8800 SERIES....NO MSN?

i just bought my daughter a used 8830 world edition blackberry. She had the 8330 curve but it died. So I call telus and get the phone activated and she can make calls and texts etc...
She had the social plan with the curve and they transfered the plan to the new phone. She can get on facebook but when she tries to get onto msn it tells her the phone doesn't have adequate specs to run msn.  Really???
Telus tells me the phone isn't capable of running the msn app for the social network plan.
Keep in mind, she doesn't have a data plan so no internet access on the phone, just the social plan.
Is this true? She won't be able to use msn?
I've read about 'service books' or something to that affect that may help? Any ideas?
thanks
Haley

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
Refer to this FAQ for general guidance:
http://www.blackberryfaq.com/index.php/What_do_I_need_a_Data_Plan_for%3F
As you can see, there are different tiers of service, each of which enable different services. But, with hundreds of carriers in the world selling dozens of different plans each, there's no practical way for anyone to really track what a specific plan from a carrier would enable. So, the thing I always recommend is for the user to make a list of exactly the services they desire...and then talk to their carrier about which plan, from the carrier, would be required in order for those services to function. The carriers control the services they deliver...so, if they told you that this plan doesn't include that service, there's no reason to doubt that...but you can always check with a different rep...they are human too, so one may know something different from another.
Good luck!

  • Idle Graphics on the 8800 series

Do the 8800 series (8811, 8841, 8861) phones support Idle Display, and are the specifications documented?
The manuals seem to indicate yes, but points to an article that is very old and doesn't seem like it should apply to new color LCD phones.

  • Nokia 8800 Series vs. E72

    Hullo all.
I am due to refresh my phone soon and am wondering if there is any definitive news on the next model in the 8800 series?
I currently have the Arte (8800e) and have had the Sirrocco (8800d) and the original 8800 in the past.
I am of two minds to wait and see or go for the E72...
Does anyone know anything firm about the rumored 88XX Erdos (perhaps 8820)?
    Cheers in advance.

Opps - sorry about mentioning rumours, did not realise it was against the rules.
What I am looking for is a smartphone, primarily for push email and onscreen feed updates, with a similar form factor to the 8800 series.
What I like about the series is it's quality of build, materials (OLED screen), and slide form.
I'll hold out for a month or two and see if anything hits the market.
If only there was a way to put S60 on the Arte
    Thanks,

  • 8800 series - turns off when barely bumped

I have had my 8800 series BB for over a year and if I barely bump it, the phone turns off. Sometimes it will turn back on and other times I have to pop out the battery to get it to come back on. Anyone else have this issue and if so, what did you do about it?
    Thanks.

Remove the OS altogether, then reload with latest for your carrier.
If your issue is resolved, put a checkmark in the green box that contains the resolution.

  • 8800 Series / Provider

First, I'm considering getting rid of my tiny Pearl and replacing it with an 8800 that is quad band so that I can use it in Europe and China. Everything that I have read about the 8800 series does not mention international usage. Does anyone know which 8800 models are quad band?
Second, I've had T-Mobile as my provider for years and while their partners overseas provide decent reception and service, their reception quality here in California has deteriorated to the point where I cannot stand to use them on a daily basis anymore. Granted that that T-Mobile is cheap and their full data plans attractive but they are giving back what I pay for. Any recommendations for a better provider with better reception in CA and exceptional international service would also be appreciated.
    Thanks again.

I guess you are talking about the 8830.

  • Desktop Manager doesn't recognize blackberry 8800 series

Hi.  I have a blackberry 8800 series and it is having trouble being recognized by the blackberry desktop manager plugged in via the USB cable.
The blackberry desktop manager is version 4.6.  It's running on a Windows XP laptop.  The account has full administrative access to the laptop.
If you look at the Windows device manager you'll see the blackberry listed.
When you open the blackberry device manager the blackberry PIN is seen for a brief time then it is gone and you see "none".
There is one funny thing that happens.  When you originally plug the blackberry in and then turn on the Device Manager, I see a quick install screen come up.  That screen goes away quickly.
I've done a clean uninstall of the software.  Reinstalled.  Taken the battery out and put it back in.  Placed the blackberry USB cable in every port still no dice.
I've seen numerous posts on the Internet and on this board with similar issue but, none really solved.
Has anyone seen this strange installation window come up?
Thanks for any help.  I really don't want to wipe out either the blackberry or OS on the laptop as there is a time constraint.

I believe that the most recent updates are on the laptop but, I'll check again.   I'm nervous that this is an issue with the laptop.  It's an older Sony Vaio and may not be able to handle the 8800 series.  I looked on Sony's website and updated the Vaio with the most current firmware

We are considering migrating from 7900 series phone to the 8800. On our current devices when a user is not logged into a hunt group it is displayed on the screen. With the 8800 we noticed the only way to tell your current status is to press the hunt group button. Is there anyway to bring back the notification for when a user is not logged in?

  • 8800 series (carbon arte) - OMA email notification...

Can someone please tell me if this phone will actually work with Outlook/Exchange mail. The specifications say that the phone uses OMA Email Notification, but I can't find any reference to it being used by anyone or how it actually works ?? Thank you.

OMA just enables the phone the ability to accept push email, unfortunately, just not Microsoft Exchange email  It will allow push email via IMAP (Gmail for example).

