880GMA-E55 and 16.0 GB (8.00 GB usable)

Earlier this year I built a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine with the following hardware:
MSI 880GMA-E55 AM3 AMD 880G HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
http://www.msi.com/product/mb/880GMA-E55.html

AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition Thuban 3.2GHz 6 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Six-Core Desktop Processor HDT90ZFBGRBOX
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103849
4x G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL9S-4GBRL
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231310
It has been working great, however today I reinstalled the operating system.  Afterwards I noticed something scary in my System Properties: 16.0 GB (8.00 GB usable).  My Resource Monitor shows that 8 GB is reserved for hardware.  The Advanced Properties for the onboard ATI Radeon HD 4250 shows:
Chip Type: ATI display adapter (0x9715)
DAC Type: Internal DAC(400MHz)
Adapter String: ATI Radeon HD 4250
Bios Information: BK-ATI VER010.094.001.045.000000
Total Available Graphics Memory: 3323 MB
Dedicated Video Memory: 512 MB
System Video Memory: 0 MB
Shared System Memory: 2811 MB
Seems pretty high for an onboard video adapter, but still not 8GB.  If I go into the BIOS there is a "VGA Share Memory" option but it adjusts the "Dedicated Video Memory" line, not the "Shared System Memory" line (isn't that backward?).  I haven't figured out a way to adjust the "Shared System Memory".
I don't have any extra hardware attached to the machine (no PCI or USB), so I cannot figure out where 8GB is going.  I tried all combinations of 4x DIMMs and its always the same thing.  However, I tried just 2x DIMMs and my System Properties changes to: 8.0 GB (7.5 GB usable).  That matches exactly what I would think: 8 GB minus the 512 MB reserved to the "VGA Share Memory" BIOS option.  Interestingly enough the Advanced Properties for the onboard ATI Radeon HD 4250 is exactly the same as it was back with 16 GB RAM.  Task Manager reveals I am using just over 1 GB of memory, so not sure what that "Shared System Memory" of 2811 MB is all about.  Anyway, these findings make me think its either a compatibility or configuration problem.
CPU-Z reports all 16 GB of RAM.  The BIOS correctly reports all 16 GB of RAM.  Even Windows reports all 16 GB of RAM however it says only 8 GB are usable.  I did a memtest86 on the RAM and no errors were found.
Unfortunately I don't know if this was happening before I reinstalled the OS.  I would think I would notice missing half my RAM, but I am not sure one way or the other.
I've been crawling the internet looking for hints at how to solve this.  I have confirmed that MSCONFIG / Boot Tab / Advanced does not have anything checked.  I have shuffled my memory around.  Everything is seated well.  POST, the BIOS and Windows always report exactly how much memory is installed, however Windows appears to only use up to 8 GB.  The BIOS does not appear to have a Memory Remapping option as some have aluded to.  I have restored factory defaults in the BIOS.  As far as I can tell everything should be compatible, but I am no expert (MSI shows memory tests for equivalent G.SKILL memory DIMMs of 1 GB and 2 GB, but no test for the 4 GB).  Again, the bootable memtest86 passed for all 16 GB.
Does anybody have any idea what the problem might be?  Hardware incompatibility?  A magical switch somewhere to enable all 16 GB in Windows?
Thanks

Quite sad that a server OS has a memory limit at all
But good find

  • At wits end with 880GMA-E55 power down issue, EDIT: FIXED

Hello all, I have decided to post here in hopes that I can get my problem figured out and resolved. I have done everything I can (and all the searching to go with it) to find a fix to this blasted problem but I just can't seem to narrow it down or am not going far enough.
I recently built a PC I am not completely new at it but it was the first time by myself. I got it put together and running fine, OS installed (win7 64bit pro) and drivers/programs. It is stable and runs great, tested memory and everything else and there are no problems that I can see and it hasn't crashed under stress a single time and there are no errors in the event log anymore. The ONLY problem I have is when I want to shut it down it doesn't power off but instead turns back on and starts booting again. I thought it was an OS issue with a driver/program conflict making it fail at shutdown and reboot, but no matter what setting I change in accordance with the power management or automatically restarting when it comes upon an error, it has remained a problem. It won't shut down; Not from the power button, not from the OS, not from safe mode, not from logging off or anything. I thought it was an issue with how I connected the front panel connectors (and it may be) but no matter what I do to the wires it doesn't change anything. Have I built a ghost machine? Stable but can't power off? Is it a hardware or driver/software issue? I would really like to figure this out, even though the PC runs great I don't want to simply ignore this, as having to flip the power switch to prevent it from rebooting at shutdown is not fun nor acceptable.
I updated to the latest bios (25.3), checked and reinstalled drivers, checked every OS and bios setting related to the issue. Nothing has solved it and I really don't want it to be the mobo itself as that will devastate me. I would Hate to have to send it back in and replace it, the PC is running fine and stable after all, just reboots at shutdown.
    Rig is(Important parts only):
    AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE 3.2ghz
    MSI-7623 880GMA-E55 AM3 USB 3.0 SATAIII mobo
    XFX Radeon HD6850 1GB 256b GDDR5
    G.skill PC10666 8GB (x2 4GB) V series
WD 640GB SATAIII 64mb cache HDD
    Corsair TX750v2 Enthusiast series 750w
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Like I mentioned in the first post, everything related to power management or wakeup in the OS and bios has been disabled.
I cleaned up the errors in the event log however I did have some odd driver/software installs (like the msi software which usually conflicts with the 64bit systems).
I didn't install from the cd I downloaded drivers from the websites and installed those. Live update also ran and installed the network drivers, I went to realtek and reinstalled just in case.
There might still be a driver/software conflict however the only errors in the event log currently are not the ones I was having previously they are unrelated and not serious.
Is the only way to solve such a (sorry) stupid problem is to reinstall the OS? seems kind of ...redundant ..everything works fine except it can't shutdown. I Wish the OS would just shut itself down clearing its memory and then power off the system, but apparently thats too much to ask.

