8900 White Screen of Death Solution

This worked in *MY* case.
Random white screen lockup that would only be solved by putting the phone on a charger. OS reinstall didn't work, removing new apps didn't work. Completely wiping the phone and doing a clean install didn't work.
I replaced the battery with a new one.
That was 3 days ago. My phone hasn't crashed since. For the last two days, I've been pushing the phone hard with data and voice calls...and no issues. I've also noticed that the new battery doesn't deplete nearly as quickly as the old one. I'm guessing the 'charger solution' should have been a clue. This seems to have fixed my problem, just hope it helps someone else.

If I had known it were as simple as replacing the battery, I probably wouldn't be under a contract today with an Android phone.  I really loved that 8900.
And the BB is designed to be reset with the battery pull.,

  • Traditional Solution To "White Screen of Death" Not Working

My 2G 32GB iPod Touch was working fine, and an hour later, I got the "white screen of death." I tried the hard reboot, holding down the home/sleep button for 10 seconds. After that failed, I tried 15, 20, 25, etc. I tried upgrading to 4.0.2. Nothing. Restoring to factory settings. Nothing. Restoring factory settings AGAIN. Still just a white screen.
A couple days later, I was seeing if it was just a screen error. Turns out, whenever I slide where the slider would have been on the screen, it made the unlock sound. When I had unlocked it, I poked around until I got into something with a keyboard, and all of the letters had the "click" sound whenever they were touched.
My opinion is that the problem is a loose wire that connects to the LCD screen, just randomly getting unloose. However, I want a second opinion, and a potential solution.
AND DO NOT TELL ME TO HOLD DOWN THE HOME AND SLEEP BUTTON FOR 10 SECONDS. IT DOES NOT WORK FOR THIS CASE. LET ME REPEAT. THAT SOLUTION. WILL NEVER WORK. FOR THIS SITUATION.

Yeah. I've done that about a thousand times. Perhaps you didn't read what I wrote in all caps. Or perhaps you misread the title.

Imagine that what's happening in this video is on an iPod, and isn't an app. And there's no display of time or WiFi signal.

  • White Screen of Death Questions [PLEASE HELP!]

If someone actually cares about my issue, they will read all of the following. Let's see how many of you are out here and how many just want to answer simple short questions for reputation.
Okay, so I've ran into my first ever iPod Touch issue. I've never owned an iPhone, but I have had an iPod in the past and know a bit about them. I'm going to be 100% honest and I need a serious answer because I'm upset and angry. If anyone can be bothered to read the following, THANK YOU. If anyone could help me out in any way by giving me suggestions/tips and/or a solution, THANK YOU. But anything that can help is appreciated.
I had my board shorts on when this ocurred. I went to the toilet, doing my own business. I had my iPod Touch in my bank pocket which went to about half way down my thigh. The iPod Touch at the time was facing away from my thigh. Pulling down my pants, the iPod Touch hit the tiled floor. It hardly even hit the floor, all I heard was a little click and I realised it was my iPod. It was flat at the time, I picked it up and pressed the Home button immediately to ensure it was okay. It sort of lit up like a white background, but had a very low opacity. Since it was flat, I assumed it was normal.
Putting my iPod on charge right after my toilet break, I waited and waited for it to charge quickly enough for me to see the screen as I was a little worried not having seen that faded screen before. When the Apple logo was to appear, it gave me a lit up white screen. I was so confused as there were no marks AT ALL on my screen or any other part of the iPod.
NOTE: My iPod is still under warranty.
Did my research and came to the conclusion that it was the infamous 'White Screen of Death'. Where do I go from here? I have no clue!
I have important information such as a To Do list and my Contacts within the iPod. I NEED to retrieve this information. Is there any way I can do this?
I can still use the iPod, as if the screen were showing. Sounds are working, but there is just a blank, lit up white screen. Sometimes when I hold the Home button, On/Off button & the Volume Up buttoon all at the same time for ~10-20 seconds, the Apple logo comes up as if the screen was all fixed. 5 Seconds later, it goes all funny as if there were faded white lines and a faded white background but still being able to see the logo/screen. When the iPod loads, it just goes back to the lit up white screen.
Here's another odd thing to this, when I leave my iPod Touch sitting in a spot remotely, without touching it for a few hours, when I come back to it and hit the Home button, the iPod will begin to work fine as if nothing ever happened. No white screen, no nothing, just simply use it as I wish. I can even sometimes lock it, and then unclock it again with it still showing perfectly. However, when I tend to click the On/Off button after this happens, or if I just continue to use it for ~1 minute, it will eventually do the same as the above paragraph in second last sentence.
    This may be important:
    The iPod charges fine.
The iPod can be used with my computer and iTunes fine.
To sum it all up, everything can be done, including using the iPod, but with a lit up white screen.
Here are some questions I have for you guys:
Will Apple cover this in my warranty?
If they won't, what should I do?
How much would a replacement screen cost?
Should I attempty to open my iPod if they do not cover it by warranty? (I have not attempted as I don't want to void anything).
What could be the cause and why?
How can I retrieve that important information? (Contacts & To Do List)
Have you got any suggestions/tips for me?
I need this resolved guys. I'm very upset and angry over the whole situation. If a little thump on the tiles like that (it's not like I dropped it or anything) can damage the screen that much, then this devices from Apple can't be very reliable. All I'm asking for is some genuine service/help to resolve my issue. If this can be done, I will be one VERY happy person.
    Daniel

