890GXM-G65 eSata Performance

I am testing a SSD (A-Data, SandForce Controller, > 260Mbytes/s read/write).  I am using the e-sata connection with a dock.  I am only getting 120Mbytes/s and wondering why.  Any suggestions?  Do I need to install the latest AMD drivers for the SB850.  I looked at AMD's website and MSI but I am a little confused on how to install SATA controller divers.  I am using an internal OCZ Vertex (Indilinx Controller) and getting over 200Mbytes easily.  Any suggestions?

Sorry, but AMD will probably not release that cpu for normal sale.

http://www.neoseeker.com/news/13858-amd-phenom-x4-960t-retail-launch-cancelled/
They are too concerned that every one wants one to unlock it, so for now its a no no for normal sale to you and me, unless you might get lucky and get your hands on it through other channels.
Its only selling them to OEM's and they are to have boards that dont have unlock capabilities for the cpu.
And there is this:
Quote
At the end of the day, this is a less reliable mechanism for generating additional performance  than traditional overclocking. It’s very hit and miss, and the gains only apply to threaded applications and workloads. I'll admit that finding a chip that unlocks feels a lot like buying a Lottery Scratcher and winning twenty bucks. Just be ready to lose more times than you win.
from here:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/phenom-ii-x4-960t-zosma-core-unlocking,2627.html
So your your chances are way better when buying a real sixcore.
No offense but if you want a working hexacore, buy one, the cores are mostly locked for a reason and in 90% of the time you'll run into all kind of problems and glitches.
Besides they are not as expensive as an Intel hexacore, they are way cheaper, so safe some more, before jumping on the "unlocking" wagon and find out that its flawed (if you can get one that is).

  • 890GXM-G65 - How to install SB850 drivers in Win7

I purchased the 890GXM-G65 mobo.  I want to install the sata controller (southbridge chipset) drivers from AMD.  I basically want to get maximum performance from my sata controller.  I tried AMD drivers but had problems with installation.  Also, do I need the drivers and application.  Is better to use the default windows based AHCI driver or the AMD AHCI driver?  Thanks

I downloaded the AMD drivers: catalyst, ahci and SB.  The SB drivers installation work halfway, and then they crash.  I get a driver fail on installation.  Not sure why.  The sata controller device is correct AMD SATA Controller.  I guess I need to see detailed instructions to make sure that I am doing this correct.  Maybe safe mode.  Any suggestions?!  Thanks in advance.

  • 890GXM-G65 Ram issues

Hey guys, I know there are a lot of ram posts here already and many more on the web but I have spent the last 3 days reading them and trying to follow their guides and nothing has worked for me so I want to see if there is anyone that can help me for my specific problem....
Ok I built a new system with the 890GXM-G65 mobo and an AMD Phenom II X6 1055T processor. I am also installing a pair of G.Skill F3-12800CL7D-4GBRM memory sticks (I know these are designed for the Intel's but read many people using them for the AMD after changing the timings and loving the performance), I pulled my old 1TB hard drive out my other system to use in this one which already has Windows XP Pro installed.
My problem is that the pc reboots after the windows loading screen. I have tried changing the timings in the "Advanced DRAM Configuation" in the CMOS (7-7-7-24, 7-8-7-24, 8-8-8-24, 9-9-9-24) and not had any improvements, I have tried using the OC Genie Lite to auto find the correct settings, I have changed DRAM voltages (1.5-1.65) and NB Voltage (1.3-1.35) I also have changed the FSB/DRAM Ratio from 1:3.33 to 1:4 to change from 1333 to 1600 with no change as well.
I am able to log into Windows safe mode, in fact at first I thought it was a driver issue and loaded all the drivers in safe mode already.
Another issue I see and dont understand is in the "Memory-Z" in the CMOS I never see any of the memory settings change even though I set them in the Advance config, is this supposed to change?
Any help would be much appreciated, I am pretty sure its a memory issue from what I have seen on the web, I bought the memory from newegg.com and have a short time left that I could probably swap them out for something different if that is what I have to do, but I would really like to make these work.
    Thanks guys.

Download and install memtest86+ on a usb drive and boot from that. Do a 24hr memory test to tell you if the ram+cpu is good or not.
After that if you don't want to mess with your original drive, install XP on a spare drive and see if it's stable.
I'm using G.Skill Ripjaws with my 1055t and it's been stable so far.

My other mainboard which my hard drive is from is a MSI 975X Platinum. A rep from G. Skill told me to test each memory individually and if I still have problems to replace the memory. Should I just swap them out or should I change brands? OCZ is the only company that is tested on the MSI site, should I just grab some of those?

  • 890GXM-G65 working with 1,6v RAM - Is that ok?

