890FXA-GD70 SATA drives causes Mid POST hang

Hi,
I experienced a strange problem today when my PC couldnt startup. The POST debug shows error code of 3C "Mid post initialization of chipset registers". After going through some forum and a guy reported that disconnecting his CD rom drive solved the problem, I disconnected every one of my drives (SATA HDD + DVD ROM). Finally after several tries I found that one of my SATA HDD is causing such problem. I disconnected it and the PC boots up fine.
Has anyone encountered such problem before? Is there any way to boot the PC even with the affected drive connected so I can run test on the drive to check whether it has crashed etc.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

A failed drive I imagine just wouldn't get detected by BIOS and POST would continue anyways.
Depending on the defect, a bad drive is in fact able to stall the system during P.O.S.T..  I have a drive right here that went bad and does exactly that (tested in three different systems).  The findings of Mityangel do not point to a processor issue.
Yes, many problems during P.O.S.T. are (statistically speaking) CPU and/or memory related.  However, the 3C AMI BIOS P.O.S.T. Checkpoint that the system seems to get hung up is definately located way past the processor and memory initialization phase which actually does not occur during the P.O.S.T. Routine, but before that (when the BIOS Boot Block Routine is executed (which happens before the actual System BIOS is decompressed into system memory --> the actual P.O.S.T. Routine starts right after that.))

  • 890FXA-GD70 SATA 3.0 ???

Running a MSI 890FXA-GD70 along with a WD1002FAEX drive. Both are supposed to be SATA 3.0 compliant.  All disk check/benchmark programs show the drive is connected SATA 2.0 and transfer speeds are horrible for this level of technology....less than 120mb/s.  My other SATA 2 drives are reaching 115 mb/s speeds.
Does anyone have this motherboard and this drive, or any SATA 3 drive and does either Western Digitals DiskCheckup or HDTune2.55 utility show it connected SATA 3?
MSI wants me to send the MB back for a replacement but as you builders know it's a real pain and I will have to cover shipping costs.

If the drive has a jumper pin limiting bus connectivity you should remove the jumper pin to enable sata 3.0.  Jumper pins are still on even newer hard disks to ensure compatibility and unfortunately for you are put on default to decrease issues from the get go.  Also, once you remove the pins you may only notice a very minimal speed increase going to sata 3.0.  Platter drives at 7200 RPM can only perform so fast.  If speed is what you want, fatten your wallet for a SandForce-controlled SSD or wait for their second gen drives which promises to utilize the full bandwith of SATA 3.0 6Gbps speeds.

  • After 10.5.6, external drives cause boot to hang

When I boot my iMac, it hangs with the grey apple on a white screen of I have external firewire drives attached. It never gets to the point where the little gear starts revolving. When I unplug the drives, the boot goes to completion.
After booting, I can use any number of external firewire drives with no problems. All of my drives have passed Disk Utility checks.
I have several firewire 400 and one firewire 800 drive, all cause the same problem. I have tried resetting the firmware, which doesn't help.

Sorry, my posting indicated in the section below about my machine, that I use 10.5.5, but I use 10.5.6.

  • Mounted Drives Cause Applications to Hang on Connection Change

When I change from wired to wireless connection to my network (or vice versa) mounted volumes seem to cause applications using those volumes to hang. This happens when going from wired to wireless, or vice versa, and happens regardless of the path (wired + wireless -> wired; wireless -> nothing -> wireless; wireless -> wired, etc.). Affected applications do not recover until the original connection is restored. Un-mounting all Volumes before switching prevents this problem. This problem causes the Finder to hang if an unmount or browse of a mounted volume is attempted after the switch.
(All volumes are on the same network on the same workgroup as the affected Mac. Wireless is via an AirPort Express connected to the same router as the Mac.)

Well, maybe Windows has a hook to explicitly "turn off" a network interface, which shuts down the TCP connections; and maybe OS X doesn't have this.
It should be "a long time" (on the order of 10 minutes), not forever.
I think that unmounting prior to the switch is the only way to prevent this. If there is another way, it probably involves using ifconfig in Terminal to force the old interface down (which might explicitly tell TCP to give up on the old connections).

