890GMX-G65 problems

ok. I've had this board in my HTPC for about a year now. I had problems with it right when I got it, and due to $$$ issues, didn't bother with it. Today I just received my new Corsair HX650 PSU, so I get everything plugged in, and I have the same problem.
Here's a description of what my situation is that I posted on another forum
Quote
Ok, first some back story. (this problem occured on my HTPC, all specs are in my sig)
I was trying to get my 1090t to 4GHz, was stress testing with OCCT and it just shut off. no blue screen or anything. Tried powering back up, and nothing, not a power light on the mobo or anything. let everything sit overnight, tried the next day and still nothing.
I figured I fried my mobo, sent it to MSI, they said the BIOS was corrupted, they fixed it and sent it back to me. I installed it and it booted right up.
Fast forward to last night.
So I have it up and running, i bumped the multiplier by one to 17, for a total speed of 3.4Ghz (stock 3.2) so there shouldn't be anything wrong with this.
So start up folding around 3 or 4pm and am happy I have my htpc back. Well about 10 hours later, a hear a slight pop, or click & i look over and the power LED is blinking and there is a STRONG smell of burning electronics. This is basically the exact thing that happened originally, just originally it didn't smell this badly of burnt electronics. I would've bet money that it was the PSU as that seemed to be where the smell was coming from the strongest
So i did the same thing, tried powering back up, nothing. No lights on mobo, no power LED, no anything.
Fast forward to now... Took the PSU out and did the paper clip test, sure enough the fan spins up, albeit with a slight clicking noise while spinning. Ok, so I hooked up the 24pin & 4pin to my mobo, tried powering on, and I got one LED light on my mobo to light up, and then back to off, none of my case fans spun up, and I cant' get it to do that again.
Any idea what's wrong?
Now that I have my new PSU, when I try turning the PC on, all that happens is that "LED1" blinks once (the LED near the CPU socket) and that's it.
edit: thankfully this didn't happen: http://www.overclock.net/amd-motherboards/870497-my-computer-burst-into-flames-msi.html

RMA the board.

    Hey,
Last night I put my PC in to hibernate and went to sleep like normal. and this morning I went to turn on my PC.
    and the monitor gets nothing.
My Mouse lights up. All my fans turn on.
But there is nothing going to my monitor. my 260GTX's nor on board gfx are having any output.
Ive tried everything listed.  Moving ram around. moving the JBAT1 jumper took out the battery.  Pressing DEL and later F1 during start up.
    Nothing works.
    Please help me :(
only 2/4 of the LEDs on the mobo light up.
At first 2 come on and 3rd flickers then it restarts. does this again. restarts. and final it just leaves 2 on.

  • NF980-G65 problem Cannot installl GPU

This is my 3rd build of a PC, and I have yet to have this problem before.
Here are all the parts I have installed.
    MoBo- MSI NF980-G65
CPU- AMD Phenom II X4 955 black edition
    RAM - OCZ 2GB DDR3 (x4)
    PSU - SilverStone Decathalon 1000W
VGA - (Onboard) and EVGA GeForce 9800GX2
    I also have 2 hard drives (1)500GB, and (1)1TB
    and 2 DVD-RW drives
Anyways. the build went well initially. I installed everything, and the temps were good on the CPU. (mid 20C range) And then I installed the RAM 1 card at a time. All that went well also. Then I tried to install the Graphics card. This is where thinsg went weird. The board stopped posting. It will power up to the 3rd phase (according to the blue LEDs on the top of the board), and then stop there. I get no intro graphic, and pressing F1, F11, or Delete seem to have no effect. I have rechecked the connections of every wire, and they all check out. The RAM had a memtest run on it between each install, and they all came out fine. I even went back, and checked on the Graphics card, by putting it into another system. No problems there. I even took a chance, and pulled the processor, and checked the pins, which were all perfectly straight. I am at my wits end. PLEASE HELP.

I just got my MSI 980-G65 Mobo today & started reading the manual.
How many Graphics cards are you running? 1 or 2?  The book states that if your going to use only one PCIE slot, make sure the GPU is installed in PCIE-2 = Slot #2. You may also want to see it there is a Bios setting for this Slot to boot first. The Book also states that if you are going to use 2 GPU's in SLI mode to be sure to disable Multi GPU in the Bios & make sure to disable Hybrid SLI as well, unless you want Hybrid SLI with only one GPU in PCIE-slot 2 & your running Vista only. Vista is the only OS that supports Hybrid SLI. When you use it, it combines the the video output of the GPU in PCIE2 to the Onboard GPU & you must hook up to one of those ports. Your GPU in PCIE2 will not output video in this mode, you must hook up to the onboard. I haven't read anything about Hybrid support in Windows 7. I was surprized to see how the config of this mobo wants you to set up Duel channel memory. Either 2 or 4 sticks. But with reading more stuff here, & other Tech sites, using 4 sticks in duel channel may slow you down & force you to stay with 2T timings. Using only 2 sticks is best for performance & you may find you can run the ram with 1T timings.  I'll be building with this mobo soon.

