890FXA-GD70 and RevoDrivex2

I am sure this question has been asked a million times, I bought a RevoDrivex2 240gig PCIe a while back and at the time the Revo drive would not work with my motherboard 890FXA-GD70. The drive has been sitting on a shelf all this time so now I have just updated my bios to the newest version and I am wondering if anyone has had any luck installing this drive with my motherboard.
Thanks

Gonna have to try it in a friends computer, I could only see the drive on the first cold boot...showed all drives in raid 0 but would disappeared once the computer moved on with the booting process. With that said, I could not update the firmware for the RevoDrive, used all different configs and different BIOS's  it's a no go for this board.

  • 890FXA-GD70 and multicard crossfireX and pciExpress speeds

    Hi,
I recently purchased the 890FXA-GD70 and am seeing some interesting issues.  I have 3 HD48701GB graphics cards and according to the manual version 1.1 i should be able to run them in:
    x16 x8 x8 pciExpress configuration in slots 1,5,6
(pc will boot but monitor never comes on, can only assume video cards are never initialized)
    or
    x8, x8, x16 in slots 1,3, and 5.
can get into windows but gpuz reads only x8 and x2, windows device manager only detects 2 4870 video cards.
Currently I am only using 2 cards in slots 1 and 5 which should yield x16 and x16, but according to gpuz I am only seeing x8 and x2 pciexpress speeds.
Also when using just one video card in slot 1 i see only x2 pciexpress speeds.  cpuz reports x16 max available.
Are there some settings in the bios i am missing? or maybe a jumper on the motherboard i am missing?  I also tried disabling cool and quite in the bios but that doesn't seem to do anything as the the mghz in cpuz report 800 with an x4 multiplier.

    Update:
So i kept messing with this tonight and made an interesting discovery.  I decided to try and get at least 1 card running at x8 speed so i tried just one in slot 3.  Fired up and w00t x8 speed.  Then to push my luck i tried a second one in slot 6, add crossfire bridge start up and bam x8 and x8.  So with this much success i decided to put the 3rd card in the 5th slot, change my crossfire adapters. Startup, get into windows, and only 2 cards detected... i thought.  So i went back into the bios with all three cards still plugged in and did the reset to default values or reset to failsafe, something like that.  Started back up still with three cards in slots 3,5,6 and gpuz gives me readings of x8, x8, x8.  I'm sticking with this for now but i'm wondering if after flashing the bios to 1.2 if reset to failsafe needed to be done to get all the settings back to a 'normal' state.
But for now my issues are resolved.
    Thanks for reading.

  • Problem with 890fxa-gd70 and temps (what the heck is going on?)

    System Spec:
    Antec Nine-hundred
    890FXA-GD70 bios 1.6
AMD 6x 1055t @ 3.5ghz (but prob happened even at stock speeds)
    Corsair H50 - (push : shroud : radiator : pull ) 26c / 42c (maybe???)
    2x 4gb G.Skill Ripjaw DDR3 1600
2x Seagate Momentus XT in RAID0
    BFG GTX275oc
    Muskin 550w PSU
The digital temp readout on the mobo says one temp, and various monitoring programs say different temps (when they say anything at all...)
Is this a known bug?  I've had time when Core Temp said my cpu was running at 12c.  Do I have a defective temp sensor on the mobo, or CPU?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Glendor...

And the REALLY wierd part is that the problem just went away over the weekend...  Go Figure!
Didn't do anything, didn't change anything, just logged into the monitoring apps to write down some settings and noticed the Temps are registering, and show a remarkable similarity.  The only one that is still slightly wierd is the TMPIN2 that still shows a 63-65c reading.  Wish I knew what that was...