  • MSI PRO-E takes forever to autodiscover the SATA drives in RAID mode

If I change the bios from IDE to RAID, it takes at least a minute to find each SATA drive during the post.   Any ideas?  The bios is at 8.2 so I'm wondering if a flash to 8.5 would help.
    Thanks,
    lavesa

I flashed the bios to 8.5 and I still have the same problem.  These are older SATA drives so I wonder if it's a compatability issue.  Maxtor 6Y120MO drives.  They were fine on my old Gigabyte MB with SATA Raid.  They are at least 6 years old though.
If I leave the RAID type to IDE, the bios picks up one of the drives quickly.  These drives actually have the normal IDE power connectors on the drives.
    Any help is appreciated!

  • MSI 890FXA-GD70 AM3 - Hard Drive in Sata Port 6 Not recognized in WIN7-[SOLVED]

I just bought this motherboard (MSI 890FXA-GD70 AM3), new memory, case and processor.  I love it.  But while I can put something together, I do not consider myself much more then an experienced novice.
Anyway, I bought a 5th hard drive and plugged it into SATA connector 6.  Connector 5 remains unused.  The new hard drive is recognized when the BIOS boots, but in Windows 7, I only show the first 4 drives like always.  I just want to use this drive as a 5th hard drive for normal use and storage.
I went into the BIOS to see if there was a setting I was missing; read through the posts to see if I could find the answer; and prayed to GOD, but nothing has worked!  I have found nothing on this topic, but then the FORUM is hard to navigate after a while with people not carefully choosing their topic subject name.  (Why do people sometimes post - I HAVE A PROBLEM - without anything in the SUBJECT line to help the casual reader know what they are asking about?)  My searches were fruitless, but then I know the key to a good search is using the right keywords.
I know this is going to turn out to be a simple setting, but can you help?  Thanks in advance!  And when the solution is presented, I will post back that ALL IS WELL!

PROBLEM SOLVED!  Found it myself through careful research.
This is the link that helped me: http://www.ithinkdiff.com/how-to-enable-ahci-in-windows-7-rc-after-installation/
Apparently, because I had IDE and not AHCI enabled in the BIOS, only the first 4 ports were being identified.  AND because I had not not changed the BIOS to AHCI before the installation of Windows 7, NO obvious way to change the setting AFTERWARDS!
In part what the post link above states:
AHCI  (Advanced Host Controller Interface) enables native command queuing and hot-plugging through SATA host controllers (Serial-ATA) for your hard drives. In many scenarios it enables more efficient multi-tasking. Vista was the first Windows OS to support AHCI out of the box, where as Windows 7 does the same. But an issue with AHCI is that if you install the OS without enabling AHCI in the BIOS, enabling it after installation will render your OS unusable. This is because Windows disable the AHCI driver since it is not needed during the installation.
There is one way to fix this, although you need to have knowledge of registry editing. The detailed steps from Microsoft are as follows:
To resolve this issue, enable the AHCI driver in the registry before you change the SATA mode of the boot drive. To do this, follow these steps:
       1. Exit all Windows-based programs.
       2. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
       3. If you receive the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.
       4. Locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlS etServicesMsahci
       5. In the right pane, right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify.
       6. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
       7. On the File menu, click Exit to close Registry Editor.
After this you’ll have to restart your computer, go to BIOS and enable AHCI. When you log in to Windows again, you’ll notice the installation of drivers for AHCI. Another restart will be required to finish the driver installation.
I had been trying to select something in the BIOS other then IDE (choices are IDE, AHCI and RAID) to see if that would result in my 5th drive being recognized, but when I selected AHCI or RAID, the OS would flash the EVIL blue screen before it completed booting into Window 7.
I copied the instructions here in case the link gets disabled in the future.  This link explained why I was having the problem I was having and how to solve it.
Thanks to everyone who tried to assist.  I consider this closed.

  • What could cause "2A" code on 890FXA-GD70 mainboard?