Will Apple cover this in my warranty?
As stated above it is not covered by the warranty as it will be deemed accidental damage.  You can try explaining what happened to somebody at the Genius Bar and they may cut you some slack and replace it at no cost.  They might not though as Apple has started to really come down hard on eliminating replacing accidentally damaged iPods at no cost.
If they won't, what should I do?
Again, bring it into them anyways and explain what happened.  You have nothing to lose either way.  Otherwise, you really only have 2 other options.  Send it to a third party service center to have them take a look at it and possibly repair the iPod, or do some studying online and learn how to open up the device yourself and take a look.  There are some excellent step-by-step repair guides at http://www.ifixit.com/.
How much would a replacement screen cost?
This depends on where or how you have it repaired.  Here is Apple's repair pricing guide.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/
Third party repair centers will cost less and they'll actually swap out the bad part rather than just replace the entire iPod as Apple does.
Should I attempty to open my iPod if they do not cover it by warranty? (I have not attempted as I don't want to void anything).
If you have a warranty on it still, I wouldn't quite yet.  Take it to your local Apple store as explained above.  Otherwise, I would only if you feel comfortable working with small electronics and consider yourself handy with them.
What could be the cause and why?
As stated already, it could be a damaged or loose LCD ribbon cable or the LCD screen itself is damaged.  As to what exact component, there is no way to tell.
How can I retrieve that important information? (Contacts & To Do List)
Make a backup of the device in iTunes before taking or sending it in for service or before you decide to open it up (if you do happen to go that route).  See here what is included in the backup of the device.
    iTunes: About iOS backups
If you get a new or replacement device you can restore it from that backup.
Have you got any suggestions/tips for me?
As I have already stated numerous times, try taking it into your local Apple Store and see if there is anything can do for you such as swap it out.  Remember that they are not obligated to do so since the damage is technically accidental.  Be kind and polite when explaning what happened. You never know what could happen!

  • Since updating the software on my iPhone 3gs it has developed the so called "white screen of death". The phone has not been dropped or damaged in anyway, the problem only developed after software upgrade. Rung apple and they were less than helpful

since updating my iphone 3gs software it has developed the so called "white screen of death" this happened immediately after software install. It has never been dropped or damaged. I have tried the solution which seems to pop up most of holding down the power button and the home button for 10 seconds but this hasnt helped at all. Tried ringing apple, who were less than helpful and disinterested as the phone is out of warranty. I am hoping there is a solution which doesnt mean shelling out for a new phone! any ideas?

Basics from the manual are restart, reset, restore.
    Try all of these.
    If these fail, then:

  • White Screen of Death and Wipe Did Not Work

    Hello -
I purchased my Blackberry 8900 a year ago and TMobile is my carrier.
I experienced a white screen of death on my Blackberry 8900 last nite while talking on it. It just dropped the call and the screen went white.  I shut it off then back on, white screen appeared after reboot.  I pulled the battery and left it out for 15 min, inserted it again and rebooted - still white.
I searched online and found a lot of info. My phone is recognized by the Desktop Manager software.  I was able to back up all of my data and applications.  I deleted all of the data on my phone through the DM as well (or thought I did - I can't tell if it worked or not).  I downloaded the current version of the OS from TMobile for reinstallation.
I downloaded JL Cmder to fully wipe the phone.  JL Cmder did not work on my home machine (Win 7) but I finally got it to work on my work machine (Vista) today.
I selected the wipe option (4) and JL Cmder successfully connected with the phone.  The phone rebooted and I got happy, but on phone reboot I did NOT get the "507" error all of the how-to sites say I'm supposed to get.  The phone rebooted with the same white screen and no error message.   I've run the wipe command from JL Cmder a few times on the phone and it connects, reboots but I still get the white screen with no error message.
Is there anything else I need to do to get this 507 error?  Or is my phone really dead?
I want to do what I can before I shell out more $$ for another phone.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thank you for your replies...
jmrmb80 - Yes the device is still recognized by the Desktop Manager.  I reloaded the OS on it this morning and the App Loader says it was successful - but on reboot the white screen loads and thats it.
billrobinson - I haven't dropped the phone since I bought it.  I wish I had b/c then I could blame it on something.  My friends drop their phones all the time, spill stuff on them etc.... and I do nothing - and my phone blows up

