  • 890GXM G65 Phenom II X6 BIOS query

Hi. I didn't get the required information from the sticky regarding thuban support for the above mentioned board, so I've created a new thread. I have a plan of buying AMD Phenom II X6 1055T processor and MSI 890GXM G65 board. The board at the time of release didn't have the support for thubans, so most probably I'd need to get a BIOS update for the installation of the thuban CPU. My question is, Will it boot with the thuban CPU even without the bios update? I'm asking this because I don't have an old AMD CPU to carry out the BIOS update process. If it doesn't boot, the it's a complete waste of money. Thanks in advance...

I was afraid of this combo but my results were fine. I bought the combo at Frys and it came with bios version 1.4 and booted and worked fine through windows, but it would not recognize cpu speed accurately after overclock( had nothing to do with amd cool feauture) After 1.6 bios update its recognized flawlessly. You shouldnt need to have another processor to do a bios update,it should still allow you to boot to bios.
This is guide i followed to flash bios successfully with bootable usb

The 17.4 gives me bsods with same settings as 17.3.
Likely MSI tweaked the auto voltages a bit at least it did for my 2600k your best bet is to start over with your over clock and avoid auto settings where possible especially voltages. Actual required voltages for your specific hardware always trancends bios changes much better
Quote from: lionfire on 14-November-11, 01:32:58
Conditioned, this means that your chip can't stand the voltage you gave it....Have you changed Vdroop to Low?
I have deleted bios, reset, date started from 11/01/2011- date of bios, but on every restart sometimes cpu throttles from 4.5 to 4.2 and sometimes stays with any load applied, to 4.5.
Changed Long, short to 255 and duration to 32000, changed overspeed protection to disabled, nothing....in every reboot, cpu throttles.
Going back to 17.2 bios until Ivy Bridge comes out....
Do you have ESIT, Turbo Boost, EPU2013 & Spread Spectrum disabled. What's your OC below 4.7 no need for PLL overvoltage either. Head over to your board specific thread they will get you worked out of trouble there. Fill out your system specs in this forums User CP first however so we/they know what you are working with.
FYI I wouldn't count on Ivy Bridge being trouble free it all sounds good but it's not that much of an upgrade from Z68 unless you are running SLI/CF. The main disappointment in my book is the max of 2 Sata III 6G native Intel ports. When you consider how much these new x79 boards will cost and how they are rushing it to market with out fixing the Sata issues it adds up to being short changed and Z68 will be more mature more stable etc etc for the near term. In the end it will take a next gen socket 2011 chipset, call it X80, like GF790 was to GF780, to fix it all which will be worth the upgrade IMHO.

  • 890gxm-g65 and AM3+ support

My computer has a gigabyte board and am getting ready to upgrade my CPU from the FX-4100 to the 6300 piledriver...
My nephew lives with me and is an amateur computer ethusiast ...  I myself have never done anything with bios updates and such but here is my question
His board is the MSI 890gxm-g65, it normally supports the am3 socket CPUs..  but looking at MSI's website.. it says with a bios update it can support AM3+ CPUs.. according to Everest Ultimate..  his current bios version is 1.6..  I am wondering if that bios will support the FX-4100 or if i need to get him an updated bios version and need to better understand how to update or "flash" the bios..  any help would be appreciated..  thank you in advance
also i know this is an old question..  the AM3+ support for these boards came out a couple years ago..  I am just new to bios updating and flashing..  and not sure how to proceed..  I know that this particular board will support the AM3+ socket CPUs..  but i am not sure his boards BIOS is the right version or not

That MB requires at least BIOS 1.C for FX-4100.

Use the forum flash tool to flash the BIOS, see here how to do it:

You increased the DRAM to 1,8V ????
Can you post your CPU-Z SPD Tab please.
Sorry for my english,  but it isn't my natural language! I mean that I set the DRAM voltage to 1.8V, because normal voltage of DDR3 is 1.5V.