My MSI 890FXA-GD70 now stalls at the point where it displays the code "2A."  Can someone describe the possible cause(s) of the mainboard stalling at "2A"?
I even contacted MSI and received a refurbished mainboard, which I installed this weekend but it presents the same error.
I observe that all other lights and all fans appear to be working just fine, but I never see any video at any point (no MSI splash screen, no BIOS, etc.) during the brief boot process before it reaches the "2A" display.
I have tried two different PCI-Express video cards and neither one changed the mainboard's behavior of stalling at "2A."
My computer worked flawlessly for nearly three years before experiencing this problem.
    Here are my PC's components:

       * XFX HD-567X-ZNF3 Radeon HD 5670 1GB 128-bit DDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card
I also tried swapping out the XFX video card listed above with the following, purchased new:
       * SAPPHIRE 100358L Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Video Card
In addition, I tried installing both video cards in different PCI-E slots on the mainboard, in case one of the PCI-E slots has gone bad.  (I even tried booting without any video card, and did get a different code, but I can't remember what it was.)
I tried all of the troubleshooting steps described in prior threads related to the "2A" code, such as:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=145187.0
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=151534.0
That includes swapping out RAM sticks, including one at a time.
And I also dutifully followed all of the suggestions offered by an MSI technician by telephone.
I even plugged in different keyboards (PS/2 and USB), different mice, etc.  (Grasping for anything that might present a different mainboard code at this point!)  But nothing makes a difference.
    Any other ideas?
Should I just request of MSI a new RMA# to get yet another refurbished mainboard?  (The MSI tech I spoke to previously about this "2A" code seemed convinced it was a defective mainboard when he authorized the first RMA.)
Or should I just keep buying new video cards until I install one that works?  (I only have one desktop PC with PCI-E slots, my other active desktop PC uses AGP.  So I can't verify that the video card works in a different PC; I can only trust that buying a new, highly-rated video card didn't result in the bad luck of getting one that was DOA ... but I suppose theoretically that's possible, however unlikely.)
    Thanks!

I'm still unable to get past this code "2A" stall.  Can anyone help?
Among the troubleshooting steps I've tried since my February 24 post, none of which made any difference/improvement in the stalling at "2A":
Unplugged all SATA drives and power connections to those drives (2 hard drives and 1 CD/DVD drive) and tried to reboot.  Result = stuck on "2A"
Unplugged all external peripherals (e.g., mouse, keyboard, ethernet, etc.) and tried to reboot.  Result - stuck on "2A"
Unplugged all external peripherals and all SATA drives and tried to reboot.  Result - stuck on "2A"
Unplugged all front panel connections - except the connection to enable the power button needed to reboot the system - and tried to reboot.  Result - stuck on "2A"
Disconnected all power supply connections, except the CD/DVD drive (to put a small load on the power supply), and tested out the power supply with a volt meter (multimeter).  Result = 100% of the molex, 24-pin, and other power supply wires are delivering the expected volts.
Are there any MSI representatives available who can provide more detailed information about what the "2A" code indicates?
I found the following information about code "2A," but I'm not sure whether it's applicable for my specific MSI mainboard, on a PDF provided by American Megatrends (BIOS company) titled "AMIBIOS8 Check Point and Beep Code List" from 1988:
    Quote
Initialize different buses and perform the following functions: Reset, Detect, and Disable (function 0); Static Device Initialization (function 1); Boot Output Device Initialization (function 2). Function 0 disables all device nodes, PCI devices, and PnP ISA cards. It also assigns PCI bus numbers. Function 1 initializes all static devices that include manual configured onboard peripherals, memory and I/O decode windows in PCI-PCI bridges, and noncompliant PCI devices. Static resources are also reserved. Function 2 searches for and initializes any PnP, PCI, or AGP video devices.
    Thanks!

  • Msi 890fxa-gd70 posting problems

the problem started after i installed a new thermaltake frio cpu cooler, i installed it outside of the case on the box the motherboard came in. I get the splash screen but the keyboard wont respond and hangs at code 38 with a usb mouse and keyboard and one sata Hdd & dvd drive plugged in. if i remove the mouse and keyboard it goes to code 78 and hangs. if i remove the hdd & dvd drive it cycles through and tells me i have no boot device. i have tried different combinations and tryed moving the ram around, just 1 stick!. i have tried clearing the cmos throughout doing the different combinations. I have tried all the different sata ports for just the hdd, and i have tried all the different usb ports to try to get the keyboard to register, i did also try another known working usb keyboard. this motherboard has never been OC'ed this is a custom build computer for a friend so i only have limited time to keep messing around with combinations of hardware. the ram is tested and i also tried using one of my sticks from my rig with no luck. so here is the specs
    msi 890fxa-gd70 mobo - bios 1.6
AMD phen II 555 BE - no oc and no unlocked cores
    G. Skill rip jaws 1333 mhz cas 9
this rig was working perfect for 2 weeks before i tried to install the new HS, i already checked the pins on the cpu to make sure that i didnt damaged it. i always practice safe ESD rules and was wearing my bracelet. i was very careful when installing the new cooler and made sure it wasn't too tight of a fit, i have already done this before on my rig same mobo, cpu and cooler and had no problems with it. I am stuck in a corner and I am hoping to find some help out... Any suggestions? Please and Thank You in advance

