8800GT for Aperture and Gaming

Hello, i'm planning on upgrading my base 2600XT to the 8800GT to run games on bootcamp like crysis and others.
However i'm concerned that i will lose performance when i run aperture 2.0 on osx since according to barefeats the 2600XT is better than the 8800GT at core image applications.
I was wondering if anyone had any experience on running aperture and the 8800GT.
Thanks

I don't play games much on my MP, at most Warcraft, Starcraft, and NWN (all under OS X, and all play fluidly with plenty of fps). I do use Aperture a lot, and with the 8800GT the loupe specially works very smoothly, as is scrolling across images. I did have the 2600XT that came with my MP in June, but that came off the same day I got it, since I already had pre-purchased the 8800GT along with many other goodies that I was going to mod my MP with. Aperture doesn't rely solely on the graphics card to work fast. In my experience, the CPU gets heavier use than the GPU in applying the image adjustments, creating new previews and thumbnails, and a fast hard drive (with or w/o RAID 0/1) helps in loading the images faster when sorting through large libraries, and when you double click a thumb to enlarge it. I know Aperture runs a bit slower when I have Boinc running in the background at 100% CPU load. If you don't know, Boinc is one of those grid computing programs that are very CPU intensive. When Boinc is running, the generation of previews can be 2-4x slower, and that also applies to exporting the raw files into JPGs (where a GPU does nothing, it's all CPU). Benchmarks are one thing, actual use is another.

I'm running MacOS 10.7.5 with all updates and did an update last night for aperture and now aperture doesn't open.  What's Zup?  Help!

Also when I do the system update it's not giving me an update for the latest Snow Leopard. I never knew that was available until I started looking around this site and it seems that since I have the internal dual core I should be able to update to mountian lion...is this correct? Will someone please help me and walk me through this. I love my mac I want to have it running like it should be.

  • Annoture - Metadata Bridging Solution for Aperture and iView

    Aperture and iView users:
I just released Annoture, a metadata bridging solution for Aperture and iView MediaPro! With Annoture, you’re just a click away from sharing metadata between these two popular image management and cataloguing applications. Spend more time working with your decisive moments than worrying about double-entry and incomplete metadata!
Annoture lets you transfer annotations from iView MediaPro catalogs to Aperture projects and albums and back. This two-way transfer of IPTC and metadata information means you are not tied to any one application for your image management and workflow needs. Annoture also features a modular interface that can be extended to support additional applications in the future.
    http://www.tow.com/software/annoture/
Users of Aperture and iView can download a fully-functional version of Annoture. The unregistered version will occasionally display a reminder to register, and all images processed in Aperture by Annoture will have a custom “Annotated with Annoture!” tag added. You can remove these items with the full version after purchasing and entering your license code.
    Enjoy!

Congratulations on getting this working and available so quickly! I bet many late nights went into this
It's definitely providing some motivation for me to learn more Applescript...

  • Automator site for Aperture (and OS X as well)

Automator actions require either APIs for the program, or Applescript support. There's no public API for Aperture, and the built-in actions pretty much cover all the current Applescript commands. I doubt we'll be seeing any third-party Aperture actions for awhile.

  • Getting new Mac for Aperture and have a question...

I totally realize that this is a personal preference with no "wrong" way to do it. However, I would appreciate some thoughts so I can form a better idea of how I will set up an Aperture workflow that will work for me for a long time and how to configure my new iMac.
I use the referenced library workflow and store both my masters and Aperture library on my current internal drive with both backed up to externals. I'm getting a new Mac with the SSD drive for apps and OS (and Aperture library as well). The question is, should I get the mega 2 TB internal HDD along with that SSD for all my masters (which would also include my music and home-made movies)?
My current photo storage adds up to only 130GB right now and grows slowly. I don't even think I would double that in the next year. I realize that if I had, say, a 1.5 TB size Masters library, the the answer would be obvious that I would need to store externally because the iMac HDD isn't big enough. But that isn't my situation.
But since I would be able to fit all my photos on an internal HDD (2TB) to use as referenced, is there a better reason to skip the internal 2TB HDD and just get hooked up with some good, high-speed external system and stick with an internal SSD to just handle the OS, music, and apps? In other words, all my media (photos and movies) would always be stored AND edited from an external drive (I will actually edit on the SSD and then move the referenced files to the external). This means that from now on all new Macs I ever get will only need a moderate sized SSD for OS and apps. I would basicallt forever keep all things media on externals.
I hope this makes sense. Thanks for any help with this.

