8800GT + 1st gen MP = PROBLEM

I ordered the 8800GT kit for older Mac Pro's from Apple store, and it has been installed 1 week. Running updated 10.5.2, by the way. Everything seemed fine for the first few days. My normal mode of operating is to 'sleep' the MP when done, and wake it with a key hit. I'll go weeks at a time without powering off/on. Oh, replaced a perfectly good X1900.
What normally happens with the 8800GT upon waking is, the card fan runs full speed for 10 seconds or so, then down to 'idle' and everything is working as expected.
A few days ago, I hit a key to wake, the 8800 fan comes on full speed as always, only it stays on full, and there is no video - the monitor stays black in sleep mode. After many minutes, I finally held down the power button to turn off, and then turned back on. It seemed to boot and work properly again.
But now it is happening every other day upon waking, 8800 card fan stays on full, there is no video, and I have to do a power reset.
Anyone else had a problem like this? In the meantime, I've put the old X1900 back in and will sleep/wake all day today to make sure it is not some other hardware problem that has surfaced coincidentally. So, anyone else?

here a general update to whom it may concern
my latest reply from a apple product specialist how was very good and helpful but only
give me this to my upgrade answer !
i want to upgrade my graphic card to 8800 and run tiger on my 1st gen macpro
here it goes:
"This article indicates what cards are supported in what machines: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305346
Your Mac Pro is the first generation, and did not have PCI-Express 2.0 slot like the current generation does have.
Unfortunately, we don't foresee the release of any drivers for the 10.4 OS on this machine.
In regards to the second issue, we also don't support two video cards in two slots, using a different one for eash OS, there is no supported way to do this."
"Unfortunately, the latest version of the Mac Pro will not run Tiger, as it was manufactured after the release of Leopard, therefore the drivers for the machines hardware will not be available on Tiger."
hope thats cleared some ones Q.
now my Q. IS the 1900xt better then the 7300xt and is the 8800 so much better then the 1900
with priority set to applications not gaming ?
thx
kindly

  • Ipod Touch 1st gen music problem.

Hello, I have a 1st gen Ipod Touch 16gb running 3.13 and iTunes 10.2.2. Tracks play fine with iTunes, but the same tracks loaded onto my ipod will not play, no matter what format they are in( I have tried mp3 and AAC, 128kps and upwards). Done a reset and restore, uninstalled and reinstalled  iTunes with no change.
Initially the first 10 or so tracks would play fine, then anymore after that would not. After a restore none would play. Everything else works well. Before the update there was not a problem, but i need this update as some of the apps will not work with anything beforehand. I am guessing that this may be at the root of it all, but am not sure what to do. I would be grateful for any help. Thanks. stuhux

    Hello again,
all tracks were from different CDs, ripped using 3rd party software and placed in iTunes library as mp3s(all work in other media players), AACs created through iTunes from original mp3s. I can certainly  buy music in the future from iTunes, but it would cost a fortune to replace my existing collection, which is more or less useless to me if I depend on the Ipod Touch as it is. Is it possible to restore to an older working update, as music is the main reason for having it in the first place? The apps will have to be sacrificed. I don't really want to buy another one if this can work. Thanks again.

  • IPT 1st gen upgrade problem...

    Hi,
I purchased and upgraded the software on my IPT 1st gen. Everything seems to be working, but I'm having problems with the calendar. When I try and sync with my desktop, everything syncs but the calendar.
Does anyone have any solutions to my problem?
    Thanks,

Never mind, it started working again.

  • 1st Gen iPad problems with Pages

I have a 1st Gen iPad and have the Pages app, but now that the new Pages app has been issued for iOS7 I can no longer open docs from the cloud in the older app. I saved the docs from my mac as a pages09 file and still can't get them to open. What now?