  • MSI 890FXA-GD70 and 3Ware 9750-4i BIOS issues

This is my second build with this motherboard.  This post is just to help anyone who might be trying to get similar hardware combinations to work.
The BIOS revision is 1.7, which was the revision the board came with.
When running with a 3Ware 9750-4i board you will find that the 3Ware BIOS will complain about not being able to install.  At first it was complaining about the motherboard BIS not providing enough RAM to live in, but after I set the on-board SATA controller to AHCI is stopped complaining and just didn't show up at all.
Now, don't be discouraged if you aren't booting from the 3Ware controller, because this won't stop it from working.  When the OS loads the driver, everything is fine.
I suspect it would also work if you completely disabled the on-board controller, but that wasn't an option for me.  I wanted to run three additional HDs and two optical drives on that controller, as well as the four drives on the 3Ware.
I kept experimenting with slot positions for the cards, but nothing produced a change at all.
Finally I spent time in the OS trying to make the AHCI drivers for the on-board controller work with connect/disconnect.  There appeared no way in Win7 x64 to get any AHCI drivers to load but the default Microsoft ones, which don't support hot-swap or even connect/disconnect.
It appeared to me that the only AHCI drivers supplied by AMD or MSI specifically work only when the controller is in RAID mode.  So I tried setting the controller to RAID mode in the BIOS, and discovered that it now played nice with the 3Ware BIOS.  Now I am going to reinstall Windows 7 with the 3Ware drivers and select a 3Ware drive to boot from, to see if I can get the AMD or MSI-supplied drivers to work with the on-board controller.  I suspect I will get all the features promised then.  If I don't, I will return here and report the results.

I completed the new install of Win7 - this time with the 3ware controller as the primary, and the on-board SATA set to RAID.
First, I had to load drivers for the on-board RAID during the install, just to let the install continue.  Then I had to load drivers to tell Win7 about the drive where I wanted to install.  I thought it would ask for both up front, but it wouldn't take both - it only wanted the drivers for the controller to which the DVD was connected.  THEN, after it was ready to ask for a location for the install, it let me put the 3ware drivers up.
Once the system was loaded, I was disappointed to find that none of the on-board RAID drives showed up in the add/remove dialog, but I was able to use a utility to make them work with hot-swapping.  It is called Hotswap!
    http://mt-naka.com/hotswap/index_enu.htm
and it allowed me to connect/disconnect drives plugged into the on-board controller housed in the Thermaltake MAX-2533.
With the settings like that, the BIOS issues disappear, with both the on-board RAID and the 3ware co-existing nicely.  This indicates to me that there is likely something wrong with the standard AHCI BIOS-related screen that makes the 3ware controller unhappy.  I doubt the 3ware is the only BIOS-installing card to feel that way, so if you have your drives set to AHCI, but have issues with any other cards, you might look into setting the drives to RAID or to IDE (though you lose some features like NCQ)
I also forgot to mention that I also have a four-port PCI-Express NIC from Intel in the system, so I have updated the system summary below:
    MSI 890FXA-GD70 | AMD Phenom II X6 1090T | ZALMAN CNPS9900MAX-B | CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB CMZ16GX3M4A1600C9B |  HIS Silence H557HR1G Radeon HD 5570 | Antec Solo Black case | Corsair CMPSU-750TXV2 | 3ware LSI00216 (9750-4i) | Intel PRO/1000 PT Quad Port NIC | Seagate Barracuda XT ST32000641AS (x7) | Thermaltake MAX-2533 | Plextor PX-L890SA | Plextor PX-B940SA-11

I saw some postings with the 2e code but can't seem to find anything specific on it.
    Please help!

Go with just 1 stick of RAM for now.
Next, disconnect both hard drives. Can you enter BIOS?
Not sure if it makes a difference, but try both DVI ports
In meantime, ask around if you can borrow a video card. Svet knows BIOSes, if he says it's VGA error...
Any old PCI-E will do the job - like Radeon 1300/2400/3400 nVidia 7300gt/8400/9400 ...
You have a lot of stuff in the manual.
Make sure your systems is not OC'd (page 2-21)
Also look at LED indicators (page 2-26) maybe you'll notice something suspicious.
You also have a green power switch (page 2-20) and dedicated LED on the MoBo, so try both options.

  • MSI 890FXA-GD70 and Kingston KHX24C11T3K2/16X compatibility

Please, help me with answer: is this kit http://www.kingstonmemorycards.co.uk/kingston-beast-16gb-kit-of-2-8gb-dimm-ddr3-2400mhz-ram-memory-kit-xmp-khx24c11t3k2-16x supported by the motherboard?

