890FXA-GD70 BIOS v 1.80 Stability Issues

All,
I am wondering if anyone else is experiencing stability issues on the 890FXA-GD70 with bios v. 1.8
I was not able to Overclock at all with bios v 1.8
CPU = 1090T
DDR3 = G. Skill F3-16000CL7D-4GBFLS
GPU = HIS ATI 4980
PSU = Corsaid AX-1200
SSD = Crucial CT128M225
OS = Win 7 Ultimate 64-Bit SP1
with BIOS v 1.7 I had (And now again still have):
Bclk = 230 * 17.5 = 4.025 GHZ @ CPU Volt = 1.45 v
Memory = 1840 MHZ 8-8-8-20-1T @ 1.651 v
CPU NB = 2760 MHZ @ 1.30 v
HT Link = 2760 MHZ
with BIOS v 1.7 this was rock solid. However with BIOS v 1.8 not only could I not come close to this at all, I really was unable to OC at all.
In fact when I returned ALL setting to default, then set the DDR V = 1.651 and then enabled OC Genie lite, it wouldn't even boot. It just constantly rebooted for over 40 minutes before I gave up, cleared CMOS and then flashed back to 1.7.
Also, if I've posted this under the wrong section please forgive my ignorance.
Any and all post will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

OK,
I've set up a new thread here:
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=147110.0
However, to be fair, the problem I'm wondering about is stability/instability as it relates to BIOS v. 1.8 on the 890FXA-GD70.
I was only wondering if anyone else was having similar issues with that version of the BIOS.
I am NOT experiencing issues with the previous BIOS v. 1.7
Thank you.

  • IMPORTANT Technical Information RE: 890FXA-GD70 - BIOS/Memory/Boot-UP Issues

I have been having the same problem (see my post...user 'n9nu') as many others have and I have been researching this problem for a month now and come across a few important pages on other web-sites that address this very problem. While I have not read over 100 percent of them completely, they all pertain specifically to these situations with several users being able to resolve their issue(s) with the following sources. Several of the posts mention the instability with a few of the BIOS versions (1.8 and 1.9), so read up on these as well.

The above references are just several posts that discuss and in some cases alleviate problems with this motherboard. Upon trying one of the more popular methods to attempt a boot-up, I successfully booted in BIOS  bypassing that rude 'FF' BIOS code....however the happiness was short lived as I configured some settings in the BIOS and when I restart was presented with the FF again.
The method I used was to place one (1) stick of DDR3 memory in memory slot 4 (the furthest away from the processor) and was kinda surprised that it worked....and while happy, I didn't hold my breath.
I have BIOS version 1.9 currently installed and have been noticing many problems with that particular release, so I will be attempting to re-flash the BIOS to either 1.7 to bypass some of the other issues being reported or try version 1.8 again. I will keep on posting when I receive further information or come across a sure fix for this (a user oriented fix that is)...otherwise, it is going back for another RMA.
I am working with someone that I know that tricks out BIOS code in order to enhance/unlock/fix them and he is presently looking at it using the exact same hardware that I am to try and find out just what the exact issue(s) are and how to resolve them. This, of course, has nothing to do with MSI, but rather an attempt by someone who programs these for a living just to see whats what.

After spending 12-14 hours on the problem i can now safely give a detailed report of the problem
Disregard what i said before as they were just symptoms of another problem
It boots 100% stable if DIMM slots 1 2 and 3 are empty
it does not matter the make or model of the ram in slot 4 but the system boots and works flawlessly.
I ran extensive tests with prime 95 and memory tests.  It works flawlessly in this configuration.
As soon as a stick of ram goes into any other slot  either singular or dual channel the board does a rapid boot cycle
this constant power on and off if left too long corrupts the bios settings
bios setting problem is rectified by putting one stick of ram into dimm 4 and letting it reset itself in a stable enviorment
also while the system is stable i used the MSI software to check all the voltages and everything appeared normal
    However
if i make the system boot with standard memory configuration  such as one in DIMM 1  or 1+2  i get odd voltage readings
(extremely unstable if im lucky enough to get it to boot)
the NB voltage quickly fluctuates between 1.15  and 1.7+ every min or so  like if there are micro spikes in voltage
While this happens the 2 lights next to the slots indicating i believe the dram power phase blink
    But
When i only put a ram stick into DIMM 4 only one light for the powerphase is lit and it is stable
So this so far is not a corrupt BIOS chip to me but rather a symptom of another problem
I have another CPU coming in the mail tommorow  I will test it out along with a few other boards
    a 1090T
    2 890fxa-gd70's and some others
If i have a hardware problem it will surely be singled out
I will find out what the problem is with this board and post my result.