i have tried that also, the main problem is that i cant get it past code 38 with an usb keyboard in it so that i can enter the bios. i can get it to cycle through and not hang, but that is without any keyboard or Hdd so im back at square one. i still need to try an PS/2 keyboard but finding one is actually harder than i thought it would be. this board hasn't have a bios update, it came with 1.6 already on it. its not even an month old yet. but thank you for an possible answer to this dilemma.

  • SATA cable - cause hard drive errors?

    Hi,
Apologies for yet another post...I've been inundating you with questions in the past week!
My iMac is in for repair, after having the flashing question mark appear and not being able to see the drive in disk utility. Tech Tools scan also showed about 30 errors on the surface scan of the drive. The repair place has just called and left a message that the problem was the SATA cable, and that they've fixed it with a new cable. My question is - would a faulty SATA cable cause errors on the drive? I'm guessing they haven't even checked that, they've just got the drive communicating again....I have very little faith in this place, I must admit.... but just thought I'd ask the question here..
    Thanks in advance.

If you already replaced the hard drive you should know where the cables are and where they go. One is the SATA power cable that goes directly to the power supply and the other is the SATA data cable that goes to the motherboard.
So disconnect the data cable from the HDD and from the motherboard and buy the same length cable at any PC shop or web site. SATA data cables are standard and nothing unique. Just remember where the motherboard connector is.
Freezes can be caused by lots of different things and I'd investigate those before replacing the data cable.
Have you run the diagnostics on the RAM, which is a frequent cause of freezes? Have you reseated the RAM modules in their slots? Do you have the latest drivers, eg video driver, for your hardware?
Are there any updates to your apps and software?
Do the freezes happen when you're running a specific app? Since this seems to happen on the Linux partition is something not fully compatible with Linux..?

    I have a MSI K8n Neo 2 Platinum mobo with a Athlon64 +3500 and 1gig dual channel DDR 400. I currently have 2 drives set up a IDE primary (MAxtor 6Y120) and a IDE slave (Maxtor 6L080).
    I recently purchased a Maxtor DiamondMax 10 6L300S0 300GB Serial ATA 7200RPM Hard Drive w/16MB Buffer.
It is my first SATA drive ever so non the less I am a newb. I want to use it as a non Raid media storage device while my primary IDE remains my boot OS drive.
I plugged the SATA in to the sata one port and powered it. I enabled the SATA in the bios with RAID disabled. When the system boots up it does the memory chech and lists all the IDE devices. Then it says "Detecting IDE drives..." and just hangs there. The new drive spins so it definatly has power but occasionaly it make occasional clicking sounds.
Once it actually booted up and windows detected it. I decided to reboot it just to play it safe but it never would get past post screen again. I can boot up the system normally when I unplug the SATA cable.
Please help I need to know if I am doing something wrong or I should RMA the drive. THANK YOU!

  • KM4M-V + SATA Drive, Hangs at Boot, Tried IDE Drive and During Setup, Powers Off

I bought 2 KM4M-V boards to upgrade my ailing 1880+ systems. Then realized I needed DDR as well so went back for that and also decided to update CPU's to Sempron 2600+. Also picked up Seagate 80Gb SATA and a 350 watt PSU (Alaska ATX 350 P4) which was recommened for this board by the dealer.
I am having so much trouble I am about to throw in the towel. Since I am 'upgrading' everything in the system except the CDRom drive I should have just started all over with 64-bit systems but now I am kind of stuck since it is over 30 days ago I got the MB's.
    Problem 1:
Using only the single SATA drive I never could get past the DMI Pool data line in Setup, it would just hang there. I read all about how to deal with SATA drives with this or similar boards here. SATA is enabled in BIOS but I can never get to the F6 load drivers step to try that. If I remove the SATA cable Setup will procede so it is something with the Seagate possibly? No jumpers needed and no preparation done to the drive. BIOS does not see the drive but the setup RAID utility does see it but says I cannot set up single drive as RAID of course, but it does report proper data about the drive. Never can get past Bios POST with SATA drive hooked up (channel 0 or 1)
Finally gave up on that and ran into Problem 2:
Put an older IDE drive in as only HD and XP Windows setup gets cranking along coping files then the system just dies. Like some pulled the plug suddenly. Happen every time. I checked for heat problems. Even ran through memory tests (SIMMTESTER), tried swapping cables, plugs and wall circuits. It dies every time no matter what.
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

