other words, it looks like the drivers included with the default Windows install disk don't work on the late 2012 iMac, at least not when configured with the 680MX.
Since this looks like the old problem but Apple doesn't appear to have provided drivers for the new iMac yet (the older iMacs above used ATI graphics, not NVIDIA), I tried to add the latest NVIDIA notebook graphics card drivers to the Windows install disk using the directions here,
    http://superuser.com/questions/501812/corrupt-graphics-during-windows-8-installa tion
In particular, I used these drivers,
    http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/55125
They're not explicitly supporting the 680MX (I couldn't find any drivers for it in NVIDIA's website) but they do support the 680M and a whole slew of other cards. Thought it was worth a try.
Anyway, that didn't do the trick. Still the black screen for me.
Any ideas? Have others had this issue with the new iMacs?
    Thanks

    OK, I figured it out.
You know how the Boot Camp Assistant gives you three options? Create Windows Boot Disk, Download Latest Drivers, Install. You basically need to do all three at once, from scratch.
I'm not sure exactly when in the last couple of months, but Apple updated their drivers. A few days ago I gave this another shot. Initially I tried using the USB stick I had previously created, but using some of the links at the first post above, I tried to inject the new NVidia drivers provided by Apple. That didn't help. I got the black screen and all that all over again.
But then I just tried to start from scratch, remaking the USB stick while simultaneously downloading the drivers. It then also asked me if I wanted to install a new helper tool. I never got that prompt before. Either that tool solved it, or when it was creating the boot disk now it was injecting the new drivers itself in some different way.
Whatever it was, try starting from scratch and going through all the steps and you might be successful in classic "it just works" Apple fashion. Took them a couple of months, but they got there.

  • EMac freezes randomly, open window turns into broken up jibber

My eMac freezes randomly, open window turns into broken up jibber (kinda looks like I put a photoshop filter on it or something). I can't force quit when it does this, no error message, I've repaired permissions. Any ideas?

This doesn't help. but my first thought on seeing your picture was 'addressing bit failure in the video memory'. Unfortunately, as you already know, the video 'card' on the eMac is a chipset mounted to the logic board, and the only repair I'm aware of is replacement. An Apple Service Provider could give you an estimate but unless your eMac is still within the standard one-year hardware warrenty or you purchased the three-year ApplceCare extended warrenty, that's not an attractice cost-benefit tradeoff.
On the chance that I'm wrong and it's some unusual system corruption, look again for the Hardware Test disc. It can be tricky figuring out where it is; on early eMacs it was always a separate CD, on recent eMacs it's a partition on the Restore DVD, and on models in between, it depends on whether the OS X Install disc was on a DVD or not. You might try booting from your OS X Install or Restore disc using Startup Manager to see if Hardware Test is on a partition.
If nothing else, booting off the OS X Install disk (as if you were going to run Disk Utility > Repair Disk to check the drive) should further confirm if the problem is in the video hardware rather than in the hard drive's OS: if the broken display appears when booted from the OS X Install disc, it's pretty certainly the video hardware.

I've selected the option for Firefox 23.0 to warn me before I try closing windows with multiple tabs. If only one window is open and that window has multiple tabs, I receive the warning. If more than one window is open and multiple tabs are open in any or all of them, the warning doesn't appear until I get to the final open window.

  • Macbook pro early 2008 freezing only in OSX

    Hi everyone,
My macbook pro early 2008 (last model before the unibodies), 2.4 Ghz, 4Gb, 8600GT freezes only in OSX.
I'm typing this message right now on the same computer, but on windows 7, bootcamp.
Whenever I boot up OSX the system freezes every few seconds for a minute, only to resume work a few seconds before freezing again.
I know it isn´t a harware fault, since I can still boot up in windows 7 and use the snow leopard CD, which brings me to the next point.
I´ve allready used the disk verifty (which pointed out errors) and the disk repair (which was succesful).
I´ve also verified permissions and repaired them successfully.
What I´ve also done is turn off the sudden motion sensor.
The last thing I´ve tried is running the software update, making sure the system is up to date.
The battery is a few months old (new one) and the power cable works as well.
All of which did not work. I really don´t want to do a complete disk wipe since the backing up is horrendous.
I´ve read a lot on the subject, but since I don´t use an external monitor or have the unibody one the supposed solutions do not apply to me.
    Thanks for you help!

    Please help me out!
You have already tried the "standard" troubleshooting solutions.  Most times an issue cannot be diagnosed unless the computer is physically examined by a repair tech.
How large is your hard drive and how much hard drive space do you have left?  Not enough space can cause the issues you are having as well as a failing hard drive -
Common symptoms of a dying hard drive are the following:
Hard drive is making a clicking, whirring, grinding, ping pong ball noise or any other type of unusual noises.
    Hard drive is not spinning.
Computer is not recognizing the hard drive.
    Sluggish loading of applications.
    System freezes and hangs.
If you have Apple Care, give them a call.  Otherwise, take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP for a proper diagnoses.