I spent about 4+ hours with Tech Support on this issue.  There is no luck according to their Senior Technician. He spend time rummaging over the internet offering me solutions with 3rd party apps to get 'iCloud" back with pages, but none of them worked with an "Offline" mode.  This was a big hinderance on myself as well. I am a Tech Writer and had a lot of documents that I needed to send to my Editor...he uses Pages as well...  Once I edited my documents in the New Pages, he couldn't opened them...this is not good.  I know newspapers all around are probably feeling this burn right now.
I have found a solution however, but it requires a previous purchase.  I bought Pages 09 back on 10.6.3 Snow Leopard long before the Mac App Store was opened to Snow Leopard 10.6.8  What I did what continue using that program, denying the update to Pages in OSX Mavericks.  Still though with all the documents I had to open each individual one and resave them as .DOC format then reimport them into iCloud after cleaning out the /Library/Mobile Documents/Pages section.
Now as I am a Tech Writer, I do NOT expect the average user to figure this out or even need to figure this out, this was an unacceptable move by Apple and after looking at the specs, there is NOTHING that would prevent them from making Pages 10 Backwardscompatible for Pages 09 users or add Pages 10 support to iPad.  Since they ONLY allow it to run on iOS7 Devices, kind forces you to run out an buy a new iPad2 or higher.... since I am quite confortable with my 1st Generation, I will continue using Pages 09'  and if worst comes to worse, I will roll back to Mountain Lion,  there was no update feature on that one and never did it bother me about upgrading Pages 09....

  • 1st Gen Charger Problem

Owned my iPod Touch first gen for around 18 months now. Overall the iPod works fine, save a couple frozen pixels (not a major issue).
I come to you in hopes that you can figure out why my iPod has so much trouble charging/connecting. I need to physically hold (with a decent amount of force) the cable into the iPod with pressure leaning the wire up towards the touch screen. This is only a temporary fix, and completely destroys my ability to use my iTrip.
Is there anything I can do personally to fix this? Should I seek somebody who can fix this, and if so who? Should I scrap it and burn a few hundred on a new iPod?

Yes, your original USB cord will work perfectly. I treasure my 1st-Gen Shuffle cord, because it has a much easier-to-grip dock connector than the new ones.

  • Ipod touch 1st gen battery problem

ok so the problems arise again with ipods this time it drains the battery overnight since i updated to 3.13 a month or so ago i dont use it much so i left it in a drawer now i need it and its useless .
1: when i charge it up from the laptop overnight i can play or listnen for hours
but the battery indicator doesnt drop from at all below 100 then just dies and wont switch on. when i connect to my laptop it flickers for a while like it was so depleted it is trying to start after about ten mins i can switch on and the battery reads 100 and will die in five mins if i use it .if i leave it on charge for hours i get hours of use out of it . if i dont use it its dead in a couple of hours .
2: so i have tried restoring back to the previous firmware thinking it was a bug . also the usual off on restoreto factory blah ? shut down all non essential utilities that drain battery life , so as nothing worked i replaced the battery and guess what its still doing the same so ??? is this hardware or software , i was thinking maybe the drive wasnt powering down when shutting down but that doesnt explain why the battery always reads 100 .
3: please intelligent replys only i dont want to hear about battery dont last long or are you powering off or only in sleep mode or anything to do with wi fi or push notes the battery lasted for weeks when i charged it and didnt use it .
ps i,m an electrical engineer with a good base in computing as well and networking so if there are any apple techs out there lend a hand i,m getting ****** off with this thanks

is there someway i can test this.
    Not that I know of.
is the logic board responsible for calibrating the battery and charging ,
It keeps track of the power and displays it in the upper right of screen.
could it drain the battery say by not switching the drive off i use to remember when shutting down after you swipe the red bar it would give you an icon animation of what looked like a wheel spinning and then a faint whirr and clicking like the drive is shutting down .
There is no moving drive. It's all solid state. What you were hearing is electronic sounds being generated from the logic board.
i still get the the icon and animation but i dont hear the click or whirring anymore suggesting that the drive isnt shutting off which may cause the drain but not the battery indication .
This even leads be to believe more that the problem is on the logic board.
do you think its worth pursuing this ?
If you could find a used logic board on eBay, it might be worth fixing, if you could get it cheap enough.