  • 890FXA-GD70 bios update via Live Updat & now won't load windows...help pls

    Hi There
First off, please excuse the fact that I am not very experienced with the tech aspects of a home build (which this is & I bought off the builder), or any build for that matter..
I was getting a 'keyboard/interface' press f1 to continue error message, when I started my computer, along with most of the usb ports not working when windows 7 ultimate (64) sp1 (build 7601) loads.
    Otherwise it was working fine..
So I deceided to follow the instructions of the Live Update tool & used the total installer to update the bios from American Megatrends V1.10 06/30/2011 to the latest bios. I know now that wasn't very wise (why is it even an option if it can do soooo much harm?).
After it updated the bios there was a question (which I don't recall of course), something about ROM I think and not being the same, with 3 choices to correct it and I'm pretty sure I went with the 1st option for it to be corrected.
So now when I turn the computer on it starts loading everything (I can get in to the bios setup), right after it shows the windows logo it flashes a blue screen with some type on it & goes to windows startup repair which of course doesn't help & tries to do a system recovery which also doesn't work.
I don't want to do any more damage by fiddling around with things I know little about.
I was encouraged to read in one of the post answers that if it gets to the point where Windows goes to load than the mobo is ok...hopefully!
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

yes the BIOS controls the CMOS from that User interface with all the settings menus!
and yes its in there where you can see what Drive mode its set at!
if its using the older style BIOS like my board has and not a UEFI then in this heading set:
1: go into your BIOS (press Delete)
    2: Integrated Perifirals
    3: On-Chip ATA Devices
4: Raid Mode <--- the options for that should be in there if its the same and may have been set to IDE mode before the update but may be set to AHCI now after you flashed the BIOS via live update which is more then likely why your getting a BSOD as it in the wrong operating mode!

  • 890FXA-GD70, crossfire cards, and Revodrive configuration issue

I have the MSI 890FXA-GD70 with BIOS v1.8B5 and my Overdrive works fine in Pie slots E-1,3,5,6. The drive does not work in E-4, which is a X4 slot. I have two 5850's in crossfire. According to MCI's manual, if I want both cards to be on x16 speeds, I have to install my video cards in slots E-1 and E-5 with no other cards in E-3 and E6. This leaves me with only the E-4 slot to install my Overdrive in, which does not work. The best I could do is Overdrive in E-1, one video card in E-3 which makes its speed x8, and one video card in E-5 which keeps its x16 speed. Any knowledge on how to achieve x16/x16 for video crossfire and utilize my Overdrive?

It is strange that the RevoDrive is rated as a x4 device but the motherboard bios locks up during posting. You will get a quick flash of the RevoDrive identified as a pair of 55 GB Raid 0 drives, then a black screen with a floating cursor on the upper left corner...that is it.  I am sure it could be remedied with a bios patch for that PCIe lane...

  • 890FXA-GD70 BIOS Recovery Requested.

    Hello Forum
I just put together a brand new system using the 890FXA-GD70 Motherboard and I have serious problems.
Occasionally the system will freeze and crash.
I will tell my story in order of how this began and all steps I have performed
While in the bios I attempted to change my boot order.  As soon as I changed the device the bios froze.   I started the computer back up
    No screen input.
Reset button does nothing.  System does nothing.
After about 10 reboots with bios resetting and such  I eventually got a message
    “BIOS Recovery Requested”  insert USB…
I tried to reboot a few times
Sometimes I would get the bios recovery requested message
Most times I would get nothing
Eventually I inserted a CF card with a bios image on it
Exact bios image on the MSI site  without changing the file name
The system would scroll the BIOS recovery message over and over until it rebooted
Said it disabled recovery just before it shut down
The machine now boots fine up till I need to start windows and it does not
So I restart and go through the whole problem over again and this time I restore the bios using the built in flash utility in the BIOS  I believe its MFLASH
After the flash and a bios settings reset, windows boots but the whole problem starts over again after trying to do something intensive.
So I re do everything as this is becoming normal procedure dealing with the system freezing in windows or in the bios (randomly in the bios  nothing specifically triggers it)
(everything as in reboot the system till I get the recovery message  put the flash card in and wait till it disables recovery   go into bios and re-flash it)
My last step was I flashed a fresh bios with MFLASH
and then did a memory test with microsofts ram test software outside of windows.  That froze about 7% in and caused the system to beep non stop.
And I’m back to start.  System does not boot, get the bios recovery message if I’m lucky.
No over-clocking is setup  and I use optimal (Auto) settings.
All problems occurs with either ram stick   either paired or alone
    Here is my equipment
    Motherboard : MSI 890FXA-GD70
    CPU : AMD|PH II X6 1100T 3.3G AM3 With OEM Heatsink and fan
    PSU : CORSAIR|CMPSU-650TX 650W
    RAM : 2Gx2|GSKILL F3-12800CL9D-4GB
    HD : WD Black SATA 2 1TB 7200RPM 32MB cache
Video Card : GeForce 7950 512 mb with PCI-E power conencted
OS : Windows 7 Pro 64  (legit fresh install)
    Other Details

