890fxa-gd70 motherboard no longer posts; blinking ff debug code

As topic says I am no longer capable of starting up my computer.  Here is a detailed list of specs:
Msi 890fxa-gd70 mainboard
OCZ 1333mhz memory 2x2 gb
Amd phenom 2 1055t 6-core processor
Seasonic x-760 psu
ASus geforce gtx 580
Corsair a50 air cooler
After waking up this morning my computer was unable to post.  I had a very mild overclock of 3.5 ghz from stock 2.8 ghz at 1.39-1.4 volts and ram multi lowered to keep things stable.  I had an issue like this before involving g.skill memory but got this ocz kit to resolve the problem.  I breadboarded the setup keeping only one stick in the slot closest to the CPU.  Ive tried clearing CMOS while CPU out of socket and reseating CPU.  All 4 CPU phase LEDs light up, NB phase light up, sOuthbridge LEDs light up and 2 DDR phase LEDs light on the motherboard.  All these components were working before.  After using a known working 2-core phenom 555 CPU, working 550w psu from tt, and a plethora of video cards, I'm thinking the bios or DDR slots on the motherboard has finally kicked the bucket.  Is there anything else I can do to help resolve my problem?

A low post count doesn't necessarily mean the people trying to assist are ignorant buffoons.
agreed! i only have over 570+ posts but ive been building computers since the 1990's when processors whern't compact single packages and where on literally a pci type board!
low posts don't mean we dont know what where talking about and ignorant posts like that are likely to make it so you get no support from us as its disrespectful!

  • MSI 890FXA-GD70 mobo won't post with two graphics cards (non-crossfire).

As title of topic says, I have a Sapphire 4870x2 graphics card in the PCIE 1 slot and in the #3 slot I have an ASUS geforce 9600gt passively cooled inserted.  When powering on, no monitor signal.  With either card in ANY of the slots alone, the motherboard will post as intended.  I also cleared CMOS before using both and either together.  This is somewhat frustrating as I would absolutely love to use the geforce 9600gt as a physx card in many of the games I play.  Any advice on this one?

There are registry hacks available to make physx work with non-nvidia-primary graphics (ati) if you have an eligible graphics chip on-board.  I fixed the issue now.  Apparently, BIOS needed to know which graphics card was the primary - so by leaving the4870x2 connected first and connecting the 9600gt after (have a 120mm fan attached to the side of it with cable zip ties) things work as intended.  So yeah, i'll get those registry hacks working and physx going on this rig.  And please, if you're absolutely certain what you're saying say it.  Otherwise, please do some research before telling me what I can and can't do.

  • 890fxa-gd70 Motherboards Do Not Boot + video (please help)

So I have TWICE returned this model motherboard for a new one under warranty. The second time they asked me to make sure there was a problem with the board because they didn't detect any problems with the first board I RMAed.
So anyway, I press ON and the board never gets past a few leds lighting up. There is no error code because it doesn't even turn on. Things I have tried:
    Different PSU
    Different memory in each slot
    Different processor
Connected hard drive/ disconnected hard drive
Different graphics cards and 1 in each PCIe slot
I can't update the BIOS because it doesn't boot
I normally run the operating system off my flash drive.
It has always been on an anti-static surface (cardboard)
These boards worked for a little while then just randomly stopped working. The latest board I got booted up for a while then kind of went into a sleep mode that it could never wake up from.
If anyone has any ideas please let me know. It costs me $15 bucks every time I RMA this piece of crap. I have 2 different of these boards in my possession right now having the EXACT same problem!
youtube.com/watch?v=1QY99sMdF6Y  video of it not booting when it's supposed to.
The hdd light just stays on (red light) and those blue lights and nothing else powers on not even the fans.

All my cards are radeon hd 6870s
    AMD Sempron 145 Processor
The PSU is an OCZ ZX Series 1250W (+12VDC @ 104A Single Rail Design)
I also tried my other OCZ 1000watt on it with only 1 GPU plugged in.
The lack of booting happens with 0-4 cards plugged in. Just the lights come on, particularly the red hdd light stays lit.
I tried multiple different types of DDR3.
Currently, It's OCZ platinum 7-7-7 DDR3 1600. This is a product listing of the memory that I'm currently using for it: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227381
I was previously booting off a mambo 32gb USB but now I can't.
I also tried plugging in an SSD hard drive: 60GB Agility 3 SATA 6Gb/s.

  • 890FXA-GD70 Will not POST

I recently purchased a new MSI 890FXA-GD70 motherboard from Newegg.com, along with a couple other upgrades. I put together my new computer consisting of this motherboard, a new AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE CPU, 8 GB of RAM, and an older nVidia 9800GTX+ GPU. The memory and video card have worked in previous machines. This PC will not boot. It will not even POST. The lights on the motherboard flash like mad, and the LED readout just flashes "FF." I RMA'd it to NewEgg, but was denied due to peeling the sticker off the back of the MOBO, so now I'll send it to MSI. I'm hoping for some good news.