  • E55 and BH-602.

    E55 with firmware 033.002
I added a custom "Earphone" mode: when I switch on the BH-602 the E55 switch from Normal mode to Earphone mode.
I would like to report a problem when the E55 phone is ringing and I switch on the BH-602.
The BH-602 does not connect correctly with the phone, so I cannot answer to the call or sometimes I answered but the caller does not listen me.
    Regards.

Unfortunately there has been some occations where the calendar data storage on the N97 device has corrupted and therefore that specific content type can't be synchronized. Only cure for that problem has been reinstall/update of the device software.
Anyway, we are preparing to release an update for Ovi Suite 2.2 very soon.
Please download that when available to see if it fixes your issue. There are many improvements in place especially in the area of synchronization.
If the problem still persists please provide further details about your case.

  • E55 e-mail issues and solutions.

The main problem of Nokia E55 e-mail (and AFAIK generic Nokia e-mail problems) is there are too much support for email but poorly documented. I just discovered everything I'll write here by my own trying to figure out the problems. This message is also a bug report if Nokia cares.
First, there are many ways to setup an email account (or mailbox in Nokia jargon). Just to name the ones I know:
(Assumption, you got some internet connection.)
    1. Go to Control panel, settings, general, personalization, one touch keys, messaging key, short press and select email setup. Then close the menu and short press the messaging one touch key. An application will start, check for connection and then asks for an email address. If you continue, you'll see that the setup options are few and useless. If you check the task manager by long pressing the menu button, you'll see a @ sign.
    2. Go to menu and select email to start Email 2.1.0 application. Select "new" and settings wizard will start then it starts a screen with email on top. Then, you need to press start and it will show you some commercial (free or not, but commercial) email options together with "other" option.
2.a. If you choose any commercial email provider (e.g.. gmail) and enter your address and password, the application will "detect your email settings" which means your phone will communicate with a nokia server and the nokia server will log in for you as a man-in-the-middle. Then, the application will download a contract in your language and ask to sign it. If you don't accept see 2.b, if you accept the contract, it means the "Nokia Messaging Service" will be enabled. Nokia messaging service is hosted at http://email.nokia.com. (A very bad, confusing name) From now on, NOKIA WILL KEEP YOUR EMAIL PASSWORD (with some poor privacy act based on the unbalanced contract) and Nokia will access your mail in your name, Nokia will be able to change your email settings, Nokia will be able to delete your email messages Just like the well-known man-in-the-middle attack in crypto courses. (See TR's note of Aug 26, 2010 18:18 at http://noknok.tv/2010/05/26/how-to-set-up-nokia-messaging/)
2.b. If you decline the contract or choose "other" that Nokia doesn't know how to access your account, then the application won't enable Nokia messaging service (*) and the application will enable the email access protocols already installed on your phone. Thus, you'll access your email directly and Nokia will not keep your email password. In that option, you may need to enter more server settings. But IMHO, it worth it.
(*) Oh, yes. This is a very good point. If you're willing to use the Nokia Messaging Service but doesn't have a commercial account, you can't enable it. At least, you can't enable it as you pay. E55 includes fuzzy-lifetime service agreement. If you go directly to the site and sign up yourself online, you'll get a trial service agreement. Not the full service you've already paid. (See TR's notes above to understand what fuzzy-lifetime is. Shortly, you can enable it just once for just one person but not for each person using the same phone.)
    3. This is the tricky one. I found only one way to configure my email in that way but it has the most detailed settings for your account and it connects to the server directly. Bad news is, you can set only one mailbox up with that method. Go to menu, messaging, options, settings, email, options, new mailbox, start, enter your address and password, choose imap/pop, enter server settings, save. You'll see the default mailbox box will change. (But you won't see the mailbox in the messaging application [the app we've started by selecting menu then messaging]. I don't know if this is a bug or a feature.) Suddenly, the Email 2.1.0 application will start and it will try to take the control of your mailbox. Don't let. Selecting options, exit close that application. You'll be in the messaging application's menu again. Another options, exit closes this application too, and will take you to the main screen. Now, the tricky part. If you go and check Email 2.1.0 application, you'll see your mailbox is there. If you go to the messaging application, it won't show you your mailbox. Still, if you go options, settings, email, you'll see your mailbox as the default. Ok, who cares. Now, the settings. If you shortly press the email one touch key, you'll see your mailbox in the messaging application. If you select options then Email settings you'll get hell a lot of settings to set your mailbox. This is the only way I know to see the "Email settings" menu item and set the mailbox in detail. Remember that, there are projections of these settings on the Email 2.1.0 application's menu with less options.
There may be other setups for exchange and so on but I didn't check that options. These were already enough for my brain to explode.