  • 8800 Series / Intelligent Proximity: Calling mobile contacts

Imported the contacts from my mobile phone, but it seems I can only call those contacts when it is initiated from my paired mobile phone.  If I disable Bluetooth or try to call from my IP Phone extension, I'm able to view the contacts but the Call softkey is disabled.
Any way around this?  Ideally when users are in their offices they'd prefer to make calls from their office line, not their mobile.

  • 8800 - OS doesn't seem to upgrade

    This is rather weird...
My 8800 lists the version as v4.2.1.72 (in options->about)
    I've downloaded 4.2.1.79 from blackberry.com:
I've run the install routine several times, apparently successfully.
However options-> about still lists the version as 4.2.1.72.
    Any thoughts?

I would recommend you go ahead and upgrade all the way to latest version released for the 8800.

  • Nokia 8800 Sirocco - good or bad buy?

I'm thinking of entering into my first contract tomorrow and wanted an Nokia 8800 Sirocco
My friend works for a phone shop and can get me one on Orange.
Would anyone avoid it? I heard the battery life was terrible on the 8800, is it the same issue with the sirocco? Also, I have a N70 at the moment but don't use email, from reading the forum it appears people are having a lot of trouble with email? Is it something that goes wrong even if you don't use email?
Any advice would be very welcome
    Cheers

Ive read and heard from friends that the battery has been improved from the 8800 series although it is supplied with two batteries also.
I have the original 8800 and im very satisfied with it.
I dont use the camera and music, video and bluetooth functions which all add up to drain the battery.
I get 2-3 days from each battery.
The scricco has a better camera {which i dont use} and has the powersaver option cured. ie : it scrolls down the screen unlike the 8800 which does not which in time caused the lcd screen burn. It has also a better keypad, although im not sure about the thumb indentation on the slider..lol
My advice is go for it and you have been offered a decent contract too !!
I would try for a 12 month contract tho.
Some users have experienced difficulty when attempting to use the e mail function as it disappeared from the menu system when accessed. If you use e mail from your service provider then ask to try a demo fone to see what happens.
I dont use it myself as my provider gets enough money from me as it is..lol
Good luck with your choice and yes im well jealous....

  • 8800 won't boot, tried wiping and reinstalling OS to no avail....

I have an 8800 that won't boot! The red led stays solidly lit for a few seconds after putting in the battery and then nothing else happens...
I've tried using JL_Cmder to reinstall the OS but it wouldn't connect so I went about it the alternate way and it goes thru the first couple steps and then when it tries to reconnect it fails and gives me the message, "could not reconnect during multistage load operation".
Is there anything else I can do to try to get this thing to boot up?

That error is in regard to a low power USB port.
Keep trying, or try another PC.
EDIT, eh, it looks like you have bigger problems anyway:

  • 8800 upgrade attempt lost usage and flashing red light. No response.

Thought I'd upgrade from 4.5.011 to 4.5.018, at the suggestion of the desktop manager. Things were okay until it stopped. Fatal error message, flashing red light...nothing else. Attempted again, and again. Gentleman at BB store did the same thing. He thinks it's unrecoverable.
I've tried an overnight battery pull, apploader attempt through C and D drives, Problems with applications and software (exe v axl...) Other ideas?

I've tried it 3 times. The program erases the application and then begins loading, which gets about 20% of the way and then stops. Message is communications failure A:0x0000000E. And the red light, which was out while the process was running, comes back on. 2 flashes, stop, 2 repeat.
Point of info. The screen never came on during the erase.
    I will keep trying...thanks.

  • 8800 Sircocco - Help required please

Hi ther, just bought this phone and have a few problems hoping somebody can help.
    1. Anyone had problems hearing the other caller? I have difficulty, tried increasing the volume etc but to no avail.
    2. How do you add / edit the voice commands in the contacts? I want to use my bluetooth but It wont recoginse the "default" name tag given to all my contacts..
    Thanks in advance..

I don't own the Sirocco Edition but the 8800 original. Don't mean to offend but, are you making extra sure that the ear-piece for the phone is properly positioned? Also double check that there's no plastic over that part of the phone. One of the things about the 8800 series is that unless the portal for the incoming speech is right over your ear, its pretty much inaudible. For some reason it seems to be especially problematic with this type of handset. Otherwise, the only other reasons I can think of are that you might have some signal issues where you're located, or it could just be faulty. Try it out in lots of different environments and positions and see what happens.
The voice tags are very likely automatic, (similar to the way they are in the N80, or 6233, etc) and you can't edit them per se. They do take some getting used to but the phone becomes better able to recognize tags the more often you use them. To make voice dialling easier, try looking in the options under each contact to see if there is a possibility for adding a nickname, and then try checking to see whether the phone will recognize the nickname for calling that person. One last resort is to check first how the phone pronounces the tag for each default. You might find a slight difference in emphasis or inflection which will make all the difference between getting the right number and no match at all.

  • 8800- Fake or Not?

hi, I want to buy the old 8800 from Ebay.On the keys are some asian signs.
But he says thats original and there stands "Made in Germany" inside
could it be a fake or not?
    thx

    anilnova,
8800 series phones are one of the most faked phones put up for sale on eBay and the like. It's better to stay away from them. Buy it online only if you have some concrete gruarantee that the seller will return the money if you find that the phone is a fake.
Bear in mind that the pix of the phone can be faked, the product code can be faked... If you can get the IMEI, you can verify it at this site, so that you can be sure that the phone that is supposedly being sold to you is an original.
    Good luck