  • 890FXA-GD70 BIOS Recovery Requested.

    Hello Forum
I just put together a brand new system using the 890FXA-GD70 Motherboard and I have serious problems.
Occasionally the system will freeze and crash.
I will tell my story in order of how this began and all steps I have performed
While in the bios I attempted to change my boot order.  As soon as I changed the device the bios froze.   I started the computer back up
    No screen input.
Reset button does nothing.  System does nothing.
After about 10 reboots with bios resetting and such  I eventually got a message
    “BIOS Recovery Requested”  insert USB…
I tried to reboot a few times
Sometimes I would get the bios recovery requested message
Most times I would get nothing
Eventually I inserted a CF card with a bios image on it
Exact bios image on the MSI site  without changing the file name
The system would scroll the BIOS recovery message over and over until it rebooted
Said it disabled recovery just before it shut down
The machine now boots fine up till I need to start windows and it does not
So I restart and go through the whole problem over again and this time I restore the bios using the built in flash utility in the BIOS  I believe its MFLASH
After the flash and a bios settings reset, windows boots but the whole problem starts over again after trying to do something intensive.
So I re do everything as this is becoming normal procedure dealing with the system freezing in windows or in the bios (randomly in the bios  nothing specifically triggers it)
(everything as in reboot the system till I get the recovery message  put the flash card in and wait till it disables recovery   go into bios and re-flash it)
My last step was I flashed a fresh bios with MFLASH
and then did a memory test with microsofts ram test software outside of windows.  That froze about 7% in and caused the system to beep non stop.
And I’m back to start.  System does not boot, get the bios recovery message if I’m lucky.
No over-clocking is setup  and I use optimal (Auto) settings.
All problems occurs with either ram stick   either paired or alone
    Here is my equipment
    Motherboard : MSI 890FXA-GD70
    CPU : AMD|PH II X6 1100T 3.3G AM3 With OEM Heatsink and fan
    PSU : CORSAIR|CMPSU-650TX 650W
    RAM : 2Gx2|GSKILL F3-12800CL9D-4GB
    HD : WD Black SATA 2 1TB 7200RPM 32MB cache
Video Card : GeForce 7950 512 mb with PCI-E power conencted
OS : Windows 7 Pro 64  (legit fresh install)
    Other Details
USB keyboard Merc Stealth , Microsoft USB Intili Mouse , Internal 5 Port USB cardreader,
    Liteon USB cdrom drive
Monitor is a 52 inch LCD TV using DVI input on a 25 foot cord on max video card resolution when permited 1080
Im guessing this is not a ram or cpu problem but the bios chip may be defective  and when the system loses the bios it freezes
otherwise why would i get bios checksum errors and recovery prompts after each freeze.
Please advise  this is brand new and i should not have something defective this soon.

After spending 12-14 hours on the problem i can now safely give a detailed report of the problem
Disregard what i said before as they were just symptoms of another problem
It boots 100% stable if DIMM slots 1 2 and 3 are empty
it does not matter the make or model of the ram in slot 4 but the system boots and works flawlessly.
I ran extensive tests with prime 95 and memory tests.  It works flawlessly in this configuration.
As soon as a stick of ram goes into any other slot  either singular or dual channel the board does a rapid boot cycle
this constant power on and off if left too long corrupts the bios settings
bios setting problem is rectified by putting one stick of ram into dimm 4 and letting it reset itself in a stable enviorment
also while the system is stable i used the MSI software to check all the voltages and everything appeared normal
    However
if i make the system boot with standard memory configuration  such as one in DIMM 1  or 1+2  i get odd voltage readings
(extremely unstable if im lucky enough to get it to boot)
the NB voltage quickly fluctuates between 1.15  and 1.7+ every min or so  like if there are micro spikes in voltage
While this happens the 2 lights next to the slots indicating i believe the dram power phase blink
    But
When i only put a ram stick into DIMM 4 only one light for the powerphase is lit and it is stable
So this so far is not a corrupt BIOS chip to me but rather a symptom of another problem
I have another CPU coming in the mail tommorow  I will test it out along with a few other boards
    a 1090T
    2 890fxa-gd70's and some others
If i have a hardware problem it will surely be singled out
I will find out what the problem is with this board and post my result.
If anyone has any suggestions to make this board work please comment

  • 890FXA-GD70 Will Not Wake From S3 Sleep

890FXA-GD70 will not wake from S3 sleep; the power comes back on and the fans run but the video never returns and the system hard locks with a POST code of 22 or 24. Other than this issue the system is rock solid.
    Windows 7 Ultimate 64
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Processor
    Sapphire 5870 Graphics
    Crucial M4 SSD
    Corsair DDR3
    No overclock
I have reproduced the issue on two 890FXA-GD70s motherboards and I am convinced that this is not a result of a failed motherboard. I also was able to move my fully installed SSD hard drive, processor, memory and graphics card to an Asus 890FX board and successfully wake from S3 sleep proving that my OS and driver installation are working correctly.
I know how to properly set the BIOS as I have installed many 890GXM-G65 motherboards for S3 sleep without issue. The problem seems unique to the 890FXA-GD70.
Is there a fix for this?