    Continues...
The third solution is the native solution, I think (as it doesn't support html messages and Nokia Email 2.1.0 and Nokia messaging service are marketed to be able to read HTML messages).
Another issue of the third solution is that the settings in the native messaging application and the settings in the Email 2.1.0 are sometimes conflicting. So you need to crosscheck them after you set up.
Nokia hardly have IMAP-idle support. So, don't trust on it. The very basic example of such is, you seem to be connected with the fancy green circle at the top right but when you try to read any email, you'll be asked to connect to internet continuously and you won't be able to fetch or read the message.
I checked many IMAP server logs to realize this issue. The problem is, as Nokia doesn't keep the credentials and disconnect from the server way too early, server generally interprets it as "remote party disconnected". And if you ask to fetch something again the second time, it creates an SSL 41 error (certificate not found) and closes the connection.
(Yes, I got SSL installed in my mail server. I think nearly everybody has it in these days.)
Another thing is about the "Nokia messaging service" It has hardly any customer support and it goes offline from time to time. Sometimes, you cannot reach the server even from your PC or if you can reach, you cannot configure anything.
For example, it is possible that it creates an account for you that you aren't aware of. The account creation is automated and the username/password pair is set as the first email address you've logged in with your phone. Sometimes people are unaware of this and when they change their passwords on their accounts, their email suddenly gets disconnected. Also, sometimes they cannot remember their old passwords or their old mailboxes not in use anymore.
Second, it maps many personal data altogether, which is against privacy. I realized this issue by practice. Here is my story:
I got an mail account, say [email protected] and I created a nokia messaging service account with this email. This is normally a "trial period" subscription of which the username/password pair is identical to my mail account. Namely, [email protected] and some password. I also added my second email account, [email protected] to my nokia messaging account. During account creation, the site asked me about my phone number.
Then, I bought E55 which has lifetime nokia messaging service subscription. I switched on my brand new E55 and try to configure my email. By chance, I started with [email protected]. So, Nokia created an [email protected] nokia messaging account for me. (I realized that account creation afterwards and it was a phone-lifetime subscription.) Then, I added my second email [email protected] on my phone.
What the duck, everything was scrambled. After I realize the double Nokia messaging accounts issue, I decided to delete the old one, which was a trial. At the end, I actually got a lifetime. So I logged in to the service and cancelled my first account. What do you expect? Nokia messaging service deleted both of my accounts and all email messages from both of my phones. I was lucky that I backed them up recently. I can't imagine to lose all my business mail because of the poor and ill policies of Nokia. Moreover, now, I can't get another phone-lifetime subscription to the service in the first week of my phone. Very nice...
Still, I got the third issue. I mentioned that I was checking my servers' logs to understand what's going on. After I tried to delete one (but practically deleted both) of my nokia messaging accounts, there shouoldn't be any references to my servers. Do you think so?
These are some of the IP's trying to connect to my mail server even after the messaging accounts are deleted:
    131.228.18.22
    131.228.18.67
    131.228.18.30
    131.228.18.40
When you check them at geo locator, they're all in Finland... Very nice... The only way I found was changing all my accounts passwords to get rid of the great and fancy Nokia eavesdropping service. After that, these IP's started to try the same password to log in. Currently, Nokia is trying to log in 6 times every 15 minutes to my mail accounts. I don't know when they'll stop trying. They're like terminators, they never give up.
Advice: IF YOU EVER SUBSCRIBED TO NOKIA MESSAGING SERVICE, JUST CHANGE ALL YOUR EMAIL PASSWORDS ASAP.
The fourth issue is about the setup process again. If you connect to the internet during setting up the email (Second option above), wizard runs so slowly, because it is trying to connect to the Nokia server (to send your username and password to Nokia databases).
This is probably one of the reasons why people end up waiting for minutes and cannot get a mailbox at the end.

  • MOVED: 880GMA-E45 Fx-6300 CPU support?

This topic has been moved to MSI AMD boards.

I've come across to a site that is some sort of official announcement from MSi regarding the upgrade of 'old' motherboards to the AM3+ standards. Since I cannot post external links, I'll just post what it says:
    Supported Mainboards
    AM3+ Compatible Mainboard
    890FXA-GD70   880GMS-E35
    890FXA-GD65   870A-G54
    890GXM-G65   870A-G54H
    880GMA-E55   870A-G46
    880GMA-E35   760GM-P33
I have a 880GMA-E45 and according to these news, I'm able to download a BIOS update and make it compatible with AM3+ CPUs.
According to the old announcement you found your board were already not mentioned. As the cpu support chart leads to the same conclusion AM3+ cpus are not supported. Besides these boards would anyway just support old Bulldozer FX cpus not the newer Vishera cpus (like FX6300).

  • E55 - improve sound on mp3 playback?

mp3 playback on my E55 is dissappointing; you need to add Bass enhancement just to get a flat frequency response and the music lacks detail even on simplet tracks.
I know it's not a dedicated mp3 player/'comes with music'/Walkman phone but how can I improve music playback?
    - Is eACC format easier on the processor?
    - Is there a 3rd party mp3/ACC player for E55 that sounds better?

