890FXA MB Problem

Hey all!
I just brought a new system build online, and was wondering if anybody here has had the same problem.
I can get any and all HDD's to recognize in the BIOS, but when I put a disc in the DVD drive, it says "Windows is loading files", then "Starting Windows",  then the screen goes blank. It stays that way, no other acknowledgments. I've tried checking the BIOS settings, all seems normal, tried multiple OS discs, no dice. I booted to Slim PE and a couple of other utility discs. They load, but none of them will load the optical drive. Fuinny that, because it BOOTED to it! I've also tried using different HDD's, although they all have old OS's on them. Same problem.  Tried loading Windows 7 Ultimate 64 and Windows Vista Ultimate. The current disc in system has the Vista loaded,  but because of the difference in components, it won't boot. I got it to go to safe mode once, but it wouldn't see the USB keyboard/mouse, so no go there. The alternate drive has XP on it.
Any help? Any takers? I can't help thinking maybe there's a BIOS setting I'm overlooking?
Thanks in advance for any and all help/advice!
Ned

Ned, do you have RAID mode in BIOS set to AHCI? If you do, change it to IDE. You can find RAID mode in Integrated Peripherals (I hope)...

  • 890FXA-GD70 problems with 4 stick of ram

I just built a new rig around the 890FXA-GD70 MB and everything is going great except I have major stability problems with 4 sticks of Ram installed.  I purchased 4 sticks of G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 from Newegg.  The PC will boot fine with all 4 sticks installed and Windows 7 recognizes them but I have a lot of application crashes.  No BSOD so far but very frequent app problems.  Even the windows event viewer keeps crashing while trying to troubleshoot.  I removed two of the sticks and everything has been rock solid.  Anyone else successfully running 4 sticks in this board or have any suggestions to stabilize? I'm not trying to overclock anything at the moment.
    thanks,

I had similar issues with BSOD.  I thought it might be my RAM.  I tried all kinds of different settings.  Tested it in another system.  It worked flawlessly and passed all memtests.  I took that RAM and the RAM from the other system (a DELL from work) home.  Tried the Dell RAM out and no post.  Tried one stick in DIMM2 and it worked stably and then tried two sticks and it worked stably.  I then tried my memory (ADATA).  I got one BSOD, but ran several memtests and burnin tests over the next 5 or 6 hours.  No more issues.  SWEET.  Reinstalled windows.  Ran great for 4 or 5 days and then got more BSOD.  I contacted MSI support and on two separate occasions they suggested I RMA the board.  I returned the board and got a different one.  I've been happy since (no issues whatsoever).  I even bought two more sticks of RAM.  I'm just saying - maybe it's not your RAM.  I can't say for certain that the 890FXA-GD70 was defective.  It may just need more BIOS updates.  Frustrating to say the least.  I feel your pain.

  • Multiple Problems with MSI 890FXA-GD65

I am having problems getting a clean build of new components to work.  The components are:
    motherboard is MSI 890FXA-GD65
processor is AMD Phenom II X2 565 Callisto
    memory is 2x 4Gb G.Skill Ripjaws X model F2-12800CL9D (CAS 9, Unbuffered DDR3 1600)
disk drive is a Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1 TB SATA III
card is an MSI N460GTX Cyclone 768D5/OC.
power supply is an Antec NEO ECO 620C 620W
    operating system is Windows 7
All items are brand new, and being assembled for the first time, so nothing is overclocked.
I have three problems.  First is that the video output is flaky.  I initially thought that the board wasn't POSTing, because I was getting no audible 'beeps' and there was no display output (does this board not have a speaker or speaker header?).  Through trial and error, I discovered that the board was POSTing, but I could not see anything because of a strange video problem:
If the monitor is connected when the video output changes, then the video will not work, and disconnecting/reconnecting will not fix it. For example. If the video cable is plugged in during a cold start, I will get no video output. If I wait a few seconds until the Bios loads, and then plug in the video, then I get a video signal. However, if I leave it plugged in as the video output switches when Windows starts up, then I lose video again. Only by plugging in and then unplugging during the same video output mode can I use the output.
I have tried 2 different video cards (same mdodel number) with the same result.  I have tried switching my memory with only 1 stick and with both sticks installed.  I don't have another processor to try.
The second problem is that Windows will not run with the USB controller turned on in BIOS.  It starts 'loading files' and then just hangs.
The third problem is that the MSI utility program will not run properly.  I tried to install the updated chipset drivers, but the installation hangs.
Thanks for any help!!  I am on the verge of returning the board to NewEgg after many hours of trying to troubleshoot this build.