DMI pool data? When changing mobo but keeping hard disk one should do a repair install of Windows and install the mobo drivers for the new mobo.
I originally wanted to keep the Windows install but decided to remove original C drive and save for eventual D drive use. A repair install warns you that your 'My Documents' folder 'may' be deleted and I didn't want to risk it as I have years and years of photos I didn't want to risk losing.

Addit: Seems something isn't right in the IDE configuration, or what Windows think is the config.
Bios is happy with WD drive as single master on one channel and CDRom as single master on the other (No jumper on Drive- osnavi). Windows install starts out just fine with my intention of creating a new partition but then it just BOOM, power off. My preference is to use the new SATA Baracuda as system drive and my old IDE C drive as D drive...

Im computer literate (enthusiast) but new to overclocking. I figured I would just do the genie untill i learned all the ins and outs of the complexity of overclocking properly, rather than just ramp the fsb and voltage without knowing what im doing lol. I had the same problem, and MSI advised me to update my BIOS to v1.8.  You might give that a try.  I flashed my BIOS to v1.8, but had other issues, so I reflashed it back to v1.7 before I tested the Genie Lite function.  Right now I'm running two 6950's in CF, and since everything is running smoothly without OC, I've decided to hold off on the OC Genie issues.

Thanks i better try that, although what other bugs did u get?
If you dont mind me asking what res and games are you playing that require dual cards? I always thought i needed cf or sli untill I built this thing, and im only on a gts450 but at 1920x1080 (23") I play crysis 2 demo max everything, Im just getting back into shooters, only other thing i have played is starcraft 2 and thats maxed too. I had the gts450 in my core2duo and thought i was lacking gpu for a while, guess it was really just the cpu that was weak, and that was only starcraft2 lol (e6400 no oc/2gb ram)

  • 890FXA-GD70 Will not POST

I recently purchased a new MSI 890FXA-GD70 motherboard from Newegg.com, along with a couple other upgrades. I put together my new computer consisting of this motherboard, a new AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE CPU, 8 GB of RAM, and an older nVidia 9800GTX+ GPU. The memory and video card have worked in previous machines. This PC will not boot. It will not even POST. The lights on the motherboard flash like mad, and the LED readout just flashes "FF." I RMA'd it to NewEgg, but was denied due to peeling the sticker off the back of the MOBO, so now I'll send it to MSI. I'm hoping for some good news.

  • 890FXA-GD70-Not Posting and Memory Issues

Purchased new 890FXA-GD70 board over the weekend and I am having problems after new build. Board will not post with 2 stick of Corsair DDR3 4GB PC1600 in slots 1 and 2. I removed one stick in slot 2 and board posted. I installed all drivers and Win 7 pro and added the second stick into slot 2 and will not post again. I moved the 2GB stick to slot 3 and the computer boots and seems to run fine. Should'nt DDR3 be run in slots 1 and 2?
    System
    CPU-AMD Phenom II x4 945
    Motherboard-890FXA-GD70
    Memory-Corsair DDR3 4GB 2 sticks at 2GB each PC1600 Dual
    Video Card-EVGA GTS250 512MB
Hard Drives-Western Digital Black Edition  500Gb
    OS-Windows 7 Professional
    Power Supply-Corsair 750

After checking the boards and google search, it appears that several other people are having the same issue. If the memory sticks are placed in dimm1 and dimm3 the board seems to post and runs fine. But that will not produce dual channel memory. Should I change memory to another brand? What is the best memory for this board. The computer has been running all day and seems to be stable but, just worried that memory is still incorrect and only have 10 days to return to Frys. I have also flashed the bios to 1.6! It appears that after reading several other post on this forum, they had to return the board, could I have a bad board?