    I should have explained;
    - Yes, I'm using same pair of headphones to compare same tracks played back on E55 and laptop. Laptop is satisfactory and I'm used to what it 'sounds' like, E55 mp3 player is poor.
    - Source is mp3 so ACC/eACC would require an additional conversion (rather than ripping CDs to ACC in the first place).
Seperate headphone amp is nice idea, but my sound quality expectations aren't quite that high for a phone. Would only bother with headphone amp for CD line output or similar cheers.
    Further testing;
    - Internet Radio on E55 is quite acceptable and dosn't need any bass re-infocement. I conclude the problem is with the mp3 playing software on E55 or the source mp3 - not the S60 OS or E55 hardware.
    - Playing further albums on proved that BOTH the laptop and E55 did justice other mp3 and WMAs including Opera, Rock and Dance.
Conclusion: "The Haçienda - Acid House Classics" mp3 album is a bit quite and not a great source. But the E55 still needs bass turned on for the music player (but not Internet Radio!) so could be solved with a software update.
Other sources sound as good as you could expect on the E55: rubbish in ribbish out.
Now to see if converting from mp3/WMA to ACC/eACC can actually improve the sound. I used to think it impossible to improve a signal with additional processing, but my Sony Hard Disk TV Recorder actually plays back better than the original(!) so maybe converting to ACC will to.

  • E55 - Well, where is IT?!!!

E55 and E75 announced on the same day in mid-Feb at MWC. 2-months later E75 available, 6-months later E55.....???? My two main suppliers can only hazard guestimates, currently running (maybe!) at the end of the month. Even Apple were not THIS bad with their i-poo phone. You might have had to wait from announcement to actual launch but at least it arrived on time! Think about it Nokia *GRRR*

  • MSI 880GMA-E45 RAID Option for Recovery/Import?

    Hi All,
Does anyone know if the above motherboard - in its RAID 5 settings, does it have a "recover" or "import" settings option?
My current 880GMA is Toasted, fired  -dead. But my disks are fine. So I want to buy another 880GMA board and us it. However I need to know if its possible to continue with my existing RAID disks in the new system?
I cant create a new RAID array, because of that process initializes the disks, which will erase the data. I need to urgently know if the 880GMA has an option to scan an existing disk set for a RAID and use it - OR if you can create a RAID 5 array BUT NOT INITIALIZE IT. So It will just use it as is?
    Thanks,
    Rurapente.

That should be no problem. Hook up the drives to the same ports as before and set the SATA Controller to RAID-Mode right after system start-up.  The RAID-BIOS should then kick in and simply recognize & use your drives in the same way they were originally configured on the other mainboard.  As long as board/chipset/SATA controller are the same and as long as each drive is hooked up to the same port, there should not be any problem.

  • Some help please navigating these forums and a little discussion as well?

There are a few questions I’d like to post, but first I need to determine how to use this newer style of user-to-user forum. Yeah, it’s been around a few years or so, but I’ve seen it take over the more traditional message board systems like v-bulletin and phpBB. Those boards were easy to navigate, as the forums, categories and topics were presented in a typical directory tree structure (even though the built-in search functions leaved a lot to be desired).
Now the trend has shifted to formats such as this. While some retain some semblance of categories and topics (discussions), others seem to abandon this altogether in favor posts or discussions being related via tags or keywords. Google is the worst offender – forcing the user to select up to 4 pre-defined descriptors when creating a new post.
Also confusing is how the terminology has changed. The forums are now calling topics, discussions. But they end up containing even less actual discussion on the topic and have de-volved into simple questions and answered. This is reinforced by the use of buttons to compel the original poster to designate responses as helpful or correct answers. This I would guess is in response to the myriad of answer seekers posting questions, receiving several helpful replies and never going back to say thanks, thus, the threads become all but useless for others who experience and seek out solutions to similar issues.
The new format also usually starts out with “ask your question here” which is just another way to say, “hey, how about at least giving the search a try before asking a question that’s been covered before”.  Because many self-contained search features just don’t work, I can see why users just skip over it. But, what they may not know is that you can use Google to search a specific site. Forum, or blog which usually works pretty well. I’ve done this on a number of occasions, only to find the response as “this question has been answered here a hundred times – try searching”. If the responder is feeling generous that day, he or she may also present a link – a google search link that includes keywords.
So, here I do see the initial ask your question box, then underneath that, a bunch of icons that represent particular products/topics. I start searches using more keywords, the reduce them If there are too many results. This gradual decline works well for Google, but here at Apple Support, I went from over 700 results to just two by eliminating all but the two mandatory keywords. I will do some more searches and post in the appropriate section, but my gut reaction is that it would be hard to believe that I’m the only person who has ever had this question.
So, then – what’s the best and right way to use this new forum?