Thanks for the reply.  I am using the DVI output on the video card connected to a VGA monitor with an DVI-VGA adapter.
No external USB connections have ever been installed.
I don't have any other DDR3 laying around.  Is there a recommended memory list on the MSI site?  I couldn't find one.

However its down to the CPU as memory controller is there.
You should use AMD tested memory sticks

  • Problem with 890fxa-gd70 and temps (what the heck is going on?)

    System Spec:
    Antec Nine-hundred
    890FXA-GD70 bios 1.6
AMD 6x 1055t @ 3.5ghz (but prob happened even at stock speeds)
    Corsair H50 - (push : shroud : radiator : pull ) 26c / 42c (maybe???)
    2x 4gb G.Skill Ripjaw DDR3 1600
2x Seagate Momentus XT in RAID0
    BFG GTX275oc
    Muskin 550w PSU
The digital temp readout on the mobo says one temp, and various monitoring programs say different temps (when they say anything at all...)
Is this a known bug?  I've had time when Core Temp said my cpu was running at 12c.  Do I have a defective temp sensor on the mobo, or CPU?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Glendor...

And the REALLY wierd part is that the problem just went away over the weekend...  Go Figure!
Didn't do anything, didn't change anything, just logged into the monitoring apps to write down some settings and noticed the Temps are registering, and show a remarkable similarity.  The only one that is still slightly wierd is the TMPIN2 that still shows a 63-65c reading.  Wish I knew what that was...

  • Msi 890fxa-gd70 posting problems

the problem started after i installed a new thermaltake frio cpu cooler, i installed it outside of the case on the box the motherboard came in. I get the splash screen but the keyboard wont respond and hangs at code 38 with a usb mouse and keyboard and one sata Hdd & dvd drive plugged in. if i remove the mouse and keyboard it goes to code 78 and hangs. if i remove the hdd & dvd drive it cycles through and tells me i have no boot device. i have tried different combinations and tryed moving the ram around, just 1 stick!. i have tried clearing the cmos throughout doing the different combinations. I have tried all the different sata ports for just the hdd, and i have tried all the different usb ports to try to get the keyboard to register, i did also try another known working usb keyboard. this motherboard has never been OC'ed this is a custom build computer for a friend so i only have limited time to keep messing around with combinations of hardware. the ram is tested and i also tried using one of my sticks from my rig with no luck. so here is the specs
    msi 890fxa-gd70 mobo - bios 1.6
AMD phen II 555 BE - no oc and no unlocked cores
    G. Skill rip jaws 1333 mhz cas 9
this rig was working perfect for 2 weeks before i tried to install the new HS, i already checked the pins on the cpu to make sure that i didnt damaged it. i always practice safe ESD rules and was wearing my bracelet. i was very careful when installing the new cooler and made sure it wasn't too tight of a fit, i have already done this before on my rig same mobo, cpu and cooler and had no problems with it. I am stuck in a corner and I am hoping to find some help out... Any suggestions? Please and Thank You in advance

i have tried that also, the main problem is that i cant get it past code 38 with an usb keyboard in it so that i can enter the bios. i can get it to cycle through and not hang, but that is without any keyboard or Hdd so im back at square one. i still need to try an PS/2 keyboard but finding one is actually harder than i thought it would be. this board hasn't have a bios update, it came with 1.6 already on it. its not even an month old yet. but thank you for an possible answer to this dilemma.

  • 890FXA-GD70 DDR3 problem.

    Greetins,
I just bought a new motherboard set, and I'm receiving already problems.
    My PC is:
    890FXA-GD70 + Phenom II X4 965 + G-Skill Ripjaws 1600MHz, CL 7-8-7-24(matches to the qualified vendor list).
So the problem is, that i cant set my memory settings to 1600MHz, Cl 7-8-7-24, Volts to 1.6V. My PC wont post anymore, and stays in bootloop.
Also motherboard stock settings are(for memory): 1333MHz, Cl 9-9-9-24.
I am only able to set DRAM multiplier to 1:4 when my DRAM are 1600MHz.
    Bios Version 1.6

Ok, so its better to buy DDR 1333MHz than 1600MHz cause of my CPU? Wich CPU:s support 1600MHz then?

    It doesn't really matter.
If you planning OC, the higher rated memory can be advantage.
Also normally higher rated memory can have better[lower] latency at lower speeds.