  • White Screen of Death - NOTHING IS WORKING

Right, I've had my blackberry for a few months now, it was bought from someone else. Only recently, my phone has been turning itself off and giving me the "white screen of death" but I've always managed to get passed it by removing the battery then restarting it.
But today, it has turned itself off, reloaded to the main screen where it then freezes, the screen goes white and it says "app error 523 - reset". Ive clicked reset about a billion times and it keeps doing the same thing over and over again.
Ive been searching on this site all day for an answer but nothing has worked. I downloaded blackberry desktop/device software but it won't find my device. I tried that app wizard loader thing, but that didn't work either.
And yes, my phone is charged.
I am beyond frustrated now, it's seriously p*ssing me off and I need some help!! I can't fill out one of those information things including the carrier, question and whatever else because I don't know any of mine!
Please help me, I am just getting more and more angry!!

Having an intermittent issue where my iMac blanks out on me. On restarting I get several bands running down the screen with pixels jumping around within the bands, then the white screen of death and nothing... This happens intermittently and usually restarts OK. Happened again three days ago and wouldn't restart for two days (again the bands/pixels etc) but now operating fine? Any ideas whats wrong with my iMac and what the solution may be? Also gets very hot from time to time, particularly if I'm playing music/watching youtube/movies for extended periods. Mac is 3.5 years old, running OS X 10.6.8, processor 3.4 GHz i7 memory 8GB 1333 MHz DDR3

If you live near an Apple Store, make a Genius Bar appointment to have the computer tested. Supposedly there is no charge for testing. Use 2nd link if not near an Apple Store or aren’t in the US.

  • N97 White screen of death (WSOD) with FW V11.0.21

I have my nokia N97 almost a week now. This morning opera mini froze and I couldn't turn it off so I removed the battery. After reinserting the battery and turned the phone on I got the White screen of death (WSOD), just a white screen with the word nokia on it. I tried to boot it without the simcard and also waiting 30+ minutes before reinserting the battery. But I still have de WSOD...
Do I have to keep it on to drain the battery or are there other methods to fix this problem. I don't feel like sending it to Nokia because I have to wait more than 2 weeks before it's fixed...
The past 2 weeks I have used it intensively, installed a lot of apps. Put 300+ songs on it and and some movies. I had the email widget on the home screen, I heard that's one of the problem on other forums...
Any ideas how I can boot up normally....
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    WSOD
    Hard Reset
    The combination is:
Shift + Space bar + Backspace + Power your phone
    Instructions to bypass WSOD:
All you need is: Methodology 1 as posted by some other user
    N97
    Charger
    Follow these steps:
    Turn off your phone.
    Insert charger.
Remove charger right after screen lights up.
Wait a couple of seconds till screen turns off and just after that press power button.
After standart vibration notification just put your charger in.
VOILA! You can insert your PIN again!
I am using this method for almost a month and it seems that this is only one way to boot up my N97.
It would be nice to hear if this method works for you
Anyway, I have found a solution, that works for me everytime the WSOD comes up. It goes like this when WSOD keeps coming up:
    Instructions to bypass WSOD:
All you need is: Methodology 1 as posted by some other user
    1. Pull battery and re-insert it.
    2. Power up the phone by holding the "Power button + RED key + GREEN key + Camera key" and wait 30 seconds or so.
    3. After the wait the phone should come up normally asking for the SIM passcode and everything is fine.
"Power button + RED key + GREEN key + Camera key" is a sort of "soft reset", it keeps all the installations and everything as opposed to the "hard reset".
Hope this helps, and let's all hope that Nokia QA start testing their smartphone software with a little more care. I cannot imagine that normal people would live with such blatant bugs.
    My solution to yesterday experience
    What I have done:
    1. Switch Off Nokia N97 by pulling out the battery
    2. Pull out the SIM CARD and Memory Card
    3. Switch on The Nokia N97 without SIM AND MEMORY CARD
    4. Then do the Factory Settings by going to phone menu options because by this time WSOD will be over.
    5. Then Insert the SIM and restart it.
    6. Again Switch Off the same and insert Memory Card.
    7. Switch on again and restore settings as backedup whether in your PC or memory card to get last settings.