    Liteon USB cdrom drive
Monitor is a 52 inch LCD TV using DVI input on a 25 foot cord on max video card resolution when permited 1080
Im guessing this is not a ram or cpu problem but the bios chip may be defective  and when the system loses the bios it freezes
otherwise why would i get bios checksum errors and recovery prompts after each freeze.
Please advise  this is brand new and i should not have something defective this soon.

  • 890FXA-GD70 BIOS setting AHCI

If i select AHCI or RAID, it can't detects the HDD.
I can only use default settings, IDE.
In Win7, no AHCI or SATA controller in Device Manager??
    Is my board faulty?

    Hi,
On Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate, I was just able to switch it to AHCI this morning.
    I found this:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_install/windows-7-ultimate-x64-will-not-install-in-ahci/282886d4-a614-405f-aa33-f484e7ce5e6d
The post by "PVertin" on 6/27/2010 has a link to this MS page:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922976
I just downloaded that .msi, and ran it on my Win7, and it found new drivers.  Then I shut the machine down, and went into BIOS and changed the setting from "IDE" to "AHCI", and then it rebooted and that was all.
As I posted on that MS Answers thread, I also had to install a hot swap utility, and after that I could hotswap the two SATA drives that I have in some trayless SATA docks.
Now, I'm trying to figure out how to switch Windows 2003 to AHCI.  That seems to be more involved :(...
    Later,
    Jim

  • 890FXA-GD70 bios settings for my Ram

good day to all, just bought this board and I'm wondering where should i set the base timings for my RAM? where should i put this timings manually 8-8-8-24? i know i have to enter the dram configuration in the bios now i dont know where to continue, sorry just a newbie here  , tnx.

How about providing information for your system. It's impossible to say what any RAM settings should be not having a clue what RAM you have. See my signature below for the type of information to provide.

  • MSI 890FXA-GD70 issues

    Hi all,
I recently received my MSI 890FXA-GD70 and am having a few problems.
Firstly if I enable C1E in the bios the computer reboots as soon as it enters windows(short glimpse of desktop). This occurs in safemode aswell.
I have tried many different combinations of disabling turbo core and cool&quiet etc but it made no difference.
This occurs on stock settings even when loading defaults in bios.
    Secondly I have Apacer Giant II 2x 2GB DDR3 240-Pin DIMM, 1.65V [PC17600].
This ram can apparently run 2200MHz with 10-10-10-30 2T timings.
If I overclock slightly and set the RAM ratio to highest ratio then the system will not post and normally requires me using the cmos reset jumper. The ram speed is normally around 1900MHz at the overclock I desire. I have the above timings in place and have set the DRAM voltage to 1.65V
From what I can tell the motherboard is supposed to be able to run 2133MHz.
If I simply lower the multiplier so that the ram is running close to 1333MHz no issues.
Am I doing something wrong when it comes to running the ram at higher clock speeds?
I read somewhere that I should increase the CPU-NB voltage. I set this to one below red and I currently have the ram running at 1712MHz with 10-10-10-29 1T.
I am not sure what is safe here, but I do have pretty good flow in my case.
It seems that increasing this voltage must be necessary, but I would like someone elses opinion if possible.
Thanks for any help in advamce
    System specs:
    MSI 890FXA-GD70 Bios 1.6
    AMD Phenom II X6 1055T
    Apacer Giant II 2x 2GB DDR3 240-Pin DIMM, 1.65V [PC17600]
    MSI 8800GT OC 512Mb
    Huntkey 600W PSU
Corsair H50 in push pull config
    CM Storm case