  • NF980-G65 Problem

Last night when I got home from work I went to turn my desktop on and hear a loud pop the desktop powered off and there was a very strong ozone type smell.  I unplugged all the cables and opened up the case to see if I could find the source of the problem with no luck..
The PSU jump starts fine and when I hook up the PSU tester all of the rails check out.
All equipment seems to power fine when plugged seperately to the power supply, HDD, DVD burner, etc.
After disconnecting and removing everything from the motherboard to test with just PSU, CPU, and memory PSU cycles up briefly then cuts out, both in and out of case.
On visual inspection there are no scorch marks, or bulging canisters.
When trying to power cycle the mother board the first 3 diagnostic LEDs light up right away the fourth lights for a split second there is a light "static" noise like sparking or arcing but there is no visual electrical arc with all lights off in pitch black room, either in or out of case.
I have also tried all of the above with an identical PSU from a friends system with the same results.
I am at a loss as to what else to test, I am pretty confident it is the motherboard just a little lost as to what in particular since i am unable to locate any arcing or evidence of a blown capacitor.
    Ay suggestions would be appreciated.

When you pull the board out, get a magnifying glass and good flash light. If there was arcing you will be able to see discoloration. Burn burns. to smell it away from the computer and hear, it sounds serious, check for ground contact anywhere you can, if its the case, or the case in point, you may have problems with a RMA board too. Like something sharp cutting through the laquer of mobo and making contact to ground. My 2 cents anyway

  • New builder with a problem-MSI FM2-A85XA-G65-Corsair400R Case

I am a first time builder and I am having a bit of a problem with the front panel connections. My mother board came with adapters for the JFP1 and JFP2 on the MOBO so I can connect to the adapters and then to the motherboard.
My motherboard manual said most of the front panel connectors would connect to JFP1.
    Connected to the JFP1
    HDDLED
    Power Switch
    Reset Switch
The adapter has left 2 pins FP PWR/SLP
I have left 2 single wires +PLED and a -PLED
    The JFP2 has a S LED and a PLED
I am a bit lost here these are the last of the wires I need to connect and it doesn't seem very intuitive to me at all. I might have to post pictures because my motherboard manual is confusing me on this one.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    MSI FM2-A85XA-G65 is the motherboard.

    Quote from: NewGuy2 on 08-May-13, 10:51:15
Thanks for the help.  Why wouldn't the m connector have it labeled PLED?  They label it FP PWR/SLP.  The manual clearly shows pins 2 and 4 I got that.  The labeling on the m connector through me off.
I see that now going thru a bag I have with some of those M-connectors. Those are the 2 pins to use for the PLED. If the LED doesn't light up connected one way on those pins then simply reverse the 2 wires and then it will light up when power is on. If you connect them the wrong way 1st time around and it doesn't light up it won't damage anything by the way.

I've m-audio firewire 410 sound card and cubase5 (has a usb dongle to work)
before this mainboard I was using K9A2 platinium V2 and Amd 9950  cpu everything was working perfectly
now I've upgraded my board (as you see) and bought a AMD 955
now when I install the sound card driver it's making somekind of digital distortion and also the sound is moving to faster or slower (all the time) so I'M hearing funny voices
The Cubase5 Usb dongle is having some connection problem. It force me to change the usb port everytime I start cubase
I've updated my bios but guess what.... They're still with me.
    Please some help

Are the energy settings properly configured for USB and the CPU?
Could be Cubase doesn't like Cool & Quite?
    Can Cubase work with quad-core?
    Can the powersupply handle everything?
What is in your system, we don't know much: >>Posting Guide<<
    Read the guide this time.
    My system is
    MSI 790GX G65 , AMD 955 BE, Corsair 1600 MHZ 4 GB (TW3X4G1600C9D) , 6 HDD (one is IDE),  ZOTAX 9800 GTX+, 750 watt PSU(corsair TX750W)
I've some pci card for my music buss. but i didn't install them yet. Not before everything works fine
Cubase works fine with quad core , my ex-system was a quad core.
the problem with cubase comes this way. I turn on the pc (dongle is on all the time) start cubase and get the message "Connection problem with dongle change the usb port) after I change it everthing works fine. infact I'm not making cubase problem a big deal. my real problem is firewire.
About the energy settings, I didn't change anything on mainboard, why do I need to change the power settings for usb? aren't they standart?

