8GB memory . Should use 64bit mode?

Hello all
2010 MBP 13" 8GB memory
question: With 8GB memory, should I be booting into 64-bit mode for Snow Leopard?
I am a heavy user of VMware Fusion so I'm not sure how Snow Leopard in 32-bit mode handles memory especially with 8GB.

Hi Muhammad,
There's any number of cases for using character mode Reports. However, they all typically come down to what your doing with the output of the report.
Basically, you need character mode reports whenever the Report output needs to be read by some sort of Ascii file reader. This could be notepad, VI, MSVC, dot matrix or fixed character set printers, ...
A less common case is where you just want to get at the data within the report. You're just using the ascii output as a data dump to pass through to another program/utility. (This is really just a specialised case of the previous one).
There are some cases where character mode output may be one of several choices. Eg: the body of an email message which could be HTML or plain text.

I have a N95 8GB and when I try to connect it to my PC I get the error message that the mass memory is in use by another application.
I have stopped all running applications. (there where none)
Done a factory soft reset.
No difference. Still cant conect the phone in Data transfer mode.
Any suggestions of a help ful nature woild be nice.

I would take a look at the internal drives offered by both Crucial (click the link "Internal Hard Drives Now Available") and OWC. I would stay away from Western Digital drives as they seem to have problems on a number of Mac models.
You can also shop for RAM at Crucial and OWC - just select the System Scanner tab at the Crucial website to find out which memory is right for your machine.

If I had a application disk, I would unistall and reinstall FCPX. I am assuming there is a way do do this without a disk - just have not been able to easliy find out how.

Well it did NOT work. Here is a screen capture as FCPX loads showing the drive while it loads. Then when it is loaded, NO drive showing up in the Event Library ( I have turned off the external drive).

I heard rumours that Mountain Lion creates the problem. With Lion I had no problem. Logic Pro runs without issues. So what can I do now? Try delete the mainstage preferences
from USER/library/preferences com.apple.mainstage.plist
even if you are running mainstage 2.1.3 and not 2.2.2 it should work with mountain lion

We have Oracle version 10.2.0.1.0
We have a problem with a procedure.
In our scenario we make use of VARRAY in the procedure to pass some filter parameters to a select distinct querying a view made on three tables.
Unfotunately not always execution it is successful.
Sometimes it returns wrong value (0 for the count parameter), sometimes (rarely) the server stops working.
We suspect that this is caused by a bug fixed in versione 10.2.0.3.0
Bug:4705928 PLSQL: Memory leak using small varrays when trimming the whole collection and inserting into it in a loop
We suspect this becasue we made two procedure the first (spProductCount) uses a function (fnProductFilter) to calculate the values of a varray and passes them into the select,
while in the second procedure (spProductCount2) parameters are passed directly into the statement without varray
and there are failures only in the first procedure.
On the other hand on another server 10.2.0.1.0 we never have this problem.
The instance manifesting the bug runs under shared mode, while the other is under dedicated mode.
Turning the first one to dedicated mode makes the bugs disapear.
Unfortunately this is not a solution.
In the sample there are the three table with all constraints, the view, tha varray custom type, the function and the two procedures.
Is there someone that may examine our sample and tell us if the pl/sql code corresponds to the bug desciption.
We also want to know if it's possibile that the same server running under different mode (SHARED/DEDICATED) doesn't behave the same way.

Possible deadlocks with in-memory database using Java

I've written a completely in-memory database using the Java API on BDB 4.6 and 4.7 for Windows and Linux (x86). The completely in-memory database means the database content and logs are entirely in-memory and the overflow pages will not be written to a disk file.
The database environment and the database are configured to be transactional. All database access methods are specified to be auto-commit by setting the transaction argument to null. The environment is configured to be multi-threaded (which is the default when using the Java API).
When run with a single-threaded client, the application works correctly on both Windows and Linux for BDB 4.6 and 4.7.
When run with a multi-thread client that uses two thread for the database access, I run into a deadlock inside the call to the Database.delete method about half the time.
I am assuming that in the "auto-commit" mode, a deadlock should not be possible.
Any reported problems with using Java with in-memory database?

Hi Hisur,
If you are using transactions and multiple threads, you will have to deal with deadlock. In this particular case, it's likely that a delete is causing two btree pages to be merged (called a "reverse split"). Auto-commit makes no difference in this case -- the application must retry the operation.

You don't say whether this is 32bit or 64bit Windows. If it's the former, the following information may be helpful.
"Windows manages virtual memory differently than all other OSes. The way Windows sets up memory for DLLs guarantees that the virtual address space of each process is badly fragmented. Other OSes avoid this by densely packing shared libraries.
A TimesTen database is represented as a single contiguous shared segment. So for an application to connect to a database of size n, there must be n bytes of unused contiguous virtual memory in the application's process. Because of the way Windows manages DLLs this is sometimes challenging. You can easily get into a situation where simple applications that use few DLLs (such as ttIsql) can access a database fine, but complicated apps that use many DLLs can not.
As a practical matter this means that TimesTen direct-mode in Windows 32-bit is challenging to use for those with complex applications. For large C/C++ applications one can usually "rebase" DLLs to reduce fragmentation. But for Java based applications this is more challenging.
You can use tools like the free "Process Explorer" to see the used address ranges in your process.
Naturally, 64-bit Windows basically resolves these issues by providing a dramatically larger set of addresses."

I have to use Safe Mode to make changes to Options since updating to 4.0.1

Since installing 4.0.1 from 3.7.16 I have noticed all the Options check marks are missing and the only way it seems to change the settings in Options is to use Safe Mode where the check marks become visible. The same thing is occurring with the preferences of some of the add-ons as well. I would guess some kind of Config. problem. Some feedback to address this issue would be greatly appreciated. Although version 4 is faster I'm already missing the older version that worked with no major bugs and am seriously considering either installing the older version or changing browsers.