A BRIEF HISTORY OF ONLINE MESSAGE BOARDS
I’m turning the double-nickel this year, so I’ve earned the right to gripe a bit. I don’t know everything, but for those of you youngsters, do yourself a favor a read up. If you truly are a techno-phile, you’ll find it at least somewhat interesting, at least enough to do a little research. Plus, this information isn’t all that old.
The first online community I was exposed to was the BBS – Bulletin Board System. I had just bought my first PC, a Tandy, and the sales guy sold me a modem and gave me a number to call to connect to his BBS. I installed the modem, dialed the number and for the first time heard the annoyingly beautiful sounds of modems connecting. The, almost like “Do you want to play a game?”, text appeared on my monitor and I was hooked. The BBSes were local – to avoid long distance calls – and operated by those who could afford a second, dedicated computer and phone line. Usually, only one person could connect at a time – browse the discussion topics, leave a post to add to the discussion, check private messages (email) then log off.
News Groups were the next form on online interaction I was introduced to. These required a special server running a dedicated protocol and a new reader, usually integrated in with an email client like Outlook Express. Each group was a specific topic – for example, Microsoft groups may have had a couple dozen or so groups covering topics like Windows 95 or networking, other commercially sponsored groups, or self-created groups. Like a BBS, you would log on, catch up on unread messages, respond to some and move on. It was in the News Groups where I learned how to program web pages to connect to a hosted database and many other things, thanks to the expertise and kindness of strangers. These groups soon became the territory of spammers, not to mention the real ugly recesses of the internet – international folks sharing “content” that the work obscene can’t even begin to describe. ISP’s soon dropped news groups from their services and they went away.
By this time however, the world-wide-web was now in full swing. We no longer needed AOL or Prodigy to get on the Net, just an ISP and browser. Broadband was becoming available in select markets. Web-based bulletin boards sprang up all over, filling the void that the news groups left behind. They evolved, but kept to the simple structure and format for a good long while. As the cost of web hosting came down, and the availability of online databases went up, and open source application became better and more robust, anyone could incorporate a forum into their site with little time or expense.
Social Media was on the rise. Sites came and went. From Friendster, to Myspace, then finally facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. The net also settled in to a short list of other content sharing sites – YouTube, Flickr, Instagram. These took over the social discussion aspects of the online forum sites. That left the forums to take the only remaining role of software and product support – both as an extension of a company’s support solution or user-to-user help and support.
On more than one occasion, I’ve tried to engage other users in topical and conceptual discussion in these groups, but it seems that they’ve already used their energy for that keeping up with their social media obligations. Facebook groups get lost in the multitude of pages. So end user support groups have settled into Q & A, mark the answer as correct them move on. Then another person comes along with the same question, enters it into the box, sees the first ten “pertinent” results that don’t answer the question, posts the question, and the cycle continues.
If anyone has read this far, I commend you! Reading is fast becoming a lost art. I know it’s hard to read off a computer screen, easier on a tablet. And while I live my gizmos and gadgets, I have to still at least once in a while pick up a real book. I’m perfectly satisfied with my iTunes system with the only issue being the quality of any downloaded music. It’s better than it used to be, but CD’s have superior sound. Blu-ray Disc has superior sound and picture.
I did purchase several books from the iTunes Book Store. But why? I could have bought them anywhere and read them in iBooks, but not the other way around. I had to sell my iOS devices. And now I can’t read my books. But that’s another story, for another day.

As an overall reaction to your treatise, I agree. I also judge that you - like me - may have some experience and skill at UX design (User eXperience - usability design, for the unwashed masses).
First, let me commend your use of the WHITE SPACE that Apple graphic designers have so kindly provided. Looks very much like a paper page full of easy-to-read-SERIF-FONT text - it is clear you have experience with design concepts.
As a tribute, I will post in your style - although our compose pane here is not quite WYSIWYG, I am hoping that line spacing will sort itself out, if not I will remove my attempt at bucking the system - but it may time for you to get some new optics
    you said:
" ... v-bulletin and phpBB. Those boards were easy to navigate, as the forums, categories and topics were presented in a typical directory tree structure... "
Agree that vBulletin, etc. WERE easy and familiar - but what is this structure but lipstick on that pig - see SITEMAP | ASC  (tt2's excellent UserTip). The digital directory tree is merely an adaption of the familiar Fileroom of old... a room for files(computer), file cabinets w/ file 'folders'(folders) and files(files). Apple in the form of Jobs/Wozniak (actually Xerox, but I won't quibble) was groundbreaking in the introduction of the GUI to the masses. [see your comment on being forced to learn a new way of working... has always been thus]
Let me add that the lack of Apple's implementation of the stock features of "Sticky" threads - Announcements, Hot Topics, etc., is a miscalculation. The CATEGORIES above the Using ASC list of threads - "Announcements" and "Community Events" - baffle me as to their usefulness as I can see neither when I click 'em, only some "filtering" of what is in the "Feedback about Discussions" (?Feedback ?about? Disscussions?) Category.
    you further said:
"... the trend has shifted to formats such as this. While some retain some semblance of categories and topics (discussions), others seem to abandon this altogether in favor posts or discussions being related via tags or keywords... "
Kids these days... => iDevices (generic for handheld smarty-devices of any stripe) are responsible for the VISUAL graphic design conventions... no more teensy-weensy cursor - but BIG FAT FINGERS.
A good suggestion to submit at Support_Feedback  might be to improve the 'Smartness' of the search capabilities by REQUIRING tags to be attached by the OP (offer suggestions if they wish) AND FURTHER, allowing other users of status to ADD tags (see your ¶ #2) - my estimation of the ACTIVE SEARCH is that it is looking for matching terms in the title of a thread, but I have no proof - anecdotal or by documentation at JiveSoftware.
    additionally you said:
"... the use of buttons to compel the original poster to designate responses as helpful or correct answers. This I would guess is in response to the myriad of answer seekers posting questions, receiving several helpful replies and never going back to say thanks, thus, the threads become all but useless for others who experience and seek out solutions to similar issues. "
I have no experience with other enterprise solutions, but the scuttlebutt on Jive is that it is the best in the business at Community Collaborative WorkFlow Software for Big Enterprise. We here unfortunately have been given use of a mere pittance of Jive's features. Apparently the MARKUP buttons have a really valuable purpose in the complete package of Jive workflow management. Here, merely a system for rewarding helpers. The green icon goes un-noticed by most and the OPost is likely irrelevant to most individual's issue. Regarding the latter portion, you can't change human nature. Some folks just aren't team players.
    you continued:
"... The new format also usually starts out with “ask your question here” which is just another way to say, “hey, how about at least giving the search a try before asking a question that’s been covered before”. Because many self-contained search features just don’t work, I can see why users just skip over it. But, what they may not know is that you can use Google to search a specific site. ... "
This particular issue of "Why do folks not go to the dadgum forum related to their device/software?" has plagued me since actively taking part here. My maladies prompted ME to go directly to the forum/sub-forum where they belonged. Clearly "My iPhone is a BRICK - how do I UN-BRICK IT?" does not belong in this forum - Using ASC - but thousands of similar questions land here - it MAY be because the DEFAULT forum for un-PRE-visited forum at SUBMIT.