  • OOB White Screen Of Death: Silverlight Installation required after each reboot.

    Hi,
we are getting White Screen Of Death on few user's machine for last few months and a number of users is getting added from last month for the same issue. Earlier we were using the CleanSilverlight from the following site
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2608523.
Now we have the following issue that requires immediate fix:
Whenever we apply CleanSilverlight then my OOB starts working fine but it start displaying same white screen after few days without any action (Installation/Uninstallation)
Whenever the system reboots then we need to apply CleanSilverlight and install the Silverlight once again on user's machine to work with OOB. It seems rebooting interferes with OOB application.
Both of these issues are very frequent from last one month. I don't know if any update to windows/browser is the root cause for the issue.
One the system is having the following configuration to run OOB:
OS name and version: Windows 7 32-bit
    Browser name & version: IE 8 & Google Chrome 38.0.2125.111 m
    Silverlight version: 5.1.30514.0
Any help would be greatly appreciated.Regards, Maddy

    Hi,
Clean the corrupted Silverlight installation and reinstall the Silverlight should fix the issue:
As mentioned above it does fix the issue but sometimes its not permanent solution, It just pop up once again.
I don't understand why should we downgrade the version of the Silverlight. Its working fine after applying CleanSilverlight
    and reinstalling Silverlight.
There must be something that's corrupting it. vize Antivirus, any new update etc.
Also I would like to know why the Silverlight is getting corrupted at all. Why do we need to apply CleanSilverlight?
Still looking for a proper solution.
    Regards,
    Maddy

  • App getting the "white screen of death" since iOS 8.2 update

    Hello!
Been playing an app called Solstice Arena since it came out. Now suddenly the game morphs into the "white screen of death" every time I hit the login button.
I tried all the usual things, turning the phone on/off, reinstalling the app, all to no avail.
Never had this problem before downloading iOS 8.2.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Here is a pic:

    Hello melsuzhen,

  • Imac crashes after 3 weeks!!!!  White screen of death-- Hard Drive died!??

    Good day fellow Apple-minded,
bought my missus a 27" Imac with a 1TB hard drive in the mighty United of States, just the other day.
I have become quite an Apple fan recently........mainly based on the high reliability compared to the products from Bill Gates and his henchmen.
HOWEVER, I was less impressed when the white "screen of death" appeared the other day while trying to boot up. It was night, so I spent a good few hours in this forum, trying to look for a solution.........before finally surrendering to bed.
The next morning to the Mac-doctor and he confirmed--> the Hard Drive--> R.I.P.
    After 3 weeks only!!
Luckily it will be changed under warranty etc, but still--> my question is: how common is this for the Imac?????
FYI: I flew the Imac out of the States, checking it in at the airline desk--> booboo??
    Thanks,
    MXP 150 Patriot

IMO, mere coincidence. Mechanical and electrical things break. When, no one knows. For HDs, normally within the first couple of months and then years later at their end of life. Since it's being replace under warranty, don't worry.

  • Unusual White Screen of Death

    Hello everyone,
yesterday my iphone 3G (2.2 firmware) showed me the white screen of death. i didnt dropped it or drawn it, everything was just as usual, but suddenly when i tried to call someone this white screen appeared (takin the whole display)and i couldnt do anything. i tried to reset it by pushing home and sleep buttons together but it didnt work out. it just became a brick with a black screen. i came home and plug into the itunes and restored it, but somehow this white screen still appears, and after i tried to reset it, it just came to be a brick again. resets are just a temporary solution. what is interesting that sometimes it comes back to working regulary. i can see my home screen, can make calls or txt, but then this problem comes up again. basically, i made a screen shot while i was seeing this white screen of death thing, and when it worked again come into my photos folder and saw that on these shots ive made everything is looking normally, BUT i was taking em while i had this problem. its seems very weird to me.
should i just go and change my iphone or there is any solution for the WSoD?

I'm having a similar problem. I'm getting a white screen several times a day, but a hard reset or sometimes simply waiting for 10 minutes brings it back to life again. One thing I realised was that the phone is still working when the white screen appears. I can swipe the unlock bar and hear the 'click', and it rings if I call if from another phone. Is your phone definitely frozen when you get the white screen? The fact that your screen shots look normal suggests it might still working fine underneath.
I haven't tried a full restore yet. I will do so, but I think it sounds like a hardware problem.