Is there any way to use my iPod between a Mac and PC?
At work I have a PC and at home I have a Mac. I
cannot update my iPod without first updating the
software for the specific computer. Is there any way
    to get around this problem?
As long as it starts out formatted for Windows, it should work on both as far as music/podcasts/audiobooks is concerned, not sure about extras like calendar etc...
    From the iPod FAQ: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60920#faq6
Question: Can I use an iPod formatted for Mac on a PC, or an iPod formatted for Windows on a Mac?
Answer: It is not possible to use an iPod formatted for Mac with Windows. This is because Windows does not support the HFS Plus file system and therefore will not see the drive. When you connect an iPod formatted for Mac to your PC, iTunes will prompt you to restore the iPod.
iTunes will allow you to use an iPod formatted for Windows on a Mac; however, Apple currently only supports using the iPod shuffle in FAT32 format on Mac...

  • IPod touch 1st gen software problem

I followed the link straight from the apple site to download 3.1.1., but I couldn't get it to go onto my iPod touch first generation. I tried another computer, but it says my ipod has the "current" software 2.2.1. But when i plug it back into my primary computer, itunes says there is an update available (3.1.1). But if I try to update my ipod, it just stops halfway and goes into recovery mode, and i have to plug it back into my other computer. I paid for an update I cant use.

  • 1st gen 8800GT EOL

Okay, asking about the availability of the 8800GT for us 1st gen Mac Pro owners? EOL.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB560Z/A
And for some reason someone felt fit to remove the thread.

I was looking a loooooong time for my nVidia 8800GT. It was virtually impossible to buy this card in any retail store or any suggested retailer website. It was chronically sold out or just plain not available.
Let's face it the nVidia 8800GT is pretty much the only high end card, for the 1st gen Mac Pro, with raving reviews.
I was not going to settle for the ati taking up 2 slots, creating noise with the fan and all the bad reviews.
I ended up getting it on eBay and after I put it into my system it has never let me down:
    http://www.pixelgrinch.com/blog/archive/graphiccard_upgrade_for_my_macpro
You just have to watch it there are ebayers out there that try to sell you a 8800GT for Mac which is actually a 8800GT for PC with a flash upgrade. You get them cheap but they are not 100% compatible with the 8800GT for Mac. I personally didn't take the chance and waited for a true Mac 8800GT. It was my best decision in regards of my graphic card needs.
You can smack 2D stuff, 3D stuff, Games, anything at it and it performs like a champ.
It never froze up or caused any problems in 9 month and counting. It is performing exceptionally well operating two of the four monitors attached to my mac pro.
This card doesn't even have a fan thus creates no noise at all. Another plus is it takes up only ONE slot!!!

  • Choppy video on 1st Gen MacPro w/Nvidia 8800GT card

I upgraded my card to the Nvidia 8800GT for 1st Gen MacPro (verified I do have a 1st Gen, but now without the Nvidia box I can't figure out how to verify I received the card I ordered...).
30-inch display will not play video at any resolution smoothly; and it doesn't matter what sort of video source (DVD, iTunes, flash...) or what software used to play video (QT Pro, DivX...). All software is up-to-date. Plenty of RAM, hard drive space, and a 15MBPS Internet connection. Using Intego NetBarrier and VirusBarrier, all current, and disabling them doesn't solve the video problem. Doesn't matter what other programs are running, the problem happens when it's the only thing on or if I've got several programs running on both the Mac and WinXP via VM Fusion.
I've also noticed Internet performance issues even when Speedtest.net shows a good connection. And more system crashes than normal. But I can't say whether the problems are related. The display is fine except for motion video playback.
I don't know where to start on diagnostics... Help please?

k, I zapped the PRAM, reset SMC and searched for more info about the "16x slot". Found this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2838?viewlocale=en_US
which explains what that's all about and how to use the Expansion Slot Utility. And, voila! I had taken the original 7300 out of slot 1 and put the new card in slot 2 for more room, but slot 1 is the only one able to fully support a 16x card. Now all is well:)
I see The Hatter amazingly often in support searches. Thanks muchly! You got a website for donations?

I'm going to guess videos buffer for a while also...
Two possibilities, one is you should close apps on the iPad, the other is your internet speed is not able to handle the demands of a high speed device.
To close apps:   Double click home button, swipe up to close the apps.
To solve internet problem, contact your provider.   Basic internet is not enough for video games and movies.   Your router may be old and slow.

  • I am trying to play my ipod shuffle 1st gen in itunes but it will not play. My windows 7 computer recognizes the ipod and I can easily select the songs on my ipod playlist in itunes but cannot play them. Any solutions to the problem?