Haha thx for that. Rookie mistake...
For all the other timings I was just pressing enter and changing it like that.
As for the C1E thing, even when its stock standard doesn't seem to work. It doesn't really bother me though.
Seems like the cool and quiet is clocking down the cpu anyway.
Is there anyway to test the turbo core easily, seems sort of random when it decides it will activate it.
I tried running prime on only 2 cores but it splits the load over all 6.
Any ideas of the ram speed. It should be able to run at least 1800+.
Any specific voltages I should increase?
Also when overclocking I have disabled the cpu phase control and left the ddr phase on, as I am not adding any extra voltage to the ram.
Not sure if this is correct, but if I clock to 4GHz with 1.377V then ControlCenter reports about 240W when under full load with Prime.
    Thanks

Alright. So yesterday I updated the bios fro my board from 1.6 to 1.9, as well as all sound drivers. No sooner did I do that did I notice a constant static sound when hearing any audio. I use a Razer Megalodon headset, and have never experienced this problem until I updated. The drivers for the Megalodons are up to date as well. I've tired all USB ports on my system, and still no change. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Problem solved. Flashing back to 1.6 fixed everything. Thanks gentlemen. Much appreciated!
I know you're probably never going to even see this topic again but I just want to thank you
I had the same issue, I bought the Razer Megalodon headset myself, with the same motherboard only problem is my bios was version 1.12.
I re-rolled it back to 1.6 as they said and thanks to you guys I have got my problem solved as well.. after months of communication with HORRIBLE Customer service of razer.
I finally got this taken care of! Thank you so much guys! I am really happy haha

  • Oh Gosh,,,, MSI 890FXA-GD70 4 x 5830,, Was working fine,,, out of nowhere KABOOM

No it didn't blow up but now I can only get two cards working on this board. I have tested it on another power supply.
Am I missing something that isn't allowing me to use all the lanes? It was working fine under windows 7 x64 for a while until it crashed and wouldn't show all cards after boot up...
Has anyone had a similar problem?
I am still under warranty and have initiated an RMA but really don't want to go without the board for 2+ weeks.

    Board: MSI 890FXA-GD70
    Bios: Version = Newest
    VGA:   4 x undervolted 5830 AMD GPU's..... 900 engine 260mhz memory each card.
PSU:   Coolmax 1000 watt, Modular Single rail PSU (Also tested on a Corsair TX750)
    CPU: AMD Athlon x2 250 @ 3ghz
    MEM: 1gb Kingston DDR3 1333mhz
    HDD: 80gb WD Sata2 Drive
    COOLER: Stock
OC: none of cpu or memory.... GPU ONLY
OS: Windows 7 64bit Home Premium
I have numerous 890FXA-GD70 boards and they can run 4 or 5 cards without issue.... 5 cards when using the 1x slot with a PCIE 1x to 16x Riser cable.
The rig in question has Identical Sapphire Xtreme 5830's.... After a BSOD (unknown) when windows rebooted the cards were missing from device manager.. Tried changing the order or even running 3 cards instead of 4... All these GPU's have been tested in a different machine... They all work fine.
All extras in the bios have been turned off, eg. Sound, Lan controllers and so on...
Bios updated default settings set.... I even tried seating the cards differently in to the board....

  • Oc genie lite 890fxa-gd70 causes code FF

    Hey guys,
Im computer literate (enthusiast) but new to overclocking. I figured I would just do the genie untill i learned all the ins and outs of the complexity of overclocking properly, rather than just ramp the fsb and voltage without knowing what im doing lol. Well Whenever I try to activate the genie lite it restarts like it says it will do but wont boot and displays FF which seems cpu related. I dont know if my ram is to blame which i have a hunch it could be.

I had the same problem, and MSI advised me to update my BIOS to v1.8.  You might give that a try.  I flashed my BIOS to v1.8, but had other issues, so I reflashed it back to v1.7 before I tested the Genie Lite function.  Right now I'm running two 6950's in CF, and since everything is running smoothly without OC, I've decided to hold off on the OC Genie issues.

Thanks i better try that, although what other bugs did u get?
If you dont mind me asking what res and games are you playing that require dual cards? I always thought i needed cf or sli untill I built this thing, and im only on a gts450 but at 1920x1080 (23") I play crysis 2 demo max everything, Im just getting back into shooters, only other thing i have played is starcraft 2 and thats maxed too. I had the gts450 in my core2duo and thought i was lacking gpu for a while, guess it was really just the cpu that was weak, and that was only starcraft2 lol (e6400 no oc/2gb ram)