One other thing... the only way for me to get a 1GB VRAM now is to buy the top-of-the-line iMac. That's the issue.
I've seen that also. That's why I added the "If you can wait.." statement.
If you need to purchase before say late October, then the specs you list for the 21" iMac are quite good and the possibility of developers designing GPU threads that require caching in the VRAM may or may not need amounts beyond 512 MB. The fact that Apple offers an upgrade to the 2 GB VRAM video adapter on their high-end machine tells me that they know that the Pro Apps will be able to take advantage of that amount (not that it is necessary for the enthusiast looking to have a good Aperture experience).
SierraDragon has much more experience than I with Aperture, so he may be able to shed some light on this one.
For my part, I run a 17" MacBook Pro (late 2011) which has the 2.5 Ghz i7, 8 GB Apple provided RAM, and the AMD 6770 with 1 GB VRAM. I installed an OWC 480 GB SSD and I am connected to the Apple Thunderbolt Display (because this machine only offers a Thunderbolt port to connect video signals with). Aperture runs fine on my machine (although for some reason cropping takes a couple of seconds now, where it was immediate before the AP 3.3 update). I run Photoshop CS6 and Illustrator CS6 without any issues on this machine, so it is definitely capable of running in a professional environment.
Since your specs call-out a 2.8 Ghz i7, 16+ GB RAM and an SSD, I personally would not hesitate to purchase that machine if you need to purchase soon. I just mentioned the 1 GB VRAM due to your wanting to be able to handle 4+ years of updates to the OS and software. That doesn't mean the 512 GB VRAM won't work great, just that the 1 GB VRAM would be additional insurance (sort of like Apple Care).

  • Printer Setup for Aperture and Epson R1800

After installing the upgrade to 1.5, something went wrong with my printer setup for both my R1800 and my PictureMate Deluxe.
    I've done the following:
    Reset the printer system.
    Reinstalled the Drivers
Attempted to Print from Aperture using about 30 + combinations of settings.
I'm still getting colors that are off and overall dark photos.
    Best Setting appears to be
    Printer Settings
    Print Settings
Media Type: Premium Glossy Photo Paper
    Color: Color
Mode: Advanced (Photo, High Speed, Finest Detail, Off)
    Color Management
    Off (No Color Adjustment)
    ColorSync Profile: SPR1800 PrmGlsy Photo.icc
    Black Point Compensation = Checked
    Gamma 1.10
The resulting pictures appear to be about 1 f-stop or so underexposed and the colors are off (I'm color blind, so I can't say exactly how). I know that it is the setup of the printer settings. If I print the same pictures from Nikon Capture on my Windows computer, the print is perfect. I prefer to use Aperture for my photo work.
Epson doesn't have Aperture and doesn't understand all of the settings. The Apple Care support tech stated that he is not qualified to answer and said to call back when the Aperture team is working. I've got a ton of Christmas gifts to print out!
    Assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    -William

    william:
you don't state in your original posting whether or not you've calibrated your monitors, especially to a 2.2 Gamma. in order to get the most accurate screen->print matching you have to hardware calibrate your monitors. this is by far the single most significant improvement i've made in my workflow. prior to calibration my monitors were set to a gamma of 1.8 which is much brighter than 2.2 and this causes you to NOT correct your images with the additional exposure required for proper printing. my prints were always too dark prior to calibration.
the spyder 2 from color vision is an excellent choice.

  • Which video card for Aperture and dual monitors?

I have a G5 dual 2.0 with a GeForce FX 5200 video card that is driving one 23" Cinema display. I need to upgrade my card per the specs to run Aperture. I have also been thinking of getting a second 23" display. Can someone recommend the best video card for me. I know very little about video cards and have been reading a lot this morning. Thanks,
    Dave

    Hi Dave;
No. PCIx and PCIe or PCI Express are not the same thing.
PCIx is an extended or slight sped up version of PCI. While PCIe is a switched bus structure instead.
Hence they are not the same. That is what all of the big news is about Apple has made the leap over to PCI Express.

  • Use Monitor for TV and Gaming!?

    Nick
Ok, so im moving into college in a few weeks and all I want to do is to be able to watch tv and play xbox on my monitor. The reason I'm getting a monitor instead of a tv is because I can't find a tv with a 2 ms response time(which is what i need for gaming). I'll give you all the information I have and hopefully I can get a solution!
    1. My monitor is an Asus 23" Widescreen LCD (all of the specifications are on the link below (It has a VGA input, DVI-D input, HDMI input, and a 3.5mm mini jack)
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+23%22+Widescreen+LCD+Monitor/2354038.p?id=1218322741725&skuId=235...
    2. The cable provider at my college dorm has a coaxial cable( 78 channels).
    - Now what do I have to do/buy in order to make this work? If you need any more information in order to solve this problem I'll gladly give it to you.
    Thanks,
     Nick
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If the monitor does not have a TV tuner, then you will need to buy a device that has a TV tuner and a VGA output device. In other words, by the time you're done, you might as well as bought an additional TV - unfortunately.

  • What is the best product for music and gaming? I'm looking for an apple COMPUTER. Not iPod etc.