Something akin to "Pick the Device or Software in which you are interested below" might at least get the visitor to the right place to BROWSE their issue. Many folks are unable to craft a TITLE to their question that even resembles their problem, much less explain it in the bodytext.
This is explained  in the javascript:; link "How to write a good question"  - e content of which I leave open AND hi-lited in a text file ready to copy/paste, for example:

Describe the problem, and include any details about what seems to cause it.
List any troubleshooting steps you've already tried, or temporary fixes you've discovered.
Here is how obscure that information is

HOORAY! - another fan of the Google workaround. I get pooh-poohed by some for even suggesting going off the reservation, but it works WONDERFULLY and is FAST AS LIGHTNING with even more useful post-result filtering.
    you concluded your evaluation with:
" So, then – what’s the best and right way to use this new forum? "
Learn the system just like you did when you first started using a computer instead of paper. It is what it is. I have a comfortable WorkFlow established using browser bookmarks and Add-ons + Google for all searches + email notifications to sort the wheat from the chaff. Not adopted of my choosing... but at least it's MINE!! Be advised that the SiteWare employs some "we will save you from yourself, helmet-law-like features" that may frustrate you from time to time - until you discover (or are told) how to circumvent them.

  • Bank statement Nr in journal entry and Payments

In Notenumber 1374872 (SP 01/PL7) a change has been implemented that the number of the payment run is copied to the remarks of the payment and the journal entry. I think it will be good idea to do the same for the number of the bankstatement in bank stament processing. Hereby the text for the note 1374872. The reason why and the solution are the same.
    Regards,
    ProSigma BV
    Cees Hameete
    Symptom
To find the number of the payment wizard run in payments and journal entries, bookkeepers currently have to open the journal entry, navigate to the payment document, and then search manually in the executed payment wizard runs to find the correct number.
    Other terms
Incoming payment; outgoing payment; payment wizard; journal entry
    Reason and Prerequisites
    Functionality description
    Solution
To improve usability and provide integrated journal remarks information, SAP Business One was changed as follows:
When an incoming or outgoing payment is generated using the payment wizard, the application adds the payment wizard run number to the "Journal Remarks" field of the payment document and to the "Remarks" field in the journal entry on both header and row level.
The values in the "Journal Remarks" and "Remarks" field have the following structure:
Incoming Payments - [Customer Code] - [Payment Wizard Run Number]
Outgoing Payments - [Vendor Code] - [Payment Wizard Run Number]
SAP intends to provide a patch or patches in order to solve the problem described.
The section Reference to Related Notes below will list the specific patches once they become available.
The corresponding Info file of the patches in SAP Service Marketplace will also show the SAP Note number.
Be aware that these references can only be set at patch release date.
SAP will deliver patches only for selected releases at its own discretion, based on the business impact and the complexity of the implementation.

I completely agree with your proposal.  We have the same problem at the moment.  I hope SAP will implement a solution for this.

  • I'm new and I think I like it.