I am indeed using a custom theme. Classic Compact 4.0.8 to be exact but that wasn't the cause of the anomalous behavior. I was also using an add-on for Classic Compact called Classic Compact Options 4.0.8. After disabling this add-on the check-marks did appear where their suppose to. So that is where the bug came from. By the way my OS is: Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit SP1. I also have the the same set up on a Windows XP Professional 32bit SP3 machine and do not encounter the same behavior. So the problem lies with Windows 7 and/or a 64bit operating system. I'm a newbee to this forum. Is there a way to notify the developer of this add-on about this bug? He really should be made aware of it.

How much Memory should be allocated to SQL Server 2005

SQL server is allocated 57GB of the available RAM.
Could you please tell me what would be the ideal RAM allocation for my scenario. is the one that is set now, fine.
How much RAM should be left for the OS and other processes to run?
I have around 8 databases on the server and the cumulative size of all the databases in about 800GB, these are highly used servers, used for a public domain.

Article provided by Uri will give you not absolute value but almost correct value, but since you asked absolute value you need to look at performance counter to reach at correct memory utilization. If you refer to section 'Does my SQL server has low memory'
in article which Saeid gave you will find list of counters to monitor for memory utilization use the counters to reah absolute value.

IMO its not possible I have never seen SQL server being cause for OS shutdown. SQL Server works in non preemptive mode and will yield memory to OS when required. One possibility is when SQL server has locked pages in memory(LPIM) and some rouge process
or driver starts using memory from OS heavily and since SQL server memory is locked( due to LPIM privilege) it cannot trim heavily resulting in OS to terminate but this is not because of SQL server but because of bad drivers and processes leaking
memory on OS.

Do I need to boot into 64bit mode to take advantage of 64bit apps?

The DAW I use just announced 64bit support. My machine is an early 8-core that will not boot into 64bit mode. Is this even necessary though? Will I still be able to access RAM beyond the 4gb cap while booted into 32bit mode?

Your Mac will revert to the default kernel the next time you reboot it.

Early 2008 implemented Unified EFI which is 64-bit but you need to run 10.6.x and even then... so much for "64-bit" hardware and OS talk we heard for years.

Even if you cannot or do not boot the Mac OS X Snow Leopard kernel into 64-bit mode, you can run your 64-bit apps as 64-bit, and they can take advantage of all the memory in the machine. This was/is possible even with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. The main problem being that there are only a handful of 64-bit applications available as of September 2009.

[AthlonFX] K8T Master & Fx51 - 128bit vs 64bit Mode

Hey guys I posted here ages ago when i first got my fx51 and mobo combo and had some issues, while most of them I got sorted one of them has plagued me for over a year and is really pooting me...
Basically i get random bsod all the time, i might go a day or 2 without one, or get 3 at once, and i also get a lot of random crashes in games and programs, and me being a programmer i get this quite a bit which makes things difficult .
Now when i first got my board i tried to run it with chip kill ecc but that would cause windows to not load and was advised (from here) to not use it . From the get go i have had 2 registered 512mb ddr400 kingston ram chips which i always thought were a bit dodgy and the cause of my problems however after today i found its not them at all.
I downloaded memtest and ms' mem diag tool and both concluded i have memory errors but couldnt isolate which dimm, so i played around and found whenever i have my dimms setup for 128bit mode (slot 1&2 or 3&4) i get a stack of errors, however testing each stick individually and in slots 1&3 together i run fine, i run so fine that i can load windows with ecc on and have not had 1 error at all .
My question would be, does anyone else suffer from this, ever heard of this or know how to fix it, this is actually my 2nd board from msi due to the first one having a defective southbridge so i dont think its the slots (2&4) but rather something with the way the 128bit mode operates. The worst thing about this is that i bought this machine when the fx first came out to be my ultimate gaming machine, and now one of the main reasons its so fast, i cannot use so its kinda bugging me, do i go for performance over stability? i guess if you play WoW you would know how bad it is crashing and having to relog in only to be met by a 5hr queue.
Anyone got any ideas or similar war stories, please share .

and I dont need it to run stable, what I was saying, was that when i had the ram setup for 128bit dual chan, if i had chip-kill on the OS would never load and i had to run with it off, now when i run in 64bit mode it runs totally fine.
Im using the exact same ram which individual both test fine using both memtest+ and ms' diag tool on this machine and my other one, originally i thought it was my ram which was faulty but its looking like its either the slots in the board, or the board's software, either way i havnt had a random crash yet, no bsod, no game drop outs, no windows rebooting for no reason.

Why is CS6 slow, 64bit-mode or not?

Got the CS6 trial for OSX. Its not nearly as responsive as promised.
It can't handle average files with let say 30states in it.
Escpecially if you create symbols with a lot of elements(30+) which are nested and you want to edit those symbols, there is huge perfomance drop:
You can't use your keyboard for moving elements within those symbols. The programs give you no feedback what it is doing.
Then I checked the activity monitor: Apparently fireworks is not running in 64bit mode.
Is this just the trial version or is the Adobe-Add misleading that it should be running in 64bit?
My comp-specs:
lates iMac
20GB Ram
SSD

And why it has not been improved? Its so obvious slow!

Performance improvement in CS6 is made interms of refreshing the Property inspector on Mac platform.
On Windows platform file open /edit and save limit has been increased for 64 bit machines.
Adobe Fireworks CS6 is a 32-bit application only.Also performance interms of rendering on canvas or preview is not changed in CS6.