Hi! I am looking for an apple computer that would be good for gaming and music, movies etc. So I would like some input on some different products I'd be able to buy? The types of games I play are downloaded also. Any help would be good! Thank YOU!
    P.S
I'm looking for preferably a laptop.

while the Air can play many games fine, it is not an idealized gaming machine.
examine a macbook Pro model at your local Apple store for evaluation if you plan on much gaming.

  • 13 vs 15" Retina.  Quad or Dual Core for Aperture and IMovie?

Does iMovie or Aperture take advantage of quad core?  I'm debating if I should return the 13" Retina I just purchased for the 15".  Thanks

A quad core will definitely allow you to stack more layers of instruments and decrease your buffer size (resulting in lower latency).  I have a 3.06gHz core 2 duo 17" with 8GB RAM and a mate of mine has a 13" i5 with 4GB RAM and we compared how many synths we could cram into 1 patch before we got system overloads.  My mate's i5 easily handled at least 60% more than my machine....I was blown away by how much difference the extra CPU speed makes.
If I were in your shoes, I'd definitely go for the quad core if you want MS to handle (just about) anything you can throw at it.  This will also give you a few more years of use as plugins evolve and consume more and more processing power.  That's one of the main reasons why I splurged at the end of 2009 and upgraded every "power" feature I could when I bought my current MacBook Pro.....I've easily gotten more life and use out my system than most users who bought the standard config at the time.  I've also just upgraded to a 512GB SSD to get some more juice out of my machine to keep me happy for at least another year before I get a new MacBook Pro.

  • Opening ports for ichat and gaming...

    Hi folks,
When I try to connect to a friend (she's on an Imac) with Ichat or she tries to connect to me (via webcam) we always get the refused error. Also When we try to play Star Wars Battlefront, we can't connect to eachother's computer.
I haven't turned the Tiger Firewall on, so I know the problem is with my Modem, The Speedtouch 530.
I think it has like an internal firewall, so how do I open these ports and what do I need to change in the modem's settings?
I did set the connection type to PPPoe in the Tiger Network setting.
    thx.

    Hi Tim,
Did your modem come with a manual? There may be some procedures outlined in the manual.
    Or google.

  • 27" iMac upgrade priorities for Aperture use?

I am about to pull the trigger on a new iMac 27". Current Aperture librabry is about 700GB and this is my primary computer use. Libraries currently live on a 1T Rugged drive and are shared between an 2009 21 iMac and 2010 13MBP. Things are just too slow and I want more screen space. Trying to sort out best use of funds...so, base config looks like this so far:
    3.2GHz Quad-core Intel Core i5
    16GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM
    1TB Fusion Drive
    GTX 675MX 1GB GDDR5
In terms of more bang for the buck, does it make  sense to upgrade to:
    3.4 i7   ($200)
    3T Fusion ($150)
    680MX 2G ($150)
I currently have a 2T USB 3 external and a 3T Firewire external (Time Machine BU). I am thinking, given I need a mobile solution for traveling and working out of home, keeping the libraries on an external would negate the need to upgrade to a 3T fusion. My understadning of Thunderbolt and USB3 is I would not notice the difference working externally or on an internal Fusion-is this more or less correct? Better to spend the money on an external Thunderbolt when they come down a little more?
680MX is considered a fast gaming card...but might it also "future-proof" (if you can even do that these days!) the mac for graphics requirements to come? Or is it overkill for Aperture and PS? Again-better to spend the money elsewhere?
I am leaning towards the faster processor. Although I hear  mixed things, the tests I have seen do say this will give an overall boost.
I would welcome any insights from others who walked this path...
    many thanks
    NJ

I might be missing something*, but if this is correct:
My understadning of Thunderbolt and USB3 is I would not notice the difference working externally or on an internal Fusion-is this more or less correct?
_and_ you need to access your Library from multiple machines in multiple locations, why not just stick with the base iMac configuration you posted and put your Library on your 2 TB USB-3 drive?  As long as you are not putting the Library on the internal drive, I think your thinking here is correct:
I am thinking, given I need a mobile solution for traveling and working out of home, keeping the libraries on an external would negate the need to upgrade to a 3T fusion.
I run very large Libraries off external USB-3 drives (mounted to an rMBP w. 16 GB RAM and a 500 GB SSD) and find the performance is no different than when using a large Library that is stored on the SSD.  (I have seen no reason to expect external Thunderbolt drives to be noticeably faster than USB-3.)  I think the 3 TB Fusion makes sense in a laptop; for your stated needs, I wouldn't upgrade (you may have additional storage needs you didn't mention, though).
I agree with William about the faster GPU -- but just on a hunch.  I think Apple's programmers have gotten expert at getting performance where they can, and one place they seem to look is the GPU.  For Aperture users, I would say about the GPU the same thing one has always said about RAM: when you buy a new machine, put in as much as (or the fastest) you can afford.  Once you have 16 GB of RAM I would spend some money on a GPU upgrade.
*and if I did miss something, apologies in advance  .