I get the feeling some has asked a question "like" this but not exactly that question which makes it really hard for find answers fast to the above question. Therefore, I decided to ask it anyway. Hopefully someone has a good solution that will work.
    Background on the question:
    - I had to erase and reupload song on my ipod 1st gen to my new computer. Apparently the ipod could not be read by the iTunes in my new computer because the playlist cannot be opened in more than one iTunes or in another computer or something like that (this makes no sense). All this was to try and charge my ipod that does not seem to want to charge. It connects perfectly to the computer and I can see the initial blinking yellow lights on the back and front, but won't charge. I am currently working on this problem from other community discussion topics.

Sync works the same way it always has, connect the device, select the content desired to sync and sync.
All the media should be in iTunes already, iDevices are not and have never been backup devices.
If this is a new computer, move the content from the old computer to the new computer.

  • Having problems syncing 1st gen Ipod nano.

I have a 1st gen Ipod nano (i'm pretty sure it's a 1st gen) that I gave to my mother because I got an Ipod touch. She has her own Itunes accout on her own computer and is trying to connect my old Ipod to her computer/itunes so she can use it and download her music. The problem is the sync function is not working. It will not highlight and stays grey and unable to sync. So can anyone help? I thought I was being nice giving her my Ipod nano for her to use but it's no good is she's stuck with my music and can't put her own on.

Your mother will have to restore (wipe it out) the iPod Nano.  After doing that, she will be able to sync her own music.

  • Apple customer support problem 1st gen Time Capsule

Not sure there is any real point to this since Apple doesnt seem to really engage in these forums.  However, I recently had a 1st gen. Time Capsule die per the well-documented power supply failure problem.  After some prodding I was able to get Apple to replace the unit though it was a handful of days out of the replacement window.
Unfortunately the Apple  "genius" did not include my full business address on the shipping label and the unit has been in Fed-Ex limbo for nearly a week.  I have of course since provided Fed-Ex with the full address of my company office.  However, they will not revise the shipment info without Apple's authorization. I have left 4 voicemails for the Apple "genius" requesting they update my address so the unit can be delivered.  So far nothing, nada, zip... I'm glad my own staff are merely engineers, not geniuses.
To add massive insult to injury, today I received a reminder email from Apple that they have a $500 hold on my credit card and have not received the defective unit back.   Really? no sh*t!  I've not received the replacement unit or return label due to Apple's negligence...hello...welcome to automated email ****.  Of course, there is no reply address ANYWHERE to be found on Apple's website.
So, I'm sitting here with a dead network, $500 balloons on my credit card and no way to correct the delivery address on the replacement TC.
    Hey Apple, ***?
This is not the Apple I know and love.  If I wanted Dell quality service I'd have saved the money and bought a Dell.  I hope this is not the start of a long slow slide back into the Apple of the 1990s.

Agreed that an outright trainwreck such as this is atypical.  However, I am noticing an overall steady decline in customer service at the local Apple stores as well.  The "geniuses" at the Pleasanton Apple store are downright rude and unhelpful.  That is why I even bothered with phone support this time.
I think the phone support attitude is what started me off on the wrong foot.  This unit has a well documented power supply defect for which Apple issued a TSB and even reimbursed people who had to replace the unit due to the power supply failure.  When mine failed, I was actually told by the front line genius - "well, it lasted 2 years, that's pretty good".   That is a Dell/Gateway/Compaq/General Motors attitude.   A $500 router should last more than 2 years.  Cisco enterprise level routers last forever.  Several years ago the white iMacs had a power supply problem.  Mine failed 4 years after purchase and Apple cheerfully fixed it without question or issue.  They had it back to me in less than a week.
My expectations for support are commensurate with the price of Apple's products.  It is a luxury high-end brand. For perspective: This router costs more than a complete Gateway desktop computer system.
When you buy a BMW you expect a certain level of service, When you buy a GM expectations are lowered along with the price of entry. I don't expect to ever have to chase down keystone cop problems like this.  My time is far too valuable for that.  This is why I buy Apple computers and not Gateway computers.
Is it typical? maybe not.  Is it foreshadowing what is to come now that the company is back in the hands of the bean counters that nearly ran it into the ground last time?   Maybe.