This is an unproductive fanboy-message (=spam), but I thought I could post it anyways
I didn't post this to "Arch is best" since I wouldn't say that Arch is the best. I just like it a lot, and wanted to share that
The point is: I like Arch.
My real Linux age started about 4 years ago with Gentoo. I used Mandrake and SuSE before Gentoo, but I don't count  that. With Gentoo, I started to understand operating systems in general, and it was the first time I ever had fun setting up and using an OS. I learned a bunch of things from that, Gentoo has real superb documentation after all. Back then, we guys doing stage 1 installs from a text-only live cd were considered "cool", today the Gentoo community considers us "ricers" or something.
I didn't do that for any speed benefit. I never felt any recognisable hyper speed with Gentoo in any way - I just liked the way you install it. Starting with the very base and then get everything you need.
Stage 1 in Gentoo meant that you even built the base system and the build tools yourself - this isn't supported anymore today. It didn't make much sense back then, but I found it totally cool to have my computer working on something real big while I'm at school.
Well, Gentoo had and has many benefits, but after 4 years, it lost it's "charm" for me. You have a LiveCD GUI installer, the packages aren't as up to date as they used to and I'm sort of sick of compiling something like KDE, which just takes too much time.
I'm not a student anymore, I am a programmer since two years and I need systems that does a job fast and reliable, since I have like a 12 hour day and there is certainly something better to do at home than to stare at compiler output.
One week ago, an old friend told me about Arch and I thought that I could give it a try. I'm just stunned. It brings back the Gentoo feeling of the old days and I feel like 17 again
The installation rocks - the guide is good and the whole process is very easy. The best thing is package configuration. Base only contains few and one can really pick only what he needs. The first thing I dropped was lilo along with wireless and pcmcia tools. I don't know how many of you guys have ever installed a debian and did the manual package selection. Remember dselect? After going through that, even a programmer would consider buying a mac. Archs ncurses selection is just good.
Okay, 20 minutes have passed and the system is installed. I booted.
Was a good feeling. A nice marked up sysvinit greeted me that bootet incredibly fast (like 10 seconds) and I had my login prompt. Now I was stuck - there was no greeting message pointing out some further documentation, and I didn't install links so I couldn't look up how to use pacman.
I have very bad experiences with man pages other than those of category 3 - totally bloated with useless GNU --something-nobody-will-ever-need-number-three options and impossible to extract information from when not unemployed. Info pages are even worse. I love Arch for not providing them. This is the worst idea GNU people have ever had.
But I had no choice other than rebooting Gentoo, and I dislike giving up. So I read the pacman manpage (the old friend told me it's name - otherwise I would have been stuck) - and I was surprised. It was really understandeable. So I fired it up, so see that the program even explains itself in a wonderful way.
So it was no problem to install links. I went to the wiki and followed the X11 howto.
Long speech short sense - I had X, windowmaker and firefox all in some minutes ready to go.
So I started reading the wiki with firefox in X. The next adventure would be to install KDE.
I've been using fvmw2 and fluxbox for the last three years, then went to gnome and began to hate it. Though KDE looks like kindergarten, I gave it another try and after some hours of kde-look.org browsing, I had it actually good looking. I love the playful cleverness you see everywhere. You can directly use kde-look.org as wallpapers from within the wallpaper selection dialog. KDE just has everything I need (and way more, but that can happily be deactivated ).
Okay, now I was frightened. Since KDE has so many components, I had a quick look for meta packages to make everything easier. I noticed that there are only the usual bundle packages, but no split ones. I was very happy when Gentoo introduced the KDE split ebuilds, but I don't care for arch not having them. Arch has no useflags, so I didn't care. I also don't care about 10 MB of disk "wasteage" with programs I will probably not use.
So I just got myself kdebase and startx'd it.
First thing to notice: Wow, this looks clean.
Second thing to notice: This sucks.
There were absolutely no programs in the K menu and clicking the home icon asked what application to start it with.
After a short board search, I found someone who had this problem some time ago.
He reinstalled kdebase - so did it.
    Relogin - everything works.
And THIS was clean. I just love the default K menu. I love the branding. I love everything about this. Have been using Kubuntu at work, but it just sucked. The Arch KDE is the most wonderful default KDE I've ever seen, so I didn't bother theming it for the first three days.
Beeing busy with desktop environments, I installed the newest nvidia driver and beryl. After deactivating some KDE effects, beryl works like a charm. NEVER did together with KDE with (K)Ubuntu or Gentoo on that box. Stunned. Happy. Okay, one bad thing: I don't see the logout screen - but since I use startx, there's only one option anyways.
Now it was time for the usual 64-bit multimedia trouble.
After adding the community repository, I looked up how to do it. My first mission was to view my favorite trailer (QuickTime mov). On the board, I saw that people use to install "codecs" for that, but I'm 64 bit, so I was unsure if it would work. Just installed kmplayer and codecs. It works. Wonderful. After that, I had to view youtube movies - another quest.
So it was time to finally use makepkg. I heard of it, I heard it was like Ports and I LOVE Ports. It really is like Ports. It is in a wonderful clever way very understandeable. Not comparable to the complicated ebuilds installing 20 patches at a time. I found the AUR page and all the two packages I needed for my flash nsplugin. Was easy to do. Works.
Now it was time to do the most distusting thing: view my favorite rmvb movies. rmvb sucks, I wasn't able to view it with something other than helix realplayer, and I never liked that software for not beeing able to use alsa. But I had to. It was relatively easy to locate realplayer for 64 bit in AUR. But there were dependencies having dependencies all only available via makepgk. So I had to download like 8 packages and figure out in what order to build and install them.
The last package - realplayer itself - had a problem. Helix changed their link. I manually downloaded realplayer and slightely changed the src= association in the PKGBUILD.
After that, I was able to compile and install it.
Starting it was a sad experienced - all the fonts where missing. Luckily, I knew how to control it blind. So disabling arts along with everything else that does sound made my new baked realplayer worked.
Okay, now I had everything I need and wanted to test the system for usability.
Setting up my design, manually branding my favorite icon theme for Arch. Setting everything up. I used konqueror to browse for my files and despite all my other kde experiences, the file associations are just what I expect. kmplayer opens all types of videos. During clicking all of my different video types, I accidentaly clicked one rmvb and kmplayer opened up.
What can I say - it WORKS! I don't know whether this is because mplayer can use original realplayers codec or because the codecs package has rmvb support, but I love it. Now I can view them with a good player.
You are doing a great job out there. Arch is what it should be: Light and clever wherever you look.
It was a very good idea to create pacman instead of using dpkg or rpm with all it's medievality.
You don't need a GUI installer, Arch is after all supposed for people who know a little UNIX.
You don't need to gain popularity - your community is great, the system is great.
In general, I feel like using a binary lfs here. This is a great feeling, it's the first time in a while that Linux meant fun to me.
Please do me one favor and stay how you are
This was probably the longest post in my live. I don't say Arch is best. There are some things I dislike. Some things I like more about other distros. Nothing is perfect - Arch is very close to that though. I just felt the need to thank you for that.