  • 890GXM-G65 keyboard issues

Before I go over specs, I am having the EXACT same problem described in this thread.  The OP in that thread is correct in that the bios does NOT stop at the F1/F2 prompt after a CMOS clear -- it pauses for about 1 second then continues on its way.  Subsequent reboots simply end up on a failed boot page.
My config: 890GXM-G65 main board with bios revision 1.8, AMD Phenom II X6 1090T cpu, 16G ram (posts), 675W power supply (Thermaltake).
All peripherals are disconnected from the system.  I cannot get a PS/2 keyboard to work nor a USB keyboard in any port.  I have run into this in the past on certain servers with legacy keyboard support and one could get around the problem by plugging in BOTH a usb and ps/2 keyboard but that is not working in this case.
A PS/2 keyboard will light all three (caps/num/scroll) on power on but keyboard does not work and once post is complete all three are off and non-toggleable.  A USB keyboard lights up num-lock on power up or hot-plug and it stays lit.  No input works from this keyboard either.  I have no OS installed and no bootable media connected so I continually end up at the no boot media screen which says to press a key.  On this screen I cannot press a key or ctl-alt-del with any results.
Since the original thread I referenced above was never "completed" with a fix I'm hoping we can document it here (and I can have a working system)

Well, that didn't take long to figure out, my next troubleshooting step got it.
Apparently to have the keyboard active during post (to get into bios) you have to have ONE bootable device connected to the system.  I hooked up the DVD drive and the keyboard became functional.  Disconnecting the DVD returns the keyboard to the previously non-functional state on reboots/power ups.

  • 890GXM-G65 New Build

    Hello
I am building a new machine but having blue screen crashes during OS installation. The machine spec is as follows:
Motherboard: MSI 890GXM-G65, with latest 1B BIOS. BOIS is set to default settings.
    Memory: 2 x 4GB Corsair 1333 DDR3 Non-ECC (9-9-9-24) 1.50V, dual channel.
    Power Supply: Arctic 700W.
Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Socket AM3 3.2 GHz.
    HDD: Seagate 500GB 3.5" Barracuda SATA-III 6Gb/s
    Optical Drive: LG BH10LS30 10x BD-RE with DVD±RW & LightScribe SATA Blu-Ray
First I tried loading my old Windows XP OS but this was was crashing at random points in the installation process. Sometimes I would get all the way through but it would crash during updating from the Windows Update website. I gave this up and decided to bit the bullet and put Windows 7 on it. This began blue screening almost immediately, but my most successful attempt has got to 66% in the expanding files phase of the install (several times it has stopped here). I had a 550W PSU installed at this time, so I decided to put the PSU shown above in, but this has made no difference. The blue screen message is almost always "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL", which does not tell me to much. It might be indicating a CPU or Motheboard issue, but I cannot decide which.
I now have a pretty big investment in hardware and software, and not a lot to show for it. I would be most grateful for any pointers that anyone has to offer on how to proceed further with determining where the problem lies. Thanks very much for reading this.

The Corsair is for sure far more powerful then both others.
As you have to look at the 12V rail, it output 34A BUT that is continues power.
Those other PSU's will not do that, not even close.
You can simply not buy a powersupply that outputs 500W continues for a lower price then the Corsair.
But the entire game isn't about watts, it's about 12V amperes that can be delivered continues, the Corsair does that.
Those "brands" you name for sure won't deliver anything near and probably explode when you try.
Please do some reading at http://www.jonnyguru.com/ you will quickly find out that watts are not the game to be played, the amps that the 12V regulators can handle are.
BTW, he has some reviews about el-cheapo PSU's that blow to pieces big time not even reaching anything near the Wattage on the label.
Please don't fall for the Watt trap as it's abused by many cheap crap PSU's, even if they do look fancy.
Just read this test about the CX-430 and you know enough: http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=214