I have identified the cause. The "Extra RAID/IDE Controller" must be "Enabled" to use S3; otherwise the system will hang on the wake event. This is true even if the "Extra RAID/IDE Controller" goes unused. The "Extra RAID/IDE Controller" must be set to "Enabled" for S3 sleep to wake.
This would seem to me to be a bug since none of the other MSI boards I have used require the optional IDE controller to be enabled in order for S3 to function properly.

Need help overclocking a AMD Phenom 2 1100T cpu on a 890FXA-GD70 motherboard. I only want to overclock the cpu, not my ram. Basically, I need to know which voltages to change and at what voltages to start at. Also, I've currently have the cpu multiplier and Turbo Core multiplier set at 3.7/3.9, not the stock 3.3/3.7.
    Computer Spec's
    NZXT Tempest EVO case
    MSI 890FXA_GD70 motherboard
    AMD Phenom 2 1100T cpu
Corsair Hydro Series H80 heatsink (mediem setting)
    G-Skill Ripjaws Series DDR3 1600 ram 16 gbs @ 9-9-9-24-40-2T (going to be getting Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1866 16 gb. kit in 2/12)
OCZ ZX Series 1250 watt modular psu
OCZ Vertex 3 120 gb. Max IOPS ssd
2 Western Digital Caviar Black 1.0 tb. hard drives
HIS Digital IceQ X Turbo X Radeon HD 6950 2.0 gb. video card (getting 2nd IceQ X TurboX HD 6950 2.0 gb. for CrossfireX next month)
    Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1850 tv tuner
    Windows 7 Professional SP1 x64

If you didnt adust the multipliers for anything or changed the FSB then simply bump your CPU (Not CPUNB) to about ~1.42v   that should keep it stable.
Run Prime95 or Intel Burn test for a couple hours to make sure

  • MSI 890FXA-GD70 - Can you use all 6 PCI Express expansion slots at once?

    Hey all,
I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to use all 6 PCI Express expansion slots on the motherboard (the 5 Full x16 slot and the 1 x1 slot) at the same time?  I know I'd lose the capability for x16 bandwidth but does using any of the slots automatically disable any of the other slots?  I have 6 single wide x1 PCI express cards I want to use at the same time and they do not all seem to be getting recognized by the OS (W7 x64).
    Specs on the machine are:
    890FXA-GD70 Motherboard - BIOS 1.9
    AMD Sempron 145 CPU
    4 GB DDR3 Kingston RAM
WD 160 GB Blue SATA HD
    Win7 x64
    Thanks!

    • 5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots
    - PCI_E1 supports up to PCIE x16 speed (when PCI_E3 is empty)
    - PCI_E5 supports up to PCIE x16 speed (when PCI_E6 is empty)
    - If you want to install two graphics cards, please use PCI_E1 & PCI_E5 slots
    - PCI_E3 & PCI_E6 support up to PCIE x8 speed
    - If you want to install four expansion cards into PCI_E1, E3, E5 & E6 slots, these four PCIE x 16 lanes  will auto arrange from x16/ x0/ x16/ x0 to x8/ x8/ x8/ x8
    - PCI_E4 supports up to PCIE x4 speed
All PCI-E slots can be filled at the same time with no problem.
    They will run at x8,x8,x4,x8,x8
The question mark is the small PCI-E x1 slot.
It's not clear if will affect others or will be disabled, or will work fine with x1 speeds as adverted.
What hapends if you fill 5x of those cards into the five of the PCI-E slots, except the small PCI-E x1 slot?

  • Do MSI intend to implement BIOS support for IOMMU in its 890FXA-GD70 ??

All three of Asus 890FX boards officially support IOMMU in their BIOS -
    see the following two links:
    http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?id=20100609185547531&SLanguage=en-us&board_id=1&model=M4A89TD%20PRO/USB3

    http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?id=20100606232119109&board_id=1&model=Crosshair+IV+Formula&page=1&SLanguage=en-us
Now we ask for MSI's official stance on implementing IOMMU support in an upcoming BIOS for its 890FXA-GD70 motherboard.
And, if affirmative answer could you give us an approximate date when to expect a beta BIOs to try out?
The following OS environments should be able to take advantage of any hardware I/O virtualization support:
    -Xen 4
    -Linux+KVM
    -Vmware ESX(i) (VMDirectPath)
    -Parallels Workstation Extreme 4.
-Plus there's also a IOMMU wish ticket out for Oracle's Virtualbox...