  • MSI Z87 G65 Killer E2200 Ethernet Problems

I'm currently having a lot of trouble with the Killer Ethernet system while trying to set up my internet. I built my computer with an MSI Z87 G65 motherboard that has "Killer Embeded Ethernet E2200" and downloaded the drivers for it. I also have a Rosewill WiFi adapter in order to pick up wireless internet.
Now my problem is this: My computer will always pick up a wireless connection, but the wired connection will only work once I install the drivers. After any type of reset or reboot, the computer doesn't pick up the wireless connection anymore. Here's the situation in a nutshell:
All the drivers have been updated to the current version for Windows 8
The connection HAS worked in the past, but simultaneously seems to just not show itself
The Wired connection WON'T be shown in the Network and Sharing Options of Windows if the computer doesn't recognize it being plugged in (when it really is)
Disabling Wireless settings DOES NOT show the wireless connection (I've been able to connect to both Wired and Wireless before)
The Wired connection seemed to be working for a few days until a Windows 8 update seemed to raise the problem again.
And that's about it. Uninstalling and Reinstalling the drivers has worked in the past, but then there comes a time where Windows just "decides" that it doesn't want to recognize the connection anymore. I'm wondering if there is a more permanent fix or a way that I can see the wired connection in another way to connect directly to it. Thanks for your help!

Killer network is 'killed' under windows 8, otherwise, borked!
There are a few threads about it, mine being here:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=172930.0
Gave up, and going to pick up a cheap network card today, one that will just work.
I actually read through that same thread when I was still searching for answers. It's a shame that we have to resort to getting a new network card.  That's a huge disappointment. I'm going to try and go to Killer's chat support and figure it out this morning, but I probably will end up doing the same.  Thanks for your reply!

  • 790FX-G65 optical drive problem

Hi all I just picked up the 790fx-g65 board with amd720black chip. My system is running on windows XP professional 32bit. My problem is my pioneer 111D CD/DVD IDE connected drive will only play CD files. I loaded all the drivers from MSI live update and BIOS flash to 1.3, everything on that end is up to date from their site. I've tried another IDE connected optical drive and have the same issue.
    thanks for the help

Also on the diagnostic lights on the MO I get the first 3 lit, 4th intermittent, and 5th nothing.
Thats normal (if it is the similar 5 LED's as on 790GX, -just above the ram-slot?) You will for example see the 5th light-up during Vista Experience Index running
    Quote
One other thing I tried was a copy of windows 7 on a DVD that would not read when I tried a fresh install. I think its something between the MO and optical drive, is there anything in the BIOS to look for?
Do see any "yellow question mark" regarding the optical drive, in the Device Manager? Any how, there is a fix dealing with CD/DVD ROM issue at the official Window Fix It web site.
Click "delete lower & upper filters for CD devices" and follow link to the next microsoft site, there you just can click "Solve this problem" dialog box. Has helpt lot of people, worth trying

P.S. Link does not work prorpely, you have to copy & past the term delete lower & upper filters into search/upper right corner

    Hello!
Please mention your PSU and memory, too.
Which processor is yours in this list?
    http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=prodcpu2&prod_no=1739&maincat_no=1
Don't use Live Update. If you must use it, arrange so you let it find a downloaded and extracted file when in SafeMode. - To minimise disturbance: "During updating, please stop all working process to avoid update interruption." To do that you need to download the correct BIOS version first, manually. http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=searchresult&keywords=790GX-G65
Can't say what the third problem is, but I'm leaning towards a Router problem or that you somehow have a competing network.