The board has only little to do with the supported ram. Mainly your cpu needs to support it as it includes the mem controller. DDR3-2400 is out of reach with that AMD system as nothing above 2133 is possible (if your lucky) and that would still be oc no matter what cpu is used. It will most likely basically work but don't expect to use it's full potential. Furthermore we need to know what cpu you have to figure if it is of any use to buy high potential oc ram.

  • My 890FXA-GD70 FF story

890FXA-GD70 (used via eBay; unboxing seemed as if new)
    all new:
    AMD Sempron 145 CPU
    Corsair AX1200 PSU
    Corsair CMX4GX3M1A1333C9 1x4G DDR3 1333MHz PC3-10666
    ATI Radeon HD 5970 GDU
    Seagate Barracuda 7200 500 GB SATA ST500DM002
The board came with BIOS 1.9; I M-flashed it to 1.C (yes, I know M-flash is deprecated here, but I have no OS CD/DVD, only an OS USB and USB was not a boot option with 1.9; and I had the FF problem before the M-flash).
The unit consistently fails to boot, with no display output and FF in the debug LEDs, under the following conditions; in all instances, PSU 1/0 switch is in the 1 (on) position and power is controlled via the mainboard Power button: brief touch for on, extended touch for off:
    --cold power-on;
--power-on within 2-5 minutes of system shut-down (from within OS) or power-off (Power button).
    The unit starts up OK
    --if left in the "FF" state for at least 2-5 minutes, then powered off via the onboard Power button, then immediately powered on via that button;
--if system restarted from within OS.
Note that if the system is shut down via OS command and then immediately after the board goes dark and fans stop power is re-applied, it will go into and remain in "FF" mode.  This is why I don't think it's a temperature issue.
I have many times checked CPU and power connecter seatings, reset CMOS, checked RAM seating, moved RAM to DIMM slot 4 (as a test; its "home" is slot 1 nearest CPU).
When the system does start up OK, there are no apparent problems and it will stay up "forever."  The OS is Ubuntu 10.04.
I have reviewed all 11 threads that forum search returned for this board with both terms "890FXA-GD70" and "FF"; almost all end with advice to RMA the board, although there are a few success stories; one that I recall was via RAM stick replacement.  (I have new Kingston 2x2G RAM arriving tomorrow.)

Okey, then try please setting the memory speed down. I do believe you have bad talk between processor and memory. The processor may be the bad part, but more common are bad memory sticks.
I looked at the manual with particular attention to "Advance [sic] DRAM Configuration", but I still don't know which BIOS setting that is.
P.S.  I have new Kingston RAM, 2x2G, arriving later today; Kingston's web site says its compatible with this mainboard.

  • New 890FXA-GD70: Only the SB lights turn on

Hey gang, I just picked up a new 890FXA-GD70 and troubleshooting an issue.  When turning on the PSU, only the two SB lights turn on.  I don't get any other lights nor do the BIOS digits count up.   Is my board fired/DOA?
I've unmounted the board and placed it on a nonconducting material, connected the 24-pin and 4-pin power connectors, installed only one stick of ram,  my video card and cleared the BIOS.  Thinking it was the power supply, I went and purchased a new one.  Same result.
    Any ideas/thoughts?

Quote from: Bas on 11-August-11, 16:12:09
    What are SB lights?
The board has a step-counter does that do anything?
There are four indicator LED's on this MB.  CPU Phase (4 power phase modes), NB Phase (2 power phase modes), SB Phase (2 power phase modes), DDR Phase (2 power phase modes).  Only the SB Phase Indicator lights up showing that its in 2 phase power mode.
The step counter does not light up.