  • 890fxa-gd65 GTX 470 Stability problems

I have been reading with dismay that there are tons of problems with 400 series nvidia cards and i built my system for a video editing platform (adobe cs5.5).  One of the few certified cards for this software is the gtx 470 series so thats what i bought.  Here is my system build info:
    Windows 7 ultimate 64
    Cooler master 650w pwr supply
    Phenom II X6 1090T
    16 Gb Ram Corsair XMS3 4x4gb
    Crucial C300 SSD 128 Gb
Wd black edition 1tb and 2Tb drives
PNY XLR8 GTX 470 video card
Well, i have had nothing but issues with screen blanking locking freezing while NOT under load ie just sitting on the desktop or web browsing.  My temps are all fine, memtests fine, bios is latest for Mobo and firmwares are all latest for anything and everything i could update.  Reseated video card, processor, memory.  Apparently the 400 series cards have a known issue with working on some machines and not on others. Anyways, has anyone got an idea what i might do to get this card working on this machine.  BTW the card was tested on another mobo with no problems so i know the card is not defective per se.  Please help, i am pretty desperate to get this working.  I have read about special bioses and such provided by other manufacturers to ensure compatibilty with these cards but no mention of it here or anywhere for that matter regarding this mobo.  I am at a loss as to what to do.  I have started support messages with both msi and pny so i ma hoping i can get this resolved.

We can't help you with that videocard as it's not an MSI product.
Have you tried running with 1 memory stick or lowering the memory speed to 1333 or even 1066?
As for the videocard, many nVidia cards need a voltage a bit higher then standard to function properly.
But as your card is non MSI that is all we can say about it, it may not be the case.

  • 890FXA-GD65 - can a PSU with more Ampere on 3,3V and 5V solve my problem?

    Hello,
I have 2 problems with my system. First one is really common with this board along other users: USB, keyboard and graphic card stop working at randomly when graphic card is under load; sometimes everthing works fine, other times it happens twice a day. Everthing else is still on; to turn off the system I have to use the PSU`s on/off switch (because nothing else works)(happend about 20 times). My second problem is, that the whole system suddenly loses power (happened about 6 times).
I tried a lot and had a lot phonecalls with MSI-Suppurt-Center: and everthing leads me to the PSU (which I had changed, now Corsair 750HX, before NesteQ E2CS X-Strike XS-750), because it only provides 25A on 3,3V- and 5V-rail(?).
The Support-Center-Guy guessed, that I should use a PSU with at least 30A on 3,3V- and 28A on 5V-rail.
    Could this solve the problem?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
p.s. please excuse my english, don´t know all the right words

No fear, I and a few other members are experiencing the same issue! After about 5 calls or more to the support line, I was too told to change my graphics card and powersupply. I switched from the 6970 down to a gtx 560 and both caused the same problem with monitor and usb power shutting off after gaming. next was the power supply, I replaced my old kingwin with a new corsair powersupply of 800w, Again the problem showed up. I have also ran prime and videocard stress tests and have yet to replicate the problem with those.

  • MSI 890FXA-GD70 Crossfire Problems

hi, im new to crossfire and my cousin just gave me his old msi r4770 cyclone..
im wondering why i cant run both cards at full x16 bandwidth..
one is running at PCIE 2.0 @ x16 and another one at PCIE 1.1 @ x8
and why does the other one say PCIE 1.1 and not 2.0?..
i used PCIE_1 and PCIE_5 as the manual says..
    here are the screenshots:

glad i could help you get it working! that is a common problem with dust and dabris getting into the unused connectors on motherboards leading to connection problems between cards and motherboard!
in future if that ever happens again try the clean and reseat as that is the most common problem!

  • MSI 890FXA-GD70 starting problem

    Hello
I just got a new MSI 890FXA-GD70 and after all is plugged in and when i start the computer all the fans start but the bios doest show up. The strange thing is that most of the leds turn on (CPU Phase leds all light up and stay on, the DDR phase lights up and stay on) BUT, and this is the strangest part, the diagnostics display on the board doest even turn on. There is also no sound noises of any kind and I'm 99% sure i plug the speaker right.
I even started the board having no RAM and no HD to see if "anything" happened but always the same. Leds light up and stay on but nothing else. I'm using a CORSAIR AX1200 1200W for power. The CPU is an AMD Sempron 140.
This is also a good time to tell this is the first time i try to build a computer so any rookie mistakes i could have made, like something i forgot to plug, or any jumpers you can point and laugh
    Any ideas??
    Thank you

have you tried to boot with barabone setup and mainboard out of PC case?
there could be a shorting issue.
I have not! But it's going to be the first thing i will do as soon i get home. Like i said on top, i just find it odd the fact the leds light up and the diagnostics display doest turn on. If it's a shorting issue any chance i could have fried the board? Or that's is just some safety "thing"?

  • 890fxa-gd70 boot problem.