First off, I am not a computer tech or know-it-all. 320 GB WD 7200 RPM HD & 1TB WD 7200 HD.
My computer didn't have any problems until yesterday when I left my computer on all day (was a really hot day) and I came home and turned on World of warcraft in windowed mode and tried to play a movie (I always play with a video running) and the video wouldn't display and crashed each time I tried. I could run either the game or the movie but not both. So I checked the temperature and it showed MCP at 95 C. I turned it off for a while, and it went back to normal.
I looked at many different posts and one suggested I try reapplying the thermal compound on my CPU chip which I did with Arctic silver 5 and it's helped my CPU temp a bit but not my MCP temp.
Then I read from other posts that MCP is a different chip but I have no idea where it is. Is it the square silver (one with "MSI" written on it) next to the 2nd PCI-E slot? http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1885
I would figure it would be that one since it's covered by the 2nd video card then it would make sense for the high temp.
If it is. would putting it down to the 3rd slot fix the problem? I'm not sure if the SLI cable would even reach from 1st to 3rd slot if I had to do that. And not sure if leaving the 2nd PCI-E slot open would be alright. I know I'm sounding like a noob; but I really am so please bare with these questions.
If that is not the MCP chip can any1 tell me where it is specifically on that board and how I should go about fixing the temp problem.
I have 2x120mm Rear exhaust fans, 240 top exhaust, 3x120 front exhaust fans, and even installed a 120mm Side panel intake fan which I figured would blow right on the MCP chip since people said it was in the southern area, but it has not helped.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

3 x 2GB sounds like a memory kit meant for an Intel system. In the old days non-optimal memory configurations made chipset temp. sky-rocket. But that shouldn't be it nowadays, should it.
At least try with a single stick.
Next comes air-flow. Like Henry says, 'in from the front and out the back or top'. If for example a big processor heatsink blocks the way, parts of the motherboard and the memory will be in a poor air-flow pocket. That is partly your problem I believe, possibly alongside an exhaust fan that is not up to the job.
The chipset has a separate heat sink. If you intend to reseat that heat-sink, you will have to take the motherboard out, and un-fasten it from the back-side. Use tiny pliers if your fingers are too weak.

  • MSI 890GXM-G65 Overclocking Problems

    I have:
    MSI 890GXM-G65 motherboard
4 GB OCZ PC3-16000 Platinum Edition memory (OCZ3P20004GK) runs at 1.95v and 2000 MHZ at 9-9-9-30
Sapphire 5870 1 GB video Card
AMD 955 Processor (Black Edition that runs at 3.2 GHZ)
Without anything else overclocked I cant even raise my front side bus to 204 without it not posting at 16 multiplier.  203 post fine.  I upgraded Bios to 1.B.
I have several other questions, but this is the first concern I have and that I would I like to address.  Hope my motherboard is not not "broken".  This is mainly just a thread starter and will get into more overclocking questions/problems later one...after addressing this issue.

    Here are my screenshots:
Im sorry but I made a mistake.  Before I use the Control Center my Ram speed is around 1666 instead of 1706.  I get 1706 after I up the Front Side Bus in Control Center to 256.  Hope this didnt confuse any.
As far as the Hyper Transport speeds.  I am getting as you can see in the mid 2500's.  The Box and website show 2600.  So is this a misprint because you would think that 2600 would be out of the box instead of an overclock?
My 12 volt rail is 70 amp.  I am using the 850 watt Kingwin MK Power Power Supply.
And again another question that really hasnt been answered yet.  If I can overclock on the software side of things (Control Center) should't I be able to overclock on the hardware side as in bios.  For example I am getting 250 FSB on Bios, but I can only get up to 256 in Control Center.  You would think that if it works in Control Center is should work in Bios.  And this is a very Stable FSB too (after testing with 3dMark etc.)

  • MSI Z87-G65 Gaming BIOS causing RAM problem?

    Hey
I updated my bios something like week ago from 1.7 to 1.8 and seems like it is causing ram to behave oddly. I installed the BIOS via live update 5 and flashed the computer via USB. Seems like the ram usage climbs to 100% at span of few hours, usually something like 2-4h. Also my SSD usage also is very high at the same time, around 50-100% changing rapidly. Haven't had the problem at earlier bios versions. Also task manager won't show any specific process that is using all that RAM/disc. Kinda annoying that can't use computer longer that that because it gets so laggy :(. I'll include some screenshots from task manager.
    Thank you!

After the flash, was a PSU power cord removed, battery removed CMOS clear performed? Also, was the ME driver re-installed with the latest available? If none of that helps, then I would suggest to contact MSI Technical about the problems encountered with the new UEFI/BIOS revision. A reflash can be accomplished as well back to a version that was working. There is no real need to keep updating a UEFI/BIOS if all works without any problems with the exception of a specific improvement of a particular function that may have been less than optimal.
No I didn't, I'll try it that way and check out if it works. Tough ME driver is a latest but I didn't re-install it.
    Thanks for response!