  • MSI 890FXA-GD70 issues

    Hi all,
I recently received my MSI 890FXA-GD70 and am having a few problems.
Firstly if I enable C1E in the bios the computer reboots as soon as it enters windows(short glimpse of desktop). This occurs in safemode aswell.
I have tried many different combinations of disabling turbo core and cool&quiet etc but it made no difference.
This occurs on stock settings even when loading defaults in bios.
    Secondly I have Apacer Giant II 2x 2GB DDR3 240-Pin DIMM, 1.65V [PC17600].
This ram can apparently run 2200MHz with 10-10-10-30 2T timings.
If I overclock slightly and set the RAM ratio to highest ratio then the system will not post and normally requires me using the cmos reset jumper. The ram speed is normally around 1900MHz at the overclock I desire. I have the above timings in place and have set the DRAM voltage to 1.65V
From what I can tell the motherboard is supposed to be able to run 2133MHz.
If I simply lower the multiplier so that the ram is running close to 1333MHz no issues.
Am I doing something wrong when it comes to running the ram at higher clock speeds?
I read somewhere that I should increase the CPU-NB voltage. I set this to one below red and I currently have the ram running at 1712MHz with 10-10-10-29 1T.
I am not sure what is safe here, but I do have pretty good flow in my case.
It seems that increasing this voltage must be necessary, but I would like someone elses opinion if possible.
Thanks for any help in advamce
    System specs:
    MSI 890FXA-GD70 Bios 1.6
    AMD Phenom II X6 1055T
    Apacer Giant II 2x 2GB DDR3 240-Pin DIMM, 1.65V [PC17600]
    MSI 8800GT OC 512Mb
    Huntkey 600W PSU
Corsair H50 in push pull config
    CM Storm case

Haha thx for that. Rookie mistake...
For all the other timings I was just pressing enter and changing it like that.
As for the C1E thing, even when its stock standard doesn't seem to work. It doesn't really bother me though.
Seems like the cool and quiet is clocking down the cpu anyway.
Is there anyway to test the turbo core easily, seems sort of random when it decides it will activate it.
I tried running prime on only 2 cores but it splits the load over all 6.
Any ideas of the ram speed. It should be able to run at least 1800+.
Any specific voltages I should increase?
Also when overclocking I have disabled the cpu phase control and left the ddr phase on, as I am not adding any extra voltage to the ram.
Not sure if this is correct, but if I clock to 4GHz with 1.377V then ControlCenter reports about 240W when under full load with Prime.
    Thanks

  • MSI 890FXA-GD70 starting problem

    Hello
I just got a new MSI 890FXA-GD70 and after all is plugged in and when i start the computer all the fans start but the bios doest show up. The strange thing is that most of the leds turn on (CPU Phase leds all light up and stay on, the DDR phase lights up and stay on) BUT, and this is the strangest part, the diagnostics display on the board doest even turn on. There is also no sound noises of any kind and I'm 99% sure i plug the speaker right.
I even started the board having no RAM and no HD to see if "anything" happened but always the same. Leds light up and stay on but nothing else. I'm using a CORSAIR AX1200 1200W for power. The CPU is an AMD Sempron 140.
This is also a good time to tell this is the first time i try to build a computer so any rookie mistakes i could have made, like something i forgot to plug, or any jumpers you can point and laugh
    Any ideas??
    Thank you

have you tried to boot with barabone setup and mainboard out of PC case?
there could be a shorting issue.
I have not! But it's going to be the first thing i will do as soon i get home. Like i said on top, i just find it odd the fact the leds light up and the diagnostics display doest turn on. If it's a shorting issue any chance i could have fried the board? Or that's is just some safety "thing"?

I bought a 890FXA-GD70 and received it today
I am testing on a large cardboard (not printed), onboard power button works and tuns on a led, psu fan starts spinning, both sb_phase leds flash once and psu fan stops.
cpu fan doesnt move, gpu fan doesnt move either.
After some seconds the power led flashes once.
cmos reset doesnt make any difference.
    System Specs:
Phenom II 965 C2 (worked on my previous system) And Phenom II 1090T (its new and cant try it on another system)
2X Kingston Hyper x KHX1600C8D3K2/4GX (total of 4 moudles, worked on my previous system, tried with a single module and same results)
Corsair HX750W (worked on my previous system)
Sapphire 5770 (works in another system)
1 TB hitachi hdd (works in another system)
problem is either the PSU or MB, any ideas of tests I should run or should I RMA right away?