Mikko777 wrote:So what is the best?
I wouldn't judge. I've been to Arch for a week, you know? But as said, it's VERY close to it.
What I dislike after a week is makepkg not handling dependencies automatically (which would be overhead, so probably not appropriate).
Mikko777 wrote:Also theres KDEmod for modular kde, dunno if its for 64 bits tho.
Don't actually need that as said ... I see no real benefit of having that other than not beeing a KDE user or having Gentoos useflags.

  • Yoga 13 Bluetooth (and Wi-Fi) serious issues

Yoga 13 Bad Wi-Fi and Bluetooth – almost giving up (and giving back)
I have purchased the Yoga 13 a week ago, and everything was fine. EXCEPT, I experienced problems to connect to the public Wi-Fi. I get  5 seconds of Wi-Fi connected, and then 5 seconds of "limited connection", and again "connected" for 5 sec., "limited" for 5 sec., and so on. I convinced myself it was because of the large number of people connected at the place I have been at. But now I am sitting here, with just a few people, and it seems they are all connected well, and only I get the 5 seconds cycle.
But it wasn't for this issue that I started to feel frustrated with my 1 week old Lenovo Yoga. It's the Bluetooth issue that really bothers me. I am trying to use Microsoft Notebook Bluetooth 5000 mouse. I have to use it, since I have to use both USBs for other devices. At first it worked fine. Just the random disconnections everyone on the net are talking about. I tried everything: I set the power management of the realtek  rtl8723A chip so it won't be able to turn off the BT. I also set the BT to automatically search for devices under services.msc management, which supposed to help reconnection after sleep. Each time it seemed like the problem was solved, until the next time it randomly disconnected.
So I have updated my machine. First, I've updated the BIOS from CN52 to CN55. I don't know if it's relevant, but I mention it anyway. Them I've updated the realtek drivers, according to the recommendations I found in Lenovo support forums. Things only got worse.
Now the PC either (1) can't recognize the mouse at all, although it recognizes my cell phone, and my cell phone recognizes the mouse; (2) or it recognizes the mouse, and then asks me to pair with the mouse using a code (!!) as if the mouse is some kind of a laptop. Even then, if I press Next (using 0000 or 1234 as a code results with nothing), the PC starts some driver installation, calling the mouse HID compliant, and usually the process terminates itself before it finished. Only once for a dozens of attempts, does the PC recognize the mouse properly, installs it and the mouse works – only it became incredibly laggy, barely usable. It is hard to believe it worked fine from the beginning, and any update just made it less usable.
Now, trying to downgrade the Realtek driver results with the same problems. I tried various versions of this driver – no success. I also made a system restore once, to get back to the point before updates, but the same result: no mouse recognition / all sorts of problems I mentioned above.
I am frustrated. I bought this computer for an urgent work, and already spent 5 or 6 hours just to make it work, and still no success. I am just a moment from giving up. Any ideas?
    [*pardon my English]

I forgot to mention I used a fresh pair of batteries for the mouse (rules out simple solutions).

  • A TreeMap and ArrayList question

I am considering using a TreeMap structure with a String as my key and an ArrayList<Record> as my value. After doing some searching and not quite finding the assurance I desired, I am looking for anyone's guidance on my approach. Allow me to briefly explain my situation.
I am writing a program which reads a entry log and breaks the information into a more usable form (in particular, separated by each individual). I do not know before hand the names of the people I may encounter in the log, nor how many occurances of their name I may find. Also, it is safe to assume that no one person's name is the same for two different people. I wish to be able to call up a person's name and view all records associated with them. I felt the use of a TreeMap would be best in the event that I wish to list out a report with all individuals found, and such a listing would already be in alphabetical order.
In summation, is my approach of making a TreeMap<String, ArrayList<Record>> an acceptable practice?
    Thank you for your time.

If there's the slightest chance that Ron Manager will come along on Monday and say "Good job! Now, can we look up records by date?" or something, consider an embedded DB."Embedded DB" is something different than "in-memory DB" though. An embedded DB is persistent while a in-memory one is not. If you use an embedded DB, you need to synchronize it after restart with your other data sources, and it will use disk space as well. There are use case for embedded DBs and others for in-memory DBs. Hard to say which is the case here, without knowing more. The OP "isn't allowed" to use a database, which almost certainly means he's not allowed to install any more software on the system, eg, MySQL. So an in-process database is the way to go. Whether it's persistent or not is irrelevant. "Embedded" and "in-memory" are not opposites. By "embedded" we really mean in-process. Do you know of any databases which can run in-process but not in-memory? How about in-memory but not in-process? In reality, we're talking about the same products, configured slightly differently.