I contacted AMD a few weeks ago to clarify whether the IOMMU feature is available in the 890 FX chipset and this was their response:
"Thank you for contacting AMD. I would like to verify for you that yes, the 890FX chipset does offer the IOMMU feature, however you will want to keep in mind that manufacturers can decide to enable or disable this feature through the BIOS and therefore you will want to verify with manufacturer of your specific board. But in short, yes it does offer the ability to do so."
    Pre-Sales Support -> http://us.msi.com/msi_user/PreSaleForm.aspx
I had contacted pre-sales support before purchasing my board and they said IOMMU was supported, however now that I have the board I know that the bios does not have the necessary support.  Most likely they just thought I was asking about SVM.
I submitted a support ticket asking when/if they were planning to add support but again there was some confusion about it being different from SVM.  Still waiting to hear back, I'll let you know when I do.

  • 890FXA-GD70 + Phenom 2 1090T + X?

Hi! I have an MSI 890FXA-GD70 motherboard and an AMD Phenom II 1090T 6-core processor. I've been trying to decide what kind of RAM to buy, and, since the Corsair memory that I was hoping to get isn't in stock anywhere in Finland, I'm thinking of getting some G.Skill instead.
That said, I was hoping that you could tell me, is G.Skill Flare 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 2000MHz 7-9-7-24 (or two) going to work for me? I'm actually hoping to get 8gigs of RAM, so, would a G.Skill Flare 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 2000MHz 8-9-8-24 be better? Would they work at said speeds with these motherboard and CPU? I suppose that two sticks is better than four in dual channel mode. I need fast memory for games, and lots of it, too (for virtualisation and such).
Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!
ps. Disclaimer: I'm tired. Lower-than-normal IQ is to be expected.

The Thuban E0 stepping cpu has a much better IMC than the denebs had and is capable of ram speed of upwards or 2200Mhz. Thought "most" motherboards will "default" the ram to 1333Mhz in the bios.
This means to be able to reach the rated speeds (or close to it if you have a shotty chip) you much over clock the ram from within the BIOs and experiment with suitable ram timings to gain stability.
(If you have to google any of the terms I have discussed or do not wish to spend the hours putting in the work testing stability; than you are not ready to do this)
Some screen shots of Geil Evo two @ 2000Mhz+
(These terms below you can google lol)
Even though Thuban is able to reach the higher dram speeds AMD has always performed better using lower frequency and tighter timings. Currently I would recommend ram with HyperX(henix) chips over the PSC chips.
Though the PSc chips are lower in cost and have higher frequencies which make them VERY attractive, the hyperX chips are much more stable with lower CAS settings. This means that hynix/Hyperx are able to perform equally or better @ 1600Mhz than the PSC chiped ram @ 2000Mhz

  • 890FXA-GD70 ram sugestions

    Hi,
I have a 890FXA-GD70 motherboard and I currently have OCZ Reaper DDR3 12800 2x2Gb and find myself running out of ram very fast while using lightroom and photoshop for editing images.
It dose not have to be DDR3 1600 as phenom2 only supports 1333. I've read that 1333 is mainly for 2 sticks of ram and has to be dropped down to 1066 when using 4 sticks while overclocking. That's not ideal but i'm willing to sacrifice marginal speed for more ram.
I currently do not overclock my cpu, i have however tested it and its stable at 4.0 ghz with only using the multiplier and voltages. So when it starts showing its age in a year or two I plan on overclocking it then, but do not want to have trouble with the ram when i start to overclock.
I would like to put 4x4 (16Gb) of ram into my pc to remedy me running out of ram while using editing programs. The reason i would like to use 16Gb is because i recently put together a panoramic image in photoshop with only 6 pictures, and soon as it started compiling them the ram usage just shot up like a rocket, and i plan on using 20 or more images on other pano's.
Some suggestions of 1333+ DDR3 4x4Gb (matched sets only plz) that would complement my board would really help me out.
Below is the set i was looking at, but was informed that it was for intel only, not really sure what the difference may be but.

  • New Build, Won't POST, Debug code stays at 00

I just got done building a new MPOWER MAX with an I5-4670K.  The build is a new power supply, motherboard, CPU, RAM.  Video card I was using was in an old system and worked fine.  24 pin power, and the 2x 8 pin power supplies are all hooked up.
I have torn the PC back apart to where it's now just Motherboard, and CPU.  No RAM, no Video card, no HDD's, no DVD drive.  The system will not POST, and the Debug code never changes from 00.  I have even pulled off all the front panel Power/LED/Speaker connectors.
I have also tried switching the BIOS toggle switch, and cleared BIOS from the back panel.  I don't know where to go with this since it won't even give me a code of any kind.