Check all power cables, re seat the CPU.
Ensure that there is no shorting issue occur.
Try with another well known working and powerfull enough PSU

  • Noob assistance MSI 890FXA-GD70 recommendation

I am building a new computer mainly to play Eve Online and surf the web/homework blah blah blah. I picked this board (MSI 890FXA-GD70) and would like some assistance in picking the ram and if possible some input as to what i have chosen would be nice. I am unsure about buying ram for this board i dont plan on overclocking so i was going to get the 1333mhz but i was wondering if it would be a bad idea to get the 2133 1800 or 1600 ram even though I wont be setting it up for OC. although i say im not going to OC i like having the option maybe one day down the road i will. also this is not a mobo question but the game i play eve online requires atleast shader 3 for video and i dont see anything on the details for the video cards i was looking at about shader models so if you guys could take a look at what i have picked out for my new build and some input on my choices would be greatly appreciated.
    MOBO - MSI 890FXA-GD70 AM3 AMD 890FX
Processor - AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz
    Video Card - GIGABYTE GV-R687OC-1GD Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5
plan is to use onboard audio unless you guys talk me into getting a card and will be getting SSD maybe about 80gb to run windows/eve with another prolly WD blue for storage. And I will be getting aftermarket fan(s). this will be my first build so any input is appreciated. thx

There are so many correct, good choices.. you are asking for what we like. That can become a big list of answers that only confuse you. Compatibility... stability.. these are the important parts. If you go to the MSI website and look up your board, there is a list of tested memory, videocards and more. The CPU's are standard memory 1333. Anything else is an overclocking question. MSI did not test every available sold product on the market. The list is only the ones they did test. You will have to use possible other reference points if you want something not on their list.
The equipment you have listed for an opinion, are compatible. I would find it hard to believe the 6870 doesn't give you the shaders you want for your game. The card is loaded with great video graphic adjustable abilities. There is no Power Supply listed, get a good one. 500w ... more. Your videocard lists the minimum voltage requirement. You want a power supply with the amps you need.. not just wattage. Do some reading, you will pick a good one. Module Power supplies with removable wires can offer better ventilation, by not blocking air way with wires. But some of the good power supplies have all attached wire sets.
That's it for me. Unless you want to know if I like 'A' over 'B', and on-line reviews and other research can guide your buying decisions from there. I looks like you, with a good PSU and a good air flow case, your on your way. That will give you the start you want to use your PC and you can grow from there. Unless you have deep pockets, and then you can just go for it now. Oh yea... a Soundcard can't hurt. But the sound on the board is good.
    Good Luck.

I have a 890fxa-gd70 and 3 MSI Lightning R5870's and the 3rd one will not show up on ccc no mater what slot I put it in. It will always show the to 2 regardless of which card is in there it will not show the 3rd at all and if I hook a monitor to it it will not work either...

Sounds like a driver problem to me, but what do I know about graphics cards!
I suggest you post again, but in this forum:

Don't forget to add processor, memory, PSU, Windows version, and maybe other interesting data, driver version perhaps.

I have used Ultimate Boot CD to run Memtest and other stress tests and everything passes with flying colors. BIOS is loaded with defaults fail safe. Thanks for the help! It is appreciated. Power supply is Antec 380W. I have tried swapping out with identical one - both were brand new and I have had pretty good luck with Antec in the past so I kind of doubt that's it. Wish it was so easy! The machine is on a good line interactive UPS as well so power fluctuations are not causing this.
I am using the hardware RAID on the SB850 - it requires loading the latest driver from USB during installation. But prior to that it requires a Ctrl-F and into the RAID setup. I choose RAID 0 and then select both Intel 510 120GB SATA III. The two SSD have the exact same firmware which is the latest per Intel Website.
Drivers are the latest for Win7x64 from here:
    http://www.msi.com/product/mb/890FXA-GD70.html#/?div=Driver&os=Vista%2064
This problem is posted in two other spots - Intel Forums and Windows Seven Forums
    http://communities.intel.com/thread/28220?tstart=0
    http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-debugging/218850-bsod-msi-890fxa-gd70-w-2xintel-ssd-520-120gb-ssd-raid-0-a.html
No one has been able to solve it yet. Seems like MSI and Intel are both good companies but these products are not compatible in the configuration I am attempting.