Hello, folks. I built my first rig last year, with the 890GXM-G65, and I am considering a few updates, which made me realize that I made a mistake  . Now that I am more aware of things in a rig, I saw that my mainboard requires 1,5v RAM, but I have 2 x 2GB Corsair DDR3 1.333MHz TW3X4G1333C9 G (1,6v). I read somewhere that using memory with voltage higher than the mainboard can compromise or even burn the processor. Is that right? Is the 1,6v RAM putting my processor or the mainboard at risk?
I will replace the RAM for 4 x 4GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 CMZ16GX3M4A1600C9 (1,5v), but I don’t know if I can wait a little bit or if I should replace the RAM as soon as possible. All in all, my computer is working fine since day one, but I don't know if the mistake with the RAM is lowering its performance. Or maybe I was expecting too much of my Phenon II 1090T
    Here is my rig:
    - Windows XP (Win7 is driving me nuts)
    - 890GXM-G65 (no OC whatsoever)
    - 2 x 2GB Corsair DDR3 1.333MHz TW3X4G1333C9 G
    - Phenom II 1090T
    - Sapphire HD 6870
    - HD (OS) Seagate Barracuda 320GB
    I appreciate any comments,

I your Bios, if you look in the Cell Menu, there are available adjustments for memory. You can run 'Auto' or set specs to match your Memory specs, or Overclock. Although the manual States 1.5v, it is the Auto basics and can support 1.5v sticks. I looked at MSI under 'Test Report' and your current Corsair memory is on the tested list, as OK to use. If you memory specs ask for a different voltage value, you can manually set the voltage in your Bios under DRAM Voltage(V). Never adjust into the RED values. Setting to the suggested voltages for your sticks is proper, any other choice is Overclocking, or Underclocking. You can also set the timing and 1T/2T. Again this information is available at Corsair for your memory sticks. Do not think that MSI tested and qualified memory sticks are to be set at 1.5v, if the sticks call for a different voltage. At Corsair it shows TW3X4G1333C9G stick as 1.5v (you say 1.6v) and timing of 9-9-9-24. Double check at corsair to verify the values. That said if they are infact 1.6v memory sticks, then set the DRAM voltage to 1.6v. I do not see the Corsair Vengeance DDR3 CMZ16GX3M4A1600C9 sticks at MSI test list as tested. That doesn't mean you can't use them.. just not on the tested list. You can verify that at Corsair.
    Good Luck

  • 890GXM-G65 BIOS update failure

I just assembled a PC with the 890GXM-G65 motherboard, 4 GB Kingston DDR3-1333 memory (2x KVR1333D3N9/2G), Athlon II X2 245 processor, Nvidia 8500GT video card. BIOS revision was 1.6. Although I intended to do a clean Windows 7 x64 install later, initially and with only minor adjustments I was able to successfully boot from my HDD transplanted from my old PC with Windows 7 x86.
I decided to update to BIOS 1.7 because I built this system in an emergency and on a tight budget, hence the Athlon II X2 and the reused old video card and HDD, but I intend to upgrade to a Phenom II X6 and a better card soon, and I remembered having seen the information on MSI's Web site, on the processor compatibility list, that revision 1.7 was required to support hexa-core processors. Later I found that the information on that page had been corrected to a mere version 1.2, but by then it was too late.
I downloaded the ZIP file with the BIOS 1.7 update (7642v17.zip) from MSI's Web site and extracted it. I tried to run the executable (AFUD4310.EXE) from within a Windows 7 command prompt, but I saw a message that the program could not run in that OS. I tried to perform LiveUpdate from MSI's site, but apparently it wasn't compatible either (Windows 7 and IE 8), because nothing happened and it kept returning to the same screen, even though I had enabled all ActiveX options for MSI's site. Then I saved the BIOS binary (A7642AMS.170) to a FAT-formatted USB stick and tried M-Flash from BIOS.
The BIOS recognized the file but said there was a "ROM dismatch" (sic). I canceled it, rebooted, re-downloaded the file, calculated the MD5 hash for the BIOS binary both on my HDD and on the USB stick and they matched, which rules out any problem with the file copy process or the USB stick hardware. I repeated the M-Flash process and since I had double-checked that the ROM file was correct, I saved my old BIOS to the same USB stick and let the flashing proceed.
The BIOS flash process went normally through the end ("Erasing ROM," "Writing ROM," etc.), with the message that the PC would reboot after 5 seconds. Which, of course, it didn't. Other than the blue LEDs and the processor fan spinning, nothing happens. Not even the GPU fan spins, and the same video card still works perfectly in my old PC, which of course I had to re-assemble - I'm writing from it now and using the same video card. I tried everything, in desperation including resetting the BIOS jumpers and removing the battery, even though I knew that's for misconfigured BIOS parameters, not for a corrupted BIOS.
Now, you don't have to tell me that a BIOS upgrade is risky. I know it, and only did it because I thought I had a good reason - to make my new PC ready for the upgrade I intend to do soon. But first, I wouldn't have done it without the incorrect information that was on MSI's Web site. Second, one expects a BIOS update to go without problems if you have the correct binary ROM file from the motherboard's manufacturer and there are no power outages or other problems that interrupt the process. Both these requisites were met. Yet now my brand-new mobo (which I stressed my limited budget to get exactly because of the X6 support and new 890GX chipset) appears to be dead.
Do I have just an expensive paperweight and a considerable loss in my bank account, or is there still hope? Can anything still be done to save my motherboard? Thanks a lot for any possible help.