I have an odd error where i can't even seem to load the bios.  All the fan's spin up, but when i hit "any key" to go into the bios is stalls out moving between code 42-43-44 and back down.
If i skip trying to get into the bios it stalls out asking to load from disk to install the os.

  • 890FXA-GD70 Will Not Wake From S3 Sleep

890FXA-GD70 will not wake from S3 sleep; the power comes back on and the fans run but the video never returns and the system hard locks with a POST code of 22 or 24. Other than this issue the system is rock solid.
    Windows 7 Ultimate 64
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Processor
    Sapphire 5870 Graphics
    Crucial M4 SSD
    Corsair DDR3
    No overclock
I have reproduced the issue on two 890FXA-GD70s motherboards and I am convinced that this is not a result of a failed motherboard. I also was able to move my fully installed SSD hard drive, processor, memory and graphics card to an Asus 890FX board and successfully wake from S3 sleep proving that my OS and driver installation are working correctly.
I know how to properly set the BIOS as I have installed many 890GXM-G65 motherboards for S3 sleep without issue. The problem seems unique to the 890FXA-GD70.
Is there a fix for this?

I have identified the cause. The "Extra RAID/IDE Controller" must be "Enabled" to use S3; otherwise the system will hang on the wake event. This is true even if the "Extra RAID/IDE Controller" goes unused. The "Extra RAID/IDE Controller" must be set to "Enabled" for S3 sleep to wake.
This would seem to me to be a bug since none of the other MSI boards I have used require the optional IDE controller to be enabled in order for S3 to function properly.

  • MSI 890FXA-GD70 w/ 2xIntel 510 120GB in RAID 0 on Locks up and BSOD

I am getting hard lockups and BSOD from the following
    OS: Win7x64
MB: MSI 890FXA-GD70 w/ latest BIOS
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1100T
    HD: 2xIntel SSD 520 120GB SSD RAID 0

    RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1600 F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL
I have swapped power supplies. I have swapped identical RAM. I have swapped video cards. I have used Ultimate Boot CD to run Memtest and other stress tests and everything passes with flying colors. BIOS is loaded with defaults fail safe. RAID array is created using all defaults for a RAID 0. Everything points to SSD firmware or other issues. Maybe RAID 0 with 2 Intel 510's using a AMD SB850 is not supported? Firmware versions on the 510's are both PPG4 which is the latest. Am I doing something wrong? Anyone have any ideas? I am very disappointed that that I can not get my RAID 0 stable. BTW I am doing no overclocking etc. Hardware and errors follow. Thanks!

Thanks for the help! It is appreciated. Power supply is Antec 380W. I have tried swapping out with identical one - both were brand new and I have had pretty good luck with Antec in the past so I kind of doubt that's it. Wish it was so easy! The machine is on a good line interactive UPS as well so power fluctuations are not causing this.
I am using the hardware RAID on the SB850 - it requires loading the latest driver from USB during installation. But prior to that it requires a Ctrl-F and into the RAID setup. I choose RAID 0 and then select both Intel 510 120GB SATA III. The two SSD have the exact same firmware which is the latest per Intel Website.
Drivers are the latest for Win7x64 from here:

This problem is posted in two other spots - Intel Forums and Windows Seven Forums
    http://communities.intel.com/thread/28220?tstart=0
    http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-debugging/218850-bsod-msi-890fxa-gd70-w-2xintel-ssd-520-120gb-ssd-raid-0-a.html
No one has been able to solve it yet. Seems like MSI and Intel are both good companies but these products are not compatible in the configuration I am attempting.

  • Booting BIOS from USB doesn't work (890FXA-GD70)

    Hi all,
in case of BIOS crash, recent MSI motherboards should be able to boot using a BIOS provided from an USB pendrive. I have tested this function by calling it directly by BIOS option, but it fails after BIOS is loaded getting a blank screen (debug code: 09) or the monitor off (debug code: 31). Does any of you know whether the problem is fixable or any hints? Is it working to you?
    890FXA-GD70 (either BIOS 1.0 and 1.6)
Verbarim Store'n' go 4GB USB pendrive (tested with FAT32, FAT16 formats, partitions smaller, bigger... nothing)
BIOS save function doesn't work as well. Some bytes are different comparing the saved file to original one.

it's probably m-flash issue, what's current bios version installed?
Yes, you can say: "Flash your BIOS to the last version released some days ago, and retry", but that is the last chance for clear reasons. The problem hasn't been fixed flashing from 1.0 to 1.6, and I guess likely this code with the bug is in non flashable part of BIOS.
I wonder whether Boot 2nd BIOS from USB Drive (or Backup BIOS to USB Drive) is working for someone, it looks impossible it is entirely broken...