  • 890FXA-GD70 no post with PERC6i

    Per subject line; I have a 890FXA-GD70 which I can't get to post with a PERC6i card.
Board code FF and system restarts itself in a cycle. No video display. CPU phase 3 LEDs light up. 2 memory phase LEDs lit.
Remove PERC card; system posts fine & remains stable.
The PERC6i works fine in other systems (servers).
I know its not a desktop product but I've read other people's spec on other forums who've used this card successfully in this board.
I've disabled onboard Raid and all other I/O devices in the bios (v1.7). Next step is to contact MSI Tech Support but given the phase 3 CPU LEDs I'm wondering if there's a CPU setting in the bios I can adjust that might help or if there's anyone else who's had the same problem with this or another Raid card & resolved it??
    Spec:
    890FXA-GD70 (bios v1.7)
AMD Phenom X6 Thuban 1055T (not OC'd yet)
    2x4GB Gskill Ripjaws PC1333 (not OC'd yet)
    Asus EAH5830
    CoolerMaster SilentPro M1000

    Where do you put it?
In any of the available PCI-E slots. The GPU takes up the first 2 slots (x16 & x1). I’ve yet to try moving the GPU to another slot but afaik the GPU needs to be in the first PCI-E slot in this board in order to work...correct me if I’m wrong.

Is it that card in particular or any card you put in?
This card in particular. I need it to run ESX4i. The card works fine in other systems.

I get allergic reactions from RipJaws and CoolerMaster. But surely they can't be the culprits this time.  :undecided
TBH I was unaware of issues with RipJaws & CoolerMaster PSUs. Need to research it more.

You could try with a single stick of memory with correct/manuf. recommended voltage.
    Tried with 1DIMM; same.
Using default voltages. I’ll check what voltage is recommended by Gskill.
Tks for the replies so far.

  • 890FXA-GD70 and multicard crossfireX and pciExpress speeds

    Hi,
I recently purchased the 890FXA-GD70 and am seeing some interesting issues.  I have 3 HD48701GB graphics cards and according to the manual version 1.1 i should be able to run them in:
    x16 x8 x8 pciExpress configuration in slots 1,5,6
(pc will boot but monitor never comes on, can only assume video cards are never initialized)
    or
    x8, x8, x16 in slots 1,3, and 5.
can get into windows but gpuz reads only x8 and x2, windows device manager only detects 2 4870 video cards.
Currently I am only using 2 cards in slots 1 and 5 which should yield x16 and x16, but according to gpuz I am only seeing x8 and x2 pciexpress speeds.
Also when using just one video card in slot 1 i see only x2 pciexpress speeds.  cpuz reports x16 max available.
Are there some settings in the bios i am missing? or maybe a jumper on the motherboard i am missing?  I also tried disabling cool and quite in the bios but that doesn't seem to do anything as the the mghz in cpuz report 800 with an x4 multiplier.

    Update:
So i kept messing with this tonight and made an interesting discovery.  I decided to try and get at least 1 card running at x8 speed so i tried just one in slot 3.  Fired up and w00t x8 speed.  Then to push my luck i tried a second one in slot 6, add crossfire bridge start up and bam x8 and x8.  So with this much success i decided to put the 3rd card in the 5th slot, change my crossfire adapters. Startup, get into windows, and only 2 cards detected... i thought.  So i went back into the bios with all three cards still plugged in and did the reset to default values or reset to failsafe, something like that.  Started back up still with three cards in slots 3,5,6 and gpuz gives me readings of x8, x8, x8.  I'm sticking with this for now but i'm wondering if after flashing the bios to 1.2 if reset to failsafe needed to be done to get all the settings back to a 'normal' state.
But for now my issues are resolved.
    Thanks for reading.

  • Problem with 890fxa-gd70 and temps (what the heck is going on?)

    System Spec:
    Antec Nine-hundred
    890FXA-GD70 bios 1.6
AMD 6x 1055t @ 3.5ghz (but prob happened even at stock speeds)
    Corsair H50 - (push : shroud : radiator : pull ) 26c / 42c (maybe???)
    2x 4gb G.Skill Ripjaw DDR3 1600
2x Seagate Momentus XT in RAID0
    BFG GTX275oc
    Muskin 550w PSU
The digital temp readout on the mobo says one temp, and various monitoring programs say different temps (when they say anything at all...)
Is this a known bug?  I've had time when Core Temp said my cpu was running at 12c.  Do I have a defective temp sensor on the mobo, or CPU?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Glendor...

And the REALLY wierd part is that the problem just went away over the weekend...  Go Figure!
Didn't do anything, didn't change anything, just logged into the monitoring apps to write down some settings and noticed the Temps are registering, and show a remarkable similarity.  The only one that is still slightly wierd is the TMPIN2 that still shows a 63-65c reading.  Wish I knew what that was...