so there are all lies or what ?
No, that is called marketing.  In most cases, there are no problems with M-Flash whatsoever.  However, in too many other instances there have been problems with M-Flash, that is why we warn against using it, to be on the safe side.  You can either ignore these warnings and take your chances (probably 95% success rate) or take them seriously and update the BIOS the DOS-Way and increase the success rate to 99.9999%.  It is up to you.  In case the only reason you posted your remark is to start the sort of discussion we already had hundred times in this forum, please either start your own topic and state your actual problem or just don't reply to my reply.  This is a user-to-user forum, not an MSI Technical Support or an official MSI Products complaint stations. • 890GXM-G65 front panel - AC' 97 or HD audio?

Hello, folks. I bought an 890GXM-G65 and I am having a doubt regarding the installation. The audio connector from the front panel splits in two. One connector reads “AC’ 97” and the other “HD Audio”. My motherboard manual says nothing about which one should I use to plug into the JAUD1.
I have been researching and looks like AC’ 97 is from AMD boards and HD audio is from Intel boards. Is that correct? Should then I use the connector AC’ 97?

  • 890GXM-G65

    Good day everyone.
I'm looking for a place to buy a single 890GXM-G65 from that ships to the Netherlands. I have looked around but can't find anything.
    Hans

If you are still looking for one, cybertronpc is the only place I could find one retail, although pricey.  It works great though, and 3 year warranty if retail.  No warranty if bought used or on ebay or something like that.  I had ordered at 3 other places only for them to get canceled, despite them saying they were in stock.  I just bought it a little over a month ago and they only had about 10 left then.  Could be out.
    http://www.cybertronpc.com/Itemdesc~ic~MBD-MSI-890GXMA~Group~BUSINESS~Cat~COMPONENTS.htm
Not sure if MSI will support the board though, only AM3+ compatable board that didnt get a bios update for Vishera, although Vishera CPUs work.  My FX-6300 wont run any faster than 1600 RAM in dual channel.  It only supports up to 1866 in single channel and doesnt like any overclock of the FSB or RAM.   I have tight timings at 1600 though, CL7.
Perhaps a bios update would make it more overclocking friendly, as even though it allows 2400mhz NB frequnecy, windows wont show 2400mhz, 2000mhz no matter what I change in the bios.  Maybe something else that needs the bios update for.

  • 890GXM-G65 alarm

Can someone tell me what the high-pitched alarm noise is the 890GXM-G65?
It's coming on in a new game I'm trying to play, but doesn't seem to be temperature related (core temp hasn't exceed 41 degrees, according to AMD OverDrive & SpeedFan) and motherboard temperature seems quite low too.  What is the alarm for?

Quote from: Tenoq on 17-October-10, 18:42:42
Appears to be the motherboard.  Do they have an audible alarm?  The alarm is just a constant high-pitched whine and has only started happening under severe load.  I did hear it briefly once before running LinX... but not since.
It's definitely not VGA.  VGA temp is very low thanks to an aftermarket cooler.
    Quote
It's definitely not VGA.  VGA temp is very low thanks to an aftermarket cooler.
Temp doesn't matter, as said before: either test with another VGA or with another PSU.
This noise typically comes from standard choke:
This kind of conventional choke has one major disadvantage: high-frequency-noise. When the GPU needs a lot of electricity, the coil and metal stick will be under full loading so that the generated magnetic force will cause mutual interference resulting in vibration. The vibration speed is extremely high and therefore causes high-frequency noise. The noise level depends on the loading and can vary from for humans inaudible 10 dB to unbearable 30 dB.
In contrast, a solid state choke’s esign is entirely different. It still has a coil inside but is one solid, massive body where the coil is buried in iron, similar toa building where concrete encloses the steel beams. No matter how high the current, solid state chokes won’t vibrate and therefore won’t emit annoying noise. In comparison with traditional chokes, SSC is much more stable and have a higher anti-surge capacity

If some could advice me, it would be great!!

Try physically inspecting the processor for any missing or bent pins.  If you're going to flash the BIOS, make sure to do it with the forum's USB flashing tool.  It has a 100% success rate and everybody that has used it (including myself) swear by it.
